NEWS FROM ZORN-LAND: The John Zorn classical gig at Miller Theatre last week was wonderful. The pre-concert interview with Mr. Zorn was honest, illuminating, hilarious and charming. John discussed his working methods of composing and dealing with commissions. He mentioned that "detail" was the most important part of composing and he doesn't deal with the macro-structure of a work, since he must find surprise in the way a piece unfolds as he composes. He claims to write with pen and paper only and dislikes computers - "the only thing I want to see on a tv or monitor screen is Kirk Douglas!" he says. The Absolute Ensemble played great versions of "For Your Eyes Only", "Kol Nidre" and "Contes de Fees" - a violin concerto which is up for a Pulitzer Prize award! Masada also played a short and breathtaking and riveting set with Kenny Wollesen subbing for Joey. Zorn's first solo was magnificent - playing a few different melodies simultaneously! Reggie Workman has been added to the line-up of Derek Bailey-John Zorn-Joey Baron on December 15th at Tonic, so get you tickets now, before they sell out!

FOUR COMPLETELY COSMIC FREE-JAZZ REISSUES FROM THE BYG-ACTUEL LABEL JUST RELEASED ON VINYL ONLY!!!

1. SONNY SHARROCK - Monkey-Pockie-Boo (Get Back 337) This incredibly intense album was recorded in Paris on June 22nd, 1969 with his wife Linda on screaming vocals plus Ben Guerin (bass) and Jacques Thollot (drums). Sonny Sharrock was one of the top avant-garde guitarists and his playing was intense and ferocious. He mixed together Jimi Hendrix and Pharoah Sanders. Sharrock was the first guitarist to really embrace fire music. He wanted his playing to mirror the emotional scream of the tenor saxophone! This is one of the furthest out and scariest records I have ever heard!!! Original artwork, gatefold sleeve & 180 gram high quality vinyl. Available on lp only at $15.

2. DEWEY REDMAN - Tarik (Get Back 334). This is Dewey Redman's second recording as a leader and it took place at Studio E.T.A. in Paris on October 1st, 1969 (at the time he was working regularly with Ornette Coleman). Tenor saxophonist Redman is joined here on five of his own compositions by Art Ensemble's Malachi Favors (bass) and Ed Blackwell (drums). His playing exhibited a wild style always involving the practice of mouthing and vocalizing. Original artwork, gatefold sleeve & 180 gram high quality vinyl. LP only release for $15.

3. JACQUES COURSIL UNIT - Way Ahead LP (Get Back 319). This album was recorded at Studio Saravah in Paris on July 7th and 8th, 1969. Trumpeter Jacques Coursil recorded these 3 tracks with the help of the amazing Arthur Jones (alto sax), Claude Delcloo (drums) and Beb Guerin (bass). Coursil is an incredible free-jazz trumpeter whose work with America's finest out-jazz cats certainly deserves more recognition. Original artwork, gatefold sleeve & 180 gram HQ vinyl. Album only release at $15.

4. TERRY RILEY / PIERRE MARIETAN - Keyboard Study 2/Initiative (Get Back 327). A split release between Terry Riley and French avant-garde composer Pierre Marietan that was recorded in Paris on September 30th and October 1st, 1969. Riley's piece is a 24-minute work for 2 pianos (Gérard Frémy and Martine Joste of the GERM ensemble - Groupe d'Etude et Réalisation Musicale). Marieten's piece is performed by the full GERM ensemble including Philippe Blachette (violin), Philippe Drogoz (double bass), Louis Roquin (trumpet), Chantal Lemaire (cello), Gérard Frémy (piano), Martine Joste (piano), Jean-Yves Bosseur (rebab and little flute), Bernadette Val (soprano voice) plus the composer himself on french horn. Original artwork, gatefold sleeve, 180 gram HQ vinyl - vinyl only release priced at $15.

A FEW NEW RELEASES & A REISSUE OR TWO FOR DECEMBER 7th

5. SUSSAN DEYHIM - Madman Of God Divine Love Songs Of the Persian Sufi Masters (Crammed 22) Considering Sussan is one of the most enchanting vocalists in the world it is nearly impossible to find her 2 previous domestic releases. DMG has finally received copies of her 2 new wonderful CDs. This one features Richard Horowitz, Glen Velez, Raz Mesinai, Kursh Kale, Wil Calhoun & Reggie Workman. Completely fabulous! No US distribution. $17

6. SUSSAN DEYHIM - Turbulent (Isle X) Recorded in Marrakesh, Turkey & NYC, this is film music for the director Shirin Nashat. Astonishing and transcendent. Nowhere to be found but here. $17

7. JAMES EMERY - JOE LOVANO - JUDI SILVANO - DREW GRESS - Fourth World (Between the Lines 020) James Emery (guitar), Joe Lovano (clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor, soprano saxes, clarinet, percussion), Judi Silvano (voice, flute, gong), Drew Gress (bass) Recorded: May 15-16, 2000. The appeal of James Emery's new CD stems from the multifarious levels of the musical action. "In Hannah", an intelligent bossa nova atmosphere is created during the improvised exchanges between Lovano's tenor saxophone and Silvano's flute, underpinned by somber Latin rhythms. "The Next Level" establishes a contrasting mood: the heated exchange between the guitar and the alto saxophone ventures into new dimensions of sound. In "Golden Horn", with its brawny bass introduction, Lovano not only features in an exciting improvisation on the tenor saxophone but also provides the appropriate beats. It is always great to hear new a release from the under-recorded guitar giant - James Emery. $15.

8. BARRY ALTSCHUL TRIO - Brahma (Sackville 3023) Featuring Ray Anderson on trombone, Mark Helias on contrabass and Barry Altschul on drums & percussion. Excellent and challenging studio date from January of 1980 from one of the most creative drummers of new music/avant-jazz and percussionist of choice for Paul Bley, Anthony Braxton and Sam Rivers. Sackville reissues released in limited editions of 1,000 and the price of each single has just been lowered back to $17.

9. UM - Stray Dog (Ropeadope/Outrageous) Featuring John Medeski on organ, Hal Crook on trombone, Rick Peckham on guitar, Dave Zinno on bass and Bob Gullotti on drums. Smokin' live date from Providence, R.I. in May of '99 from this (former?) Boston all-star quintet! $13.

10. THE TREY GUNN BAND - Live Encounter (First World 0113) Featuring Trey on 10-string Warr guitar (from King Crimson), Joe Mendelson on 8-string Warr guitar (from Fibre & Rise Robots Rise), Tony Geballe on electric & acoustic guitars and Bob Muller on drums. Most impressive progressive quartet led by current Crimson Warr guitarist (or stick) Trey Gunn and in the Crimson vein, but still distinctive in their own right. $14.

11. PAUL STEVEN RAY - Shinespace (OVRG) Featuring Yuko Fujiyama on piano and organ, Eli Fontaine on drums and Paul Steven Ray on piccolo bass guitar with effects. Spacey, swirling, free-range trio with some drum n'bass rhythms flowing through to immensely intense free-flowing post-fusion insanity. $14.

12. TRUDY SILVER - Damn the Rules (Stork Music 1031) Featuring Trudy on piano and compositions, Anthony Braxton, Will Connell, Bruce Morris, Elke Fernholz & Robert Paskowitz on saxes, Kaneo Yamashita on violin, Barbara Christopher on vocals and Holger Zehrt on drums. This consists of two long and winding and stimulating works for trio (piano/soprano sax/drums) and a seven piece unit with four saxes which was recorded live at Braxton's Tri-Centric Festival in September of 1998. $14.

13. SEPTIMANIA - Welcome to Septimania (Commodify This! 001) Septimania is Jonathan Thomas & friends who include Rick Brown (V-Effect-Run On), Angel Dean, Chris Nelson (The Scene is Now) and various members of the Amoebic Ensemble - which Jonathan was a member of. Mr. Thomas plays mostly kitchenware percussion and keyboards and put together this extremely odd yet charming cd. Instrumentation includes quite a diverse range - pedal steel, violin, mandolin, contrabassoon, bazouki, autoharp, musical saw, saxes, trumpet, accordion and keyboards. Jon's goofy percussion is at the center of each of these pieces and there is always the element of fun involved. Slightly twisted exotica, surf and other endearing weirdness. Certain to be a hit on WFMU! $10.

14. E.A.R. [EXPERIMENTAL AUDIO RESEARCH] - Continuum (Space Age Orbit 026) "Now settled on the Space Age Recording label he helped to form, EAR are all set to release their most audacious and ambitious record yet. The results are simply unlike anything else you will have heard. Creating an incredible album of atonal wonder and spell binding intoxication. EAR have, without a doubt, pushed the boundaries of sound to a new level with 'Continuum'. Limited initial pressing of 1000 copies in translucent jewel box. $14.

15. RONRUINS - Ketsunoana (Pandemonium 026) First fabulous release from Ron Anderson and THE RUINS, which I never saw or heard of!?! Another intense endeavor with our favorite Japanese power duo/now trio! This shit is insane! A French import which will probably disappear quickly. $15.

ANOTHER BATCH OF MOSTLY IMPORT REISSUE CD'S ON SALE:

Includes two bonus tracks only found on Ornette's box set. $12.

20. DR. JOHN, THE NIGHT TRIPPER - Gris-Gris (Atco/Germany) This is Mac Rebennak's first legit release from 1968 and it is a completely mind-blowing classic of New Orleans psychedelic-funk-voodoo-gumbo! BRIAN ENO - Before & After Science (EG/Holland) Fourth and final gem from Brian's fabulous prog/rock period with guests - Fred Frith, Robert Fripp, Jaki Liebzeit, Percy Jones, Phil Manzanera, Dave Mattacks and Moebius & Roedelius from Cluster! This was and still is my favorite Eno album of all time. $12.

26. BRIAN ENO & ROBERT FRIPP - No Pussyfooting (EG/UK) This was the beginning of Eno's cosmic, looping endeavor in which he took Fripp's electric guitar and looped it through two reel-to-reel tape recorders - lengthening Fripp's already cosmic sonic sound and repeating it with long delays. A favorite of stoners world-wide! $12.

27. BRIAN ENO - Music for Films (EG/UK) Early in Eno's ambient explorations this gem features help from most of the personnel listed above. Instrumental, sublime, moody, enchanting and elegantly produced. $12.

38. MC5 - Kick Out the Jams (Elektra/Germany) One of the heaviest, most brutal, overwhelmingly intense and over-the-top debuts of all time - from Detroit's Motor City Five! The dual guitar army of Fred "Sonic" Smith & brother Wayne Kramer and screaming vocals of Rob Tyner turned a country tune "Ramblin' Rose" and Sun Ra's "Starship" into early punk-rock, free-jazz-noise anthems! $12.

39. MC5 - High Time (Elektra/Germany) Their and final studio date from 1971 and still rockin' pretty hard! $12.
