ANTON FIER - dreamspeed/blind light {1992-1994} [2 CD set] (Tzadik
Key Series 7609) Two long out-of-print releases from legendary
downtown drummer and composer Anton Fier. Both discs contain a
previously unreleased bonus track. 'Dreamspeed' features Bootsy
Collins & Buckethead on guitars, Bill Laswell on bass, Phew on
vocals, Matt Stein on loops & samples and Anton on drums, percussion
& samples. 'Blind Light' features Nicky Skopelitis & Knox Chandler
on guitars, Laswell on bass, Ayib Dieng on percussion, Lori Carson,
Lydia Kavanagh & Phew on vocals and Anton drums, percussion, etc.
Our old friend and wunderkind drummer/producer/bandleader Anton Fier
is one of the most creative, diverse and influential musicians to
emerge from this scene for the past two decades, having served time
with the Feelies, Lounge Lizards, Pere Ubu, playing on countless
sessions for/with Bill Laswell & John Zorn and leading the great
Golden Palominos through numerous line-ups. After retiring from
music during the late nineties, he's back this year doing gigs at
Tonic with Zorn, Skopelitis, O'Rourke, Scherr, Lindsay and others.
Many of us fans and friends are only too happy to welcome him back!
'Dreamspeed' was first released on Zorn's first label Avant
in 1992, but soon went out of print due some differences of opinion
about the original cover art. After a half dozen releases from the
Golden Palominos, this was Anton's first date under his own name.
Japanese female vocalist, Phew, is known for her work with members of
Can, as well as a fine solo effort from this period which was
reissued last year. She also can be heard on an Otomo CD from last
year on Tzadik. Laswell's thick, hypnotic electric bass and Anton's
spirited, sometimes slamming, always groovin' drums are at the center
of each piece, keeping those great rhythms going strong. Both
Buckethead and Bootsy play atmospheric, sometimes funky guitars and
there is much well selected samples swirling around in the mix.
Phew's enticing often spoken word voice adds an air of mystery as
well as the enchanting voices of Lori Carson and Lydia Kavanagh, both
of whom sang for the Golden Palominos. Both discs are over 70
minutes long and both bonus tracks [one from each session] are great
additions to these consistently strong releases.
I caught Anton with Locus Solus (Zorn & Arto) last night (12/11/03)
at Tonic and they still sound great two decades after their first
release. We are so glad to have 'Dreamspeed' and 'Blind Light' back
in print and Anton wowing us live once more!
2 CD set for $20.
MARC SLOAN - Tree of Nerve Endings [10 cd box set & large booklet]
(self-produced) An immensely impressive hand-made box set from
electric bassist & composer extraordinaire, Marc Sloan, which is a
retrospective anthology covering solo, duo and group projects from
1985-2000. I met Marc in the mid-eighties when he was playing with
the powerful NY punk/prog/noise band Ritual Tension. His first solo
album, "Yeow" came out in 1985, with him playing keyboards, guitar,
percussion, electronics and tapes, with guest horn players. 'Yoew'
is long out-of-print, but is included here with another rare session
called 'Oxowl' from '89/'91. Marc went on to play el. bass in
Elliott Sharp's Carbon for nearly a decade and eventually organized
his own amazing post/noise/rock band called Gawk which included Joe
Trump (also from Carbon) & Steve Moses on drums, as well as great
players like Gregor Kitzis on violin, Knox Chandler & Andrew Nahem on
guitars, Reed Ghazala & Alexander Smith on devices and Andy Haas on
dijaredo(sic). All four intense Gawk releases are also included
here. After Gawk, Marc has continued to work on numerous solo
projects with different personnel - Jane Scarpantoni on cello, Virgil
Moorefield on drums and Kido Natsuki from Bondage Fruit on guitar.
The final cd is an MP3 which includes all of the music from the
previous nine discs. The box itself looks like a small treasure
chest and fits all ten cds snuggly inside, each cd is color coded to
match the legend in the equally impressive 9" x 11" booklet with
superb large artwork. A great deal of thought and work went into
this...
Handsome self-produced 10 CD HANDMADE BOX set with large booklet in a
LIMITED EDITION OF 16 [Yes, that's right SIXTEEN!], signed & numbered
by Marc Sloan for $100.
IMPORTANT REISSUES from the NOTORIOUS and ELUSIVE
BYG/ACTUEL CATALOGUE:
GRACHAN MONCUR III - New Africa/Aco Dei De Madrugada [One Morning I
Woke Up Very Early] (Actuel 21 & 33/Charly; UK) 'new africa'
features Grachan on trombone, Roscoe Mitchell on alto sax & flute,
Archie Shepp on tenor sax, Dave Burrell on piano, Alan Silva on bass
and Andrew Cyrille on drums, recorded in August of 1969. 'Aco
Dei...[One Morning...]' features Grachan on trombone, Fernando
Martins on piano & vocals, Beb Guerin on bass and Nelson Serra de
Castro on drums, recorded in September & November of 1969. Grachan
Moncur III was one of the giants of free jazz trombone during the
turbulent sixties, recording on more than a dozen essential records
with Jackie McLean, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Archie Shepp.
Grachan recorded two excellent albums for Blue Note, 'Evolution' and
'Some Other Stuff' during this time which were part of a Mosaic
reissue, but both are sadly out-of-print. He traveled to Algiers in
July of 1969 with Archie Shepp and performed/recorded at the first
Pan-African Festival of Culture and then moved to Paris where there
was an explosive scene with a number of AACM and NY expatriates.
This is where Grachan recorded his next two albums as a leader for
the BYG label, both of which are included on this single cd and have
only been available on reissued vinyl in recent times. 'new africa'
is a side-long suite in four parts and has that sublime, soulful Blue
Note-like groove and righteous, laid back solos from all the horns
and Burrell's fine piano. The second side of this album opens with
"space spy" which has a more sizzling, spacey vibe with some
mysterious droning horns. "exploration" swirls quickly with Alan
Silva's superb bass burning underneath the chattering, squealing
horns and intense piano. Both Grachan and Archie take explosive
solos. The second album, 'one morning I woke up very early' is a
much different affair with a quartet which includes two Latin players
with whom I am unfamiliar, as well as French bassist Beb Guerin who
is many BYG sessions. Two of the songs are traditional which
includes the title piece. Still, that superb, soulful Blue Note vibe
is present and the quartet play beautifully, perhaps a bit tamer than
the other session. It is those radiant melodies which ring true
throughout this fine date with luscious solos from Grachan and Nelson.
UK import CD for $16.
ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO - Live In Paris [2 CD set] (Actuel/Charly;
UK) Recorded live on October 5th of 1969, this was the early quartet
version of the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago, just before drummer
Don Moye joined. The Art Ensemble feature Lester Bowie on trumpets &
percussion, Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on various reeds,
whistles and assorted percussion, Malachi Favors on basses and
percussion and special guest Fontella ("Rescue Me") Bass on vocals.
This cosmic offering has only recently been available on reissued
vinyl for about the same price and has long been out-of-print. Each
disc here features one long and winding work, "oh, strange" and "bon
voyage". Each moves through a variety of mysterious terrain, often
free and always inspired. There is an organic flow to the way this
performance unfolds and explosive Sun Ra-like free/jazz insanity.
Fontella's occasional vocals add a certain seasoned spice and warmth
to balance out the more intense and extreme eruptions. Great news to
finally have this long lost Art Ensemble treasure on cd.
2 CD set UK import for $22.
ARCHIE SHEPP - Yasmina A Black Woman/Poem for Malcolm
(Actuel 4 & 11/Charly; UK) Two classic BYG/Actuel releases complete
on 1 CD! 'Yasmina A Black Woman' is another of tenor sax
giant Archie Shepp's fabulous studio dates from August of 1969 in
Paris with an odd cast of characters from both the avant and more
mainstream jazz world playing well together. The collective personnel
features Archie, Roscoe Mitchell, Arthur Jones & Hank Mobley on
saxes, Clifford Thorton on cornet, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Dave
Burrell on piano, Malachi Favors & Earl Freeman on basses and Sunny
Murray, Philly Joe Jones & Art Taylor on drums. The [LP] side-long
title track is especially mind-blowing! 'Poem for Malcolm' is One of
Shepp's most memorable albums for BYG. Side one has him playing with
Burton Greene, Alan Silva, Philly Joe Jones, and Claude Delcloo on
the extended Mamarose/Poem For Malcolm. The track starts out with
very free playing, then moves into a more subdued passage, with
Shepp's recitation of his "Poem For Malcolm". Side two has a great
lineup that includes Grachan Moncour III, Malachi Favors, and Hank
Mobley, who gives one of the wildest performances of his life! The
group runs through the 20 minute track Rain Forest/Oleo, and begins
with a dark, spare performance, then leaps into a reading of "Oleo"
that's filled with fire.
UK import CD for $16.
[please note: those of you who originally received this newsletter via email were told that the above Shepp CD was a 2CD set for $22 - that was our error. All orders received were charged at the lower price shown here.]
DON CHERRY - Orient/Blue Lake [2 CD set] (Actuel/Charly; UK) These
titles were originally released as two 2 LP sets only in Japan on the
BYG label. The contents of all four LPs are found here complete!
'Orient' is an extremely rare, much sought after and marvelous
session featuring two trios: one with the late contrabass legend
Johnny Dyani (Blue Notes, Brotherhood of Breath) and Okay Temiz, the
legendary Turkish percussion master on 'Eagle Eye Part 1 & 2' and
'Togetherness', recorded in Paris on April 22nd; the other trio
features legendary Dutch drummer Han Bennink with Mocqui on tamboura
on 'Orient Part 1 & 2' and 'Si Ta Ra Ma' recorded in Carpentras,
France on August 11th, '71 -- and world traveler, free-spirited
pocket trumpet god and multi-instrumentalist (piano, dousangooni and
vocals) Don Cherry fronting both trios! These are outstanding live
recordings from 1971 & 1972 from France! 'Blue Lake' is an extremely
rare and sought after recordings featuring Don Cherry on trumpets,
piano, dousangooni and vocals with the late contrabass legend Johnny
Dyani (Blue Notes, Brotherhood of Breath) and Okay Temiz, the
legendary Turkish percussion master; and we believe (though you can't
tell from the original Japanese text replicated here) Dollar Brand
[Abdullah Ibrahim] makes it a quartet on "Dollar's Tune"! These are
both amazing live recordings from 1971 and this is now the most
inexpensive way to own both these treats, selling them to you
separately would be over $30!
2 CD set UK import for $22.
DANIEL CARTER/MORGAN CRAFT/ERIC EIGNER - Mysterium (Eavesdrop 001)
Local reeds & trumpet hero, Daniel Carter, needs no introduction as
he is the busiest of all downtown improvisers, playing with just
about everybody at some point, no matter what genre they're dealing
with. Morgan Craft plays stunt guitar with Burnt Sugar, as well as a
duo called Rough Americana with DJ Mutamassik. Eric Eigner plays
extended drumset & clarinet, released this cd, yet I hadn't heard of
him before this. Well recorded and balanced, this is high end improv
that moves quickly through focused, constantly changing dialogue.
Daniel begins with some cautious flute before switching to relaxed
muted trumpet as Morgan spins short connected lines of warped guitar
and sampled (tape?) weirdness. Eric moves effortlessly through
different styles, fractured jazz, funky snippets and free eruptions.
Morgan also dips into the heavy Hendrix bag at times, as well as
inserting a wide variety of mutant guitar soundscapes. He is a
perfect foil for Daniel Carter who also is in constant motion between
horns and styles. There are moments when things quiet down with some
somber, floating tenor sax and delicate guitar & fragile percussion,
which balances the more intense eruptions that never last too long.
There is a sublime, organic flow and thread of close listening going
on here as each of these long pieces evolve through different
sections. Perhaps this swell trio will play here at DMG in the near
future and brighten our day or night.
CD release for $14.
TERTIARY TRIO - title goes here (rent control records 009) This fine
local trio features Andy Haas on alto sax, Don Fiorino on guitar and
Paul Corio on drums. Andy Haas used to play in the Canadian new wave
sensation Martha & the Muffins many moons ago and is one Zorn's
oldest pals, hence having an early release out on (Zorn's) Avant
label, in which he plays dijeridoo and alto sax. Both Andy and Don
have played here at DMG on a few occasions, the last time Don played
here, he focused on some strange stringed ethnic instrument. I only
know of Paul Corio from running this label and his frequent sets at
the Sunday Free-Style Series at CB's Lounge. More recently, Andy has
been concentrating on soprano sax, which he is playing here. The
thing I dig most about Andy and Don is their ability to play freely
and with restraint, yet always remaining connected. The trio
flutters and spins together with delicate, understated glue. There
is an enchanting playfulness here, and without a bassist, Don tends
to concentrate on deep, low chords which growl and glow nicely,
quietly haunting. When they slow things down on "not for nothing",
they stretch out the notes and textures, giving them a strange, alien
quality, the cymbal and string rubbing make this sound almost
unnaturally weird, yet most affective. Andy seems to be working hard
at exploring all those squeaky, creaky, bent notes on his sax,
searching for those notes in between the regularly used ones. An
area that both Evan Parker and John Zorn have explored at length and
continue to do so. Don also seems to navigating the rapids and
playing a few different lines at once, in between the categories of
jazz/rock/noise, while Paul consistently dances in his balancing act,
outlining the direction of the flow. DMG is proud to present this
colossal trio here this Sunday (12/14/03) at 7pm for free. If you
live far away, you can still check them out on their new release
Essential downtown CD release for $10.
OLUYEMI THOMAS - Before the Beginning/High Zero Festival, 2002
(Recorded 011) Featuring our good friend and west coast spirit-force
mystery man Oluyemi on bass clarinet, soprano sax & musette with Jim
Baker on piano & Arp synth, Andy Hayleck on hydrophones & amplified
gong and Helena Espvall-Santoleri on cello. This was recorded at the
fourth annual High Zero Festival of Experimental Improvised Music in
Baltimore in September of 2002 and it illuminates the diverse and
distinctive nature of this great annual meeting of world-wide
improvisers, known and unknown. Oluyemi Thomas is an incredible
reeds player based in the bay area, whose music always maintains a
spiritual center, inspired by the search that most often fueled
Coltrane's sax explorations. Jim Baker is a Chicago based pianist
who can be heard on various recordings, from Vandermark through the
Chicago Underground. I can't tell you much about Andy or Helena, but
the High Zero fest is known for its ability to bring out the best in
little-known improvisers from around the planet. So far, each of
Oluyemi's half dozen previous releases have been mainly acoustic duo,
trio of quartet affairs, so it is interesting to hear him more
electronic based instrumentation. Starting with a bass clarinet and
piano duo, they organically weave their sounds, as some
electronically altered sounds slip in between the acoustic cracks.
Oluyemi's musette (a snake charmer's double reed) sounds just right
surrounded by eerie electronic ghost sounds. The electronics slowly
become more intense as Oluyemi's soprano sax finally erupts in waves,
weaving lines through and around the electronics. For the last 15
minutes Oluyemi performs in an incredible duo with Helena on acoustic
cello, both performers swirling the lines righteously together. Once
more taking their time to connect and blend their spirits into a
wonderful web of splendid tapestry. Our good friend, Oluyemi does it
right every time!
CD release for $14.
OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/PARK JE CHUN/MI YEON - Loose Community (IMJ 511) Here
Otomo plays turntables & guitar, and is active on a worldwide scale
in such fields as free improvisation, composition, and film music.
On his trip to Seoul in May of 2002, Otomo made a studio recording
with Seoul musicians Park Je Chun (percussion) and Mi Yeon (piano).
Known as a brilliant student of Kang Tae Hwan, the pioneer of the
Korean improvised music scene, Park was formerly a member of Kang's
band. Mi Yeon, an artist firmly grounded in contemporary classical
music, has collaborated with Park for a number of years. Some of the
five works on this CD are partially overdubbed with separately
recorded improvisations by Gunter Muller (electronics, selected
drums), Sachiko M (sine waves), and Yumiko Tanaka (futozao shamisen).
This is Otomo's first trio project with percussion and piano, as well
as one of his rare collaborations with Korean musicians. The
tension-filled performances are superb. This uniquely fascinating
recording should not be missed.
Japanese import CD release for $17.
JOZEF VAN WISSEM - Simulacrum/Mirror Images for Solo Lute and
Electronics (Bvhaast 0104) Who the heck plays lute in this day and
age?!? A lute is a 16 (?) string Renaissance instrument that is a
rarity nowadays. This is Bvhaast label man, Jozef Van Wissem's third
installment of a series of solo lute recordings "dedicated to the
application of mirror images in compositions". Jozef does an unusual
job of recording his lute from the inside and then sampling and
altering the acoustic material. These pieces are haunting enough
even without the scary, ghost-like shadow notes hovering around the
delicately plucked harp-like acoustic beauty of the lute. Both the
cover artwork of a many spiked (torture) chair and the occasionally
sinister vibe, make this a bit unnerving, yet fully entrancing.
Jozeph are has a fine duo effort with Gary Lucas, which we hopefully
have in stock as well...
Dutch import CD for $16
RAKU SUGIFATTI (RADU MALFATTI AND TAKU SUGIMOTO) - Futatsu [2 CD set]
(IMJ 508/9) Vienna resident, Radu Malfatti, who turns 60 in December,
is a trombonist and composer with a long and impressive career. In
the nineties he established the unique compositional/improvisational
style, using very few sounds, that he continues to develop.
Thirty-something guitarist Taku Sugimoto has since the late nineties
followed a similar path, pursuing a playing style marked by extreme
sonic spareness. His work has received critical acclaim in Japan and
abroad and has greatly influenced many young Japanese musicians.
'Futatsu' is an amazing two-cd set bringing together one studio piece
and two live-performance recordings. In the studio work, sounds are
set down one by one on a background of absolute silence. Despite
settings that take in background noise and the sound of passing cars,
their live performances are as quiet as ever. This amazing recording
will give you a new perspective on the relationship between sound and
silence.
Japanese import 2 CD set for $25.
PHILIP JECK - 7 (Touch 57) Mr. Jeck, who lives and works in
Liverpool, studied visual art at the Dartington College of Arts in
Devon, England. During the early 1980s, he drifted from painting and
sculpture to music, and began working with old and discarded
turntables. Though he's roughly a contemporary of Christian Marclay,
recognition for Jeck came much later, beginning in 1993 with his
massive installation "Vinyl Requiem", which incorporated 180 record
players and multiple film projections. This is Philip Jeck's 7th
solo album and 4th for Touch, after 'Loopholes' (1996), 'Surf' (1998)
and 'Stoke' (2002). He has also released a collaboration with Jacob
Kirkegaard, 'Soaked' (2002) and a recording of a live concert he gave
in Japan, 'Live at ICC' (2001). He is currently touring with Jah
Wobble & Deep Space, and is heavily featured on their latest album
'Five Beat' (30 Hertz Records). Philip Jeck writes: "All seven are
edits of home and concert recordings (UK Germany & Belgium) using
Bush, Ferguson, Fidelity & Philips record-players, Sony portable
mini-disc and Casio keyboards. "Bush Hum" was made from the
amplified hum of a Bush record-player and delay pedal. 'Wipe' was
originally made for a video by Marisa Zanotti.
CD release for $15.
CHARLOTTE HUG/CHANTALE LAPLANTE - Brilliant Days (For 4 Ears 1446)
Featuring Charlotte Hug on viola & electronics and Chantale Laplante
on laptop. Charlotte is from Zurich, while Chantale hails from
Montreal; they met in London in 2001. Hug is a viola performer who
also composes works using 3D graphic scores and multi-channels sound
installations. Laplante is a composer of contemporary instrumental
and electro-acoustic music. On 'Brilliant Days' Hug plays viola with
the unique bow techniques she has developed and manipulates her
sounds with electronics; whiole Laplante uses her own sounds which
she transforms during the performance. 'Brilliant Days' focuses on
the playfulness between acoustic and electro-acoustic sounds,
exploring their contrast and fusion; it invites the listener into a
journey of 'sons inous'.
"
CD release $15.
URS LEIMGRUBER/GNTER MLLER/ARTE QUARTET - e_a.sonata.02 (FOR 4 Ears
1447) Featuring Urs Leimgruber (composition, soprano, tenorsax);
Gnter Mller (processing, selected drums, mds, ipod, electronics);
Beat Hofstettler: (soprano sax); Sascha Armbruster: (alto, electric
sax); Andrea Formenti: (tenor sax); Beat Kappeler: (baritone, alto
sax). Urs Leimgruber wrote his composition 'e_a.sonata.02' for the
Arte Quartet, a sax quartet based in Basel Switzerland that is known
for its collaborations with Tim Berne, Pierre Favre and Thomas
Dimunzio. Gnter Mller plays with sounds from the Arte Quartet that
he had processed before.
CD release $15.
AMBARCHI/MLLER/SAMARTZIS - Strange Love (For 4 Ears 1448) Featuring
Oren Ambarchi: (guitar, electronics); Gnter Mller: (selected
percussion & electronics) and Philip Samartzis: (electronics and
environmental sounds). The first piece 'Cooler' was recorded at the
festival 'What Is Music?' in Melbourne in 2002. The second piece was
individually recorded in Melbourne, Itingen und Sydney and conceived
by Gnter Mller as 'Warmer'.
CD release $15.
ANTHONY BROWN'S ASIAN AMERICAN ORCHESTRA with STEVE LACY - Monk's
Moods (Water Baby 1001) A splendid tribute to Thelonious Monk by a
great west coast (13 piece) jazz orchestra with some exotic
instruments like a Chinese mouth organ and hammered dulcimer. The
unique instrumental make-up features a large reeds section with Steve
Lacy, Francis Wong, Melecio Magdaluyo, Hafez Modirzadeh & Jim Norton
on assorted saxes & clarinets; Louis Fasman & John Worley on
trumpets, Dave Martell & Wayne Wallace on trombones; Hong Wang on
Chinese viola & mouth organ, Yang Qin Zhao on Chinese hammered
dulcimer and led by percussionist Anthony Brown. The opening is duo
for hammered dulcimer and viola playing "Monk's Mood", hard to
picture, yet it works and it shows an ancient quality to Monk's
unique melody, the song slows the pulse down so that the horns' lush,
warm tones can be savored with Melecio taking an exquisitely tasty
alto solo. Although "Jackie-ing" starts with a haunting dulcimer
intro, it moves into more of Latin-jazz groove with Anthony's strong
drums leading the way and Steve Lacy inspired to take an even greater
(Monk) solo than he usually does. "Brilliant Corners" is another
(brilliant) surprise, hearing that Monk melody played on the hammered
dulcimer & mouth organ, must be heard to be believed. If you really
need to know, Steve Lacy takes wonderful solos on half of the tunes
found here, but there is a number of fine soloists all over this
grand work - especially Wayne Wallace on trombone, Jim Norton on
reeds and John Worley & Louis Fasman on trumpets. There is no piano
player here, odd for a Monk tribute, thus the horns are uniquely
arranged with fascinating harmonies throughout. These are some of
the best Monk covers heard in years, so why not treat yourself to
this difficult-to-find treasure.
CD release for $15.
ELLIOTT CARTER - Quintets and Voices [DVD] (Mode 128) First
Recordings of "Quintet for Piano & Strings" (1997), "Fragment for
String Quartet" (1999), "Quintet for Piano & Winds" (1991) - Steve
Taylor on oboe, Charles Neiditch on clarinet, William Purvis on horn,
Frank Morelli on bassoon, "Syringa "(1978) for soprano, bass &
ensemble; "Tempo e Tempi" (1998) for soprano, violin, oboe, clarinet
& cello; "Retrouvailles" (2000) for piano solo - The Arditti Quartet,
Ursula Oppens. Piano, Lucy Shelton, soprano, Andre Solomon-Glover,
bass, Ensemble Sospeso, Stefan Asbury and Jeffrey Milarsky,
conductors. An American master in 24-bit with 96khz sound, available
on DVD for the first time. Released to celebrate the 95th birthday
of Elliott Carter this year, an amazing figure who remains one of
America's most active and vital composers. This collection combines
two of his quintets with two major works for voice(s) and ensemble
and two recent, extraordinary miniatures.
DVD for $27.
PIERRE DIAZ/THOMAS CARBOU - 3 Quartets (DiCi Records 001) Formerly
French based guitarist Thomas Carbou currently lives in Montreal.
His co-leader here is Pierre Diaz who plays tenor sax. As the title
says, there are three quartets here, three different rhythm teams -
Lonnie Plaxico & Lionel Cordew, Jean-Bertrand Carbou & Patrice Beland
and Thomas Potre & Frederic Marchal, all on bass & drums
respectively. "Equilibrium" is a fine, funky, jazz-rockin' groove
tune with Thomas' slinky, sly jazz-tone and tasty, subtle wah-wah
guitar - there is a Miles-like voodoo vibe here, both the tenor sax
and el. guitar sailing together. Thomas plays with eloquence on "NY
Traffic", a soulful, gospelish melody and superb guitar and tenor
solos. By the time we get to "7ieme Jour", we're off into the fusion
zone, with some burnin' guitar and sax solos, pushed by a charging
rhythm team (Lonnie & Lionel). The short explosive drum solo at the
end sounds a lot like John Marshall (Soft Machine & Nucleus) to me.
When they turn it all the way down, like "Friday in July", they play
with angelic grace that would be difficult to not be moved by. I
can't recall the last time I heard a great fusion record from a
current band, but this is certainly as good as it gets. My pal,
postman Steve, has heard Thomas Carbou live at the Knit and at the 55
Bar on Christopher St. Time to check out this gifted guitarist live.
The is the first of three cds that Carbou left with us to sell, the
others will be reviewed in the near future.
CD only release for $14.
CARLITO VERDE - "Objectively, Dude" (8 Track Stereo 004) This
Brooklyn-based trio consist of Ty Bertrand, Dave Read & Tony Rohr. I
know of Ty through his work with trumpeter Jordan MacLean. Carlito
Verde play a sorta friendly, electronic groove music, funky, without
being in-yo-face; cheesy synths or samplers, an old drum machine and
maybe a bit of guitar; yet still charming in a refreshing, nave way.
Parts of this remind me of a less engaging version of early Tangerine
Dream. They slightly mutate a robot voiced being and often settle on
the quieter side of things. This music makes we wanna dance around
with a silly grin on, but not really think too much. Probably good
music for a party in Brooklyn, but I haven't been to a party in a
while, so I wouldn't know for sure.
CD release for $10.
JUST IN - GREAT REISSUES, RESTOCKS & HISTORIC RECORDINGS!!!
ERIK FRIEDLANDER & TOPAZ - Skin [DVD] (Siam) Cellist Erik Friedlander and
his sensational band Topaz were captured live in a beautiful
set-decorated studio with guest artists and beautifully costumed
dancers including Amira Mor and Marlon Barrios. This DVD also
features stunning computer animation as well as in-depth interviews.
We can offer this for less than the wholesale cost, since the label
went out of business, meaning we probably can't get more, so...!
Out-of-print DVD for $12
JOHN ZORN/TOM CORA/EUGENE CHADBOURNE/TOSHINORI KONDO/POLLY
BRADFIELD/ANDREA CENTAZZO - Environment For Sextet (Ictus/New Tone)
The very beginning of the current NY "Downtown" Music scene from the
late 70's back when Kondo (trumpet w/ dunce cap mute), Chadbourne
(guitar w/ strings hanging off), Bradfield (violin played with a comb
& toothbrush) and Centazzo (Italian percussionist) lived in New York
and worked in various line-ups with Zorn (sax & clarinet mouthpieces
& bird calls) and Cora, cellist improviser supreme! These sextet
improvs and various solo improvs [and one duet not on the original
super-rare LP edition] were recorded live at the Columbia U. WKCR

various line-ups with Zorn & Cora! These various duets, trios,
quartet and sextet recordings found here were recorded live during a
tour of the US East Coast - where they meet up with Davey (guitar) &

along the way - during Nov-Dec 1978, which virtually predates the

DOME - 1 / 2 (Mute/Grey 1/2) Budget price reissue of Dome's first and
second records, a post-Wire project by Messrs. Bruce Gilbert and
Graham Lewis, recorded 1980-82. Dome gave up the realm of
verse/chorus songwriting to concentrate on and develop their own
craft within the studio environment, pushing themselves (and the
listener) to newer territories of textures, rhythms, noises, so no
one could say that they were easy listening, but their sound is
seductive, penetrating and above all, long-lasting...and of required
listening to all our DMG sonic explorers!
Two complete albums on a single CD for $14.
DOME - 3 / 4 (Mute/Grey 3/4) Budget priced cd reissue of Dome's third
and fourth records, a post-Wire project by Messrs. Bruce Gilbert and
Graham Lewis, recorded 1980-82. Whereas Wire inspired awe from their
seeming scientific approach to punk and pop tunes, Dome's records are
comprised of a lot of the unsettling sounds that color Pink Flag and
Chairs Missing, and began to come to the fore on 154 and after.
Cerebral is one word that comes to mind, and this time around it's
not tempered with 'songs', more like 'processes'. All four Dome
records constantly make me wonder whether I'm transfixed or just so
enervated from the whole experience that I can't stand up to change
the record. I suggested here at the office that these tracks
sometimes sound like a Profan 12" without the kick drum, just the
grimy loops, but that remark was received with a sort of blank stare,
whatever. Kind of cool, depending on your emotional stability. For
fans of: clothes dryers, Epstein-Barr Virus and public
transportation. - Billy Kiely from FE
Two complete albums on a single CD for $14.
WIRE - Pink Flag (Harvest; UK) Perhaps the most original debut album
to come out of the first wave of British punk, Wire''s Pink Flag
plays like The Ramones Go to Art School - song after song careens
past in a glorious, stripped-down rush. However, unlike the Ramones,
Wire ultimately made their mark through unpredictability. Very few of
the songs followed traditional verse/chorus structures - if one or
two riffs sufficed, no more were added; if a musical hook or lyric
didn't need to be repeated, Wire immediately stopped playing,
accounting for the album's brevity (21 songs in under 36 minutes on
the original version). The sometimes dissonant, minimalist
arrangements allow for space and interplay between the instruments;
Colin Newman displays an acerbic wit and balances the occasional
lyrical abstraction with plenty of bile in his delivery. Many punk
bands aimed to strip rock & roll of its excess, but Wire took the
concept a step further, cutting punk itself down to its essence and
achieving an even more concentrated impact. Some of the tracks may
seem at first like underdeveloped sketches or fragments, but further
listening demonstrates that in most cases, the music is memorable
even without the repetition and structure most ears have come to
expect - it simply requires a bit more concentration. And Wire is
full of ideas; for such a fiercely minimalist band, they display
quite a musical range, spanning slow, haunting texture exercises,
warped power pop, punk anthems, and proto-hardcore rants - it's
recognizable, yet simultaneously quite unlike anything that preceded
it. Pink Flag's enduring influence pops up in hardcore, post-punk,
alternative rock, and even Brit-pop, and it still remains a fresh,
invigorating listen today: a fascinating, highly inventive rethinking
of punk rock and its freedom to make up your own rules. - Steve Huey,
AMG
This edition add the indispensable singles cuts "Dot Dash" and
"Options R" as bonus cuts!
UK CD for $14
WIRE - Chairs Missing (Harvest; UK) Chairs Missing marks a partial
retreat from Pink Flag's austere, bare-bones minimalism, although it
still takes concentrated listening to dig out some of the melodies.
Producer Mike Thorne's synth adds a Brian Eno-esque layer of
atmospherics, and Wire itself seems more concerned with the sonic
textures they can coax from their instruments; the tempos are slower,
the arrangements employ more detail and sound effects, and the band
allows itself to stretch out on a few songs. The results are a bit
variable - "Mercy," in particular, meanders for too long - but
compelling much more often than not. The album's clear high point is
the statement of purpose "I Am the Fly," which employs an
emphasis-shifting melody and guitar sounds which actually evoke the
sound of the title insect. In general, the lyrics are darker than
those on Pink Flag, even morbid at times; images of cold, drowning,
pain, and suicide haunt the record, and the title itself is a
reference to mental instability. The arty darkness of Chairs Missing,
combined with the often icy-sounding synth/guitar arrangements, help
make the record a crucial landmark in the evolution of punk into
post-punk and goth, as well as a testament to Wire's rapid
development and inventiveness. [The CD reissue contains three bonus
tracks: the fine non-LP single "A Question of Degree" and the B-sides
"Go Ahead" and "Outdoor Miner [long version]" - Steve Huey, AMG
UK CD for $14
WIRE - 154 (Harvest; UK) Named for the number of live gigs Wire had
played to that point, 154 refines and expands the innovations of
Chairs Missing, with producer Mike Thorne's synthesizer effects
playing an even more integral role; little of Pink Flag's rawness
remains. If Chairs Missing was a transitional album between punk and
post-punk, 154 is squarely in the latter camp, devoting itself to
experimental soundscapes that can sound cold and forbidding at times.
However, the best tracks retain their humanity thanks to the
arrangements' smooth, seamless blend of electronic and guitar
textures and the beauty of the group's melodies. Where previously
some of Wire's hooks could find themselves buried or not properly
brought out, the fully fleshed-out production of 154 lends a sweeping
splendor to "The 15th," the epic "A Touching Display," "A Mutual
Friend," and the gorgeous (if obscurely titled) "Map Ref. 41N 93W."
It's difficult to believe that a band which evolved as quickly and
altered its sound as restlessly as Wire did could be out of ideas
after only three years and three albums, but such was the case
according to its members, and with their (temporary, as it turned
out) disbandment following this album, Wire's most fertile and
influential period came to a close. [The CD reissue features four
bonus tracks from an experimental EP issued with some copies of the
vinyl LP.] - Steve Huey, AMG

BEN WATT - North Marine Drive & Summer Into Winter (Get Back 635)

his legendary solo album, 'North Marine Drive' which hit number one
on the indie chart in 1983. This reissue includes a cover of Bob
Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" plus five bonus
tracks of Watt's collaboration with Robert Wyatt singing exquisitely
sad backing vocals. The CD version is currently out-of-print, so

BILL LASWELL - City Of Light + Hashisheen [2 CD set] (Sub Rosa
114/154) Special double cd slipcase edition of these two classics,
from 1997/99. Both of Laswell's masterpieces feature a huge list of
very special guests: Coil, Trilok Gurtu, Genesis P-Orridge, Techno
Animal, Patti Smith, Tetsu Inoue, Lori Carson, Hakim Bey, Anton Fier,
Jah Wobble, Iggy Pop & William S. Burroughs.
About 'City Of Light': "This album was recorded in Banaras, India,
and mixed in Greenpoint, NY. Music composed by Bill Laswell, Coil,
Trilok Gurtu, Tetsu Inoue with featured texts and vocals from Lori
Carson. 'City of Light' is about Banaras, a city older then history,
tradition, than legends. It is Shiva's land, founded at the dawn of
creation. It is India's oldest and most fabled city. The Hindus call
it Kashi, the luminous... 'The City of Light.
About 'Hashisheen': "This is the result of two years of hard work and
collaborations. This conceptual project guided and supervised by
Bill Laswell is presents with voices and music from artists such as:
William S. Burroughs, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Anne Clark, Jah Wobble,
Paul Schutze, Techno Animal, Genesis P-Orridge, Jah Wobble and

JACKIE McLEAN - the jackie mac attack live (Dreyfus Jazz 37022)
Recorded live for Radio Holland in April of 1991 and featuring Jackie
Mac on alto sax, Hotep Idris Galeta on piano, Nat Reeves on bass and
Carl Allen on drums. Jackie Mac never ceases to amaze me - he is one
the last of the great alto sax legends that evolved out of bebop
through hard bop and freer gems in the sixties and continues to play
marvelously today, well into his 70's! This hot date is from '91 and
it smokes right from the gitgo! Both Jackie and South African piano
giant Hotep take long, inspired solos and the great rhythm team also
swing their butts off throughout. Anywho, this doesn't need any
other accolades, just got to play it in the store and see who is left
standing. Solid jackson!

TRIBUTE TO DAVE BRUBECK [V.A.] - In His Own Sweet Way (Avant 005;
Japan) with Dave Slusser, Uri Caine, Pachora, Bill Frisell, Ruins,
Medeski, Martin and Wood, Anthony Coleman, Eyvind Kang, Slowpoke,
Erik Friedlander, Sex Mob, Dave Douglas, Joey Baron, David Krakauer.
"Dave Brubeck is an enigma. Vilified by the underground
intelligentsia for his stiff rhythmic feel and high record sales,
Brubeck was a daring and distinctive composer whose experiments in
expanding the language of jazz never got in the way of his natural
melodic sense. Cross cultural influences, exotic scales and rhythms,
experiments with odd time signatures, polytonality and unusual bar
lengths are common place today in the music of cutting edge young
jazzers like Steve Coleman, Dave Douglas and the like, but in the
1950s they raised more than a few eyebrows. Brubeck was the first.
This is a tribute to a misunderstood experimentalist who introduced
these elements into jazz over forty years ago in his own sweet way.

JOE MANERI - Paniots Nine (Avant 067; Japan) An exciting first
release of Joe's legendary 1963 quartet recordings ! In the past 10
years, more and more people have become aware of the music of Joe
Maneri. Born in Brooklyn in 1927, Joe has been a professional
musician since 1941. A veteran of countless bands, his experience as
a musician-for-hire gave him a unique insight into a wide variety of
music, from jazz and classical, to Klezmer and Greek wedding music.
Integrating these musics into a personal vision as early as the mid
50's, Maneri is a true American original, anticipating the exciting
new music of the AACM, and the more recent developments of Dave
Douglas, Don Byron (who studied with Joe at the New England
Conservatory), Paradox Trio and countless others. These are the

finely-focused album, investigating the textures and spirit of Ennio
Morricone's Spaghetti Western soundtracks with guitar twang virtuosos
Robert Quine (Lou Reed, Richard Hell & The Voidoids) and Marc Ribot
(Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull). From desolate
soundscapes to urgent and explosive tribal drumming, Mori's rhythms

be excellent.

DAVID MURRAY With DAVE BURRELL/FRED HOPKINS/RALPH PETERSON Jr -
Ballads (DIW 840; Japan) David Murray (ts), Dave Burrell (p), Fred
Hopkins (b), Ralph Peterson Jr. (ds). Recorded at A&R Recording, New
York in January, 1988. In his amazing masterpiece "Lovers", David
Murray, who is famous for his radical play rooting in 70s loft jazz,
played ballads over the whole work. This work is a sequel to
"Lovers". Including the heartrending songs composed by him and his
sworn friend Dave Burrell (p) who is both an active player in the
free jazz scene and a great melody maker, and the pungent solo tune
by the freak tone of his forte. This marvelous work is not only
emotional but also the one that never tends to be a superficial
sentimentalism, and so, even hard-liners will recognize this work
very much!

NYC in January, 1988. The recording of this album was done by the
same members at the same day of the recording of "Lovers" (DIW-814).
"Lovers" is a graceful ballad album, but in this album, manipulating
brilliant big tone, he is blowing and blowing. It is no exaggeration
to say that this album showed one perfected formality of hard driving
jazz.

New York in January 1988. David Murray, who praises from the masters

no exaggeration to say that this work reveals an essential part of
him.

Darryl Jones and Robert Irving III, both of whom played with Miles
Davis and helped create his sound in the 1980s. "Jug-A-Lug" has an
original tribute to Ornette Coleman by percussionist Kahil El Zabar,
a lovely ballad by guitarist Broom and five tunes by David including
another classic of his, Morning Song. Both of these discs reveal

ability to make fresh contemporary jazz that reaches out to an
audience and is both expressive and groovy!

NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Absinthe (Avant 004; Japan) Absinthe is
one of John Zorn's most mysterious and elusive creations -- a strange
twisted take on the legacies of Messiaen and ambient music. Joey
Baron plays bags of dry leaves, fishing reels and buckshot, Bill
Frisell solos on a microtonal guitar, Wayne Horvitz samples
everything from crickets to Giacinto Scelsi, Fred Frith does what he
does best, and Zorn doesn't even touch the saxophone. Exquisite
analog recording at Electric Ladyland studio by Joe Ferla. Absinthe,
originally released in 1993, is a dark and perplexing album that is
considered by many to be Naked City's best work.

NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Grand Guignol (Avant 002; Japan) This is
the controversial CD that sparked Zorn's break with Nonesuch Records.
Planned as the second Naked City album, the release was delayed for
years over both musical and artistic issues. Exploring the darker
side of human creativity, Grand Guignol is divided into three parts.
The title track is a long paean to the theatre of shock and horror
that took Paris by storm at the turn of the century. Stark and
intense, Grand Guignol is one of Zorn's major long form compositions.
Also included are Zorn's sensual arrangements of classical music by
Messiaen, Scriabin, Ives and Debussy. The final third of the CD
contains 33 of the seminal hardcore miniatures that made Naked City
famous. Uncompromising cover art and music from one of the most
original and eclectic bands of the 1990's. Naked City: John Zorn (as,
vo), Bill Frisell (g), Wayne Horvitz (key), Fred Frith (b), Joey
Baron (ds), Yamataka Eye (vo) Special Guest Vocalist: Bob Dorough

units of duets and trios. Moody, extreme - almost exilerating, many
die hard fans consider Heretic their favorite Naked City album.
Includes the first of many collaborative duet recordings by Yamataka
Eye / John Zorn and Joey Baron / Bill Frisell. John Zorn (as), Bill
Frisell (g), Wayne Horvitz (key), Fred Frith (b), Joey Baron (ds),

NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Radio (Avant 003; Japan) In its brief but
influential 5-year life span, Naked City released 7 albums of
astonishing breadth and originality. Originally released in 1993,
Radio captures Naked City at the height of its powers, a band capable
of anything from surf to nuts. R&B, country-rock, free jazz, hardcore
punk, cartoon music, heavy metal, movie soundtracks and world-beat
are all explored in John Zorn's radical compositional style, making
this perhaps the best entry-way into Naked CityÕs eclectic and
intense world of sound. Originally conceived as a radio show for
college radio, this delightful program of screams, funk beats, tender
ballads and horrible noise is Naked City's party record. Fun for the
whole family, dysfunctional or not. John Zorn (as, vo), Bill Frisell
(g), Wayne Horvitz (key), Fred Frith (b), Joey Baron (ds), Yamataka

NEW YORK ART QUARTET - 35TH Reunion (DIW 936; Japan) Milford Graves
(ds), Roswell Rudd (tb), John Tchicai (sax), Reggie Workman (b),
Amiri Baraka (poetry reading on some cuts). The reunion of a
legendary new music group. The NYAQ made their first records for the
ESP label in 1964 and created an esthetic that in some sense created
free jazz. With only the bassist different, this extraordinary
collective is back making sounds that are guaranteed to take you to
wild and different places. The players are remarkable; Rudd, who
started in dixieland and has been in the vanguard of new music for
the trombone while never losing his street smarts; Tchicai, from
Denmark, who has a smart identifiable sound that was part of the
dense weave of the original; Graves, possibly the most innovative
drummer of the late 20th century; and bassist Workman, who played
with Coltrane and offers power, grace and intelligence. The group is
also joined by poet Amiri Baraka (aka Leroi Jones), last seen in
Warren Beatty'fs film Bulworth.

of thousands of sound bites from musics known and unknown into a
dizzying sonic whirlwind. You have never heard anything quite like
Plexure, and you are likely never to forget it. A close collaborator

WILLIE OTERI With MIKE KENEALLY/TONY LEVIN/PAT MASTELOTTO/EPHRAIM
OWENS/RONAN CHRIS MURPHY - Spiral Out (DIW 466; Japan) Produced by R
C Murphy. Tired of buying sideman projects of players in groups you
like[d]? Well, I am! Just when I thought I'd never buy another
non-Crimson album to hear Tony Levin, along comes this inspired
release from this Austin, Texas (by way of Japan!) guitar wonderkind
Willie Oteri, whose styles range from superfast runs (a la Keneally)
to Hendrixian blues to Frippian washes. The basic quartet tracks
of Oteri, keyboardist Murphy (who has produced Takeharu Hayakawa
[Ruins] among others and engineered/mixed many of the live Crimson
releases for the Collector's Club), and King Crimson rhythm section
Levin and Mastelotto were laid down in 2001 with Mike Keneally's
organ and Fender Rhodes and Ephraim Owens' trumpet overdubbed in
early 2002. A really heady mix of sounds and styles - some tracks
reminiscent of 70's Miles/Tony Williams Lifetime, while others,
especially "Sundial/Spiral Out" and "First Light" are 1st rate
Crimsonesque (makes you wonder what Crimso would be like if Oteri
took over Belew's guitar chair - possibly re-invigorated!) All are
playing great here - Four Thumbs UP! -mannylunch

ZEENA PARKINS - Isabelle (Avant 018; Japan) Isabelle is one of Zeena
Parkins' most important composition to date, the first in a trilogy
of long form compositions. Dedicated to the legendary explorer,
writer and wander, Isabelle Eberhardt, who became fascinated with
Algeria, converted to Islam and became initiated into a secret Sufi
sect before the premature death at the age of 27. This complex work
combines classical composition and improvisation in a new and
provocative hybrid. Heartfelt, melodic, sensuous, this essential
recording is an evocative tribute to one of the most elusive women of
the twentieth century. Also included is an exciting duet with the
brilliant electronic percussionist Ikue Mori inspired by the comic
book superhero Wonder Woman. Zeena Parkins (sampler, el.harp, p,
sn.drum, East Berlin toy), Lisa Crowder (p), Margaret Parkins

Patton (org), Dave Hubbard (ts), Ed Cherry (g), Eddie Gladden (ds),
Lawrence Killian (per). Produced by John Zorn & Kazunori Suguyama.
Recorded at Power Station, NYC on December 26, 1995. The sound of the
classic organ group is back - presented by one of the truly great
innovators on the Hammond B-3 organ, John Patton. Patton is an
original - never just a copier of Jimmy Smith, but an inspired and
spiritual player and composer. (He was even inspired and influenced
by John Coltrane!) John Zorn, who is a giant fan of Patton, has
produced this bold and original album which still somehow hearkens to
the great Blue Note and Prestige organ albums of days gone by. The
band includes the solid saxophonist Dave Hubbard, the complete
guitarist Ed Cherry (who played and recorded for 14 years with Dizzy
Gillespie) and the tasty timekeeper, drummer Eddie Gladden. Five of
the tunes are by Patton and the band also tackles Steam by Archie
Shepp, Syeedafs Song Flute by John Coltrane and Children Of The
Night by Wayne Shorter.

JOHN PATTON With JOHN ZORN - Minor Swing (DIW 896; Japan) John
Patton (org), John Zorn (as), Ed Cherry (g), Kenny Wollesen (ds).
Produced by John Zorn & Kazunori Sugiyama. Recorded at Power
Station, NYC on December 21, 1994. John Zorn has always been a fan
of the funky tenor and organ music that was so much a part of the
Blue Note label in the 1960's and 1970's. One of the most dynamic of
the organists from those records was the so soulful John Patton; or
Big John Patton as he was known then. Patton is still groovin' after
all these years as this killer session with Zorn proves. He's more
than just a funkmeister, though. Says Harvey Pekar, "You hear
something familiar in his work and think you can predict where it's
going, but it turns out you're not always right / he makes every note
count." This is a very special and inspired album indee! Zorn's full
range of alto sax sounds and techniques show how much he loves
Patton's - listen to his phenomenal solo on "The Way I Feel" which
Zorn also covered with Naked City on 'Live Vol 1: Knitting Factory
1989' on the Tzadik label. All of the tunes are Patton's except the
great Tyrone, written by the late organist Larry Young.

Mingus bands and groups with Don Pullen; the revolutionary Ornette;
inspired guitarist James Blood Ulmer; former Coltrane drummer Rashied
Ali; and bassist Sirone of legendary Revolutionaly Ensemble. All of
them performed extensively through Free jazz and Loft jazz periods in

of, and with Shrek he has invented yet another. Shrek is Marc's
ultimate compositional statement to date : an atavistic exploration
of the primitive, the banal and the despised. Featuring an incredible
band of Chris Wood (Medeski, Martin & Wood), Sebastian Steinberg
(Soul Coughing), Christine Bard and Jim Pugliese (ESP), Marc Anthony
Thompson (on auto-erotic harp!) and the ubiquitous David Shea on

long-running Knitting Factory performances of John Zorn's game piece
Cobra. His brass quintet, Mundane Dissatisfactions, has been recorded
by the Meridian Arts Ensemble on Channel Classics. Mark Degliantoni
has gone on to fame as the sampler player in the pop band Soul
Coughing, and has also performed and recorded with Anthony Coleman,
