LUCIANO MARGORANI - My Favorite Strings (Isinaz 1002/Italy) Featuring fourteen mostly guitar duets with Derek Bailey, Elliott Sharp, Henry Kaiser, Eugene Chadbourne, Nick Didkovsky, Davey Williams, Waedi Gysi, Mike Johnson (Thinking Plague), Roberto Zorzi, Franco Fabri [the known pickers] and [the lesser known] Angelo Avogadri, Giorgio Casadel, Roberto Zanisi and Frank Crijns. Luciano plays acoustic and electric guitars, samples, loops, zurna (double reed?) and assorted objects. What he has done is take 14 solo guitar or bass improvisations from each of the players involved, sent through the mail and then reconstruct pieces by adding or layering his own playing or processing. The pieces were recorded over four years (1999-2000), except for the Derek Bailey improv that came from 1991. Luciano does a fabulous job of framing or placing each solo within a structure of some sort by adding a bass line, rhythm sample and/or snippets/solo of other guitar parts. In many ways this sounds like a great solo effort, since the pieces are so focused and seamlessly connected, but never too busy or dense. A number of these guitarists, including Luciano himself, sound influenced by Fred Frith, so Fred's older sustain tone hovers like a great smiling ghost above the rest of the collection. Speaking of Fred Frith, Luciano covers an incredibly rare Henry Cow (Fred's old band) song called "Would You Prefer Us to Lie?", which was never officially released by the band, as a bonus track and it is done with taste and care. A few of these tracks feature some melting, warped guitars, but never go on for too long after they've established a thoughtful mood or setting. Very well done throughout and certainly a must for all experimental guitar fan-addicts. Check out the review in the Wire, if you require further proof.

SOFT MACHINE - Somewhere in Soho [2 CD set] (Voiceprint 262; UK) The recordings on this album stem from a residency at the world famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in 1970 [and should not be confused with the 'Ronnie Scotts' recording which has been circulating amongst tape traders for a number of years, it is an earlier and better - although not ECM - recording] and feature the generally accepted classic line up of Soft Machine which at the time, after the recording of Third, featured Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt. The band also featured Elton Dean on alto sax & saxello, he was a survivor from an earlier line up of the band, which featured a brass section. This album recorded between the 20th and 25th of April 1970 will be a welcome addition to this legendary bands catalogue and will give long time fans the opportunity to really hear this exciting and near legendary performance from Soft Machine at a time when they were really pushing the boundaries of music. The double CD has been re-mastered for this release to present the best possible sound quality and also contains sleeve notes written by Brian Hopper.

ROVA [SAX QUARTET] - the Works {volume 3} (Black Saint 120196) Although this challenging gem was released in 1999, distribution problems have rendered it hard-to-find until this year. Rova are one of the first and finest of all sax quartets and remain committed to presenting provocative modern music not bound by categories like jazz or classical. They've commissioned works from a diverse group of modern composers like John Zorn, Fred Frith, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy and Butch Morris, as well as composing much of their own original music. 'The Works' series continues their tradition of commissioning great composers and on 'Volume 3' we find pieces by Robin Holcomb, Muhal Richard Abrams and Rova's own Steve Adams. Ms. Holcomb is a former downtown (now in Seattle) composer, pianist and vocalist, whose music draws from jazz, roots/folk/rock, Americana and modern classical. Her piece here is called "Laredo" and it is quite a warm, haunting and luscious work. Parts of it have the playfulness of Zappa, as well as the majestic spirit of some of the more laid back progressive outfits. It is slow moving and often calm, giving those low end saxes some rich, deep and tasty harmonies to bathe us in. Muhal Richard Abrams is the founding father of the AACM, one of the most influential of all modern music schools/philosophies, which emerged from Chicago in the mid-sixties. Muhal is also a master pianist and an incredible and highly diverse composer. His piece here is titled "Quartet #1" and it is a fascinating work. The four saxes play layers of spiraling lines together in the first part, then play some rich harmonies with a nice rhythmic counterpoint. When the bari sax solos, the other saxists play intriguing charted lines around the soloist. There is great section that features some wonderful swinging saxes with a fine tenor solo riding on top and a few quirky solo sax snippets. Steve Adams plays alto & sopranino saxes and is the newest member of Rova, joining in 1988. Steve's piece is called "The Gene Pool" and involves various layers of lines, thorny harmonies and intricately charted parts, which are woven in a well planned tapestry. In one section three saxes play that jumping jive jazz line while the last sax navigates his solo on top, reminding me of the World Sax Quartet, who also have been around for over a quarter century. Each section features a different melodic and rhythmic scheme, yet it all flows together in a tight and logical way. As Rova continues to challenge us and themselves with each release, we can hardly wait for 'Works Volume 4'.

CHRIS KELSEY QUARTET - Renewal (CIMP #309) Featuring Chris Kelsey on soprano sax & compositions, Steve Swell on trombone, Francois Grillot on bass and Jay Rosen on drums. This is Chris' second date as a leader for CIMP, although he has also been on other CIMP dates with Steve Swell and Lou Grassi. Both local greats, Steve Swell and Jay Rosen are on dozens of dates for CIMP and Cadence, while this is only Francois' third. I recognize Chris' name more as a reviewer for different jazz zines, on-line and otherwise, than as a player. 'Renewal' features five relatively long pieces, all but one over 12 minutes. Chris, who has also played alto and tenor sax in the past, now concentrates on soprano and this is a wise choice, since he sounds great on that difficult instrument. "A Romp in the Dark", begins with some cautious contrabass and builds beautifully as the rhythm team begins spinning underneath and the soprano and trombone sail intensely together, higher and higher, power stretching out for all four members. "Charlie Parker's Last Will and Testament" opens with a simmering soprano sax solo with bass humming underneath as the Jay's expressive mallets and cymbals, also begin burning and soon erupting. Chris wails intensely on his soprano, as the trio takes off for the stratosphere, his solo long and rambunctious and pretty phenomenal. "Reason Excluded" dips into the past and has a fine, bluesy groove with some feisty blowing from my man Steve Swell. "Enough/No Tell" is one of those great start and stop pieces, which takes some concentration to truly pull off, then a great, tight, soprano and 'bone duet section. "E and Me" is another tight, furiously paced and intricate piece, which moves through a number of hairpin turns and sections. Francois and Jay are especially intense and on fire here, pushing Steve to do another one of those explosive trombone solos, with Chris also getting into that frenetic action. Whoa, hot stuff!

KALAPARUSH MAURICE McINTYRE & THE LIGHT MEET ADAM LANE - Paths to Glory (CIMP #306) Featuring Kalaparush on tenor sax, Jesse Dulman on tubs, Adam Lane on bass and Ravish Momin on drums. After a more than a decade out the limelight and often seen only playing in the NYC subways, AACM sax legend, Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre put together a new version of The Light, the same group name he used for his group in the sixties/early seventies. This is the fourth fine effort for his evolving trio with two fine local players - Jesse Dulman on tuba and Ravish Momin on drums, with special guest double bassist, Adam Lane, one of the best bassists and composers to move to NY in recent memory. Adam's all-star quartet date for CIMP with John Tchicai, Paul Smoker & Barry Altschul (all twice his age), remains one of CIMP's best. On 'Paths to Glory', The Light has indeed grown even better with Adam's superb bass adding much to this already solid trio. There are two duo pieces here for tenor sax and acoustic bass and both are quite lovely. The quartet pieces are especially inspired due to the inventive and intense drumming of Ravish, the awesome bass prowess by Adam, the consistently strong soloing from Jesse' s tuba and by far, the best tenor sax wailing we've heard from Kalaparush in many years. The nearly 19 minute epic, "Suite for My Mother" is another inspired work which moves through different sections and remains fascinating throughout.

JAMES FINN TRIO - Faith in a Seed (CIMP #308) Featuring James on tenor sax & compositions, Dominic Duval on contrabass and Warren Smith on drums. There has been a buzz about local tenor saxist , James Finn, for the past year or so, from different folks in the know about him being another little known sax legend. At 45 years of age, this is only his second offering for those fine folks up north at the Cadence estate. Both rhythm team members been around the block, Dominic we know from his strong work with Cecil Taylor, Joe McPhee and Mark Whitecage, some forty CDs on CIMP alone. Warren Smith has been one of busiest and best drummers we have and whose career stretches back to the sixties, playing many styles of music, from jazz to rock to folk to modern classical. James does indeed have a strong, dark and powerful tone on his trusty tenor sax, the opening piece is the title tune and right away we are plunged into the turbulent waters of that later Trane frenzy and squealing. The trio is one strong force, moving and wailing together righteously in waves. This a solid free-jazz sax trio date with a truly organic vibe at the center, everyone listening closely and building towards some great conclusions. They begin quietly on "Willing Through Darkness", with a somber, slow burning force, taking their time to grow together before they finally erupt. This fabulous trio has played at the Sunday Free-Style Series at CB's Lounge and reports they are and were pretty mind-blowing. The proof is definitely in the pudding and this is one truly fine delicacy.

THURSTON MOORE - Kapotte Muziek By... (Korm Plastics 3015) In April 2002, Kapotte Muziek returned to the USA for their second tour (the first one was in 1993), this as a trio of Frans de Waard, Roel Meelkop and Peter Duimelinks. On stop was at the rural city of Easthampton and the audience that night was rather small, but among them were Scott Faust, Gregory Whitehead and Thurston Moore. That particular concert showed Kapotte Muziek in probably their most fluxus-like element: the process of making music was made audible. The amplification of the opening of the bags, searching out objects to play and from there built the concert was a new, and as of yet, unrepeated, idea. For the 12th part in our series of Kapotte Muziek by... we asked Thurston Moore to expand on this idea and in a totally free setting of piano, guitar and small objects, he recreates the concerts by removing the concert and replacing it by his own playing, where the original recording serves as a score. Thurston Moore is a well-known improviser, having played with Nels Cline, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Tom Surgal and William Hooker.

STEFANO MALTESE OPEN MUSIC ORCHESTRA - Hanging in the Sky (Splasch 139) Featuring Stefano, Carlo Actis Dato & Eugenio Colombo on woodwinds; Pino Minafra on trumpets; Luca Bonvini & Sebi Tramontana on trombones; Martin Joseph on piano, Enrico Fazio on bass, Antonio Moncada on drums and Gioconda Clio on vocals. This is the fourth fine date that Italian sax great Stefano Maltese has done for the Splasch label, but the first with his new tentet. This is a reissue from a rare album which was in 1987, with one track added which was recorded live in March of 1999. "Open Windows" seems to jump between charted and free sections, you never know what will come next, yet at only two minutes, it sounds completely focused. "Dans Le Ciels" is filled with suspense and space, powerful trombones growl as an eerie flute and percussion create a hypnotic dream-world, as other horns hum, drone and float in the distance. Their vocalist, Ms. Clio, sings on four tracks and does indeed have an odd, yet intriguing voice, at times reminding me of Patty Waters or even Lady Day. Stefano's composing is unique and filled with unexpected influences and changes in direction. He is just one of the half dozen excellent soloists here, whether on alto sax, soprano or bass clarinet. I dig the way certain pieces balance between older and newer jazz traditions, the arrangements on "Something in the Air" show an older, ballad-like sound with rich and haunting harmonies for the horns to hum along to. On "Miroir Oblique", the horns, piano and bowed bass go further out together, yet still rest on a cushion of distant harmonious sounds, with Pino Minafra taking an amazing, twisted trumpet solo. Carlo Actis Dato gets to take things completely out on "Elephants Waltz" with one of heaviest bari sax solos ever, as Eugenio Colombo brings it back inside with an equally outstanding alto sax solo. Another surprise is that although this ensemble did a Mingus tribute in 1999, Stefano decided to instead cover of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" as the closing piece here. It is indeed a heartfelt and touching rendition, lush, warm and true to the original luxurious Ellington sound, with tasty solos from Lauro Rossi and Sebi Tramontana on trombones, Stefano on alto sax and Umberto Petrin on piano. Quite an extraordinary program form some of Italy's finest jazz ensembles.

TOHO SARA - Hourouurin (Fractal 025) The Japanese underground band Johari was create in 1990 by the magic duo Asahito Nanjo (High Rise) and Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple) and will became later, in 1995, this shamanistic avant-garde formation Toho Sara. Hourouurin is their third opus, after two albums on PSF Eastern most (1995) and Mei Jou Tan Sho (1999) and some live performances in Europe during the years 1996 and 1997. Hourouurin is a weird unit who attempt to achieve a mystic fusion of ethnic music and rock, according to their own unique methodology. They create a strange musical aura where the vibrations of folk instruments from around the world and electronics merge weirdly. These bizarre recordings embrace musical shamanism on the one hand, and a subversion of western musical concepts into the abyss of rock on the other. Toho Sara is here at their most mystic side. Acid music.

ASAHITO NANJO GROUP MUSICA - Comtemporary Kagura-Metaphysics (Fractal 027) A work of contemporary music performed in the rock idiom by Japanese underground rock legend, Asahito Nanjo. Nanjo is active in a wide variety of rock groups, but Group Musica exits in order to pursue a more universal musical vibration. Group Musica is an ensemble that pursues the free use of every type of Western and Eastern musical instrument, is propelled by the vibrations of very subtle rhythms, and that has internalized the methodology of minimalism. The concept behind this album is transform Kagura, an ancient form of Japanese music and dance that was performed for the gods, and is to convert the ideas of 'Secret teachings' and ancient Chinese methods of divination (the I-Ching) into a metaphysics of musical vibrations. The concept of Kagura allows Group Musica to create a unique work that is an experimental symphonic composition, which nonetheless has many rich improvisatory elements. In this unique work, the symbolic/philosophical nature of ancient esotericism is incorporated as improvisation, while the I-Ching is related to avant-garde symphonics. These are then fused into a total concept. Many different musicians from various genres participate in Group Musica, but their contributions are filtered through Nanjo's musical sense and thus altered, fused and structured. It is for this reason that remain anonymous -- Group Musica exists as a total entity. Recorded in 1993 & 1994, this album is a colossal long studio works which has necessitated more than 400 overdubbings. An extraordinary adventure in sounds and the most astonishing musical project by High Rise's leader.

ILITCH - Hors Temps/Out of Time (Fractal 024) Thierry Muller -- Ilitch's head -- is the multi-instrumentalist dark experimental French composer who started his musical career with the band Arcane as an underground electronics improvisations outfit around the years 1974. Albums Periodkmintrouble 1978 & 10 suicides 1980 were Ilitch first two works followed by the Ruth pop synth project Polaroid roman photo in 1985. All three are now reissued on CD with many unreleased bonus material by Fractal Records. Well received by many critics today, Ilitch took a solid place in the French underground scene from that area and was a serious source of influence on several groups/artists such as The Legendary Pink Dots for instance. After 24 years, the third and brand new Ilitch album is now released, titled ironically Hors Temps / Out of time and was composed during the last five years. More than a gap, it's a generation of sounds in between... and Thierry Muller is at the rendezvous: a full album in 9 electropopsonics excursions through the time with a pleiade of colored sounds (vocals, guitar, vocals, drums, percussions, farfisa, rhythmic programs, treated piano etc.). From the mellow pop to the angry waves, Hors Temps / Out of time is a blink at the early hours and a poetic reflexion and vision on life. With the participation of the great musician poet Philippe Doray. Subtle pop power for adult entertainment. Rendezvous hors temps.

BRAND NEW DELIGHTS FROM THE EVER-GROWING LEO CATALOQUE OF WONDERS:
DR. CHADBOURNE - Honky-Tonk Im Nachtlokal: The History Of The Chadbournes (Leo 406) Featuring Dr. (Eugene) Chadbourne on guitar, banjo & vocals with Olivier Bernet & Victor Marco on guitars, Cedric Prive on violin, Barry Midderhoff on mandolin, Chris Cornetto on keys & trumpet, Roy Paci on trumpet & jaw-harp, Walter Daniels on harmonica, Bob Jordan on toys, etc., Chuck Rosina on electronics & effects and Jerome Renault & Billy Kettle on drums. This is a collection of four different versions of the Chadbournes, recorded in different locations (Pau & Paris in France, London & at Roulette in NYC) from 1996 to 2002. The original name of Shockabilly was the Chadbournes, but that was more than 20 years ago. Eugene has decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Chadbournes name with this disc. All fourteen songs on this collection are covers of traditional & country tunes, a jazz standard, a classical intro and Rahsaan medley. I gotta admit that I am not familiar with any other musicians on this CD, except for mandolin great Barry Mitterhoff & Bob Jordan, not that it matters much, since Eugene has selected the better moments from each gig presented here. Highlights include great and often hilarious versions of "Up Against the Wall, You Redneck Mother", "I've Thought of Leaving, Too", a goofy Cajun medley and that swell Roland Kirk medley. For those of you who dig the more song-oriented side of Dr. Chadbourne, this one is definitely for you.

THE FONDA / STEVENS GROUP - Twelve Improvisations (Leo 394) Featuring Herb Robertson on trumpets, Daunik Lazro on alto & baritone saxes, Michael Jefry Stevens on piano, Joe Fonda on bass and Harvey Sorgen on drums. This is the fourth Fonda/Stevens disc on Leo, besides the other half dozen discs which include one or two of the same folks, so you know Leo Feygin does really love these dudes. Both Leo and myself are great fans of the collective of great musicians. The current version of the band includes trumpet ace Herb Robertson and on this release special guest French saxist Daunik Lazro. Right from the very first note, the sparks are flying, yet there is cautious undercurrent as the quintet quietly weave fragments together. Although this music is completely improvised, there is consistent dialogue, duos turn into trios as constant connections are made. I caught Mr. Lazro on a couple of occasions at Victo and am always impressed by his thoughtful playing, once with Michel Doneda and earlier this year playing solo baritone. All members of the quintet get their chance to shine on different pieces, as they unfold. You can tell that these guys have been at it for a long while, since the communication sounds telepathic at times, when they all come together, anticipating each other. The ever amazing Herb Robertson sounds extraordinary throughout, balancing his trumpet talents, with mutes and other distinctive sounds, this is a perfect group for him. Superb!

SHOUP / MAKIHARA / ARNOLD - Confluxus (Leo 399) Featuring Wally Shoup on alto sax, Brent Arnold on cello and Toshi Makihara on drums. Over the past decade, a number of lesser-known, high intensity, free-jazz, sax heroes are finally getting some recognition, though numerous recordings and gigs. This growing list includes Elliott Levin, Paul Flaherty, Oluyemi Thomas, Marco Eneidi, James Finn and Wally Shoup. None of these sax players are youngsters, yet each is a force to be reckoned with. Wally Shoup lives in Seattle and can be heard on some great discs with Thurston Moore, a quartet with Paul Flaherty, as well as his own trio. Toshi Makihara is a crazed drummer from Philly, who has worked with Chadbourne in the past. I am unfamiliar with cellist Brent Arnold, but he has worked with Shoup since the mid-nineties. 'Confluxus' is a live radio broadcast from Sonarchy Radio in Seattle and it bristles with intense energy and stormy spirits. These completely improvised pieces unfold organically and evolve through some more somber sections. Eventually the trio explodes with some high flying and over-the-top insanity. There is a recent Marco Eneidi Trio cd with the same instrumentation as this, with Kash Killion on some powerful cello. Brent Arnold does a similar job of provoking a great deal of sounds from his cello, not just bowing, but plucking intensely as well. There are moments when the sax and cello are playing similar sounds, so it hard to tell who is doing what. Altogether, an extremely tasty morsel of focused improv at its best. Wally Shoup will be playing here at DMG on September 19th with bassist Reuben Radding, certainly a treat for all of here.

ADLER / CHAUNCY / LLOYD / PALMER / WACHSMANN - Apparitions (Leo 408) Featuring Stan Adler on cello & electronics, Paul Chauncy on electronics, Jon Lloyd on soprano sax, Rob Palmer on guitar & electronics and Philipp Wachsmann on violin & electronics. I am only familiar with two members of this British quintet - Jon Lloyd, who has two CDs on Hat and Phil Wachsmann, who is on a number of CDs on Emanem, FMR, Maya & ECM as well as being a member of Evan Parker's Electro-Acoustic Ensemble. Since everyone here but Lloyd plays electronics as well as another instrument, we do get quite a bit of mysterious electronic sounds mixed in with the strings, guitar and sax. This music is often sparse and well placed on the sea of silence and suspense, with few solos. Jon Lloyd's serpent-like soprano occasionally spirals on a cloud of strange dreams. Eventually the electronic sounds and string pluckings get more dense and scary, the volume and drama also starts to increase as sound fragments leap out of the mix. In some ways this is not much different than Evan Parker's Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, perhaps not as amazing, but still engaging enough.

We advertised two items on the 'pfMentum' label last week [the Jeff Kaiser and the Steuart Liebig] for $14 each. Our price on that label has dropped to $12 for ALL their single CDs, like on this next item...
RICH WEST - Bedouin Hornbook (pfMENTUM 016) Featuring Chris Heenan on bass clarinet & alto sax, Bruce Freedman on trumpet, Jeremy Drake on electric guitar, Scot Ray on tuba and Rich West on drums and compositions. LA seems to be filled with a large scene of lesser-known musicians who consistently make interesting music, whether anyone notices or not. After John Carter and Bobby Bradford (who is still around, teaching and playing), the next generation of LA's finest includes the Cline brothers (Nels & Alex) and Vinny Golia (originally from the Bronx). Thanks to great labels like Nine Winds, Cryptogramophone and now, pfMENTUM, another community of strong players is emerging. Trumpeter Jeff Kaiser's new label has recently released six CDs and all are intriguing in their own way. I don't know much about the members of Rich West's quintet, other than recognizing their names from a few discs on 9 Winds or Crypto, but I do remember a fine disc from tuba player Scot Ray from last year. 'Bedouin Hornbook' is an impressive offering from this adventurous quintet. "Bugge" opens with some mysterious, growling dijeradoo-like sounds and other eerie sonics. With no bass, the tuba often plays the bass lines with the drums while the guitar, sax and trumpet play those intricate charted sections. Rich's writing is quite diverse, each piece a different challenge for the quintet. On "Twang", the guitar plays these tight patterns while the horns play the quirky melody. What's odd about this music is that there is little jazz influence (swinging) going on here. On "Twang", the tuba sets the pace and structure and takes the first strange solo, the guitar, trumpet and sax play the strange circus-like parts throughout the piece, with a few warped guitar licks inserted here and there. A number of these pieces are broken into connected sections, where two or three instruments will play their parts together as another player solos or as the rhythm team plays an interconnected part. While I find most of this music interesting, some of the jerky rhythms make it difficult to snap my fingers to. It will take some time to penetrate this odd, yet unique concoction.

REISSUES, RESTOCKS, HISTORIC RECORDINGS:
FUTURISM AND DADA REVIEWED [V.A.] - 1912-1959 (LTM 2301; EEC) CD release of this unique collection of original sound recordings made by key figures from both 20th Century avant garde art movements. Three years in the making, and with over one hour of playing time, the CD features sound collages, tone poems, interviews and music made between 1912 and 1959 by luminaries such as: F.T. Marinetti The poet and guiding light of Futurism in declamatory mode, circa 1931. Antonio Russolo & Luigi Russolo represented by the only surviving original recordings made with the celebrated 'intonarumori' (noise machines) in 1924. Marcel Duchamp: A much discussed but rarely heard example of Duchamp's musical non-theory, its ambient tones still sounding timeless. Kurt Schwitters: A very rare reading of the famed 'Die Sonata in Urlauten' from 1932. Tristan Tzara: The hugely influential poet of both Dada and Surrealism, whose abstract techniques went on to influence later writers such as William S. Burroughs. Wyndham Lewis: A rare 1940 reading by a leading light of the British futurist offshoot, Vorticism. Guillaume Apollinaire & Jean Cocteau: Not members of either movement, yet major influences on both, with Cocteau's contribution from 1929 a fascinating curiosity from the golden age of jazz. The collection also includes material by Marcel Janco, Luigi Grandi and Richard Huelsenbeck. 'Futurism & Dada Reviewed' is a must-have artifact for anyone interested in actually hearing the work of these pioneers, as was originally intended. Retailers may wish to catalogue this item as a 'book' as well as a spoken word CD. Praise for LTMCD 2301: "The most enthralling LTM project to date, should lie in every record collection bar none. Some more of this right now!" (Melody Maker, 12/88)

MUSICA FUTURISTA [V.A.] - The Art Of Noises (LTM 2401; EEC) Musica Futurista: The Art of Noises is a 74 minute collection of music and spoken word from the Italian Futurist movement 1909-1935, including original recordings by Marinetti, Russolo and Balilla Pratella. As well as vintage 'free verse' readings by Futurist figurehead F.T. Marinetti, the CD includes recordings of the celebrated intonarumori (noise intoners) created by Luigi Russolo, including the compostition The Awakening of a City. Russolo's public performances scandalized Europe in 1914 yet still resonate today. Although his extraordinary ideas met with fierce resistance, it is now clear he exerted a powerful influence on a number of leading avant-garde and experimental composers, initially Igor Stravinsky, George Antheil and Arthur Honegger, and later John Cage, Edgar Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Harry Partch, as well as non-classical electronica and avant-rock. As well as period recordings, the CD includes contemporary performances of other key Futurist works by Balilla Pratella, Antonio Russolo, Aldo Giuntini, Luigi Grandi, Silvio Mix, Franco Casavola, Alfredo Casella, Matty Malneck and Frank Signorelli. All material on this definitive collection has been digitally remastered. The deluxe booklet features many rare images, as well as detailed historical notes by noted author James Hayward. Consider this a companion volume to LTM's Futurism & Dada Reviewed (LTMCD 2301) and Surrealism Reviewed (LTMCD 2343).

KURT SCHWITTERS performed by JAAP BLONK - Ursonate CD (Basta 9145) In 1979, Jaap Blonk first heard 'Ursonate' as read by Dutch actor Hans Hausdorfer. Over the following years he took to learning the piece by heart, bit by bit, in such a way that each segment acquired an individual meaning for him. For a long time, the Schwitters estate did not give permission to issue recordings of his works. Only in 2002 the ban was lifted and the performing and publishing rights were turned over to a foundation based in the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, the Kurt und Ernst Schwitters Stiftung. This meant that, finally, Blonk's 1986 studio recording could be made available to the public. On the present CD, Blonk decided to add a recent recording of the sonata. For reasons of contrast he chose a live recording from 2003, made in a richly reverberant space. It is complete and unedited, spiced with the inevitable odd slip of the tongue that helps keeping a live performance alive.

RAYMOND SCOTT & THE SECRET SEVEN - The Unexpected (Basta 9106) In 1959, Raymond Scott assembled an anonymous all-star band and dubbed them The Secret Seven. With this group of top jazz players, he recorded the album 'The Unexpected'. For nearly 45 years the identity of the Secret Seven line-up has remained a mystery, but as Nat Hentoff wrote in the liner notes, 'Jazz listeners should recognize the identity of the performers.' This is another CD in Basta's Essential Reissue series, complete with the original liner notes & original cover artwork.

LES MCCANN - Invitation To Openness (Water 138) Featuring the 26-minute 'The Lovers', this album is THE essence and translation of the predominant free love theme of the '60s and '70s. Every nuance of McCann's stream of consciousness comes through loud and clear, as do the excellent solos by Yusef Lateef on a wide array of reeds, flutes, and percussion. David Spinozza's electric guitar chops and Alphonse Mouzon's drum and percussion feelings on McCann's completely improvised composition are an auditory delight for fusion fans. Two other compositions, 'Beaux J. Poo Boo' and 'Poo Pye McGoochie (And His Friends)' round out the set with by adding different sonorous characters and musical back stories.

THE FIRST OF OUR GERMAN-ONLY 'ECM' CD's FINALLY CAME IN THIS WEEK!!!
We know a lot of people have been waiting for these no-longer [or never, in the case of items like the Mantler 2-CD set] available in the US treasures of the classic '70/'80s catalog to be available from DMG. Luckily we were able to keep the price to $20 per disc. [we sell domestic ECMs for $16]
MICHAEL MANTLER/SAMUEL BECKETT/HAROLD PINTER With CARLA BLEY/DON CHERRY/ROBERT WYATT et al - No Answer/Silence [2 CD set] (ECM/Watt 2/5; Germany) 'No Answer [words by Samuel Beckett]' marks the recorded beginning of Michael Mantler's fascination with the texts of Samuel Beckett as well as a long association with former Cream vocalist/bassist Jack Bruce. Here, with the spare instrumentation of voice, electric bass, keyboards, and trumpet (the late, great Don Cherry in outstanding form), he sets words from How It Is to accompaniment that ranges in style from bleak and spacy to almost funky. Bruce, with his high, plaintive voice, does a superb job here, investing the cynical, bitter text (example: "and the mud yes the dark yes the mud and the dark are true yes nothing to regret there no") with conviction and the right inflection of sorrow. On a couple of pieces, his bass kicks in for a momentary groove that sounds as though it was recalled from the type of Cream session that produced "I'm So Glad," but Mantler doesn't allow such relief to continue for long, antithetical as it would be to the Beckettian world he's conjuring. The songs aren't structured as pop pieces, however; they owe more to contemporary art songs despite the instrumentation, making the affair challenging to the listener expecting a rockish album but relatively easy compared to his earlier work with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. The contributions by Cherry and Mantler's then-wife, Carla Bley, are crucial to the success of the album, each playing in a stark style that befits the matters at hand. No Answer is an unusually fine melding of theatrical text and music and one of Mantler's best efforts in this genre. Recommended! - Brian Olewnick, AMG
'Silence [words by Harold Pinter]': Robert Wyatt vocals, Kevin Coyne vocals, Carla Bley keyboards & vocals, Chris Spedding guitar, Ron McClure bass, Clare Maher cello. Amusingly enough, the following review and interview snippet are FEATURED on Mantler's own website: "..ideas once amusing (Gorey's 'Hapless Child') or emotionally absorbing ('No Answer', from Beckett's 'How It Is') are now thoroughly played out. With due respect to Messrs. Coyne and Wyatt, who attempt to salvage this very lame duck, 'Silence' is possibly the least listenable record I have ever heard. Indeed several members of the MM editorial staff have already volunteered to splinter the disc against the filing cabinets here, and I can only sympathize with their reaction. ... imbecilic sing-song treatment ... the musicianship here is uniformly dull ... noodling electric piano rhythms of very little consequence ... every rock guitar clichØ in the book ... uninteresting ... inferior ..." - MELODY MAKER Q: All your text-based compositions are difficult listening, yet only one has been universally loathed by almost everyone who has heard it. What went wrong with 'Silence'? MANTLER: It was mostly the English who started it, going on a rampage about somebody messing with Harold Pinter, they really took it very personally. In fact I would think that something like 'No Answer' would actually be a much tougher record to listen to, but 'Silence' was indeed an extremely well-hated record (...laughs ...)

BENGT BERGER With DON CHERRY et al - Bitter Funeral Beer (ECM 1179; Germany) Bengt Berger ko-gyil (Lo Birifor funeral xylophone), Don Cherry pocket trumpet, Jorgen Adolfsson violin and sopranino soprano and alto saxophones, Tord Bengtsson violin, electric guitar, Anita Livstrand voice, bells, axatse (rattle) . Recorded January 1981. The term "cultural imperialism" is often used, justly, when Western musicians appropriate aspects of third world music for their own, watering it down to listener-friendly levels and giving scant acknowledgement to its original creators. Whereas this sort of approach has been the unfortunate rule, from Paul Simon to David Byrne, every once in a while a glorious exception emerges. Such an exception is Swedish percussionist Bengt Berger's Bitter Funeral Beer band. Berger, who devoted lengthy periods of study to West African music, particularly that of Ghana, assembled a large contingent of fellow Swedes, trained them in various aspects of West African traditions and, most importantly, chose Ghanaian folk themes with utterly beautiful and irresistible melodic lines from which to improvise. Add the illustrious trumpeter (and like-minded world traveler) Don Cherry to the mix, and you have the makings of a stellar album. In fact, it's the bittersweet, off-center lines of Cherry's trumpet work that go a long way toward keeping the pieces pointed and sharp. The members of Berger's band all double on African percussion very effectively, with the leader concentrating on an African xylophone called the ko-gyil, which appears to utilize gourd resonators containing spider webs, producing an enticingly fuzzy rattle beneath the metallic, hammered tones. At its best, as on pieces like "Chetu" and "Tongsi," the combination of stunningly gorgeous repeating themes and inspired improvising make one wish the music would never stop. This recording, though little known, is one of the very finest items ever released by ECM. While wonderful in and of itself, it might also serve as a fine introduction to West African music, albeit via a circuitous route through Stockholm. - Brian Olewnick, AMG

Here the American saxophonist - and friends Abercrombie and Beirach - are flanked by no less than eight drummers and percussionists. To listen to "Drum Ode" is to swim in waves of rhythms, cross-rhythms, polyrhythms, to be carried along by tidal beats. At the time when he made "Drum Ode", Liebman was playing with the Miles Davis Group in its most electric/tribal groove period, and Miles's influence is clearly discernible here. A most amazing offering and perhaps Dave Liebman's best!

FROM THE VOICEPRINT FAMILY OF LABELS THESE REISSUES & RESTOCKS:
JOHN GREAVES/PETER BLEGVAD/LISA HERMAN - Kew Rhone (Voiceprint 200; UK) Cartoonist, surrealist and musician, Peter Blegvad is known for his radical and avant garde leanings with Slapp Happy and Henry Cow amongst others. This release with John Greaves (ex Henry Cow) and Lisa Herman, released in 1977, also includes Carla Bley on vocals and tenor sax, Michael Mantler on trumpet and trombone, Andrew Cyrille on drums, Michael Levine on violin and viola, Vito Rendace on alto/tenor saxes and flute. "An unfortunately neglected masterpiece of '70s progressive rock, the first extended collaboration by John Greaves and Peter Blegvad (formerly of Henry Cow and Slapp Happy, respectively) is a brilliant amalgam of Slapp Happy's skewed pop sense, the collective improvisation approach of Henry Cow, the sly wit of the Canterbury prog rock scene, and (most fruitfully) Carla Bley's inimitably skewed progressive jazz. Although Bley's contributions are purely instrumental and vocal (the album was written entirely by Greaves and Blegvad), songs like the rushing, choral "Twenty-Two Proverbs" sound heavily influenced by her early-'70s work with Paul Haines and Michael Mantler (who engineered this album; there is no producer credit). Most of the lead vocals are taken by Lisa Herman, whose lovely, clear voice delivers Blegvad's playful, often surreal lyrics (filled with anagrams, palindromes, and other verbal games) in a tone that suggests a deeper emotional core to songs that might otherwise have been merely clever. One of the most satisfying albums that any of the principals have been involved with, Kew. Rhone. is a challenging but surprisingly accessible album that rewards as much attention as the listener offers it." Stewart Mason, AMG This new 11 track edition of the CD also functions as a CD-ROM with newly created illustration work for Blegvad and musical contributions from Greaves and Herman

This is a tour-de-force album for Dagmar, displaying the full breadth and depth of her uniquely emotional and compelling voice!

SLAPP HAPPY - Sort Of (Blueprint 318; UK) The classic first album by this originator (along with Henry Cow) of the Rock-In-Opposition [RIO] movement. Here are The first appearances of Dagmar Krause, Peter Blegvad and Anthony Moore, backed by the powerfully creative musicianship of Faust: Gunther Wusthoff, Werner "Zappa" Diermaier, and Jean Herve Peron (Faust also backed them on the rejected-by-Virgin first recording of their 2nd album,, Casablanca Moon. The Faust version was released years later as Acnalbasac Noom - Virgin got it backwards!) An odd, classic Masterpiece!

PETER BLEGVAD - King Strut (Whatdisc 9; UK) Finally re-issued! When originally released in 1990 on Silvertone, King Strut was critically lauded as a masterful collection of articulate and insightful short stories set to music, or as Blegvad himself put it '...condensed narrative in rhymes...' Amongst the fantastic selection of musicians contributing are Andy Partridge (XTC), Peter Holsapple (REM), B.J. Cole (Verve), Syd Straw, Danny Thompson, Chris Stamey and Anton Fier. One of my favorite (literate) rocks records of all time!! - BLG

His first album as a leader, 'Flare Up' was released in 1970 and remains one of unrecognized classics of British modern jazz. This is quite an extraordinary treasure from an under-recognized wonder who went on to record just a handful of discs under his own name and still plays release great material today.

ROBERT WYATT - A Short Break [CDep] (Blueprint 108; UK) When Robert Wyatt followed up his welcome return of a CD (Dondestan) with this EP "only" two years later, some fans thought a new era of productivity had hit the reclusive singer. (Alas, it took until 1998 for a full-length follow-up to appear.) A Short Break is a musical scrapbook, a glimpse of half-thought ideas and hints of melody Ø atmospheres, not songs. Armed with a lone piano, a set of cymbals, some rudimentary percussion, an organ, and his plaintive voice, Wyatt's pieces are melancholy, sad, and contemplative. They are also, it must be added, not that interesting, and worth listening to only because the man is capable of so much more (it would not have even been released if it was anybody else). Only "Unmasked" could have made it onto Dondestan, and sounds like an outtake. More fascinating are the childhood photos and short essay by Wyatt that accompany the CD. Ø Ted Mills 21 minutes total

Orchestra, Caravan), Jimmy Hastings (Caravan) and John G. Perry (Caravan, Quantum Jump), Dave McRae (Matching Mole), Peter Giles(King Crimson/Giles, Giles and Fripp) and Ray Warleigh. Michael and Peter Giles with Robert Fripp formed Giles, Giles and Fripp, releasing The Cheerful Insanity Of? album in 1968. His only solo vocal record from that period, Still, is a woundrous jewel-textured musical odyssey deftly performed by musicians as varied as Keith Tippett, Greg Lake, Ian Wallace, Mel Collins, John Wetton, Robin Miller (all Crimsonites) as well as Keith Christmas, Tim Hinckley, Brian Cole and Richard Brunton.

FAMILY - Family Live (Mystic 176; UK) A rollicking kick-ass live album from early 1971(unlike the tired sounding live cuts on the US version of Anyway), with the line-up that would go on to record the studio albums Fearless and Bandstand: Roger Chapman, John "Charlie" Whitney, Poli Palmer, Rob Townsend, and John Wetton on bass(whose next gig would be '72-74 King Crimson). MORGAN FISHER/HYBRID KIDS - Hybrid Kids: Vol 1 A Collection Of Classic Mutants (Blueprint 262; UK) [Originally released under the "artist" name Hybrid Kids] It should come as no surprise whatsoever to learn that Hybrid Kids Volume 1 - A Collection of Classic Mutants is not in fact a galaxy of soon-to-be-legendary bands from Peabody, Texas (the more-than-hip version of Akron, Ohio), but instead a classic work ['77] of none other than experimental musician, neo glam pop star keyboardist in Mott The Hoople, guru devotee, and curator of arguably rock's wackiest and most original compilation album, Miniatures [Blueprint BP159CD], the thoroughly eccentric Morgan Fisher.

NEW ADDITIONS TO OUR '7 FOR THE PRICE OF 6' CD SALE ITEMS:
THIRD EAR BAND - Hymn To The Sphinx [2 CD set] (Mooncrest; UK) Although they were loosely affiliated with the British progressive rock scene of the late '60s and early '70s, Third Ear Band was in some ways more of an experimental ensemble performing contemporary compositional work. For one thing, they didn't use electric instruments, or even guitars, instead employing violin, viola, oboe, cello, and hand percussion. More important, they didn't play conventional rock "songs." They featured extended instrumental pieces that often built up from a drone, or hypnotic pattern, to a dense, raga-like crescendo, somewhat in the manner of some of Terry Riley's work. The group was founded by drummer Glen Sweeney [the one constant member to this day], who had roots in Britain's free jazz scene, and had played with an avant-garde ensemble, the Sun Trolley. Sweeney described Third Ear's music as "electric acid raga," although the electricity was shut off shortly after they formed, when their electronic equipment was stolen. Sweeney simply molded Third Ear into an acoustic ensemble, with the addition of oboe, violin/viola, and cello. The personnel (with the exception of Sweeney) would rotate over the next few years. Commercial success, or even widespread underground success, was never in the offing for Third Ear Band, and one gets the feeling that was not ever a consideration. Their albums were too somber and experimental for the rock audience, and in the U.S., they are still only known to a very few. Their biggest coup was getting commissioned to score and perform the soundtrack to Roman Polanski's film version of Macbeth (issued as their third album 'Music From Macbeth'). The original incarnation of Third Ear Band disbanded in the early '70s. Surprisingly, they re-formed in the late '80s, with new members Neil Black on electric violin and and sax stalwart Lyn Dobson [ex-Soft Machine] and released a few albums that boasted sounds and ambitions that were similar to those found in their early work. - Richie Unterberger, AMG
Disc 1 [studio work] contains all of the 1990 album 'Magic Music' with Sweeney, Dobson, Black and guitarist Mick Carter; and all of their classic 2nd album from 1970, the soundtrack to the album 'Abelard And Heloise' with Sweeney, oboist Paul Minns, violinist Richard Coff and cellist Ursula Smith.

SOFT MACHINE - Man In A Deaf Corner 1963-1970 [2 CD set] (Mooncrest 233; UK) Three years before the official formation of the Soft Machine, the band's prime movers gathered to cut the rare 1963 demos with [variously] Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Brian Hopper, some previously unreleased, that fill most of the first CD, alongside a taster from the 1967 line-up with Kevin Ayers and Daevid Allen. The second CD is given over to the acclaimed late '69-'70s trio version of the band in concert with tracks found on the famous Paradiso '69, Croydon '70 with Elton Dean, and the "Live in Europe" CD with Lynn Dobson recordings and as a bonus a more recent recording of the Wyatt/Hopper tune "As Long As He Lies Perfectly Still" performed by the quintet of Hugh Hopper, Dave Stewart, Jakko Jakszyk, Gary Barnacle and Clive Brooks. It all adds up to a primer in Britain's most influential jazz-rock experimentalists.

EMERSON LAKE & PALMER [KEITH EMERSON/GREG LAKE/CARL PALMER] ELP - Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends [2 CD set] (Castle; UK) Upon its release, the 1973 LP Brain Salad Surgery had been hailed as Emerson, Lake & Palmer's masterpiece. A long tour ensued that left the trio flushed and begging for time off. Before disbanding for three years, they put together a triple LP live set (something rather pretentious at the time). Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends gives a very accurate representation of ELP's shows at the time...The song selection is stellar and features all the material from Brain Salad Surgery (with the exception of "Benny the Bouncer"), including a complete 36-minute rendition of "Karn Evil 9" complete with the archetypal Carl Palmer drum solo, which filled both sides of the third LP in the original set. Add to that a 26-minute version of "Take a Pebble" that includes a solo spot for Greg Lake ("Still...You Turn Me On" and "Lucky Man"), and a 27-minute "Tarkus" and you now have three quarters of the music. The latter piece includes a surprise verse from King Crimson's "Epitaph." Hearing any of those three pieces (and the stunning "Toccata") performed live, obviously without any overdubs, makes one realize how accomplished these musicians were. - Francois Couture, AMG

Tracks include Cogs in Cogs, Proclamation, Funny Ways, The Runaway, Experience, Features from Octopus, Advent of Panurge, So Sincere. 50 minutes. 2. While touring the US in 1975, Giant recorded this TV special at the Terrace Theatre, Long Beach, California.1975 US TV concert from the Terrace Theater, Long Beach, California. Tracks include Experience, Features from Octopus, Advent of Panurge, Funny Ways. 30 minutes 3. Szene '74: a short bit of rare footage from the 1974 tour, filmed by German television station BRW. It's an excerpt from "In a Glass House" but you might not recognize it at first (I didn't): a blistering guitar jam based on some of the material from the second part ("Master inner voices..."). Sounds almost like heavy metal. 3 minutes 4. Baroque & Roll: black & white footage and interview from Italian television. 22 minutes. DVD bonus material includes photo gallery from Gary's private collection. 36 photos This special edition set also contains an extra bonus CD with the audio portion of the 1974 show in Brussels as aired on the German TV station ZDF
This is put out privately by GG's own label Alucard in a limited run, and is an import as well which goes partway to explaining the high price. However, it is rare material well presented!

AND A MANNYLUNCH "MUST OWN!" FOR CRIMSON HEADS...
KING CRIMSON - Neal And Jack And Me: The Noise, Live In Frejus/Three Of A Perfect Pair, Live In Japan [DVD] (DGM 0401; USA) Brand new DVD of King Crimson [Robert Fripp/Adrian Belew/Bill Bruford/Tony Levin] in the 1980's. Showcasing one of the defining live acts of the period. As Robert Fripp puts it "Records and live performance are two worlds. One is a love letter, the other a hot date. Crimson were always the band for a hot date." These two concerts [previously released on VHS] offer different and contrasting snapshots of the 80's Crimson. The Noised: Live in Frejus, August 27th 1982, featuring almost an hour of material from the Beat and Discipline albums and filmed on tour in Europe with Roxy Music; and Three of a Perfect Pair: Live In Japan 1984 showcasing the band's triumphant Japanese performances, an almost 2 hour performance in itself! [Unfortunately they still left off the instrumental "Discipline" from the Japanese Laserdisc edition]
DVD Extras include: Sleepless video - Tony's Road Photos - Discography [NTSC All Region]
"The Japan concert is 'fine and dandy', but I think of it as a great bonus. The real meat here is the Frejus show, an absolutely incredible performance with warts and all, and the best [and yet most unobtrusive] filming and editing and close-ups of any concert film ever! And to think the filming of this was an afterthought! The crew asked permission to roll on KC as they were already set up for the headliner Roxy Music [the 'High Road' video], and were granted it on the proviso that they keep out of the way. 20 THUMBS UP!!!" - Mannylunch

PINK FLOYD - Live at Pompeii (Director's Cut) [DVD] (Universal B0001315; USA) [clamshell (DVD) case edition] Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was shot in October 1971 in a vacant, 2,000-year-old amphitheater, a perfect live take performance - but with no audience! This disc contains a new, 90-minute director's cut as well as the original 60-minute concert film, so you can pick which version you want to watch! Adrian Maben's new cut goes to great lengths to lend the film a more contemporary feel, but it's the earlier version that makes this disc such a gem, being more focused on the music and more wholistic in vision. The performances are interweaved with fascinating interviews and music snippets filmed later (mostly during the recording of Dark Side of the Moon). "If you only own one or two concert films in your collection, this still has to be one of them - innumerable thumbs up!!!" Mannylunch

Sonny Simmons is an incredible and legendary alto saxist and English horn player, whose long and winding career stretches back over forty years from his west coast work with Prince Lasha in the early sixites to his explosive free/jazz spirits with trumpeter and then partner Barbara Donald in the mid-sixties (two amazing ESP albums) to an unfortunate period of living on the streets in the bay area during the eighties to his amazing comeback during the nineties, with some dozen or so great releases since then. His current quartet, The Cosmosamatics, with Mike Marcus, remains amongst the finest and most intense of all current avant/jazz ensembles. Limited edition of 100 DVD-R copies

SUN RA - Space Is The Place [DVD] (Plexifilm 010; USA) Directed by John Coney. Science fiction, blaxploitation, cosmic free-jazz and radical race politics combine when Sun Ra returns to earth in his music-powered space ship to battle for the future of the black race and offer an 'alter-destiny' to those who would join him. Intentionally created as an homage to the low-budget science fiction films of the 50's and 60's. Cosmic blaxploitation cum sociological critique, 'Space Is The Place' defies categorization. The original director's cut plus over 20 minutes of restored footage, never-before-seen home movies of the Arkestra in Egypt, deluxe booklet with informative liner notes by Sun Ra biographer John Szwed and a groovy introduction by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore . 82 minutes/color/16mm/1.78:1/NTSC format/region 1

SUN RA And His ARKESTRA/EDWARD O. BLAND - The Cry Of Jazz [DVD] (UMS/Atavistic DJ-865; USA) Finally in! Filmed in Chicago and finished in 1959, this is filmmaker/composer/arranger Edward O Bland's polemical essay on the politics of music and race, a forcast of what he called "the death of jazz." A landmark moment in black film, forseeing the civil unrest of subsequent decades, it also features the only known footage of visionary pianist Sun Ra from his beloved Chicago period. Ample images of tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and the rest of Ra's Arkestra in Windy City nightclubs, all shot in glorious black & white. Rarely seen in cinemas, this is the first commercial release of the Cry of Jazz, transferred from a pristine print and featuring an otherwise unreleased Arkestral soundtrack. Supposedly in 5.1 surround [says so on the case]; 35 glorious minutes!
