THIS WEEKS MONSTER PICKIN'S!!! :
ELLIOTT SHARP - Racing Hearts/Tessalation Row/Calling (HR.Musik.De
0018) 'Racing Hearts' (1998) and 'Calling' (2001) are both performed
by the Radio-Sinfonie Orchestre of Frankfurt, while 'Tessalation Row'
(1986, revised 1996) is performed by a string quintet from members of
Ensemble Modern. "Racing Hearts" is a marvelous work in which
focused orchestral fragments balance between spacious and dense
areas. "Tessalation Row" is an intense and frenzied work that evokes
the restless spirit of many of Elliott's early pieces. "Calling" is
certainly one of Elliott's richest and most varied works. It begins
with some ominous, churning strings and evolves through some stark,
suspenseful areas and moves through a variety of kaleidoscopic waves.
While I occasionally find some of Elliott's music too exhausting,
this piece works wonders, the (invisible) thread which holds it
together is not hard to follow, it makes perfect sense. This cd
includes a most informative 38 page booklet.

MARC DUCRET - Qui parle? (Sketch 333038) Featuring Mr. Ducret on
various guitars, Julien Lourau & Christophe Monniot on saxes; Yves
Roberts, Thierry Madiot, Alain Vankenhove & Michel Massot on horns;
Benoit Delbecq & Allie Delfau on keyboards; Bruno Chevillon & Helene
Labarriere on basses and Eric Echampard & Francois Verly on drums &
percussion, plus four vocalists. Our fave French
jazz/rock/avant/prog guitar hero and longtime Tim Berne collaborator,
returns with his first effort as a leader in quite a few years and
produces one of the strangest and most unique blends of multi-genre
oddities. I can hear moments of Zappa-like humor with lots of
unexpected twists and turns. Marc's guitar is the central figure and
main soloist here, yet solos are often kept short so the tale can
continue. This is quite a long (75 minutes) and varied journey-like
suite, completely connected as the scenery changes and the story
evolves. Wonderful and weird!

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH - broomriding (PSI 03.05) Featuring Alex
on piano with Rudi Mahall on bass clarinet, Tristan Honsinger on
cello and Paul Lovens on percussion. Recorded on Radio Berlin in
September of 2002. Recordings from master pianist Alex Von
Schlippenbach are a rarity, so when this one arrived, it was an
unexpected delight. The other great surprise was getting an
opportunity to see/hear Alex live both at Tonic (with Evan Parker &
Paul Lytton) earlier this year and at Victo a month later with that
same trio plus Peter Brotzmann, William Parker & Hamid Drake! He
hadn't been in the US in more than a decade and the trio with E.
Parker & Lytton actually toured the US, leaving many astonished
listeners on boths coasts. It begins rather cautiously, slowly
building, ascending with the quartet weaving their waves as things
begin to erupt. Eric Dolphy's "Straight Up and Down" is playfully
deconstructed and turned inside out. There are times when Alex
sounds as if he off on the side playing odd little ditties while the
clarinet, cello and drums swirl naturally and then they all flutter
intensely together. Tristan's strange vocals add some silly spice at
certain times. Pretty cool overall, but after hearing what Alex can
really do, we expect a bit more fireworks from a line-up such as this.

SUSIE IBARRA & MARK DRESSER - Tone Time (Wobbly Rail 014) An
incredible improvised duo from two of downtown's finest and busiest
musicians. Both can often be heard live at Tonic with their own
great bands, as well as in Zorn game pieces and improv nights and
have excellent releases out on Tzadik. Susie plays drums and exotic
percussion in her own unique style and Mark plays extraordinary
contrabass unlike anyone else. Longer review upcoming when we get
copies in our grubby little hands, but no doubt amazing!
CD release for $14.
DENMAN MARONEY - Fluxations (New World 80607) Featuring Ned
Rothenberg on bass clarinet & alto saxophone, Dave Ballou on trumpet,
Denman Maroney on hyperpiano, Mark Dresser on contrabass and Kevin
Norton on drums & vibraphone. Denman is known for his unique
"hyperpiano" style, which involves playing the keys with one hand and
the strings with the other using copper bars, brass bowls and other
objects. Maroney is a rare example of a composer/improviser who has
made "pulse fields" an ongoing platform for both his writing and
improvising. An approach to time used by such American
experimentalist icons as Charles Ives and Conlon Nancarrow, pulse
fields are rhythmic relationships expressed as ratios such as 3:4:5.
Though they are polyrhythmic, they should not be considered to be
synonymous with polyrhythms. A pulse field can present a rhythmic
ambiguity that is beguiling to the listener, but is vexing to the
performer, which partially explains why pulse fields have remained
more a tool for through-composition than for works that privilege
improvisation.
'Fluxations' is the first instance in which Maroney has
utilized them in an album-length work, which gives some idea of the
difficulty the use of pulse fields presents if the material is
realized by musicians with less than impeccable ensemble and
improvisational skills. For this daunting proposition, Maroney
turned to some of his closest associates, Dresser being foremost
among them, given their fifteen-year association in various co-op
settings. While the resumes of Rothenberg, Kevin Norton and Dave
Ballou are not as entwined with Maroney's, they nevertheless
exemplify the rigor 'Fluxations' requires. Within this intricate
compositional framework, Maroney and his cohorts create a
challenging, enormously engaging work of wonderful rhythmic variety
and delicate shadings that blends composition and virtuosic
improvisation in fresh, unpredictable ways. - New World press info.

TONY MALABY TRIO - Adobe (Free Lance 0305) Featuring Tony on tenor &
soprano saxes, Drew Gress on acoustic bass and Paul Motian on drums.
Superb studio date from one of our favorite local tenor titans, who
just keeps getting better and busier. Tony penned about half of
these fine tunes, with one by his wife, Angelica Sanchez, plus
Ornette's "Humpty Dumpty", the standard "What is This Thing Called
Love" and Latin song called "Dorotea La Cautiva". This is Tony's
second great release of the year as a leader, besides that great
quartet with Louie Belogenis on Avant. Well recorded and a most
thoughtful and well-connected trio. Dedicated to our old friend
Irving Stone.
French import CD for $15.
LOREN CONNORS & ALAN LICHT - in France (FBWL 206) Recorded live at
Les Instants Chavires in January of 2002 in Paris, France. Mastered
by Jim O'Rourke and including a video track. This dynamic, yet
ultra-subtle electric guitar duo played their first ever set at the
old DMG location a decade ago and their last set at the DMG Benefit
Guitar Marathon at Tonic in January. They've only recorded a couple
of other duo efforts in the interim, so that makes this one a rare
and special offering. Extremely haunting, infinitely sad yet somehow
beautiful in its own dreamy way.
We just got a dozen of these CD gems for a mere 10 spot or $10
PETER BROTZMANN/SHOJI HANO - Funny Rat CD (IMJ 512) Free jazz drummer
Shoji Hano and German saxophone giant Peter Brotzmann first met in
Japan in the early eighties. In 1990 Hano went to Europe for the
first time and played with Brotzmann; then he invited Brotzmann to
Japan for a duo tour in fall '91. This album is the complete
recording of a concert they gave during that tour, at Aku Aku in
Tsukuba. In '92 Hano released (on his label EGG) a cassette tape of
that performance, with the same title, omitting one of the pieces
played in the concert. The omitted number is restored on this CD
release (track four), making for a total of five pieces. Since that
tour Hano and Brotzmann have continued to play together frequently.
This valuable recording captures the powerful collaboration of that
early period.
Japanese import CD release for $17.
TRISTAN HONSINGER - this, that and the other/sketches of probability
(AIAI/ReR 009) Featuring Sean Bergin on alto sax & flute, Tobias
Delius on tenor sax, Augusto Forti on clarinet, Tristan Honsinger on
cello & voice, Joe Williamson on contrabass, Alan Purves on drums
plus Peggy Larson & Rick Parets on voices. Tristan has played cello
in the ICP Orchestra for a couple of decades and can occasionally be
heard with Cecil Taylor. He and all (most?) of the members of this
ensemble are based in Holland and record for a number of those
different Bimhuis labels. Witnessing Tristan live is always a
fabulous experience, as he is one of the nuttiest and most strangely
charming of all those wackos in the ICP Orchestra. His solo efforts
are also a rarity with just two in print, an old quintet date on FMP
and a more recent solo effort on ICP. This nine piece ensemble is
certainly his most ambitious project yet. There is a hilarious
"Television" suite which moves through different sections with silly,
child-like vocals which describe assorted TV programs or skits.
There also some great written parts, which give the ensemble some
intricate navigating to do. A completely charming endeavor with some
much desired humor to brighten up our day(s).
Italian import CD for $16.
SKIST - Ellipsis (Polarity 521) Skist is a fine duo featuring Haruna
Ito on voice and Samm Bennett on sampler and percussion. Samm is one
of the original downtown musicians who eventually got married and
moved to Japan, where his still lives. He formed Third Person with
the late, great cellist Tom Cora and organized his own unique band
Chunk, both bands had great cds released on the Knit label. Samm was
always a fine drummer, but an even more gifted sampler specialist.
His two cds on the Knit label were often overlooked pop gems. Last
year, Samm was involved in a trio with Ned Rothenberg and Uchihashi
Kazuhisa called RUB, as well as also releasing this nifty duo cd with
his wife Haruna. On 'Ellipsis', Skist continues Samm's skewered pop
sense with charming, hypnotic samples swirling around Haruna's
enchanting, subtly processed voice, with lyrics in English. The only
other cd I can compare this to is another overlooked pop gem by Ms.
Aiko Shimada on Tzadik.
Japanese self-produced CD release for $15.
FREE FALL - Furnace (Wobbly Rail 013) Free Fall is Ken Vandermark on
clarinets, Ingebrigt H'ker Flaten on bass and H'vard Wiik on piano.
Multi-reeds giant, composer, multi-bandleader and MacArthur Grant
recipient, Ken Vandermark, is constantly busy juggling numerous
bands/projects with his fellow Chicago associates, as well as with a
number of Europe's finest players. Although I am unfamiliar with the
pianist here, the bassist is on a few of Ken's previous releases, as
well as being a member of Raoul Bjorkenheim's Scorch Trio and Ken
always picks his collaborators most wisely.
CD release for $14.
MAL WALDRON/MARION BROWN - ÉSongs of Love and Regret (Free Lance
0302) Sublime studio date from November of 1985 from the wonderful
jazz piano giant who recently passed away and the legendary sixties
free-jazz alto sax hero, who has been hospitalized for the past few
years. An excellent bunch of originals plus Monk's "Blue Monk",
McCoy Tyner's "Contemplation" and Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower is a
Lovesome Thing".
French import CD for $15.
CINDY BLACKMAN/SANTI DeBRIANO/DAVE FIUCZYNSKI - "Trio + Two" (Free
Lance 0304) Featuring Dave "The Fuze" on lead guitar, Santi on bass,
Cindy on drums plus Greg Osby on alto sax (3 tracks) and Jerry
Gonzalez on conga. Us guitar fanatics can just never get enough of
our man "The Fuze" and here he works with a phenomenal rhythm team,
powerhouse drummer Cindy Blackman, who once added her volcanic power
to Praxis and the great bassist Santi DeBriano who consistently puts
out great records as a leader. Both Dave and Greg get a chance to
stretch out, lay back and play a number of superb solos. Cindy also
does a fine job of playing some melodic, magical drum solos.
Completely inspired and strong and diverse writing from all three of
these gifted musicians!!
French import CD for $15.
MICHAEL BATES - Outside Sources (Pommerac Records 238 338) Featuring
Michael on acoustic bass, Quinsin Nachoff on tenor sax & clarinet and
Mark Timmermans on drums & percussion. This was recorded in Toronto
exactly one year ago, but I believe that Michael has since moved
here. Sublime, middle-eastern melodies are featured from this fine
trio. Superb, haunting clarinet, with warm hypnotic melodic bass at
the center and those great (Joey Baron-ish) hands-on-drums flowing
underneath. A perfectly balanced and well matched trio, often at the
calm center, yet still simmering underneath and occasionally erupting
in short bursts.
CD release for $14.
KYLE BRUCKMANN - Wrack (Red Toucan 9323) Featuring Kyle on oboe,
English horn & all (but one of the) compositions, Jeb Bishop on
trombone, Jen Clare Paulson on viola, Kurt Johnson on bass and Tim
Daisy on drums. Although this fine Chicago-based double reeds player
is classically trained, he has also worked in an experimental punk
bad called Lozenge, as well as with saxist/composer Scott Rosenberg
in his large ensemble. The rhythm team, we recall from their work
with Ken Vandermark, as well as Vandermark 5 member Jeb Bishop. I am
a fan of double reeds, something we don't get enough of in jazz.
Although Yusel Lateef introduced a variety of exotic reeds to the
jazz world from the fifties onwards, they were still rarely used
until the likes of Lindsey Cooper (Henry Cow, Art Bears) and Karl
Jenkins (Soft Machine) in the mid-seventies that we heard strong
solos from these rare reeds. On 'Wrack' we find the unlikely
frontline of oboe, trombone and viola, as well as Kyle's unique
writing for his fine quintet. He has written some thorny harmonies
here, also some constantly shifting tempos for the ever spirited
rhythm team to buzz and glide through.
CD release for $15.
DAVID ROTHBAUM - contralto clarinet and prepared piano
(self-produced) [3" CD] A rather curious 11 minute ep featuring
mysterious double tracked growling clarinet and bent percussive
inside-the-piano weirdness. Free, yet focused, well done and rather
fascinating.
Limited edition of 200 3" CD-EP for $10.
RHYS CHATHAM - Echo Solo (Azoth Schallplatten 001) A vinyl-only
release, which is beautifully packaged with extensive notes by the
composer, in a limited edition of 800 copies. By 1989, downtown
legend Rhys Chatham had been fusing art music and punk rock for
almost fourteen years and wanted to try his hand at something else.
Accordingly, he set out to combine forms using a diverse vocabulary
drawn exclusively from the classic avant-garde; the result is 'Echo
Solo'. In it, Chatham appropriates a number of musical styles -
serial technique, chance operations, and just intonation, then
through a process of amalgamation and superimposition, he transcends
their original musical meaning while at the same time imploding it.
Only the tiniest pair of critical scissors could isolate the
individual elements from the final product; it's a fascinating,
paradoxical composition, which the composer happily describes as "a
rite of decimation."
As Chatham himself writes, "When one tunes a piano in just
intonation, it is essentially in one key, the key of 1. La Monte
Young tuned his piano in E-flat, owing to the fact that he was
originally an alto saxophone player. I used a similar technique, but
used C natural as my starting point, for the sake of simplicity. When
we tune a piano in this way, however, we are usually very careful to
select a strategy of striking a particular set of piano keys in order
to stay in the right musical key. In 'Echo Solo', no such strategy
existed. The aleatory and serial techniques used to arrive at the
pitch choices completely ignored the tuning of the piano. And it is
in this sense that 'Echo Solo' would seem to be a contradiction in
terms with respect to the manner in which the piano was tuned. And
indeed it is, but it has the happy effect of endowing the piece with
a unique sound: it clearly doesn't sound like Young, perhaps a bit
more like a strange amalgamation of Cage and Boulez, but out of whack
somehow. Something strangely new!?!
LP-only release (not on CD!) for $16.
MAURICIO KAGEL - Transicion II/Phonophonie (Mode 127) Features
'Transicion II' for piano, percussion & two magnetic tapes (1958-9)
and 'Phonophonie' for four melodramas for two voices & other sound
sources (1963-64). 'Transicion II' was an early exploration of what
'live electronics' are now being used to achieve. The score is in
individual pages which can be placed in any order by the performers.
Repetition of any of the musical material is not allowed - instead,
as the players continue to perform in the present, the tapes can
recall music already played. In addition, the tapes can be
manipulated to change timbre and frequencies in order to make
recognition of the original sounds impossible. For this recording,
the modern technology of live electronics is used in place of the
analogue tape loops. " 'Phonophonie' is intended to be the portrait
of an anonymous 19th century singing actor, captured at the moment of
his vocal decline...", to quote Kagel. Conceived as a melodrama, the
singer reacts with the other sounds as well as having to rapidly
switch between four roles: the singer, the mimic, the ventriloquist
and, in addition, the deaf-mute. The dramatic function of this
dissociation is redefined over the course of a lengthy series of
schizophrenic dialogues and 'trialogues' between the persona of the
singer and his disconnected parts. - Mode press release.
CD release for $15.
ESTRADASPHERE - Quadropus (Mimicry 013) Every band contracts the
departure album syndrome at some point in their career. With
Estradsphere, one has to ask what "departure" could mean for a group
who never bothered to establish much of anything about themselves,
other than capable and graceful navigation of any musical landscape
and the daily performance of feats unimaginable to most musicians.
On 'Quadropus', the band navigates terrain usually reserved for
people who take themselves quite seriously. Who's kidding whom?
These guys could eat most of the downtown pros for breakfast. - FE
borrowed press info. Both Emperor Mike and myself felt that the two
previous releases from this band were pretty f**king amazing and
filled with tons of multi-stylistic surprises.
CD release for $14.
IMPROVISED MUSIC FROM JAPAN - Extra 2003 [Book & 2 CDs] (IMJ 302/3)
In bilingual English-Japanese & 128 pages in total. This is a
special issue supplementing the well-received Improvised Music From
Japan 2002-2003 (IMJ-301), the launch issue of an annual magazine
(published last December). While the annual magazine provides an
overview of the year's trends, each Extra will include an expansive
special feature on a particular theme. The special feature of IMJ
Extra 2003 is 'Improv's New Waves,' a close look at Japan's young
improvisers (with an emphasis on electronics musicians). It contains
a comprehensive essay by music critic Yoshio Otani, and interviews of
artists like Taku Unami, com-yas and Tetsuro Yasunaga, BusRatch,
Takefumi Naoshima, Kazumi Namba, asuna, and nentegaine, as well as
articles on labels associated with these artists--Hibari Music,
commune-disc, cubic music, and Flyrec.
In addition to the special
feature, Extra includes interviews of Ami Yoshida, Shoji Hano, and
Katsura Yamauchi; a conversation between Tetuzi Akiyama and Toshimaru
Nakamura; and a wealth of cd reviews. The two accompanying CDs
contain 17 tracks by musicians presented in the special feature
(asuna, Masafumi Ezaki, Takefumi Naoshima, Kazuhiro Kinoshita, Ju
Muraoka, Masahide Tokunaga, DJ Peaky, DILL, Taku Unami, Taku Hannoda,
nentegaine, aen, Yoichiro Shin, Kazumi Namba, Takumi Toki, Teruyuki
Ohshima, and BusRatch), plus two bonus tracks--a sax solo by Katsura
Yamauchi, and a duo by Shoji Hano and Masaharu Shoji (19 tracks)
Japanese book & 2 CD set release for $20.
MOUTHUS - self/titled (Psych-o-Path 6) Our favorite local
noise/rock/? label is run by two Russian cats who work at Kim's
Underground. Where they find all this local (?) mutant noise/rock
stuff is anybody's guess, but they do deliver the goods. Mouthus
features primitive pounding drums, ominous buried vocal sounds and
ugly, distorto guitar(s). Jeez, this is some scary stuff, way over
the top and often distorted beyond recognition. Must admit that
there is something rather intriguing about this primal weirdness.
What's wrong with me?
CD only release for $10.
EVE PACKER & NOAH HOWARD - cruisin' w/ moxie (Altsax 90023) Featuring
the voice and words of Ms. Packer, the alto sax & music of Noah
Howard and the piano of Bobby Few. Fourth mainly duo offering from
that cantankerous local wordsmith Eve Packer with the legendary
sixties free-jazz sax great Noah Howard and the equally amazing
modern jazz pianist Bobby Few, who worked with Steve Lacy for many
years.
CD release for $10.
LITTLE ANNIE & THE LEGALLY JAMMIN'- self/titled (Italic 035) Little
Annie and her new crew play a wild, hormone-saturated mixture of
spoken song and sometimes harsh, but always swinging rhythms. 'No
Wave' based on electronic beats recordings from the epicentres of pop
music: New York, Mexico City and DŸsseldorf. The very first weirdly
choked echo gives you an idea of what kind of sound system The
Legally Jammin' is, sometimes playing Disco Dub, sometimes No Wave
Funk. Little Annie adds her words to the beat, bass and fat
soul-electric harmony of The Legally Jammin'. When her voice picks
up on a melody and she begins to sing, she is closer to the
lasciviousness of Grace Jones and the emotion of Marianne Faithful
than the solitude of Wanda Robinson. New York had just sit down
beside Little Annie in the sun-drenched heat and she will begin to
tell you a wicked story. She has never been to the cinema, didn't
pick it up from books, these are not stories she has stolen.
Annie
Anxiety is more adventurous. She travels through the visible world,
acts the Bohemian chanteuse, sees, hears and is always right at the
center of events, collects experiences from the street and writes her
book every night. And she performs it on stage. Broadway is the
hardest way: inside and outside. Her texts tell first of redemption
and then of sin. 'Backtrack Jack', for instance, the Pepsi Cola song,
and therefore a loose homage to Leigh Bowery's 'Useless Man' but much
less dirty or "2nd Avenue Blues" which tells of peeling oneself.
Does an onion float without its seven skins? And 'Bleach' is my
favourite clichŽ. It all sounds incredibly sexy even when it is at
its most morbid. Blessed by a late birth, one can innocently say: New
York poetry meets dub electro-clash. And why not: That is how it
should sound, the lovers' rock album of the year. - stolen FE press
blurb.
CD release for $16.
HISTORIC RECORDINGS, REISSUES, RESTOCKS & DVDs for early NOV.:
LOVE - The Forever Changes Concert (Snapper 021) [DVD] An incredible
concert from Royal Festival Hall in London, recorded in January of
this year. Gotta admit that I am a LOVE fanatic! Arthur Lee's Love
were one of the greatest of all sixties psych bands, with five
amazing records released between 1966 and 1970. Their third album,
"Forever Changes" was their crowning jewel and was/is one of the most
seminal of all sixties rock classics. Love's personnel and sound
changed on each record and by the end, Arthur Lee was the only
original member. Their final effort, "False Start" was spotty, as
were any further efforts from Arthur or different versions of later
Love bands.
Arthur seemed to have disappeared in the eighties with
many rumors of drug and mental problems. During the early nineties,
a Love tribute release appeared and then a concert at the old Knit
featuring a few of the bands involved. Lo and behold, Arthur Lee
reappeared and sat in with one of the bands and then put together a
new backing band and played a series of gigs in the NY area. The
gigs as well as Arthur's behavior was erratic, yet there were moments
when the brilliance of his great old sings shone through. His crazed
behavior eventually landed him unjustly in jail in LA for some six
years. Since his release last year, he fronts a new version of Love,
which is incredible strong, their gigs have been amazing. This great
DVD features the entire 'Forever Changes' album performed live with a
small orchestra (strings & horns) and the new Love band, who are
absolutely riveting! There are also five other bonus tracks, an
interview with Arthur Lee and other documentary footage. Flawlessly
put together, a true treasure!
DVD only release in 5.1 Dolby Surround Stereo Sound for $18

guitar heroes - John Renbourn and Bert Jansch plus the exquisite

seventies bands. 41 minutes of pure bliss.

ANTHONY BRAXTON - Solo [NYC] 2002 (Parallactic 53){2 CD set} Two
complete sets of solo alto sax live the NY Society for Ethical
Culture's AACM series on May 24th of 2002. This historic gig was
recorded during last year's Vision Festival, but was not a part of
that fest. It was one of last year's most memorable concerts, since
visionary composer and pioneering alto sax legend Anthony Braxton
played with unlimited resourcefulness for two long sets. Mr. Braxton
plays three standards - Miles' "Tune-Up", Ornette's "Peace" and
Coleman Hawkins' ancient chestnut "Body & Soul" and all are done with
essence of taste. This was Mr. Braxton's first concert in many years
and all who attended were blessed with his gracious spirit and
distinguished performance. Parallactic label head Brandon Evans will
soon disappear & has left us with his last box of these treasures, so
this is your last chance...
LTD REISSUE [50 COPIES] MADE ESPECIALLY FOR DMG
2 CD set release for $28.
SONNY SIMMONS - Solo/Out into the Andromeda (Parallactic 2003)
Legendary west coast avant-jazz alto sax giant, Sonny Simmons,
recorded his first album with Prince Lasha in November of 1962 for
Contemporary, moved NY and recorded with Eric Dolphy and Elvin Jones,
then recorded two incredible records for ESP with his then wife and
great trumpeter Barbara Donald. He moved his family back to the west
coast in the seventies and ended up on the streets homeless and
nearly invisible. Sonny made his comeback in 1994 and has since
recorded some dozen plus releases for various labels, each one a gem
of his invincible, burning spirit. 'Out into the Andromeda' is
Sonny's first ever solo sax offering and it is another inspired
treasure. Three long tracks and over an hour in length, this is
still a magnificent offering that shows Sonny's creative juice
continues to flow from this mountain/source.
On the first piece,
Sonny's tone is as pure and strong as ever and he takes his time to
build through the flow of ideas, cascading flurries, ascending and
descending, occasionally holding onto one note and bending or
stretching it, like a voice reaching for our hearts and souls. The
calm pace of this piece and the mature reflective tone show that
Sonny isn't bound to that free-jazz baggage of only screaming and
considering this is a solo sax effort, it is not hard to dig the
inner flame and beauty within. Each piece builds as Sonny's spirit
spins and brings us closer to heavens. This excellent gift from the
gods was produced righteously by Brandon Evans and he has done a
gracious job, the sound is just right. Brandon just dropped off his
final box of these limited cds, as his label goes into limbo. This 2
CD version includes a second superb solo alto sax set live from San
Francisco in '93 [its not labeled, so remember to mark it down!] and
this will be your final opportunity to get it.
LIMITED EDITION [LESS THAN 20 COPIES]
2 CD version for $25.
STEVE LACY - Plays Monk (Get Back 2023/BYG) [LP version] Recorded on
September 23, 1969 and originally released on BYG/Actuel as
'Epistrophy', this classic Steve Lacy album features Jean Francois
Jenny-Clark (bass), Aldo Romano (drums) and Michel Graillier (piano).
This was Mr. Lacy's first recording in Paris (his newly adopted
city). Here Lacy, a longtime Monk disciple, takes listeners on a
journey through some of Monk's most complex compositions, leaving his

DIAMANDA GALAS - The Litanies of Satan (Mute 001/UK) Mid-line reissue
of her radical debut. Diamanda Galas' first regular album,
originally issued as a 45 rpm 12" on Y Records in 1982 and
subsequently reissued on Mute in 1988. 'The Litanies of Satan'
consists of two pieces, the title track based on texts of Baudelaire
and "Wild Women with Steak-Knives" listed as being 'for solo scream'.
The latter is actually a series of vignettes with differing vocal
characteristics employed for each section, from piercing banshee
wails to quiet, whispered invective. She employs electronic effects
both to enhance certain qualities of her voice (for example,
extending its sibilance) and to overlay multiple lines, creating an
unearthly choir of demons. Next week we'll see another two classic
Diamanda reissues. FE press info blurb.
CD only reissue for $14.
AMON D††L II - Play Phallus Dei [DVD] (Repertoire 3016) First ever
commercial release of this legendary Amon Duul II movie! DVD/digipak,
aspect ratio 4:3; original mono + Dolby Digital 5.1; US-compatable
NTSC, regionfree. This is a cinematic retrospective, focusing on the
early experimental days of Amon DŸŸl II. The original film, shot in
the summer of 1968 at a Munich studio, features the German rock group
with their legendary line-up. A few months before signing their
first recording contract, the group was filmed performing the title
track from their 1969 debut album. The movie was launched at the
Edinburgh Film Festival. "The film could be entitled 'The Creation
Of Sound'," remarked the program notes. A respected national daily
newspaper enthused: "Éa German rock music movie -- RŸdiger NŸchtern's
one of the Munich rock group Amon DŸŸl, turned out to be the most
successful entry and the only one to earn spontaneous applause and
requests for a repeat performance, in addition to earning the curious
accolade: "It's rough, it's vicious, it's drama".
DVD only release for $22.
EXUMA - Exuma (Repertoire 1006) First legit reissue of this 1970
debut album, [originally on Mercury - pre Kama Sutra!]. Freaked-out music, with
elements of voodoo, Bahamian folkore, African/Caribbean shamanism, in
a cult-ish variation of early Dr. John. Well-timed for rediscovery.
In 1970, decades before 'World Music' became a music biz trade term,
a New York based seven-piece ensemble called Exuma caused an
international stir. The superb debut album of this multi-racial
outfit from the West Indies and the Bahamas, fronted by singer Tony
'The Obeah Man' McKay, is now available for the very first time on
CD. At the time, their magnificently rhythmic sound fell on fertile
grounds, notably in Europe, where Exuma ('the ghost of water and
air') became a cult item. Take a chance on this one and explore 40
minutes of sounds from another hemisphere.
CD only reissue release for $15.
EXUMA - Exuma II (Repertoire 1007) First legit reissue of this 1970
album, their 2nd [originally on Mercury - pre Kama Sutra!]. Only a few months after Exuma's tremendous success
with their eponymous debut album (Exuma), charismatic singer Tony
'The Obeah Man' McKay and his band released their follow-up LP on the
Mercury label. Based once again on intriguing Afro-American and
Indian percussion and tribal chants, the seven-piece New York City
based group landed another great album, that will now be available in
the record stores for the first time on CD. A cool cult recording,
like its predecessor. I caught them in the late eighties at the New
Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest and they still sounded great!
CD only reissue release for $15.
Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, Volume Four [2 LP
set] (Revenant 6002) Harry Smith was a true polymath - avant-garde
filmmaker, alchemist, folklorist, painter, magician, archivist and
expert on string figures, paper airplanes and Ukrainian painted eggs!
He is perhaps best known for his pioneering three-volume 'Anthology
of American Folk Music', originally released in 1952 and reissued to
great acclaim in 1997 by Smithsonian/Folkways. Compiled by Harry
Smith contemporaneously with the first three volumes, 'Volume 4' of
Harry's historic Anthology went unissued for almost 50 years. In
conjunction with The Harry Smith Archives, Revenant presents Smith's
'secret volume' in its intended song sequence, including tracks by
Monroe Brothers, Carter Family, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Lead
Belly, Uncle Dave Macon, and Sleepy John Estes. Featuring the first
in-depth narrative on Smith and his work, with essays by Ed Sanders
(Fugs), John Cohen (New Lost City Ramblers), John Fahey, Dick
Spottswood and Greil Marcus, and previously unpublished photos,
including a teenage Harry Smith engineering some of his earliest
field recordings. Two albums plus a twenty page booklet housed in a
deluxe double gatefold sleeve. Free poster included. Clear vinyl.
Two LP set for $24.
SKID ROW - Skid Row (Columbia 477369) Classic Irish blues/rock/jazz
power trio which featured a 17 year old Gary Moore, before he went to
join Colosseum II and become a guitar legend. What's odd is that
this is not their first domestic album called 'Skid', which was
released here on Epic. It does include half of that great album plus
another six songs possibly from their first UK release, which are
almost as good and a bit more rootsy. Some heavy Cream influence in
the vocal department and a bunch of great guitar solos, as well.
British mid-line CD only reissue for $12.
GERSHON KINGSLEY - First Moog Quartet (Dagored 148) In 1970, Kingsley
formed the pioneering First Moog Quartet, a four-synthesizer ensemble
that attempted to prove that the electronic music could be played
'live' on stage, even in classical musical venues like Carnegie Hall
(where the group gave the first live performance of synthesized music
ever on January 30, 1970). Kingsley said, "people were kind of
confused about the concert, I understand, because it was just so
new." In order to get the Moog Quartet going, Kingsley had to
convince Robert Moog to build three other synthesizers to use. Then
hire and train four musicians to play them. Not an easy task. But
Kingsley's First Moog Quartet (originally released in 1970 on
Audiofidelity) is the astonishing result. Original artwork, with
fold-out digipak and booklet of original liner notes.
Italian import CD release for $16.
