* Alto Sax Improvisation <1977 12.17 5th Set> (10:41) . Recorded
at Gaya, Hatsudai, Tokyo. It was September 9, 1978 when Kaoru Abe died
young at 29 years old. He is a rare and real avant-garde improviser
in the world, of course in Japan. These CDs in ten volumes contains
the precious live recording of his last one year's activity. The peak
of his art is at "Nashikuzushi No Shi", his solo work recorded in 1975.
It has a motif of Celine's novel with the same title. In this work,
the tones of alto-sax played by Abe and a phrase spun infinitely have
the freshness, beauty, and creativity that compared with A. Ayler and
impress the listeners deeply.

[LOUIE BELOGENIS/TONY MALABY/TREVOR DUNN/RYAN SAWYER] TWICE TOLD TALES - Twice Told Tales (DIW 944; Japan) Featuring Louie (Prima Materia/Rashied Ali Duo/Trio) on tenor & soprano saxes, the ever-gigging tenor sax great Tony Dunn who works with Tim Berne & Angelica Sanchez, Trevor Dunn (El. Masada & Fantomas) on acoustic bass and Ryan Sawyer on drums. Over the past few years, both local tenor sax heroes, Mr. Belogenis and Mr. Malaby, stay incredibly busy both leading various bands and collaborating with a variety different musicians. Trevor is also one the busiest bassists on both acoustic and electric, working with dozens of bands and projects, with Zorn often using him for recordings, live improv situations and the occasional Cobra sessions. Ryan Sawyer has become the drummer of choice for a number of local players, from Bruce Eisenbeil onwards. Although this is an improvised session, the pieces and clarity of the sound, are focused and strong. Both Louie and Tony have dark, haunting tones on tenor and sound marvelous together swirling their blusters and sparks. Commencing with "Long Ago", the quartet begins cautiously with spacious notes hanging in the air, as they take their time to ascend together, floating on clouds of suspense. The bowed bass and minimal percussion gradually build beneath as the two tenors and occasional soprano saxes drift like ghosts together in a hypnotic dream-state. None of these pieces are longer than 8 minutes, so that nothing goes on for too long, this keeps things engaging throughout. All saxes have rich and expressive near-vocal-like tones, as if they are speaking in tongues, directly to our hearts and souls. All four musicians remain well connected and shift organically through different densities as this gift from the gods unfolds. Another exquisite offering from four of downtown's best.

Bourelly (g, vo, subatomic gitar bass, effects), T.M. Stevens (b), Alfredo
Alias (ds, back vo), Kvin "K-Dog" Johnson (ds), Irene Datcher (back
vo). Recorded at Greene Street Recording, NYC in June and September,
1994. Jimi Hendrix is the evergreen greatest guitarist. His influence
is also great still now, and the story of his sound and spirits will
be handed down eternally from generation to generation, sometimes in
such appearance. This is such story-telling album. It is no exaggeration
to say that driving sound like "Band Of Gypsies" and tricky guitar sound
skipping around bring what Jimi tried to play to life. Jimi treated
the electric guitar not as a loud instrument but as an expressive part
of his own body. Jean-Paul Bourelly succeeds to such spirits admirably,
and at the same time his own root are obvious.

become a significant composer as well as soloist as he shows here leading
a band of New York and Boston all-stars in a program of his own music.

with lyrics by Jeanie's mother, Connie Bryson.

TOSHINORI KONDO/PAUL LOVENS/PAUL LYTTON - Death is Our Eternal Friend (DIW 455; Japan) This rare live trio date was released on lp only in 1982 and recorded during the "Kiraku-ni Free Improvisation" tour of Japan. Three free/music giants from different lands who share a passion for daredevil improv. Kondo plays trumpet & mutes, comes from Japan but spent time in NY in the early 80's and then lived in Amsterdam for a bit. Paul Lovens plays drums and percussion, lives in Austria and ran the great Po-Torch vinyl-only label and has played with Cecil Taylor and Eugene Chadbourne. Paul Lytton is British and plays percussion and live electronics and has played with the Evan Parker Trio and London Jazz Composers Orchestra for too many years. There are two 23 plus minute pieces here, each recorded at a different gig. Well recorded and filled with much exciting, free-wheeling and highly focused playing. Kondo is often an explosive, rambunctious player and both drummers/percussionists consistently soar with him, as well creating fascinating textures with manipulated cymbals, drums, objects and home-made electronics. The action and energy flows with ever resourceful and creative spirits, there is never a dull moment to be found. Kondo has an especially infectious charm, with his almost child-like approach and silly antics and goofy sounds. I recall him wearing a dunce cap the first time I caught with Frith and Kaiser and then using it as a too-long mute. What a creative clown!

TOSHINORI KONDO - Nerve Tripper (DIW 453; Japan) Japanese madman trumpet hero, Kondo has had a long and varied career, since first playing with early members of the downtown scene in the late seventies like Fred Frith, Eugene Chadbourne & Henry Kaiser, through Bill Laswell produced recordings in the eighties to the Die Like a Dog Qt. (w/ Peter Brotzmann) and Charged (w/ Laswell & Bernocchi) in the nineties. He is (was?) also a talk show host in Japan and has a duo cd out with DJ Krush from last year. 'Nerve Tripper' is his second effort with another DJ, DJ Sahib on turntables on 5 of the 8 tracks here. Kondo plays solo electric trumpet with effects and programs beats and the rest of the sonic environment. Kondo sounds as if he has been influenced by the Miles' electric trumpet explorations, but has taken them to even more intense heights. DJ Sahib adds some sinister samples which bubble like an overflowing cauldron as Kondo's horn growls mysteriously on top, creating moody, minimal ghost-like apparitions.

HELGE LIEN TRIO - Spiral Circle (DIW 627; Japan) Helge Lien (p), Frode
Berg (b, Chinese ball & cup), Knut Aalefjar (ds). Recorded in Rainbow
Studio, February 16-17, 2002 You can find their talent on hearing the
flow from the gentle "Liten Jazzballong" of track 1 through track 2
"No Mountains" with irregular time. Beyond "En Gansuke Liten Luding"
like an interlude, dialogue of Helge's single note and Frode's technical
play on the bass is so impressive on "Quiet Now" exactly the silence
dominates. Emphasizing low tone just as Helge's another project called
"Tri O'trang" is "Speak No Evil". When you listen to this trio carefully,
you can find that Helge doesn't play the piano simply. He sometimes
picks the strings or muting. Their 3 talents are noteworthy that they
constructed the songs with holding themselves in front of free improvisation.
After the beautiful "Psalm", Knut let us hear the amazing drum solo
on the introduction of "Take Five". After 1-minute drum solo part putting
together his sense and technique, you can hear that familiar melody.
And this interplay is well worth listening to. Strained these 3 technicians'
dialogue is gradually assuming the heat and going back to the theme
on the verge of collapse... On finishing this album with the last song
"Som I En Stein" like a requiem, you can't help hearing from the beginning
again.

jazz, played ballads over the whole work. This work is a sequel to "Lovers".
Including the heartrending songs composed by him and his sworn friend
Dave Burrell (p) who is both an active player in the free jazz scene
and a great melody maker, and the pungent solo tune by the freak tone
of his forte. This marvelous work is not only emotional but also the
one that never tends to be a superficial sentimentalism, and so, even
hard-liners will recognize this work very much!

(DIW-814). "Lovers" is a graceful ballad album, but in this album, manipulating
brilliant big tone, he is blowing and blowing. It is no exaggeration
to say that this album showed one perfected formality of hard driving
jazz.

Burrell (p), Fred Hopkins (b), Ralph Peterson Jr. (ds). Recorded at
A&R Recording, New York in January 1988. David Murray, who praises
from the masters of Swing-era to A. Ayler and covered them, collects
his own "spirituals". This is placed as a novel work in his career,
but it's no exaggeration to say that this work reveals an essential
part of him.

DAVID MURRAY QUINTET With DAVE BURRELL/HUGH RAGIN/WILBUR MORRIS/TANI TABBAL - Remembrances (DIW 849; Japan) David Murray (ts),
Hugh Ragin (tp), Dave Burrell (p), Wilber Morris (b), Tani Tabbal (ds).
Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, NYC July 30, 1990. This is comparatively
rare Murray's quintet work. At the time of recording, he performed many
lives at this formation. In this work, he utilized the advantage of
permanent formation, gave the deepness to the theme and developed the
play with contrast. The musical disposition that is supported by high
technique of Hugh Ragin who had studied classic is also worthy of mention.

DAVID MURRAY - Ballads For Bass Clarinet (DIW 880; Japan) David Murray
(bcl), John Hicks (p), Ray Drummond (b), Idris Muhammad (ds) Recorded
at Power Station, NYC on October 14 & 15, 1991. Since Eric Dolphy
brought bass-clarinet into jazz, this musical instrument came to be
a touchstone, and playing this instrument means treading on a tablet
Christ for many jazz saxophone players. Marray must be still only person
who is free from spell of Dolphy when playing bass-clarinet. Centering
great original songs on, all this work is made only by bass-clarinet.
And his emotional play by John Hicks (p), whose support is gentle and
shines, is so impressive.

DAVID MURRAY - Jug-A-Lug (DIW 894; Japan) David Murray (ts, bcl), Robert
Irving III (syn, org), Bobby Broom (g), Daryl Thompson (g), Darryl Jones

at Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, Illinois on May 26 through 30,
1994. Two soulful and very contemporary outing that find the powerful
and in-the-groove tenor sax great joined by Darryl Jones and Robert
Irving III, both of whom played with Miles Davis and helped create his
sound in the 1980s. "Jug-A-Lug" has an original tribute to Ornette Coleman
by percussionist Kahil El Zabar, a lovely ballad by guitarist Broom
and five tunes by David including another classic of his, Morning Song.
Both of these discs reveal yet another very appealing facet of David
Murray's talents - the ability to make fresh contemporary jazz that
reaches out to an audience and is both expressive and groovy!

Hugh Ragin (tp), Rasul Siddik (tp), Craig Harris (tb), James Spaulding
(as, fl), Dave Burrell (p), Wilber Morris (b), Tani Tabbal (ds). Recorded
at Sound On Sound, NYC on September 1, 2, 9 & 11, 1992. Another
side of the amazing David Murray; sharp, intelligent and soulful writing
for one of his famous eight-piece bands; The David Murray Octet. The
centerpiece of the recording is a 37-minute suite that David wrote in
1992 for a commission from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Northeast
Ohio Jazz Society and Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Jazz Network. The
piece was inspired by Picasso exhibit and the famous solo saxophone
improvisation Coleman Hawkins recorded for Norman Grantz's label in
1948. It's a brilliant, multifaceted work that highlights David's magnificent
writing and the improvisational skills of this great octet. Listen for
the swirling trumpet work of Hugh Ragin; the timeless playing of former
Blue Note alto man James Spaulding; the supportive piano and individual
soloing of Dave Burrell; and, above all, the complete musicianship of
David Murray.

duo music by two giants! Murray has made many, many records, yet every
one is singular and important. And Milford Graves is something of the
father of new, avant-garde drumming with recordings for the legendary
ESP label over 30 years ago. Here, they each contribute four tunes to
a most extraordinary session.

that Murray had spun the feeling of respect and love to Coltrane. Including
original songs by Murray and Morris, a song by Coltrane and his relative
song. He showed us coexisting with "Coltrane's music" with tension that
does not settle to mere tribute album.

Recorded at Power Station, NYC on May 23, 24 and 25, 1992. Another side
of the prolific and vastly talented David Murray - as leader of a smokin'
big band. Butch Morris unusual and innovative conduction techniques
bring out truly inspired work from this all-star ensemble. Compositions
from several of the band members, along with Murray's famous Flowers
For Albert, and a joyously raucous and rhythmic version of Sonny Rollins'
St.Thomas. Surprisingly (and very effectively), much of this album has
a beautiful south of the border Latin swing feel.

DAVID MURRAY QUARTET With DON PULLEN/ANDREW CYRILLE/STANLEY FRANKS - Shakill's Warrior (DIW 850; Japan) David Murray
(ts), Don Pullen (org), Stanley Franks (g), Andrew Cyrille (ds). Recorded
at Sound On Sound, NYC on March 1 & 2, 1991. It attracted considerable
attention that the late Don Pullen held fast to organ. In 1991, the
year that this work was released, organist attracted little attention
and a new style of the organ play is long awaited. It was so creative
to desert a slovenly old-fashioned style and grope for modern organ
Jazz, and this album was just as such. The essence Murray added to it
is extremely special and is the result worthy of mention in their long
career.

DAVID MURRAY QUARTET With DON PULLEN - Shakill's II (DIW 884; Japan) David Murray (ts),
Don Pullen (org), Bill White (g), J.T. Lewis (ds). Reorded at Sound
On Sound, NYC on October 5 & 6, 1993. A perfect combination; down
home and out there; as Murray gets in the pocket with the late great
Don Pullen, who here wails on organ. This recording was made just as
Pullen had been diagnosed with lymphoma and there is an extraordinarily
deep and motivating urgency about the music here. The tunes are by these
two giants and the passion throughout is honest and all encompassing.

DAVID MURRAY With JAMES BLOOD ULMER/SUNNY MURRAY/FRED HOPKINS - David Murray (DIW 802; Japan) David Murray (ts), James
Blood Ulmer (g), Fred Hopkins (b), Sunny Murray (ds). Recorded at Sound
Ideas, New York City on May 10, 1986. This is his commemorable first
appearance on DIW. Including two songs by Butch Morris and two more
songs by David Murray, four songs are all. These members cannot make
the sound of this album ordinary, and this convey the appeal of Murray
straight. We can recognize that his attitude is consistent from the
time of this album to the later sincere tribute album to Jazz giant.

NEW YORK ART QUARTET - 35TH Reunion (DIW 936; Japan) Milford Graves
(ds), Roswell Rudd (tb), John Tchicai (sax), Reggie Workman (b), Amiri
Baraka (poetry reading on some cuts). The reunion of a legendary new
music group. The NYAQ made their first records for the ESP label in
1964 and created an esthetic that in some sense created free jazz. With
only the bassist different, this extraordinary collective is back making
sounds that are guaranteed to take you to wild and different places.
The players are remarkable; Rudd, who started in dixieland and has been
in the vanguard of new music for the trombone while never losing his
street smarts; Tchicai, from Denmark, who has a smart identifiable sound
that was part of the dense weave of the original; Graves, possibly the
most innovative drummer of the late 20th century; and bassist Workman,
who played with Coltrane and offers power, grace and intelligence. The
group is also joined by poet Amiri Baraka (aka Leroi Jones), last seen
in Warren Beatty'fs film Bulworth.

ROBERTO OTTAVIANO & MAL WALDRON - Black Spirits Are Here Again
(DIW 917; Japan) Roberto Ottaviano (ss), Mal Waldron (p). Recorded at
Studio 7, Milano on January 28 & 29, 1996. This beautiful duet album
calls to mind the classic pairing of Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy. Ottaviano,
from Italy, is a beautifully lyrical player who has a finely drawn sense
of musical line and space. He is perfectly matched with Waldron whose
long career demonstrates a brilliant knowledge of what to put in and
what to leave out. These two play just enough to make dazzling sound
poems of eight jazz classics: Eubie Blake's Memories Of You; Benny Carter's
When Lights Are Low; Duke Ellington's Come Sunday; Fats Waller's Jitterbug
Waltz; John Lewis' Django; Dizzy Gillespie's Night In Tunisia; John
Coltrane's Lonnie's Lament and Waldron's Soul Eyes.

WILLIE OTERI With MIKE KENEALLY/TONY LEVIN/PAT MASTELOTTO/EPHRAIM OWENS/RONAN CHRIS MURPHY - Spiral Out (DIW 466; Japan) Produced by R C Murphy. Tired of buying sideman projects of players in groups you like[d]? Well, I am! Just when I thought I'd never buy another non-Crimson album to hear Tony Levin, along comes this inspired release from this Austin, Texas (by way of Japan!) guitar wonderkind Willie Oteri, whose styles range from superfast runs (a la Keneally) to Hendrixian blues to Frippian washes. The basic quartet tracks of Oteri, keyboardist Murphy (who has produced Takeharu Hayakawa [Ruins] among others and engineered/mixed many of the live Crimson releases for the Collector's Club), and King Crimson rhythm section Levin and Mastelotto were laid down in 2001 with Mike Keneally's organ and Fender Rhodes and Ephraim Owens' trumpet overdubbed in early 2002. A really heady mix of sounds and styles - some tracks reminiscent of 70's Miles/Tony Williams Lifetime, while others, especially "Sundial/Spiral Out" and "First Light" are 1st rate Crimsonesque (makes you wonder what Crimso would be like if Oteri took over Belew's guitar chair - possibly re-invigorated!) All are playing great here - Four Thumbs UP! -mannylunch

JOHN PATTON QUINTET - This One's For J.A. (DIW 919; Japan) John Patton
(org), Dave Hubbard (ts), Ed Cherry (g), Eddie Gladden (ds), Lawrence
Killian (per). Produced by John Zorn & Kazunori Suguyama. Recorded
at Power Station, NYC on December 26, 1995. The sound of the classic
organ group is back - presented by one of the truly great innovators
on the Hammond B-3 organ, John Patton. Patton is an original - never
just a copier of Jimmy Smith, but an inspired and spiritual player and
composer. (He was even inspired and influenced by John Coltrane!) John
Zorn, who is a giant fan of Patton, has produced this bold and original
album which still somehow hearkens to the great Blue Note and Prestige
organ albums of days gone by. The band includes the solid saxophonist
Dave Hubbard, the complete guitarist Ed Cherry (who played and recorded
for 14 years with Dizzy Gillespie) and the tasty timekeeper, drummer
Eddie Gladden. Five of the tunes are by Patton and the band also tackles
Steam by Archie Shepp, SyeedaÅfs Song Flute by John Coltrane and
Children Of The Night by Wayne Shorter.

JOHN PATTON With JOHN ZORN - Minor Swing (DIW 896; Japan) John Patton
(org), John Zorn (as), Ed Cherry (g), Kenny Wollesen (ds). Produced
by John Zorn & Kazunori Sugiyama. Recorded at Power Station, NYC
on December 21, 1994. John Zorn has always been a fan of the funky tenor
and organ music that was so much a part of the Blue Note label in the
1960's and 1970's. One of the most dynamic of the organists from those
records was the so soulful John Patton; or Big John Patton as he was
known then. Patton is still groovin' after all these years as this killer
session with Zorn proves. He's more than just a funkmeister, though.
Says Harvey Pekar, "You hear something familiar in his work and think
you can predict where it's going, but it turns out you're not always
right / he makes every note count." This is a very special and inspired
album indee! Zorn's full range of alto sax sounds and techniques show
how much he loves Patton's - listen to his phenomenal solo on "The Way
I Feel" which Zorn also covered with Naked City on 'Live Vol 1: Knitting
Factory 1989' on the Tzadik label. All of the tunes are Patton's except
the great Tyrone, written by the late organist Larry Young.
