MARIO PAVONE/MICHAEL MUSILLAMI QUARTET - op ed (Playscape 21901) Featuring Peter Madsen on piano, Michael on guitar, Mario on contrabass and Michael Sarin on drums. The is a superb modern jazz quartet date which features a few of our favorite friends - Mario Pavone is a consistently powerful bassist and composer, who along with Michael Sarin (from a few Dave Douglas units) were the late, great Thomas Chapin's amazing rhythm team. Musillami is also a fabulous jazz guitarist and composer who also utilized the talents of Thomas Chapin on a number fine releases and currently runs the Playscape label. Peter Madsen has been the longtime partner in Mario's past and present ensembles and is one of the finest jazz pianists around, never ceasing to impress all who hear him live or one record. This is the second excellent release for this fabulous quartet, both this newer one and the previous one ('motion poetry') sell for (cd only) CD $14. 6. [BROTHER JAMIE SAFT & MR. DORGON] PRAMROD SEXENA - Gods Special People (Jumbo/Frank Booth 2002) The cover art of this vinyl only release features Christ's head pasted on top on Ozzy's body in a demonically religious pose, so we know we are in store for some strange stuff. Jamie is an ever-inventive electric keyboard wiz and dub-master who has been working with Zorn in a variety of projects over the past few years and whose second Tzadik cd will be out in June. The mysterious and striking local saxist - Dorgon is also filled with weird surprises and continues to garner legendary status is gullible zines like the Wire. [RON ANDERSON - OLIVIER PAQUOTTE - CAMEL ZEKRI] - The Infusion (33Revpermi 2105) Ron Anderson is a relentlessly inspired guitarist for RonRuins, PAK and former bay area crazies - the Molecules! Camel Zekri plays acoustic guitar and electronics, grew up in Algeria and now lives in Paris. Olivier Paquotte is a phenomenal French bassist who does all sorts of odd things to his bass to coax out a variety of sounds. Together they improvise live in the studio, with excerpts from live gigs as well and show how far out they can travel. An imaginative mix of free-form and world influences. CD $14. 11. OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/KEITH ROWE/TAKU SUGIMOTO - Ajar (Alcohol S1) Subtle sonic manipulation guitar trio recorded at LMC Sound in London and engineered and mixed by Xentos. Their recent trio set at Tonic was one of the year's highlights. Florescent pink cardboard wallet insert with amusing color snaps of the players, who surely need no introduction. CD $16. 12. MYLES BOISEN - Scrambledisc (guitarspeak vol. 2) (Wiggle Biscuit 005) This Beefheart/H. Cow influenced CD features Scott Amendola, Klaus Fluoride, Elliott Humberto Kavee, Gino Robair, etc. Myles is one of the stranger guitarists to emerge from the Bay Area and is a member of the Splatter Trio. He Loves to process his guitar as do all the musicians on this CD making it hard to tell who's doing what. He did a great job of producing the latest Frith CD on W&W. CD $14 13. THE BEVIS FROND - What Did for the Dinosaur (Rubric 41) Another fabulous slice of post-sixties psych/rock/folk from our good pal Nick Saloman and his gnome-like power trio. Great songs, endearing Elvis Costello-like voice and loads of mind-blowing psychedelic geetar solos. CD $ 13. 14. CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE - Music For Big Ears (Staalplaat 156) This recent re-discovery was started by Barooni, when they were still housed in Staalplaat. Since then Palestine has had releases on Alga Marghen and World Serpent, as well as many hard to get limited edition releases for galleries. In summer of 2000, Staalplaat commissioned a special project for him: to play music on the carillon of a church in Berlin. Afterwards the recordings were mixed by Palestine and Radboud Mens in a studio in Amsterdam. "At 15 years old I started to play the bells in the church tower next to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Everyday for six years, I evolved a sonority that changed and transformed like a soap opera using the 25 bells as clang oscillators. Playing this very physical instrument at the same time that I developed my electronic music helped my search for "sonority versus energy". A signature of my sonic investigations - I developed the sonorities on this disk specially for the Daimler-Benz carillon in Berlin and for Jeffrey Bossing the carilloner of this instrument and myself using our four fists and four legs... As this form of sound making takes a big instrument in a big tower played in a big way - I call this work 'Music For Big Ears.'-- C. Palestine. CD only release for $15. 15. ROGER REYNOLDS - All Known All White (Pogus 21025) Pogus is delighted to be reissuing these three long out of print works from the wonderful barrier breaking composer - Roger Reynolds! From the liner notes: "...the serpent-snapping eye" (1978) was composed for trumpet, percussion, piano and four-channel tape. The work is twenty minutes long, divided into three roughly equal sections. In the first, the primary aim of the performers is to match, submit to and intensify the taped sounds. The second, in which the synthesized sounds are sparse, introduces a felling of independence as the performers respond, reflecting on models provided by the tape. In the final section, the live performers complement and elaborate upon -- they attempt to augment -- the synthesized sound. "Ping" and "Traces", were composed to complement one another. "Ping" represents a continuing interest in theater and inter-media running through Reynolds' compositions since "The Emperor of Ice Cream" (1961-62). In live performance the three strands of events occur simultaneously but are not synchronized. As a recorded performance, "Ping" is a self-sustained composition of instrumental improvisation over taped and electronic music. "Traces" was written for the composer-pianist Yuji Takahashi. Scored for solo piano, with flute, cello, ring modulator, signal generator, and six independent channels of taped sound, this work is concerned not only with events but their residues (or traces). This and all other Pogus CDs still sell for $10. 16. TOM HEASLEY - On the Sensations of Tone (Innova 566) Tom plays ambient tuba, does throat singing and works with loops and digital processing. He has played here at DMG and created a mesmerizing swarm of sounds with just his trusty tuba and processing. "This is an otherworldly drone experience. A cavernous panorama of sonic seasoning, deliciously deep drones, spiraling swells of brass shifting seismic plates"-informative/honest Innova press clip. CD $14. ALL LEO TITLES LISTED BELOW ARE DUE IN STOCK THIS WEEK ...BUT I WOULDN'T HOLD MY BREATH SINCE THEIR DISTRIBUTOR (CITY HALL) IS CONSISTENTLY LATE! 17. TAO [CARLO ACTIS DATO/YASUHIKO TACHIBANA/KEISUKE OHTA] - Tomorrow Night Gig (Leo 332) Another fantastic improv trio featuring our favorite Italian sax hero - Carlo Actis Dato along with the remarkable bassist - Tachibana and violinist/vocalist - Mr. Ohta. Recorded live in April of 2001 in Osaka. CD $15. 21. STEVE COHN - The Blair Recordings (Leo 335) An enchanting solo effort from a consistently fine pianist who layers these recordings with keyboard overdubs, shakuhachi, shofar and some voice. JOHN WOLF BRENNAN/DANIELE PATUMI - Time Jumps, Space Cracks (Leo 331) An exquisite duo of piano and contrabass from the grand Irish-born Swiss-based piano giant - John Wolf Brennan and this wonderful Italian contrabass hero. MASASHI HARADA/MAT MANERI/PHILIP TOMASIC ELECTRIC TRIO - Obliteration at the End of Multiplication (Leo 328) This is percussionist/ vocalist/(con)dancer Harada's debut with his intriguing new trio of Mat Maneri on electric baritone violin and Phil Tomasic on manipulated electric guitar. Masashi teaches at New England Conservatory and left us with three amazing releases last year and continues to dazzle us with his distinctive modern sounds. CD only release for $15. A HALF DOZEN + IMPORTANT REISSUES and RESTOCKS FOR APRIL 26th: 24. CHRIS McGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH - Brotherhood Of Breath (Akarma 200) Joe Boyd-produced first album originally released in 1971 by the RCA subsidiary Neon. South African jazz piano wonder Chris McGregor formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the '60s and later settled in London where soon formed a big band to work with on a regular basis called The Brotherhood Of Breath (essentially the Blue Notes augmented by musicians they befriended in the British jazz community). One of the truly legendary modern jazz big bands, the Brotherhood of Breath had a tremendous impact on all future European big bands. They incorporated the true spirit of South African music into an ecstatic trance of jazz and rock stylings. The culmination of the explosive group's sound reaches a majestic peak in the 20 minutes of "Night Poem". This is a great studio release with excellent compositions (particularly "The Bride"). The fabulous all-star line-up features an amazing cast of characters - John Surman, Dudu Pukwana, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, Harry Beckett, Marc Charig, Alan Skidmore, Mongezi Feza, Mike Osborne, Ronnie Beer, Nick Evans and Malcolm Griffiths. Available on both high quality vinyl LP for $20. and on CD for $15. 25. ALBERT AYLER - New York Eye And Ear Control (ESP/Abraxas 1016) It isn't strictly an Albert Ayler album, but still a very interesting collaborative and freely improvised soundtrack project for Michael Snow's film of the same name. Recorded in July 1964 with Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray. Liner notes, photos and more... digitally remastered from the original tapes. CD reissue for $15. 26. ALBERT AYLER - Spirits Rejoice (ESP/Abraxa 1020) Recorded in 1965 at Judson Hall, NYC, with Donald Ayler (trumpet), Call Cobbs (harpsichord), Henry Grimes & Gary Peacock (basses), and Sonny Murray (drums). Cobbs' harpsichord conjures up the spirit world in Ayler's most directly spiritual statement. CD reissue for $15. 27. ERIC DOLPHY - Iron Man (Get Back 2009) Eric Dolphy was a true original with his own distinctive styles on alto, flute and bass clarinet and these are classic recordings in any form and constitute some of the most brilliant work of the early '60s avant-garde. 'Iron Man' is every bit essential and it also clearly anticipates the detailed, abstract sound paintings of Dolphy's masterwork - 'Out to Lunch'. In large part the program is weighted here toward Dolphy's originals: "Iron Man", "Burning Spear" and the shorter "Mandrake" - all have outside themes, are full of Dolphy's trademark wide interval leaps and playful sense of dissonance. Featuring vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis, trumpeter Woody Shaw, flutist Prince Lasha, alto saxist Sonny Simmons and soprano sax player Clifford Jordan. Original artwork & high quality vinyl LP only reissue for $15. 28. CHARLES MINGUS - The Jazz Experiments Of Charlie Mingus (Get Back 2008) Originally released on two 10-inch records called 'Jazzical Moods', this is one of Mingus best records from the '50s. These 1954 sessions include the work of John LaPorta, Teo Macero, Thad Jones, Jackson Wiley and Clem De Rosa creating a cool jazz sound. 6 tracks featuring a great take on 'Stormy Weather'. Original artwork and 180 gram high quality vinyl LP for $15. 29. RAHSAAN ROLAND KIRK - Early Roots (Get Back 2007) The first recordings for one of the most exciting saxophone soloists in jazz history. Roland Kirk was an immensely creative artist and quite possibly no other improvising saxophonist has ever possessed a more comprehensive technique (covering every aspect of jazz, from Dixie to free). The music here is mostly blues and ballads with a touch of r&b thrown in. Original artwork and high quality vinyl LP for $15. 30. HAPSHASH & THE COLOURED COAT: Featuring The Human Host And The Heavy Metal Kids (Akarma 204) Their 1968 first classic album (originally on Minit) is something of an electric mayhem and freeform freakout. Art students/designers Michael English and Nigel Weymouth, whose striking graphics were seen on many bright and trippy posters for psychedelic clubs like the UFO and Middle Earth in London, were the creative talent behind this band along with DJ and manager Guy Stevens. Not far from what the Godz were creating in NYC, an underrated document of its time. A band like this, incorporating flower power, love and peace, acid and psychedelic rock lifestyle, tainted with freak out, drop out, hippy and underground trends, could not have existed in any other era than the late sixties. The Heavy Metal Kids were the alter ego of the pre-Spooky Tooth group - Art (comprised of Mike Harrison, Greg Ridley, Mike Kellie and Luther Grosvenor) appeared backing. But who was The Human Host? Who knows?!? Incredibly psychedelic original artwork. LP reissue for $20. and CD reissue for $15. RECENT ADDITIONS TO THAT LARGE CD (MOSTLY $10.) SALE LIST: 31. CECIL TAYLOR - Foundation Maeght Nights Vol. 3 (Jazz View 003) Featuring Sam Rivers & Jimmy Lyons on saxes, Andrew Cyrille on drums and the incredible Cecil Taylor on piano. Recorded in France in July of 1969 and probably an illegitimate release, but hey... it's only $10!! (7 for 6 sale) CD 32. JOEL HARRISON - 3+3=7 (Nine Winds 0187) 2 recordings of 3 guitarists meeting 3 skinmen/percussionists in LA & SF. Confused? Don't be... just buy and listen to the collision/collaboration of Nels & Alex Cline, Steve Cardenas, Scott Amendola, John Schott & others. (7 for 6 sale) $10 33. JOEL FUTTERMAN/JIMMY LYONS/RICHARD DAVIS/ROBERT ADKINS - Inner Conversations (Ear-Rational 1019) Joel Futterman is one those unsung giants of avant-jazz piano who continues to astound audiences and listeners when they finally get a chance to witness his powerful playing. A Chicago native who spent a couple of years with the AACM and now lives in Virginia, he blew minds at the Vision Fest here a few years back. This cd features an explosive quartet with Cecil Taylor's long-standing late alto sax great - Jimmy Lyons, who passed on not too much later, master bassist Richard Davis and Joel's long-time drummer - Robert Adkins. This cd includes the entire 'Inneraction Suite' lp from 1984, plus another half hour of Joel's intense solo piano work from 1988. (7 for 6 sale) $10 34. JOE FONDA - From the Source (Konnex 5075) Featuring Anthony Braxton on numerous saxes & clarinets, Herb Robertson on trumpets, Brenda Bufalino tap dancing & narration, Vickie Dodd on vocals, Joe Fonda on bass & compositions and Grisha Alexiev on drums. A long lost studio gem from one of our favorite bassists - the ever inspired and hard working - Joe Fonda. What is truly amazing here is how well everyone involved works together and is an equal part of the entire seamless journey - the singing, narration and tap dancing are especially well chosen. (7 for 6 sale) $10 35. DICK GRIFFIN - The Eighth Wonder & More (Konnex 5059) Featuring Sam Rivers, Clifford Jordan & Bill Saxton on saxes & flute, Ron Burton, Hubert Eves or Donald Smith on piano, Cecil McBee or Calvin Hill on bass, Warren Smith, Freddie Waits, Billy Hart & others on drums & percussion and Dick Griffin on trombone and compositions. I recall Mr. Griffin from the Sam Rivers Big Band in the late 70's and a couple of fine records he did as a leader from that same time. This is a reissue of his Strata East lp from 1974, plus another 24 minutes of an unreleased session probably recorded around that same time. (7 for 6 sale) $10 36. JOHN BUTCHER - London and Cologne Saxophone Solos (Rastacan 026) Marvelous solo soprano sax solos recorded from 1994-1996 at various locations, both in the studio and live. Along with Evan Parker, John Butcher is another saxist who works wonders in the solo setting. (7 for 6 sale) $10 37. BILL HORVITZ - Solo Electric Guitar & Compositions for 11 Piece Ensemble (Ear-Rational 1027) Half solo electric guitar and half early downtown ensemble featuring an impressive line-up with Elliott Sharp, Herb Robertson, George Cartwright, Jason Hwang, Myra Melford, Vincent Chancey, Evan Gallagher, Alex Lodico, Marion Brandis, Dave Hofstra and Bobby Previte. Bill Horvitz, along with brother Wayne, was one of the early pioneers of the downtown scene. An experimental/jazz/rock electric guitarist and the original leader of The President, which Wayne soon took over. I recall a solo set from the early 80's in which Bill coaxed subtle and odd sounds from his guitar-in-lap with salt shaker and other utensils. His solo playing here also sounds like a focused display of strange fragmented sounds which tell a variety of short stories. He only made one solo guitar record (from 1979) and appeared on few platters from that same period of time - a trio date with Butch Morris & J.A. Deane from 1886. These solo guitar pieces were recorded in 1989 and the ensemble works were live at Roulette in December or 1986. These two longer works have a few layers of interlocking parts, fractured grooves and twisted ongoing solos. (7 for 6 sale) $10 38. GLENN BRANCA - Symphony No. 1 (Tonal Plexus) (ROIR/USA) Music in four movements for multiple guitars, keyboards, brass and percussion. Equally primitive, primal and riveting! (7 for 6 sale) $10 39. SOFT MACHINE - Volume One (One Way) Their first legitimate offering was one of the finest, weirdest and most intriguing albums of 1968 - it sounded like nothing else! Their personnel featured Kevin Ayers on deep toned lead vocals & electric bass, Mike Ratledge on fuzz organ and Robert Wyatt on high-pitched lead vocals & drums. One continuous work with amazing solos from each member, mesmerizing repeating vibrations and memorable tunes which are impossible to forget. They opened for Jimi Hendrix on his first American tour and also blew minds like the Experience did, by jamming at length. (7 for 6 sale) $10 40. THE BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE - self/titled (Camera Obscura 040) Sort of legendary, but mostly little known psychedelic guitar/bass/drums trio from deserts of Arizona and led by uno Jesus Acedo. They made a few great albums for the deceased Reckless label in the mid-eighties and then disappeared back into obscurity. This cd includes songs from their albums, as well as some unreleased material. It is an all instrumental offering and features lots of fine psych guitar noodling, both electric and acoustic. Time to toke up and groove into bliss. (7 for 6 sale) $10 41. HERBIE HANCOCK - Empyrean Isles (Blue Note; USA) Featuring a stellar quartet with Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. 1999 RVG remasters with two extra cuts. (7 for 6 sale) $10 42. HENRY THREADGILL - Makin' A Move (Columbia) Four songs with the Very Very Circus group [Brandon Ross, M Taylor, Ed Cherry, EJ Rodriguez, Marcus Rojas & Pheeroan AkLaff]; 1 track with Myra Melford, James Emery, Brandon Ross, Ed Cherry and 1 track with Michelle Kinney, Diedre Murray & Akua Dixon. Produced by Bill Laswell.
