AND NOW, ON WITH THE NEW STUFF!
OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/BILL LASWELL/YOSHIGAKI YASUHIRO - Soup (P-Vine 5856;
Japan) OK, fans of Painkiller, Massacre and even Last Exit - this
one's for you! Damn, I've been waiting more than two years for
something this hard-hitting involving bass-supremo Laz, this time in
a killer power trio with Otomo [guitars and occasionally turntables]
and, from Otomo's New Jazz Quintet, Yasuhiro [drums]. Four long
pieces: "Mushroom", "Seaweed", "Crab", and of course "Duck" [Soup].
We had to get these from Japan ourselves, so stock is ltd.
CD for $23
OTOMO YOSHIHIDE'S NEW JAZZ QUINTET + TATSUYA OE - ONJQ+OE (P-Vine
5850; Japan) What happens when programmer/processor Oe gets involved
with the quirky ONJQ? The result here is two long pieces that seem to
start with chopped up resequenced samples of the group as a whole
actually fed back leading into the band, or various members, playing
in real time, creating slow-moving jazzy-jams. We had to get these
from Japan ourselves, so stock is ltd.
CD for $23
OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/TAKEO YAMASHITA - Plays The Music Of Takeo Yamashita
(P-Vine 5804; Japan) Possibly you've heard of Mr Yamashita? He was
the composer of soundtracks for several classic Japanese
fims/animated features in the '60s and '70s [Giant Robot, Playgirl,
Lupin The Third, Akuma Kun et al] . Here Otomo pays homage to what
obviously was one of his childhood musical inspirations by producing
an album of ingeneous covers with varying lineups from one cut to the
next, featuring a wide array of well-known Japanese New Music players
and vocalists: Sachiko M, Phew, Otomo, Haco, Tenko, Seiichi Yamamoto,
Kazuo Imai, Kumiko Takara et al, along with Otomo's New Jazz Quintet
backing on several of the 17 cuts. We had to get these from Japan
ourselves, so stock is ltd.
CD for $23
DANIEL CARTER/SHANIR EZRA BLUMENKRANZ/KEVIN ZUBEK - Chinatown (Not
Two 753) Featuring Daniel on tenor & soprano saxes, trumpet, flute &
clarinet; Shanir on bass & oud and Kevin on drums & percussion. You
just gotta love the unstoppable Daniel Carter for constant
resourcefulness by playing more inspired and diverse musicians no
matter what their background or genre is. Here Daniel goes
head-to-head with one of the best young rhythm teams in NY - Shanir &
Kevin from the great Israeli avant jazz trio - Satlah and also the
Lemon juice Quartet. Shanir Blumenkranz plays both acoustic and
electric basses (and oud!) and has become one of the most in-demand
local heroes over the past five years, playing with giants like
Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Jon Madof, Louie Belogenis and more.
This super studio date was recorded righteously by former Laswell
engineer Martin Bisi and he has done a great job of capturing this
splendid, spiritual, free-jazz trio in their perfectly balanced
glory. There are some fine somber moments when Shanir bows his bass
reflectively as Daniel's tenor drifts over Kevin's nimble percussion.
"Sun Dou" opens with Shanir's eloquent and exotic oud playing, as
Daniel's melancholy tenor once again floats dreamily on top. As with
many projects that Daniel is involved with, there is no leader here,
often the bass and occasionally the drums will start a piece and set
the pace, as all three players listen closely, respond and
consistently connect. This hour-long set is wonderfully inspired and
free-flowing throughout. We look forward to hearing this great trio
at the Sunday Night Free-Style Series at CB's Lounge in the
not-to-distant future.
Polish CD for $16
PAUL DUNMALL - Newsagents (Duns 032) Featuring Dunmall on tenor &
soprano saxes, Philip Gibbs on guitar, Andrew Ball on piano &
celeste, Neil Metcalfe on flute and Hilary Jeffreys on trombone.
Since Mujician sax legend Paul Dunmall started the great Duns label
in the mid-nineties, he has consistently presented (over a dozen)
great yet little known improvisers to his fans worldwide. More
recently some of these fine players (like Mr. Jeffreys) have turned
up on other (non-Dunmall) sessions on the Emanem and FMR labels. All
members of this quintet, except for pianist Andrew Ball, have been on
a number of previous Duns discs, so we are becoming more familiar
with their abilities. Since 'Newsagents' has no rhythm section, it
deals with highly focused improv that doesn't necessarily have to
swing or rely on a constant pulse. The title track is 46 minutes of
restrained, yet intricate interaction. Often the three horns (sax,
flute & 'bone) will swirl slowly as the create hypnotic long-tones,
bending and blending slowly into a cautious dream-world. Philip
Gibbs plays acoustic guitar and has been on many Duns discs so far,
often plays with a sublime and fragile beauty, delicately weaving his
lines with breathtaking resources as Andrew Ball plays dark chords
underneath the ghost-like horns flutters. As on all Duns discs
recorded at the Victoria Room in Bristol, Jonathan Scott's recording
is warm and perfectly balanced. There is a section where the celeste,
acoustic guitar and flute play with such restraint that it like
walking on egg shells. Superb, sublime and filled with elegance.
Need we say more, I think not.
CD for $14
URI CAINE - Dark Flame (Winter & Winter 095) Featuring Uri Caine on
piano, Mark Feldman on violin, Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Don Byron on
clarinets, David Gilmore on guitar, DJ Olive on turntables, Chen Sisi
on yang-quin, Chan Toa on dizi, Michael Formanek on bass, Jim Black
on drums and Aaron Bensusan, Sadiq Bey, Mark Chin & the Kent Wiger
Bach Choir all on vocals. This is more Mahler music arranged by W&W
super-hero and piano wonder Uri Caine performed live and of course,
we are just excited as you! In stock by next Tuesday and longer
review next Friday.
CD for $15
PAUL MURPHY - Red Snapper: Paul Murphy at CBS (Cadence 1167)
Featuring Jimmy Lyons on alto sax, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Karen
Borca on bassoon, Mary Anne Driscoll on piano & voice and Paul Murphy
on drums & percussion. This is a Columbia studio recording from June
of 1982 and we did make a mistake in last week's newsletter by
mentioning that this was Jimmy Lyon's date, when in fact it was Paul
Murphy's. Formerly based in San Francisco, drum wiz Paul Murphy moved
to NY in the early 70's and was most fortunate to be able to record
in the legendary Columbia Records studio for this historic date. 'Red
Snapper' consists of some 19 pieces, all under six minutes but still
over an hour in length, a number of solos, duos and trios as well as
the quintet are featured. Although I completely unfamiliar with Mary
Anne and Paul (except for another date or two with Jimmy Lyons), both
the piano and drums are endlessly inventive throughout. The first
two pieces consist of solo drums and are filled with restrained fire.
The quintet soon erupt on "The Scenery 1" with some high flying
trumpet blasting on top of the cascading piano and drums. There are
numerous duos for Jimmy's alto sax and Paul's drums which are all
incredible, burning together with some fierce and intense force. If
you do or don't already own that colossal Jimmy Lyons 5 cd box set on
Ayler Records, you still would want to own this essential session as
well - it is a wonderful thing to have this long lost gem available!
CD for $14
KEVIN NORTON'S LIVING LANGUAGE - Intuitive Structures (Cadence 1166)
Featuring Louie Belogenis on tenor & soprano saxes, Tomas Ulrich on
cello, John Lindberg on contrabass and Kevin Norton on vibes,
percussion & drums. This fine quartet date was recorded live at the
Knit's Old Office in November of 2002, back when the Knit still
presented some downtown musicians Local percussion hero and
composer Kevin Norton has a number of different projects or bands
that exist simultaneously, each one has a different personality, a
different concept. In the liner notes Kevin mentions that Living
Language is about understanding the history and language of creative
music and thus letting it grow and change. This all-star quartet
embodies this philosophy by taking what they've learned and
collectively building upon blending of spirits and ideas. 'Intuitive
Structures' consists of four long pieces, including two versions of
"Walking the Dogma". The version from the second set opens this cd
and begins quietly with nimble vibes and slow-burning bass, later
Louie's tenor enters and soars quickly, when Kevin moves over to the
drums and starts swinging hard and fanning the flames, followed by
strong solos from Tomas' cello and Kevin's spirited vibes. "Etude
for Ricky W." is an intense group improv that erupts with nervous
energy - soprano sax squawking, extensive bowed and percussively
plucked bass and cello as Kevin creates fractured lines with hands
and sticks on the drums and cymbals. Both strings once again weave
their masterful sounds, buzzing richly together as Kevin's magical
vibes shimmer and provide alien drones from time to time. The first
version of "Walking the Dogma" closes this release and begins with an
impressive drum solo, this is another long and winding journey that
moves through varied sections and inspired solos from all members of
this monstrous quartet. Living Language is a most apt name for this
great quartet.
CD for $14
DOMINIC DUVAL/CONSTANCE COOPER/FIRST AVENUE - coming from us
(Quixotic Records 5007) Featuring First Avenue which is William
Kannar on bass & electronics; C. Bryan Rulon on piano & synth and
Matt Sullivan on oboe, English horn & electronics with Dominic Duval
on small bass plus John Lad, Kurt Briggs, Erich Schoen-Rene, Matt
Goeke & Vernon Regehr on violins. I hadn't heard of composer
Constance Cooper before this release or the Violin Octet Family, but
I have heard First Avenue (a mostly electronic improv trio) on a few
occasions, as well as on cd (OO Disc). Constance and Dominic have
collaborated on two former projects for duos and trios with Dominic
improvising to Constance's compositions. For 'coming from us',
they've added the talents of First Avenue and a string octet.
"Fanfare" and "Anti-Fanfare" open with mysterious swirling strings,
piano, oboe and electronics. This music is occasionally eerie, yet
highly focused, with an obvious thread holding it together. "Duo"
features Dominic improvising to a written part for violin and it is a
fragile and haunting piece. "Nightingales" was partially inspired by
the microtonality of bird calls and it has a dark and dreamy vibe,
slightly bent and unnerving. Next First Avenue improvise based on
the previous theme and turn the sounds inside-out, which really
provides a fascinating alien landscape. "Concerto for Soprano
Violin" concludes our journey with a small orchestra (trio actually)
of twisted plucked string fragments underneath some quirky violin
soloing. I dig this entire work since it rarely gets too dense, yet
remains engaging on a more subtle level of activity.

Seven NEW RELEASES FEATURING a DIVERSE CAST of GUITAR GREATS:
KEIJI HAINO - Hikari Yami Uchitokeaishi Kono Hibiki (PSF 8017) "First
album of solo guitar by Keiji Haino in quite some time, but very much
a departure from the mountain-levelling, continent-sundering,
weather-system huge electric guitar releases of years past. 'Hikari
yami...' is played just on acoustic, gut-strung guitar, entirely
forsaking the effects and extreme amplification characteristic of his
electric work. Over three lengthy improvised pieces, recorded in
clothes-rustling close-up, Haino explores the full dynamic range of
the instrument, working abyss deep into his eternal preoccupations of
duration, decay, sustain and resonance. Vast spectrums of reference,
from Bailey and Fahey to flamenco, oud music and bluegrass are
invoked in single notes and brief phrases, only to be dismissed with
confident authority. Another masterful piece of work from Haino, as
replete with mystery and the sadness of existence as ever. The title
roughly translates as 'Light darkness melting into one this
vibration'. Haino advises the listener to play as loud as possible
-- surely a first on an album of acoustic guitar." -- Alan Cummings.
Japanese CD for $20
DEREK BAILEY - Poetry and Playing (Paratactile 1116) Derek plays
guitar and reads from the poems of Steve Dalachinsky (downtown
wordsmith & scene-maker), Lyn Hajinian and Peter Riley. Duration 27
minutes. Utterly charming and certainly a novel idea.
UK CD for $17
GARY SMITH - FutureThoughtReveal (Paratactile 1115) This new trio
features groove based improvisations which result in the most
attractive yet exploratory guitar playing yet from the leader whose
collective CV includes work with Hugh Hopper, John Stevens, Masayoshi
Urabe, Shoji Hano and Bill Fay. Gary once played here at the old DMG
and remains one of the unsung heroes of experimental electric guitar;
you might recall his power/noise trio MASS?
UK CD for $17
KYOAKU NO INTENTION - Astral Projection (PSF 150) Featuring Munehiro
Narita on guitar and Shoji Hano on drums. "Back at the dawn of the
eighties, several years before the inception of High Rise, foot-down
speed-freakin' guitarist Munehiro Narita had another unit which he
called Kyoaku No Intention (Worst Intentions). Usually comprising
just himself on electric guitar and a drummer, they cranked out some
of the hardest hitting no-wave rock-improv of the time, analogous to
very little apart from perhaps a more Neu-shackled version of the
Doug Snyder/Bob Thompson 'Daily Dance' duo. Documentation was,
unfortunately, minimal. That was until a couple of years ago when,
with High Rise in one of their periods of dormancy, Narita decided to
revive the name for some solo and collaborative shows around Tokyo.
One of those gigs was with drummer Shoji Hano, and the combination of
his resonant power and free-jazz inflected propulsion with the
stinging, icicle-edge attack of Narita's guitar proved to be so
explosive that the duo has now become a regular unit. On their
second album for PSF, Narita and Hano are caught live in Tokyo a mere
three months ago. Hano is always inventive around the kit, but he
knows that crazed flail is just as valid in certain contexts as
textural subtlety. Narita too was never one for treating the guitar
as an ambient paintbrush, and his soloing here is as splattered and
nerve-shreddingly exciting as ever. This is a brutal, consistently
thrilling, cold fusion sound that makes little allowance for weak
constitutions. Oh yeah." -- Alan Cummings.
Japanese CD for $20
ADAM ROGERS - Allegory (Criss Cross 1242) Featuring Chris Potter on
tenor sax, Edward Simon on pianos, Adam Rogers on guitar &
compositions, Scott Colley on bass and Clarence Penn on drums. This
is ace jazz guitar hero Adam Rogers' second date as a leader and
considering it is only January, I predict this will be one of this
year's best jazz guitar gems! I remember Adam from a fine local
fusion quintet called Lost Tribe from nearly a decade whose personnel
included David Gilmore also on guitar, Dave Binney on alto sax and
Fima Ephron on bass, all of whom have gone on to other great
bands/sessions. The last time I caught Adam live he was subbing for
Ribot in Electric Masada last year for a gig or two. From Adam's
current quintet, we know both Chris Potter and Clarence Penn from
their work with Dave Douglas, as well as numerous other bands. Both
Scott Colley and Edward Simon also keep busy in a variety of bands,
from what I recall. "Confluence", which opens starts with a slow,
haunting theme but soon changes into an impossibly fast tempo with
short yet expressive and daredevil solos from the piano, guitar and
tenor sax, the rhythm team burning at a furious pace. The piece
reminds me of one those great songs from Miles' quintet circa '67
like on 'Miles Smiles'. "Phyrigia" does have a rather hypnotic klez
meets Trane sort of modal theme as Adam mentions and is filled with
suspense, Scott's bass solo and Adam's guitar solo are cerebral and
quietly mesmerizing, as in Chris' Trane-like tenor solo. What stands
out throughout this great cd is Adam's composing, all challenging
tunes which work on a few different levels at once. On "Was", there
is a lovely, hummable melody is at the center, yet the quintet moves
gracefully around it in a couple of waves. So far Adam has used his
exquisitely warm, round jazz guitar tone, but on "Genghis" he opts
for some Scofield-like grit to his tone, pushing Chris to also start
bending his sax notes as well. That funky electric piano fits just
right underneath as well. "Orpheus" is another deceptive gem with a
quaint theme which gets more dreamy as it evolves, yet contains some
unexpected difficult moments and yet another amazing (Pat
Martino-ish) solo. Word from our pal postman Steve is that Adam
Rogers often plays at the 55 Bar at 55 Christopher St., so we had
better get on down there and check out this magnificent modern jazz
quintet. A stunning cd on all counts!
CD for $15
LENNY BREAU - The Hallmark Sessions (Art of Life 1007) Unbelievable!
A previously unreleased and long lost studio session featuring
legendary and under-recorded jazz guitar hero Lenny Breau with (get
this!?!) Rick Danko on acoustic bass and Levon Helm on drums, some
five years before The Band! This treasure was recorded in Hallmark
Studios in Toronto in November of 1961. Lenny Breau was one the
greatest jazz guitarists ever, having invented a technique of tapping
on the fretboard that no-one as ever equaled. His long career was
plagued by problems and sadly he has only a few releases in print on
cd. This important session contains 19 tracks, 7 originals and many
jazz standards, traditional tunes and even delightful covers by
Sabicas, Luiz Bonfa and Merle Travis. The rhythm section play
extremely quiet and reverential throughout and Lenny does a number of
astonishing solo pieces as well. We had this on the other day and
one of my fusion-loving buddies was there, we were both completely
astonished by Lenny's playing! CD for $15
REN LUSSIER/GILLES GOBEIL - Le Contrat (Empreintes Digitales 0372)
'Le contrat' ('The contract') is a magnificent fresco inspired by
Goethe's Faust and its infinite cultural ramifications. A symbiosis
of one's ardour (Lussier) and the other's meticulousness (Gobeil).
Haven't actually heard this yet, but Rene Lussier is one of my
favorite guitarists and never does anything less than interesting, so
perhaps we will review this in the near future. - BLG

STPHANE ROY - Migrations CD (Empreintes Digitales 0373) Second
release by Montreal-based composer Stphane Roy, following 1996's
Kaleidos. A quest for happiness, a quest for meaning, the other and
his universe, migration is a strange trail with its share of hopes
and illusions. The three program pieces making up this album are
such stops that have marked my migration through the American
Midwest, three 'invitations to the voyage,' to the conquest of
parallel worlds, that allowed me to transcend the cultural
internation that came with five years spent abroad. This album
begins with the freshest work, 'Appartenances', which celebrates the
homecoming. It also provides an occasion to meditate on the position
of the immigrant, where the excitement produced by the change of
scenery is accompanied by the painful experience of the uprooting.
The second work, 'Trois petites histoires concrtes', was realized in
the course of my first year in St Louis (Missouri, USA). Its central
place in this triptych indicates a very different kind of migration:
it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the invention of musique
concrte through an evocation of its founding processes. In the case
of the third and last work, 'Masques et parades', the American
migration also provided an opportunity to dream of new stylistic
lands inspired by the circus, its nomad-like, its deeply moving and
iconoclastic poetry. - FE blurb
Canadian import CD for $14
PHIL KLINE - Zippo Songs/airs of war & lunacy (Canteloupe Music
21019) Featuring Theo Bleckmann on vocals, Todd Reynolds on violin,
Phil Kline on guitars & music and David Cossin on percussion.
Certainly, a strange yet appropriate concept is used here.
Bang-on-a-Can Composer Phil Kline takes some 25 short poems written
on Zippo lighters by American GI's during the Viet Nam war and puts
them to music. We also get three texts from Donald Rumsfeld's
Pentagon briefings and a cover of the Doors' classic "The End" which
was featured in the film 'Apocalypse Now' (a harrowing account of the
Viet Nam war, as well). The Rumsfeld section starts with "Briefing"
which consists of layers of eerie (radio?) samples, guitar drones,
shimmering string(s) and mystical percussion. As a big fan of Theo
Bleckmann's enchanting voice, Phil has chosen well and surrounded
Theo with subtle, hypnotic, minimal, repetition of el. guitar, violin
and vibes or other percussion. The music reminds me of Steve Reich's
"Different Trains" and feels like everything is in motion, all is in
flux. The 'Zippo Songs' are short pieces which deal with the
realities of war - "getting bummed, getting high, getting horny,
getting bored, dying and finding (or losing) god." The music is
often hypnotic and strangely soothing, unlike what the words are
describing. It usually works when one is trying to make sense of the
insanity of war, boiling things down to just snippets of reason
behind the chaos. Many of these short pieces end with the feeling of
dread as the guitar or violin start vibrating with selective
distortion before the fade to black. I was unsure about this at the
outset, but feel it does actually work in a rather twisted way. Who
would've thought?!? Who could imagine!?!

THREE MORE 1 SIDED RECORD ONLY LIMITED EDITION ALBUMS from TABLE OF
THE ELEMENTS:
LAURIE SPIEGEL - Harmonices Mundi [1 sided clear vinyl lp] (TOTE 61)
Since breaking away from downtown New York scene in the early 1980s,
a scene she had helped create, Spiegel has lived as one of New York's
most independent musicians, supporting herself by her software and
circulating her music privately. The track on this release --
previously unreleased in its entirety -- is one of her most
legendary: a realization of Kepler's 'Harmony of the Planets',
originally commissioned in 1975 by Dr. Carl Sagan for inclusion on
the Golden Record which accompanies the Voyager II spacecraft, and is
now far beyond the orbit of Pluto in the vastness of interstellar
space. -- FE press blurb
LP only release for $15
RAFAEL TORAL - Harmonic Series [1 sided clear vinyl lp] (TOTE 62)
Portuguese musician, sound engineer and visual artist Rafael Toral
focuses on the possibilities of ambient music, the electric guitar as
a sound generator and high-risk improvisation. He has performed
extensively throughout Europe and North America, and collaborated
with Sei Miguel, Phill Niblock, Rhys Chatham, John Zorn, Thurston
Moore, Dean Roberts, Christian Fennesz and Jim O'Rourke. His sound
installations are interactive and unpredictable, often utilizing
generative feedback systems, such as 'Toyzone' (a piece with modified
electronic toys, custom relay circuits and multiple sensors), the
mixed-media installation produced in collaboration with Paulo
Feliciano for Sonic Boom - the Art of Sound, at the Hayward Gallery
in London, 2000, or 'Echo Room', a piece for delayed feedback random
sound filtering, at the BIG Torino art Biennale in 2002. - FE blurb
LP only release for $15
ARNOLD DREYBLATT - Point Source/Lapse [1 sided clear vinyl lp] (TOTE
63) As one of the most engaging of the second generation of New York
minimal composers, Arnold Dreyblatt has developed a distinctive--And
delightfully accessible--approach to composition and performance.
Employing modified and invented instruments and a unique tuning
system, his music is a vigorously rhythmic and richly textured romp
through the natural overtone series. These two outstanding pieces for
just-intoned electric guitar, bass violin, cimbalom, percussion and
brass emphasize dynamics and sonorities, to stunning acoustical
effect. - FE press info blurb

THE MEN X PERIENCE [MENACE] With BILL LASWELL/VERNON REID/BOOTSY
COLLINS et al - La Mancha Negra: The Black Stain (P-Vine 5354; Japan)
Imagine our surprise when ordering current P-Vine releases directly
from Japan and discovering that they still had a handful of this CD
that drove Laswell collectors nuts trying to get even when it came
out. This is rapper/funkster Menace along with guests Laz [2 cuts] ,
Umar Bin Hassan [Last Poets], Vernon Reid, J Cool, Keziah Jones,
Donald Black, Adamhead, Elsa Cornish and special guests Bootsy, Bruce
Mack [Burnt Sugar] and Maceo Parker.

GILBERTO GIL - 1969 [aka Cerebro Electronico] (Universal 1030;
Japan) Japanese-only reissue of the third Gil album (also known as
both "Cerebro Electronico" or the self titled Gilberto Gil album),
originally issued by Brazilian Polydor in 1969. "Every bit as in the
zone as Gal's epochal '69 testament; musta been something in the
Bahian water that year! The Brazilian military dictatorship of the
time didn't know what the fuck to make of these records, but they
knew they were plenty subversive & placed Gilberto & Caetano Veloso
(don't sleep on his '69 White Album either, even though it's never
been as hard to find as these two) under house arrest before exiling
them for several years. Lanny, again, provides some of the most
psychedelic guitarwork the world has ever known & studio wiz Rogerio
Duprat outdoes himself on the almost-Dockstadteresque 'Objeto
Semi-Identificado'. There's even a Mutantes cover ('2001' or 'Dois
Mil e Uno') which out-freaks the original! Sample lyrics from
'Futurvel' (thanks, Babelfish!): 'Its body will be more shining/The
mind, more intelligent/Everything in superdimension/The mutant is
happyer/ Happy because/In the new mutation/ The happiness is made of
metal". This was Gil's third album, and second in the Tropiclist
style. While I've yet to hear a bad one from him, newcomers should
observe the best-before-'75 rule & seek out s/t '68 (aka "Frevo
Rasgado"; all the '68 Tropiclist records were sunnier & Sgt.
Pepperier than the '69 freekouts), the epochal Tropiclia ou Panis et
Circensis comp, and the more trad, but still excellent Expresso 2222
('72) & Refazenda ('75). The 'album-in-exile' immediately following
this one (s/t '71, Gravado em Londres) is still lost in the mists of
time, and is probably a corker (along w/the 'lost' Caetano double
album from '69, which was recalled & destroyed by the
dictatorship!)." -- Jason Witherspoon. This version supercedes the
prior Philips Japan CD version (PHCA 4227), and adds 5 bonus tracks
(alternate takes and demos from the same era, a total of 35 extra
minutes!)
CD for $24
RASCAL REPORTERS - Happy Accidents (ZNR 1010) An extraordinary
progressive duo featuring Steve Gore and Steve Kretzmer on guitars,
keyboards, bass, clarinet, percussion, drums and voices. Special
guests include Dave Newhouse (The Muffins) on saxes and flutes, Nick
Didkovsky (Doctor Nerve) on guitar, Dave Kerman and James Grigsby (U
Totem) on percussion, Guy Segers (Univers Zero) on bass and Steve
Feigenbaum (Random Radar utility outfielder) on guitar. The Rascal
Reporters have been making challenging music for more than a quarter
century and this is their 1988 masterpiece, originally on lp, but
released here with over 30 minutes of bonus material. The complexity
of the compositions and ideas here will thrill and astonish fans of
rehearsal intensive progressive rock.
CD only release for $12
RADIO PIECE III - Tesseract and Monuments (ZNR 3001) Long-lived
Connecticut trio of dual keyboardists and drums. Not sure if they
are still around, but they had been around for a long time by the
time that this release came out and really it shows. Mostly
instrumental Canterbury and Zappa influenced music. The track
"Gargantua" sounds more like Egg than anything else I've ever heard
(other than Egg!), so you know that I have a fondness for this one...

East Indie 031) Well, if we aren't all just flies in a wind tunnel on
Sunday, it's another gal-dang split cd from North East Indie and
Cerberus Shoal. Strap on the good ears and give her a ride. This
little (albeit dense) treat features those ex-Atman project-ers, The
Magic Carpathians, from Poland. The most collaborative yet, where we
find both bands swapping tracks and rearranging pieces and adding new
tracks while changing old ones and havin' just a regular good old
time, here in the land of our mutual imprisonment. Incorporating
similar influences as on the Ducks and Drakes split CD with Guapo,
Cerberus Shoal brings the flavor of Psychic TV and even Can into the
Ash-Ra Temple-esque atmosphere of The Magic Carpathians. CD release
for $10

Nothing Ever Was, Anyway: The Music of Annette Peacock [2 CD SET]
(ECM; US) Stunning interpretations of Ms. Peacock' tunes by longtime
admirerer Crispell, many of which ["Blood", "Touching", "Cartoon",
"Albert's Love Theme" et al, were originally written for her
common-law husband Paul Bley's 60's repertoire - whom she met when
the teen bride of Gary, who was Ayler's basssist at the time, and has
been Bley's bassist on and off for over 40 years. Annette herself
sings on the title cut's closing version, capping an otherwise
instrumental odyssey through dark plains and slowly moving, yet
highly emotional terrain. Regularly $28 we have some copies for..
