JUST A FEW NEW RELEASES FOR SEPTEMBER 28TH 1. BURNT SUGAR-Blood on the Leaf (Trugroid) Acid-funk-jazz-rock-psych mostly instrumental Miles' 'Agarta' meets Eddie Hazel in a back room - live, laid back and on-the-money! Led by longtime Village Voice writer and guitar great Greg "Ironman" Tate who used to lead Women in Love with Morgan Michael Craft, Rene Akhan & Kirk Douglass on more guitars, Vijay Iver on piano, Bruce Mack on synth, Jared Nickerson & Jason DiMatteo on basses, Simmie on electric violin, Eisa Davis on vocals, Swiss Chris, Eric Eigner & Qasim Naqvi on drums & percussion. Even with all of these fine players, this music has a subdued inner fire that burns bright from within. No US distribution at present. $14. 2. SECRET CHIEFS 3 - Book M (Mimicry 006) Featuring Mr. Bungle members Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn, Danny Heifetz, Bar McKinnon plus Eyvind Kang & William Winant. An instrumental odyssey with a full string section, an assortment of Persian, Turkish & Arabic string & percussion instruments, microtonal synth, organ, guitars with innovative composing and off-the-wall recording. Moments of violent aggression are merged with tenderness and subtlety in another world of alien sounds. $14. 3. DALE BRUNING & BILL FRISELL - Reunion (Jazzlink 440072) This gem came out a few months back, but received very little attention except for one article in one of them guitar magazines. Dale Bruning was Bill Frisell's (jazz guitar) teacher way back when and here both of these fine plectrum specialists play many jazz standards for just two guitars. Two cd set for about $21. 4. SUSAN ALCORN - "Uma" (Loveletter 010) Solo pedal steel guitar with a bit of trombone provided by David Dove. Susan Alcorn is a marvelous pedal steel player from Texas that Eugene Chadbourne has worked with and has been raving about for a while now. Susan and her band back Eugene on his forthcoming Boxholder release and it is just incredible! "Uma" is mainly a solo pedal steel effort which is sublime, moody, lovely, melancholy and often haunting. Susan wrote most of the tunes, but also does a Thelonius Monk medley and ends with a transcendent version of "Amazing Grace" (yo Raymon!) $14. 5. SETH MISTERKA & THE MISTERKA CLONES - President's Day (newsonic 27) Seth is a former Braxton student and collaborator. Check out this great review from the Wire's Julian Cowley - "Behind their Misterka masks lurk baritone saxophonist Brian Glick, accordionist Pete Cafarella, bassist Seth Dellinger and drummer Nate Smith. Wearing his own face, leader Seth Misterka plays alto sax. Their instruments are brandished like tokens of menace, generating confrontational rhythms, swaggering tones, threatening wails. Imagine John Lurie with attitude, plus a larger dose of rock and a firm grounding in the folk music from the fringes of Europe. The bold changes of time signature are scrupulously choreographed. It flexes its muscles, but this is gutsy and imaginative music played by The Clones with total commitment." Reviewed by BLG next month. $10. 6. SETH MISTERKA - MOH (newsonic 17) This review was done by Jon Morgan of Signal-to-Noise- "Seth Misterka's most recent departure in the electronic void is the document of one man left alone with his vices and devices over a six-month period. On, MOH, Misterka performs on guitar, bass, drums, alto sax, electronics, and indulges in a whole lot of splicing and dicing to create eleven layered, texturally diverse pieces. The pieces range from ambient musings full of droning guitars and surly alto runs, to rugged melodic excursions full of jagged twists and turns, and even a bit of cultural parody (check out the hilarious "Pornographic Music"). Misterka is a pleasantly raw alto player who isn't afraid to get a bit gritty on the reed, but equally important, he doesn't shy away form taking chances either, as some of the discs more extreme soundscapes suggest. Taken as a whole, MOH reveals a musician with plenty on his mind, and thanks to technology it isn't necessary to have a hefty bank trust to bring this project to fruition. Do yourself a favor and check this disc out." $10. 7. JANNICK TOP-1)Soleil d'Ork (France) $16.00 A DOZEN OR SO WONDERFUL, ESSENTIAL & CLASSIC 10. ART BLAKEY- The Witch Doctor w/ Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby
Timmons, & Jymie Merritt.
