Hard-to-Find
VOICEPRINT/JAZZPRINT/BLUEPRINT Attention ye faithful DMG denizens!: Primarily motivated by the
desire to keep a good stock on all of Keith Tippett's classic early
works, as well as otherwise unavailable excellent recordings from a
cross-section of Brit-Jazz/Canterbury/RIO/Soft Machine alumni, and thanks
to the efforts of two of our very good British customers whom we thank
in anonymity (as they desired), we finally made a breakthrough in acquiring
a reliable and steady-cost supply of the Voiceprint family of labels
(including Jazprint, Blueprint, La Cooka Ratcha, Whatdisc, Resurgence,
231E47st, and the Gentle Giant club label Glass)
PETER BLEGVAD & JOHN
GREAVES - Unearthed (231E47st 102; UK) Peter Blegvad is a cartoonist,surrealist
and musician, a maverick storyteller and song philosopher with a vivid
imagination. He is an original member of the legendary avant garde, cult
favourites Slapp Happy. John Greaves was the original bass player for
radical 70's collective Henry Cow. This spoken word examination of the
human condition, with musical assistance from Greaves first surfaced
as a limited pressing in 1995. This rarity has now been remastered, with
new artwork by Blegvad and is now available as a commercial release
for the first time. PETER BLEGVAD - Choices Under
Pressure: An Acoustic Retrospective (Resurgence 143; UK) Peter Blegvad
sings relaxed versions of songs he wrote on several of his '90s solo
albums and also from the self-titled Slapp Happy album on virgin (plus
two new songs)while playing guitar and clarinet; backed by John Greaves
on el bass, Danny Thompson double bs, and guitarist/arranger/producer
Jakko Jakszyk also filling in on keyboards, percussion and flute. Not
to be missed! PETER BLEGVAD - King Strut
(Whatdisc 9; UK) Finally re-issued! When originally released in 1990
on Silvertone, King Strut was critically lauded as a masterful collection
of articulate and insightful short stories set to music, or as Blegvad
himself put it '...condensed narrative in rhymes...' Amongst the fantastic
selection of musicians contributing are Andy Partridge (XTC), Peter
Holsapple (REM), B.J. Cole (Verve), Syd Straw, Danny Thompson, Chris
Stamey and Anton Fier. SARO COSENTINO - Ones And
Zeros (Resurgence 129; UK) Keyboardist Saro Cosentino's song album 'One's
and Zero's' is a successful mixture of musical colours, a project that
has evolved for years, lending itself to the contributions of musicians
of very different musical and cultural backgrounds each one leaving
their own personal touch on the project. Vocalists on this album are
Peter Hammill, Tim Bowness, Karen Eden, and Pandit Dinesh; musicians
includeTrey Gunn, Jakko Jakszyk, David Rhodes, Shankar, Gavin HarrisonKudsi
Erguner and John Giblin! ELTON DEAN/ALAN SKIDMORE
With JOHN MARSHALL & CHRIS LAURENCE - El Skid (Voiceprint 230; UK)
Ogun are excruciatingly slow at releasing their back catalogue of creativer
Brit-Jazz treasures of the 70's, so it is with gratitude to those who
made this classic album get a CD issue outside of Ogun's reissue program
(such as it's not). This is a long lost album which fans of the Canterbury
Scene and Soft Machine have been waiting for. Elton Dean (Soft Machine
and In Cahoots), Alan Skidmore, Chris Laurence and John Marshall ( Soft
Machine) are the brilliant line up on this recording. Striking artwork
along with great tracks will make this a must for followers of the Canterbury
Scene and Soft Machine. GENTLE GIANT - Live Rome
1974 (Glass 101; UK) 69 minutes of an excellent performance from the
tour for their sixth album 'Power And The Glory' taken from the bands
archive of PA mix [board] tapes. Especially compelling is the 27 minute
medley "Nothing At All/Plain Truth"! GENTLE GIANT - In A Palesport
House (Glass 102; UK) 7 cuts from Torino,Italy Jan. '73 right before
their Fifth album 'In A Glass House' taken from the bands archive of
PA mix [board] tapes. Tracks 8 & 9 are from the 'In Concert' TV
show appearance GENTLE GIANT - Interview
In Concert (Glass 103; UK) 9 cuts from Hgrpstem, NY 7/3/76, including
a very long medley of songs from "Octopus". Recorded on the
tour for their eighth album 'Interview', taken from the bands archive
of PA mix [board] tapes. GENTLE GIANT - Endless Life
[2 CD set] (Glass 108; UK) Endless Life contains two previously unreleased
(appx board tape quality) live concerts by powerful live band! Recorded
on the Free Hand tour of the U.S. in October 1975, the first disc was
recorded at the Music Hall in White Plains, New York and the second
at The Community Theater in Berkley, California. Amongst the highlights
is the 15 minute Excerpts From Octopus, which includes Boys In The Band,
Knots and The Advent Of Panurge, the amazing violin solo on Plain Truth
and the drum solo on So Sincere. ALAN GOWEN & HUGH HOPPER
With NIGEL MORRIS - Improvisations (Voiceprint 186; UK) Rare unreleased
but well-worth-the-listening recordingsfrom the last three years of
Alan Gowen's (National Health) life, during which he collaborated with
Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine) on the classic album Two Rainbows Daily.
The first three cuts are a trio with Nigel Morris captured live 9/21/80
at South Hill, Bracknell; the remaining cuts, France May '78, are the
duo improvising four pieces and performing Elton Dean's "Ranova"!
JOHN GREAVES - Accident (Blueprint
234; UK) More pop than prog from theHenry Cow/National Health bassist,
Accident is a collection of songs as remarkable for its atmospheric
breadth as for its consistency of vision, creating a musical climate
which is uniquely Greavesian, precisely situating Peter Blegvad's haunting
texts. Greaves plays keyboards, bass and sings, accompanied by a Euro-mix
of Gongos (Pip Pyle), Caravanners (Geoff Richardson), Magmites (Yocko
Seffer) and a host of others. Accident says goodbye to an era and hints
uncannily at what was to come in the 80's but, above all, like all Greaves'
work, is resolutely fixed outside any mainstream you could dream of.
Why Accident? Greaves says: "Because in music there aren't any".
JOHN GREAVES - The Caretaker
(Blueprint 347; UK) John Greaves has had a long and distinguished career
having been a member of Henry Cow and later becoming a highly respected
composer and solo artist. 'The Caretaker' is John's brand new studio
album and is a follow up to 'Songs' (RES112CD). This new album not only
has songs written by John but also by Peter Blegvad (Slapp Happy) and
Andy Partridge (XTC). This album will appeal to both John's and Peter's
loyal fanbases and features striking attention grabbing artwork. JOHN GREAVES - Songs (Resurgence
112; UK) John Greaves has had a long and distinguished career having
been a member of Henry Cow and later becoming a highly respected composer
and solo artist. Here is perhaps his greatest 'pop' effort, backed by
Sophia Domncich, Paul Rogers, and Francois Ovide. Featuring special
guest vocalists Robert Wyatt (3 truly Overpewering from start to finish!
excellent songs!) Caroline Loeb, Kristoffer Blegvad, and S'Ange. [SLAPP HAPPY] DAGMAR KRAUSE/ANTHONY
MOORE/PETER BLEGVAD - Camera (Blueprint 332; UK) A reunion of the trio
of talents who were known as Slapp Happy in the '70s, who, along with
Henry Cow, started the'RIO' movement. Here Dagmar stars as Melusina
with additional roles by John Harris, Quentin Hayes, Nicole Tibbels
and Ewart James Waters performing an opera originally written for television
by Moore (music) and Blegvad (lyrics) and backed by a woodwind and brass
ensemble led by the Balenescu (string) Quartet. DAGMAR KRAUSE - Tank Battles:
The Songs of Hanns Eisler (Blueprint 318; UK) Helped with her desire
to bring out an album of songs by the early 20th century German songwriter
Eisler by Tom Waits expressed interest in the project, Waits' bassist
and musical director Greg Cohen (Masada) arranged and produced this
diverse group assemblage that included guest musicians Michael Blair,
Danny Thompson, Alex Balenescu, John Tilbury and Lindsay Cooper and
a large ensemble including accordion, marimba, banjo, woodwinds. This
is a tour-de-force album for Dagmar, displaying the full breadth and
depth of her uniquely emotional and compelling voice! HOWARD RILEY - Trisect (Jazzprint
116; UK) Originally one of three LPs in a 1980 Howard Riley box set
'Facets' on the Impetus label. This is Howard Riley solo, the great
jazz piano genius/improviser/composer who blew minds previous to this
with his CBS albums ('Angle' and 'The Day Will Come') of the early '70s.
HOWARD RILEY - Singleness
(Jazzprint 110; UK) A rare solo recording from 1974, barely circulated
as an LP, established the outline of Howard Riley's directions apart
from group interaction (his 6 records previous). An important step in
the road of this still growing master piano improvisationist. HOWARD RILEY - Duality (Jazzprint
113; UK) A solo studio recording from 1981, this presents a marked contrast
to his solo piano recordings made years past and in the future. HOWARD RILEY/BARRY GUY/JOHN
STEVENS - Organic (Jazzprint 116; UK) Originally one of three LPs in
a 1980 Howard Riley box set 'Facets' on the Impetus label. This is a
wonderful and powerful improv session between three giants: Riley on
piano, Barry Guy on doublebass, and John Stevens. For those who love
SME and all things "outbetween"! HOWARD RILEY/ELTON DEAN QUARTET
- Descending Circles (Blueprint 221; UK) The 2nd release (1995) by this
piano-and-sax-led unit that includes Mario Castronari and Mark Sanders.
PETER SINFIELD - Stillusion
[aka Still] (Blueprint 223; UK) Legendary art-rock lyrisist/composer/producer
Sinfield wrote the lyrics for the first four King Crimson albums (guaranteeing
him a place in rock history!) as well as for early '70s ELP, and produced
the 1st Roxy Music album as well as recordings for PFM. His only solo
vocal record from that period, Still, is a woundrous jewel-textured
musical odyssey deftly performed by musicians as varied as Keith Tippett,
Greg Lake, Ian Wallace, Mel Collins, John Wetton, Robin Miller (all
Crimsonites) as well as Keith Christmas, Tim Hinckley, Brian Cole and
Richard Brunton. SLAPP HAPPY - Sort Of (Blueprint
318; UK) The classic first album by this originator (along with Henry
Cow) of the Rock-In-Opposition [RIO] movement. Here are The first appearances
of Dagmar Krause, Peter Blegvad and Anthony Moore, backed by the powerfully
creative musicianship of Faust: Gunther Wusthoff, Werner "Zappa"
Diermaier, and Jean Herve Peron (Faust also backed them on the rejected-by-Virgin
first recording of their 2nd album,, Casablanca Moon. The Faust version
was released years later as Acnalbasac Noom - Virgin got it backwards!)
An odd, classic Masterpiece! SOFT MACHINE - Live 1970
(Blueprint 290; UK) Tracks 1 & 2 are from a performance on 2/14/1970
at the London School Of Economics with Lyn Dobson , Mike Ratledge, Hugh
Hopper, and Robert Wyatt. The rest of the tracks on this CD formed the
entirety of the previously released 'Live At The Proms' (Royal Albert
Hall 8/13/70 with Elton Dean, Ratledge, Hopper and Wyatt) LP/CD on the
Reckless label, though the starting cut "Out-Bloody-Rageous"
has had its beginning edited here. But don't let that deter you from
getting your hands on this absolutely great performance! SOFT MACHINE - Live At The
Paradiso 1969 (Blueprint 193; UK) An absolutely phenomal and definitive
document of Soft Machine at the time of their 2nd album! Recorded at
the Paradiso in Amsterdam on 3/29/69. Robert Wyatt drumming and vocals,
Hugh Hopper bass, and Mike Ratledge keyboards. Highly recommended! THIRD EAR BAND - Songs From
Hydrogen Jukebox (Blueprint 283; UK) This recording evolved from a performance
that took place at The Arts Lab in London's Drury Lane in 1969. It features
an incarnation of the band as a six piece, before they signed to the
Harvest Label. Includes classic line up of Glen Sweeney, Lyn Dobson
and Martin Carter. THIRD EAR BAND - Magic Music
[aka New Age Magical Music] (Blueprint 257; UK) The first of the albums
done after the classic early '70s output, this maintains the high quality
of those early releases, with Glen Sweeney, Lyn Dobson, Mick Carter
and Neil Black. " Third Ear Band music is a reflection of the universe
as magic play illusion simply because it could not possibly be anything
else. Words cannot describe this ecstatic dance of sound, or explain
the alchemical repetition seeking and sometimes finding archetypal forms,
elements and rhythms - contradictions are their energy force, dualities
are discarded in favour of the tao, each piece is alike or unalike as
trees, grass or crickets. This is natural, magical music that doesn't
preach, but just urges you to take your own trip." DAVID THOMAS & RONNIE
GUNN - The Giants Dance (Blueprint 223; UK) Pre-Genesis scholars (no,
not biblical!) will know singer/guitarist David Thomas (no, not the
Pere Ubu one!) and keyboardist Ronnie Gunn as the creative team behind
a 60's band The Spoken Word that included Anthony Phillips on guitar
and Peter Gabriel on drums!!! A charming pot-pourri of songs and instrumentals
mainly dating from the late-sixties to mid-seventies, The Giants Dance
represents a glorious insight into the work of two early contributors
to the mighty Genesis legacy. The Giants Dance, as Peter Gabriel eloquently
states in the sleevenotes that accompany the album, is "full of
atmosphere, interesting chord progessions, poignant singing and quirky
arrangements." The Giants Dance - a very English (pre-art rock)
treasure. KEITH And JULIE TIPPETT -
Couple In Spirit II: Live At The Stadtgarten, Cologne 1996 (La Cooka
Racha 137; UK) If only to prove that the amazingly fertile and vastly
colorful canvas of their stunning first improv duo effort [1988] was
not merely the result of studio overdubbing, one needs to hear this
amazing display of spontaneous musical conversation that goes beyond
telepathy and ultimate musicality, and ascends to the spiritualty that
is behind all beauty. Keith on piano woodblocks pebbles maraca bells,
and the abstract vocalist Julie (formerly Miss Driscoll, the chantreuse
with Brian Auger and the Trinity in the '60s!) with thumb piano, recorder,
and wind chimes. KEITH TIPPETT - Blueprint
(La Cooka Racha 146; UK) Along with the "Ovary Lodge" trio
album which followed it (think of this as Ovary Lodge "0")
this is one of the spectacular all-time classics [1972] of spontaneous
improv. The level of telepathy here between pianist Keith, bassist Roy
Babbington, Julie Tippetts on voice /guitar/recorder, Keith Bailey percussion,
and ultra-sensitive vibrationist [percussionist is the wrong word for]
Frank Perry is stunning: you really can't believe that these are not
written pieces...and you can't believe that it's purely acoustic either,
so incredible and beautiful is the array of tapestry and texture on
display here! And yet these disclaimers: "All music on this album
is improvised" - Keith Tippett; "The sounds are acoustic -
no electronics are involved " - producer Robert Fripp. Don't miss
this! KEITH TIPPETT - Friday The
13th (La Cooka Racha 136; UK) Originally released only in Japan, this
is a stunning solo live performance from the early '90s. Tippett's approach
to piano is as though the instrument were an entire orchestra (as opposed
to, say, Cecil Taylor's piano representing 88 drums); he wrings out
huge clusters of dense sound, that, should you get lost in the spell
of it, you might forget what combination of instruments, and how many
or what of them are electronic (one instrument live, and neither!)
[KEITH TIPPETT] MUJICIAN
And THE GEORGIAN ENSEMBLE - The Bristol Concert (Whatdisc 7; UK) Recorded
prior to the first of their 5 studio releases on the Cuneiform label,
Mujician (Keith Tippett: piano, Paul Dunmall: saxes, Tony Levin: drums,
Paul Rogers: double bass), formed in England in 1988 as an improvising
collective, were involved, along with vocalist Julie Tippetts, in an
experiment with 12 Georgian musicians in 1991. It was decided that the
jumping-off point for this collaboration between musicians, and indeed
musical cultures, that had never met before, would be some of Keith's
compositions from his large ensemble recordings, primarily the Centipede
- Septober Energy, KT's Ark - Frames, and KT Septet - A Loose Kite albums.
This is the final performance (the last of four performances: 2 in Tbilisi
and 2 in England) captured live by the BBC at St George's Brandon Hill
and and released 9 years after the fact. The uncontained exuberance
that rises out of these new versions is due in no small part to the
Georgians discovering a hitherto unknown musical freedom in the approach
to charted music (in some ways a parallel to the political freedom being
reached for in their homeland at that time). Highest recommendation!
KEITH TIPPETT/HOWARD RILEY
- Interchange [aka The Bern Concert] (Jazzprint 109; UK) Their 3rd duet
album, previously released as "The Bern Concert", this one
is recorded at the Swiss Radio DRS studio in Bern on 12/8/93. These
two master improvisationalists of the keyboard become one multilingual
voice yet anew! KEITH TIPPETT/HOWARD RILEY
- In Focus (Jazzprint 111; UK) Originally an LP on the Affinity label,
this is one continous improvisation in concert 6/13/84 at the Tramshed,
Woolwich, London during the Greenwich Festival. Two master pianists
with contrasting styles, both firmly rooted in the jazz and classical
traditions, explore new terrain with one empathetic voice! KEITH TIPPETT/HOWARD RILEY
- First Encounter (Jazzprint 114; UK) Originally one of three LPs in
a 1980 Howard Riley box set 'Facets' on the Impetus label. this new
cd edition contains all of the concert which was only presented in edited
form on LP. These two masters of piano improv jazz construct and destruct
forms and motifs while surging forward, continually enlarging the foundation,
and its incipient energy, upon which a new form rises till the very
end! JULIE TIPPETTS - Shadow Puppeteer
(La Cooka Ratcha 101; UK) 2000 release. Only the third album Julie has
released under her own name in as many decades ('Sunset Glow' in 1976,
and as Julie Driscoll - '1969', after leaving Brian Auger And The Trinity
in '68), this was a true labor of love, three years in the making, with
all voices and instruments (zithers, bells, chimes, allsorts) performed
and recorded solely by herself in an 8 track studio. It would be interesting
to compare experiences with those who read the booklet 'lyrics' first
if you happened to instead listen first, or vice versa (if you didn't),
as this long but always interesting voyage into primal chanting, geniatical
chorusing, and odd textural beauty only touches infrequently upon the
implied [english] language of the printed text for the various parts
of this song cycle, yet still manipulates the listener through the moods
and emotions expressed, much like the conscious puppet(s) who cannot
fathom the forces that motivate them. (All the preceding = Highly Recommended!)
**MUJICIAN [KEITH TIPPETT/PAUL
DUNMALL/TONY LEVIN/PAUL ROGERS] - Birdman (Cuneiform 82; USA) Mujician
are an extraordinary UK improvising/free jazz quartet, featuring Keith
Tippett-piano, Paul Dunmall-reeds, Paul Rogers-bass, & Tony Levin-drums.
Intense-yet-controlled, with dynamic interplay from all four musicians.
Mujician's music is notable for its wide range of musical interplay,
its contrast between fiery freedom & calm melodies, and for it's
wide variety of tonal color. They manage to be both ''avant garde''
