BURNT SUGAR/BUTCH MORRIS/PETE COSEY/MELVIN GIBBS - The Rites
(Avantgroid 0301) Third fantastic release from Greg Tate's incredible
fifteen piece jazz/funk/rock ensemble, cleverly conducted by Butch
Morris, inspired by Stravinsky's classic "Rites of Spring" and
featuring very special guests Pete Cosey (Miles' main guitar wailer
on 'Agartha' & 'Pangea') and electric bass god Melvin Gibbs.
Although the instrumentation includes four guitars, two bassists, two
strings, two voices, two drums, trumpet, flute & keyboardist, the
only other more well known players are Flip Barnes (trumpet) and
Okkyung Lee (3rd cd this month w/ our fave cellist). Over the past
couple of years and since his long stay teaching in Turkey, Butch
Morris has been working closely with his own moderate sized ensemble,
as well as this great local sensation called Burnt Sugar. Butch is
an incredible conductor and has really refined both of these
ensembles which overlap with a few players and their recent
residencies at the Bowery Poetry Club, Tonic, the Knit and Joe's Pub,
just keep getting better and better. 'The Rites' swirls with immense
waves, an inner fire and free-flowing yet magically connected
subliminal spirits. There are layers of interconnected lines which
seem free at first, yet Butch's control or vision gives this a unique
clarity. There are quotes from Stravinsky's classic piece which
float through and occasionally punctuate things in a few sections.
That familiar opening phrase from 'The Rites of Spring' get a
sensuous, bluesy vibe in one section, almost as if Jimi Hendrix were
jamming with the Gil Evans Orchestra. For those of you that need
that lead guitar fix, Cosey doesn't kick in until section seven of
the eight tracks. And he does kick in hard here, it sure do feel so
good too! In any case, 'The Rites' works just right from beginning
to the end as one motherf***ing sublime feast for the senses.
CD release for $16.

LUCKY PETERSON With BILL LASWELL & JEROME "BIGFOOT" BRAILEY - Black
Midnite Sun (Birdology/Dreyfus) Absolutely smoking blues record from
this consumate lifelong singer/guitarist/organist. (Hey! his 1st
single, the Willie Dixon produced hit "1-2-3-4" saw him performing on
the Ed Sullivan and Tonite shows on Hammond B3 at age 6!) Two
original tunes are cunningly placed amidst a range of rave-up
bluesified versions of tunes like James Brown's "Talking Loud And
Saying Nothing", Chester Burnett's "Smokestack Lightning", Sly
Stone's "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa" and other classic
chestnuts - he even redeems the Mick Jagger solo hit "Lucky In Love"!
(Laswell produced the original as well as this entire new recording).
As for the band on this record, the Laz is relaxed, upfront and
havin' fun on this (he spent his professional youth crisscrossing
the "chitlin" circuit in R&B bands in the '70s before coming to New
York and falling in with baa-a-ad company like Giorgio Gomelsky,
Daevid Allen, Fred Frith, John Zorn et al.) and he's assembled an
all-star line-up for this recording: funk beatmeister Bigfoot
Brailey, Graham Haynes, Henry Threadgill, Jesse Dulman, and Alex J
Harding. Warning: You probably won't take this off your machine, it's
infectious!
CD release for $15

RHYS CHATHAM - An Angel Moves Too Fast to See [3 CD set] (Table of
the Elements 57) Packaged in a beautiful heavy-duty box, one of the
most impressive Table releases to date! At first glance, New
York-born composer Rhys Chatham might have seemed unlikely to alter
the DNA of rock; a classically trained musician, Chatham was piano
tuner for Glenn Gould and La Monte Young, student of Young and Morton
Subotnick, a protégée of Tony Conrad, and in 1971, while still in his
teens, founder of the highly influential experimental music program
at the Kitchen in lower Manhattan. Nevertheless, it was Rhys Chatham
who first applied multiple electric guitars to extended-duration,
overtone-drenched minimalism. This amalgamation of the intellectual
experimentalism and textural sophistication of the avant-garde with
the rhythmic brashness and visceral punch of punk rock produced a
raucous, ecstatic new type of urban music that energized the downtown
New York scene of the late 1970's and early 1980's, a music whose
influence can be heard in the subsequent work of the many luminaries
who participated in Chatham's ensembles, including Glenn Branca and
members of Sonic Youth, Mars, Band of Susans and the Swans. A
comprehensive 3-disc retrospective, 'An Angel Moves Too Fast to See'
includes all of Chatham's major 'minimal' pieces, ranging from the
thunderous "Two Gongs" (1971) and the No-Wave tumult of "Guitar Trio"
(1977) to the brass-based "Massacre on MacDougal Street" (1982) and
the epic, previously unreleased 'An Angel Moves Too Fast to See'
(1989), performed by an orchestra of 100 electric guitars. The
accompanying 136-page book features dozens of never-before-published
photos plus essays by Chatham, Tony Conrad and Lee Ranaldo and
artwork by famed visual artist Robert Longo. Together they present a
portrait of a city and a milieu where, for a moment, the raw, the
sophisticated, the meditative and the danceable merged.
Three CD set in a lavish box for $50.

V.A. - Vision Fest Vision Live (Thirsty Ear 57131) This Blue Series
double disc set comes with a stereo CD and a DVD Audio disc mastered
in 5.1 surround sound. Recorded at last year's Fest it features
Muntu, Dave Burrell/Tyrone Brown, Billy Bang Trio, Doug Ewart

Quartet, Kidd Jordan/Fred Anderson Quartet and the late Peter Kowald
improvising. Review next week?
2 disc set for $20

J.A. GRANELLI & MR. LUCKY - Gigantic (Love Slave 108) Second fabulous
release featuring Dave Tronzo on slide guitar, Jamie Saft on organ &
mellotron, J.A. Granelli on basses and Diego Voglino on drums. Had
this on in the store a couple of weeks ago to check it out and
everyone flipped, begging to get their hands on a copy. Gotta
remember to stop teasing folks and playing cds ahead of street date.
The thing, is nobody plays geetar like Dave Tronzo and since moving
to NY in the early nineties and appearing first on (Wayne Horvitz')
The President's 'Bring Yr Camera', he has only appeared on a handful
of r
ecords since. 'Gigantic' is a greasy, blues drenched, jazz/rock
swamp delight. Dave's great gritty slide guitar and Jamie's fatback
organ pump hard over funky, shuffle-boil, slow-burning rhythm team
throughout. Tronzo whips out his wah-wah (an ancient device) pedal
on "Happy Pt. 1" and really gets down to business. The title track
is a dreamy, laid back piece with some fine bowed (acoustic) bass and
haunting fuzz-tone solo from Tronzo?!? Granelli wrote all but two of
the ditties on this fine disc, the covers include a touching version
of the Bee Gees' "If I Can't Have You" with lovely vocals by Vanessa
Saft and a swell take, laid back of the standard "Pipe Dreams".
Pretty righteous and eternity cool, always a blast to hear Dave
Tronzo doing his thang once again.
CD release for $14.

EARL HOWARD/PARABOLA ARTS ENSEMBLE - Strong Force (Mutable Music
17511) This was recorded live at Merkin Hall in November of 1999 and
features Mr. Howard on synthesizer, Anthony Davis on piano, Anne
LeBaron on harp, Ernst Reijseger on cello and Gerry Hemingway on
drums. Earl Howard usually plays alto sax and synth and has worked
with Denman Maroney, Frank Gratowski and Mark Dresser, as well as
doing engineering work for Ned Rothenberg and a number of Erstwhile
recordings. The line-up on 'Strong Force' is a unique quintet of
musicians that bridge the gap between composed and improvised music,
modern jazz and contemporary classical, electric (Mr. Howard) and
acoustic instruments (everyone else) hence this work blends all of
these worlds in its own way. Commencing with suspense filled
fragments, spacious and ethereal, distant synth floating over dark
clouds of minimal piano, eerie rubbed percussion, ghost-like cello
threads and ultra-subtle acoustic harp flutters. Each musician takes
turn shaping and/or navigating the current. Upon entering this
cautious dream world, the spirits start to dance more quickly like
dancing flames. The often overlooked and under-recorded harpist,
Anne LeBaron, sounds especially magical with her exquisitely nimble
playing. By the second section, the density and mysteriousness
increases. The work is like a story that unfolds slowly and sweeps
us away as it organically evolves. Each takes their turn as they
solo or push the other players in their direction. Occasionally duos
or trios emerge as different combinations of players react to each
other and shift the current into shallower or deeper waters. A most
impressive, extremely well crafted and nicely recorded work overall.
CD release for $14.

GRAHAM COLLIER - Charles River Fragments (Jazzprint 123) Performed by
The Jazz Ensemble which includes Art Themen, Chris Biscoe, Geoff
Warren & Mark Lockheart on saxes; Henry Lowther, Steve Waterman &
Patrick White on trumpets; Hugh Fraser & Bill Mee on trombones; Andy
Grappy on tuba, Ed Speight on guitar, Pete Saberton on piano, Dudley
Phillips on bass and John Marshall on drums. Our favorite British
jazz composer returns once more with his 15th recording released in
the nineties, which include eleven reissues on Disconforme from the
early seventies onwards. Since retiring from his professorship in
the UK and moving to Spain, Graham travels the globe doing workshops
in Australia, as well as uptown at Julliard and has had his music
played by ensembles from different countries. "Hackney Five" (1995)
begins our journey with a cushion of electric bass waves, John
Marshall's (Soft Machine/Nucleus) ever amazing, hard swinging and
ultra supportive drums with breathtaking layers of horn tapestry on
top. Hugh Fraser takes his first of numerous extraordinary, crafty
trombone solos here, as does Steve Waterman on trumpet another great
soloist. Both the rich, complex composing and intricate playing make
this piece another winner for the consistently enduring body of work
that Mr. Collier has amassed. "Charles River Fragments" is a ten
part work dedicated to Charles Mingus, another fine bassist and
composer like Graham, and Herb Pomeroy, Graham's teacher and guru up
at the Berklee Music School in Boston. This long work also features
fascinating layers of composed sections with more superb soloing from
Art Themen, Ed Speight, Chris Biscoe, Pete Saberton and an
outstanding segment featuring incredible playing of John Marshall,
one of England's finest drummers for over thirty years and currently
a member of SoftWorks (w/ Elton Dean, Alan Holdsworth & Hugh Hopper).
Graham does a great job of providing crafty composing which always
supports and surrounds the soloists just right, as the great rhythm
team pushes them higher and higher. Brilliant!
British import CD release for $16.

ALTERATIONS - Viola Enough! (Atavistic UMS 239) A rather disturbing
and exhilarating gem of British improv insanity at its most extreme
extracted from four gigs in 1979-1981 and featuring Peter Cusask on
guitars & feed back, David Toop on guitars, flutes, bird calls,
whistles, Steve Beresford on piano, assorted keyboards, toys, and
Terry Day on drums, toys, balloons & alto sax and everyone dabbling
in even more instruments too numerous to mention. I have always had
a fondness for the unpredictable and occasionally hilarious antics of
Steve Beresford and his partners in communion/crime. Alterations
seems to be the epitome of this ridiculous spirit. The opening track
here erupts with sirens, guitar(?) feedback and other baffling noises
and a goofy rock beat. Rather primal and a bit like Shockabilly in
their fun-filled approach to keep us all wellSshocked or amused.
Child-like nursery rhyme piano, wind-up toys, jewelry case music
boxes, overblown flutings, schmaltzy and inside-the-piano segments,
bird calls, cartoon-like antics, quotes from movie themes and
standards, punkisk noise & sound blasts, obnoxious at points and
hilarious as well. Some of these sounds are impossible to figure out
and they move through different segments at a quick pace, keeping us
and their live audience entertained throughout. This could easily
pass for a gig at Studio Henry in the early 80's with Chadbourne,
Zorn, Tom Cora and Kramer, those gigs were also a blast. This wacky
treasure is about an hour long and is a complete joyride throughout.
Another fantastic experience awaits you from Atavistic's wonderful
Unheard Music Series. (And a MannyLunch "Four Thumbs UP!)
CD release for $14.

KEN FILIANO - subvenire (Nine Winds 223) Contrabassist extraordinaire
Ken Filiano moved here from L.A. and become quite an active an in
demand bassist. Ken spent nearly two decades in L.A. working with a
long list of great players, like Bobby Bradford, John Carter, Don
Preston, Vinny Golia and Rova. Since moving here he also keeps
pretty busy in numerous projects with Dom Minasi, Fred Hess and Steve
Swell. This is Ken's first solo bass effort and it is a long time
coming, mostly improvised, yet completely focused with one piece
written by Bobby Bradford. Right from the first sound, we are
treated to a dense, rich drone of bowed bass on "water down stone", a
somber, dark and dreamy work, the rich sound of Ken's bass filling
the entire room. Ken is shown on the back with stick going through
his bass strings and he is playing on those sticks and strings with
another set of stick. He sounds as if he is also doing this on some
of these tracks as there are a few things going on at once. On
"relay" he walks quickly and plucks hard all over the bass at a fast
pace, telling a frenzied story, bending notes in different directions
as he moves around the neck. "lucerne" has a few layers of bowed
basses which drift together in a hypnotic dream-world. "non
sequitur" continues this dreamy vibe with the (layers of) buzzing
echoed bass fragments. This entire release has a overall haze to it,
sort of lonely, yet also mesmerizing in the way it creates a land of
floating spirits. Ken
Filiano will perform in a bass duo with Francois Grillot here at DMG
for free on Sunday July 6th at 7pm, you do not want to miss this one.
CD release for $14.

LAURA ANDEL ORCHESTRA - Somnambulist (Red Toucan 9322) Ms. Andel
moved here after going to school in Boston (NEC I believe) a couple
of years ago and has worked hard at putting together a fine large
local ensemble to play her distinctive and challenging music. Her
debut release features the long title work performed by her NY
orchestra and two shorter works performed the Jazz Composers Alliance
from Boston. The NY ensemble features a fine cast local players and
unusual instrumentation, many of who we've come to know and some of
who have played here at DMG. The NY Orchestra consists of Jamie
Baum, Oscar Noriega, Sam Furnace, Taylor Ho Bynum & Julie Kalu on
horns/reeds; Ursel Schlict on piano, Carl Maguire on accordion,
Pamelia on theremin, Stephanie Griffin on viola, Danny Tunick on
vibes, Kenta Nagai on fretless guitar, Rueben Radding on double bass
and Tatsuya Nakatani on drums. All three works were recorded live
and Elliott Sharp recorded the title track and mastered the entire
cd. A somnambulist is a sleepwalker and this is an apt title for this
fascinating, mysterious, dream world work. "Somnambulist" features a
spacious and suspenseful blend of bowed vibes or percussion, a
disembodied voice, floating horn spirits, a throbbing bass pulse, an
intricate tapestry of piano, accordion, vibes and viola and some
scary sustained el. guitar. This strange dreamscape seems closer to
Xenakis or Penderecki than to any jazz composer I can think of.
Laura uses space and deals with textures in a most careful way, as
each kernel of sound is there to evoke a specific vibe. The overall
structure or underlying thread becomes more apparent as it moves
through interconnected sections. An excellent debut and a bit scary
a times. Laura Andel seems to be on her way to having her pieces
performed at Miller Theatre or Merkin Hall in the future. We can
only hope she gets the recognition she certainly deserves.
CD release for $14.

SCOTT FIELDS ENSEMBLE - 96 Gestures [3 CD set] (CRI Blueshift 90438)
Featuring Scott on electric guitar, Joseph Jarman on alto sax &
flute, Francois Houle on clarinet, Myra Melford on piano, Rob Mazurek
on cornet, Carrie Bolo on vibes, Robbie Lynn Hunsinger on oboe &
English horn, Matt Turner on cello, Jason Reobke & Hans Sturm on
basses and Damon Short & Dylan Van Der Schyff on drums. I have
always dug Wisconsin based guitarist and composer Scott Fields from
the dozen or so fine releases he has out, always choosing her
collaborators with care. When this wonderful triple cd came out in
2001, it went pretty much unnoticed, since CRI was in distribution
limbo and now is completely kaput. I didn't know that this cd
existed until a customer tried to order it from us a couple of months
back. "96 Gestures" is for twelve musicians and utilizes a conductor
to make this complex piece work. Each gesture is a theme which can
be played in a variety of combinations. CD 1 begins like one Anthony
Braxton's Ghost Trance Pieces, except that it moves very quickly into
a more frenzied, yet focused swarm of swirling lines. Different
sub-groups of players connect and trade ideas in a flurry of
activity, when it becomes too dense, it stops for a bit and then
slowly the subgroups or combinations begin to swirl together once
more. The conductor also uses hand signals and signs to indicate
certain gestures, not unlike one of Zorn's game pieces. Some
sections are very quiet and ghost-like solos drift through the air.
There sections where one person will solo with rhythm team tightly
supporting them, as the other players appear to play counter ideas
which connect at times in an obvious way and sometimes not so.
These three cd are partially written with much room for improv, yet
everything moves organically as it unfolds. There are a number of
somber, delicate sections, as well as sections where the magic of
serious listening of all involved players makes for tight connections
which move together. Everyone gets a chance to solo and help
navigate the rapids. Over three hours of fascinating music making
that falls between the cracks of category - jazz, classical,
progressive influences are all in there somewhere. Wonderful on many
levels. Out-of-Print but SALE PRICED (originally $35)!
Three CD set for $20

A HALF DOZEN FINE NEW RELEASES FROM THE GREAT LEO LABEL:

FRANK GRATKOWSKI QUARTET - Spectral Reflections (Leo 374) Featuring
Frank on alto sax & clarinets, Wolter Weirbos on trombone, Dieter
Manderscheid on bass and Gerry Hemingway on drums. Although the
bassist here, Dieter, is a new name for me, Mr. Gratkowski has been
playing here for the past decade and both times I caught him, he
knocked me out. Wolter Weirbos has also been touring here with the
ICP Orchestra for the past decade plus and the unstoppable Gerry
Hemingway is one of the best drummers and bandleaders around here and
has played with way too many great units to mention, but the decade
he spent with the phenomenal Braxton Quartet, placed him in the
center of the cyclone of the best modern quartet of that period.
'Spectral Reflections' was recorded (live?) at Loft in Cologne,
Germany in November of 2001 and has incredible sound. This is music
is ultra tight and filled with odd breath-like sounds, even Gerry has
tube attached to his drum to blow into. Notes are often twisted
inside-out, but remain together in sharp, tight, nuggets. Frank's
writing is pretty demanding, yet still streamlined. Bowed bass and
clarinet play their odd harmonies together as Gerry's intricate
percussive punctuation outlines the skeletal structure, the trombone
also adds occasional well selected spice. This music is somewhat
Braxton-like in the way certain structure or sub-divisions overlap
and inter-connect. Some sections build to intense, yet fractured
swinging episodes. Frank's amazing clarinet and Wolter's bone are a
perfect match outside and inside approaches and consistently match
wits quite well. There are many magical sections where the sax and
trombone are playing strange sounds which fit perfectly with equally
weird bowed percussion and arco bass, evoking cosmic spirits.
CD release for $15.

ULLMANN/STEVENS/FONDA/BENNINK - Conference Call/Variations on a
Master Plan (Leo 371) Featuring Gebhard Ulmann on bass clarinet,
tenor & soprano saxes, Michael Jefry Stevens on piano, Joe Fonda on
bass and Han Bennink on drums. This was recorded live in Munich in
March of 2001 and has superb sound. I recall Gebhard from a fine cd
on Soul Note from a while ago, as well as another half dozen releases
out on Nabel and Between the Lines. Stevens and Fonda have been
playing together in different bands for about two decades and have
numerous releases out on Leo. Conference Call is the band or project
name and the aforementioned Soul Note cd was that band with a
different drummer, now replaced by that wacky Dutch dynamo, Han
Bennink from ICP. Everyone contributes one or two pieces but Han
plus they do cover by Nina Rota and one group improv as well.
Michael's "Quiet" opens with an exquisite melody and enchanting bass
clarinet. Han plays incredibly well, both swinging intensely one
moment and playing magically around the pulse simultaneously. Soon
the rambunctious piano and drums take off together for the
stratosphere with Mr. Fonda also walking furiously at the center and
then taking an incredibly crafty bass solo, with also working closely
and both players shining together. Fonda's "Circle" is a haunting,
somber piece for smoky bass clarinet and delicate accompaniment, with
Han also buzzing beautifully around the enchanting piano, eventually
working its way through "Variations on a Theme by Debussy", another
long and winding work which moves through hills and valleys and takes
us along for a great ride. "Improvisation No. 2" shows what this
grand quartet does best, by spinning a web of connected spirits which
fly, sail, jump and erupt together as one great force/quartet.
Concluding with Joe Fonda's "Song for My Mother" which is a perfect
closing piece with a transcendent gospelish theme and Han once again
providing that marvelous swirling mass of spiritual energy.
CD release for $15.

WALLY SHOUP/PAUL FLAHERTY/THURSTON MOORE/CHRIS CORSANO - Live at
Tonic (Leo 369) Both alto saxist Wally Shoup (Seattle based) and
tenor/alto saxist Paul Flaherty (New England somewhere), are
under-recognized, yet legendary figures to those know about such
things (like some of us) and have some half dozen plus releases out
each, neither is a youngster. Our pal, downtown guitar hero from
Sonic Youth, Thurston certainly needs no intro, while Boston
area-based drummer Chris Corsano used to work the door at Tonic and
has also become the drummer to watch/hear in recent years. This
powerful, free-form blasting session took place at our favorite local
club last September. This is a powerful, often frenzied fest of free
improv noise which explodes from the first minute and occasionally
lets up. Both saxists have well worn tones and have a wealth of
energy and resourcefulness and do an amazing job of matching wits
with the guitar and drums. The three long blasting excursions clock
in at about 73 minutes and are pretty intense and spectacular
throughout, so be patient as your get lost in the swirling mass.
CD release for $15.

JOHN WOLF BRENNAN/PEGGY LEE/DYLAN VAN DER SCHYFF - zero heroes (Leo
373) Swiss-based piano wonder, really does get around and has more
than a dozen releases on various labels, especially Leo. The swell
Vancouver based couple, Peggy Lee on cello and Dylan on drums, also
play in a variety of projects as well and are members of the Now
Orchestra and recently worked well with Michael Moore. 'Zero Heroes'
was recorded live at the Western Front in Vancouver in March of 2002
and is a collection of solos, duos and trios. Brennan plays both
prepared and unprepared piano and melodica on one track. The
mysterious sounds begin on the first track with droning cello,
inside-the-piano rubbing and bowed percussion, creating a strange
dreamscape. "AnywayS" is a melancholy and enchanting piece written
by Brennan with a nice hypnotic haze. John's solo offering "Be Flat"
is a mesmerizing swirling piece with the pedal work adding a
shimmering touch. "Powerful Stranger" is piano/cello duo which
features eerie, drifting, droning sounds and distant rumbling inside
the piano. This is a thoroughly enchanting journey through the
trio's never-ending, slowly unfolding world of sounds. Another
treasure from Leo's massive and ever-expanding catalogue.
CD release for $15.

AKI TAKASE/RUDI MAHALL - The Dessert (Leo 370) Ms. Takase plays piano
and is known for her longtime partnership with Alex Schlippenbach,
plus duos with Konrad Bauer and a recent trio called Dempa. Mr.
Mahall plays bass & contrabass clarinets and works with a number of
musicians on the Jazz4Ever label. 'The Dessert' consists of 17
relatively short pieces, all but one under six minutes. This the
third Leo cd I've reviewed today with a (European) bass clarinetist
involved, hmmm. Aki and Rudi wrote every other piece here and often
deal with quirky, humorous tunes. Challenging little pieces with
intricate, gnarly and quick moving parts. A snippet of near Dixieland
is followed by a flash of intense and lightning speed piano runs.
Both players enjoy pushing each other threw a variety of quick paced
hoops, playing their tight, difficult lines together. Like the title
of this release, most of the pieces are named after deserts, so we
get a variety of treats. A few of these tunes are charming, melodic
little gems, joyous and child-like. There a few unexpected twists
and turns, but mostly this treasure chest of desert delights is a
certainly worth savoring. Yummy!
CD release for $15.

SLAVA GANELIN & ESTI KENAN OFRI - birds of passage (Leo 366) Mr.
Ganelin plays piano and synth and has led the legendary Russian free
improv Ganelin Trio for a quarter century, while Ms. Ofri is a most
impressive vocalist as well as a choreographer, was born in Italy and
raised in Israel. She sung the lead role in Berio's "Ofanim" and has
worked with orchestras around the world. This is their second
release as a duo and it was recorded live in Jerusalem in July of
2001. "From a Nest" begins with quiet, somber piano and eerie synth
and occasional percussion. It takes a while for Esti's voice to
enter, as Slava sets the mood with his mysterious synth/piano drama.
Esti uses her natural sounding voice like an actress telling a story,
working her way through a variety of characters and evolving scenery.
On the second long piece, "Gravity", Slava plays more percussion as
Esti takes her time to invoke a few different spirits, this piece
evolves very slowly, but does have a number of quietly intriguing
moments.
CD release for $15.

RAOUL BJORKENHEIM - 14 Days (Ltd Ed. self-produced CDR) Raoul has run
off only 20 copies - a DMG exclusive! - of this collection of solo
guitar pieces, a behind-the-scenes snapshot of compositions in flux,
both electric and acoustic. No wasted moments here - a perfect
marriage of beauty and oddness, from the driving force behind the
brilliant Scorch Trio, one of the high points of last years releases
(a 2nd album is on the way!) and the classic dark fusion group
Krakatua of a decade ago. In slimline case with photopcard with
hand-lettered disc. Do we have to tell you not to dally?
CDR release for $11

A TRIBUTE TO CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND - Neon Meate Dream of
a Octofish (Animal World 020) Featuring Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Jad
Fair, Trumans Water, Thurston Moore & Byron Coley, Miss Murgatroid,
Don Fleming, Azaila Snail plus another dozen lesser known bands. Got
this great promo in the mail and was pretty much impressed by the
consistency of the twenty tracks in the tribute, considering that
I've heard of only a third of these folks. The Captain was a true
original, a completely unique vocalist/composer/lyricist and a
difficult bandleader. Along with Frank Zappa, an occasional
collaborator, the Captain was one the most influential of all
avant/rock or progressive visionaries. A number of former members of
the different Magic Bands still stand out today, especially a new
version with Gary Lucas, Denny Walley, Mark Boston & John "Drumbo"
French, who've played in LA and London recently, without the Captain
who is retired and in ill health. Although many of these songs are
genuinely weird, certainly idiosyncratic to the Captain's vision and
difficult to play, many of these bands do a wonderful job. Mike Watt
& Nels Cline do "Dirty Blue Gene" with intoxicating zest and
Racebannon do
"Electricity" with stomping psychedelicized power. Jad Fair does a
goofy Velvets-like version of "Too Much Time" and my old pal Azaila
Snail does a hypnotic version of "Abba Zabba". There are a few fine
instrumental renditions, which are even weirder than the originals,
if you can believe that. Brian McMahon (Electric Eels) does a dreamy
job on "I Got Love on Mind", which is from one of those two lame
Beefheart albums, when his label tried to turn him into a corny pop
star. Considering this compilation is 70 minutes long, it flows
together well and is engaging throughout. Captain Beefheart was an
undeniable genius and his strange spirit lives on great tributes such
as this. Dig in!
CD release for $13.

WINGED MIGRATION - Original Soundtrack (Higher Octave 82505)
Featuring three new tracks by Robert Wyatt, a track by Nick Cave,
tracks by Gabriel Yacoub, a cut by A Filetta and all music composed
by Bruno Coulais. Considering that us Canterbury fanatics patiently
await for new material from our favorite singer (of all time) Robert
Wyatt, every few years a gem or two of Robert's appears in an
unlikely place and helps us all on our way through the troubled times
of life on the planet earth. Mr. Wyatt works at a snails pace, so a
full length effort appears once or twice a decade. All we know in
advance is that 'Winged Migration' is a film by Jacques Perrin about
the migration of birds and that this soundtrack attempts to
orchestrate their flight. The great deep voiced rock singer Nick
Cave needs no introduction, but I recall French folk/rock singer
Gabriel Yacoub from his days with a the great (Fairport-like) band
Malicorne. Nick Cave's "To Be By Your Side" opens with a grand,
eloquent Leonard Cohen like ballad, not as bleak as his usual fair.
Robert Wyatt performs "Masters of the Field" with exquisite
orchestral backing, another touching, fragile piece. The mostly
instrumental music interspersed amongst the half dozen vocal songs is
also melancholy and enchanting on its own. Robert does "The Highest
Gander" and it is another dreamy, mystical piece with impressionistic
strings and would fit perfectly on Wyatt's last solo effort 'Shleep'.
All the pieces here fit and flow together nicely in a continuous
unfolding story-like way. Even the (Bulgarian) choirs here are used
well and are endearing as well. It is nice to Robert Wyatt's voice
surrounded by harp, strings and a chorus on "The Red Forest",
certainly a rarity, but it is all too short. A Filetta is a splendid
choir of rich, haunting ethnic male voices and also too brief. It is
followed with another superb choir of equally haunting female voices.
A wide variety of bird chirps also flow through this continuous work
giving it an uplifting quality of the flight of birds. In between
those rare Robert Wyatt full lengths, us committed fans often compile
tracks from collections like this one and eventually put together our
own Wyatt collection, so the search goes on.
CD release for $17

ZGA - The Flight of Infection (Tariff 001) The music of ZGA will mean
nothing to you if you believe in simple musical categories, styles
and generalizations. Comparisons with past and present musical styles
will not be sufficient here. This is mythic music that comes from
hardship, a need to challenge an oppressive state with internal and
external liberation. It would be folly as one living in the so-called
free world to totally identify with what ZGA represents. But one can
try to understand? ZGA is a collection of musicians from the Russian
town of St. Petersburg. After several albums with Chris Cutler's
Recommended/Points East Label, the ensemble decided to move onto
Tariff Records. They have been one of Russia's premier experimental
bands for over a decade. I remember seeing/hearing them at New Music
America in Montreal in 1990 and they all played amplified springs and
sounded a bit like Elliott Sharp's Carbon!?!
CD release for $14.

ALAMAAILMAN VASARAT- Käärmelautakunta (Silence 014) This Finnish
instrumental band, whose name means "The Hammers of Hell", started as
an offshoot of Höyry-Kone, but now H-K is gone and the Hell-Hammers
remain! The band is a six piece unit with dual electric cellos
(played as a hard-rock instrument and sounding like weird metal
guitars), saxes/bass clarinet, trombone/slide trumpet/tuba, pump
organ/grand piano and drums. Their sound is sort of an odd
combination of hyper-charged klezmer/polka performed with metallic
ferocity and with a slightly sinister air ala Univers Zero's 1313.
CD release for $17.

REYNOLS - Rampotanza Ronil Rempelente (Locust 28) The primordial
psychedelic sounds of Argentina's Reynols continue the Met Life
Series with the raw, rhythmically entrancing field recordings of city
workers in Buenos Aires drilling a hole into a busy city street. The
natural response by this mysterious quartet doesn't drill so much as
gleefully massage the head with a monumental freak-out of
onomatopoeia and uber-intonation commandeered by the band's lead
vocalist Miguel Tomasin with the accompaniment of some seriously
spaced-out delay driven tribal percussion, bellowing horn, piano plod
and guitar plunder. Strangely endearing!
CD release for $14.

A WEALTH OF HISTORIC RECORDINGS, REISSUES and RESTOCKS:

MAL WALDRON & STEVE LACY - Live at Dreher Paris, 1981 [4 CD set]
(Hatology 596) Important reissue of two long out-of-print duo
releases which capture this extraordinary duo at the height of the
creative powers. With the recent passing of the fabulous, legendary
jazz pianist, Mal Waldron, this is a most welcome reissue, recorded
over a couple of nights and now available as one complete box set.
Four CD Swiss import reissue set for $33.

JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER - Change (Textile 02) This is the new one from
that weird northern west coast avant/folk/rock octet, who have just
toured Europe and returned with a few copies of this rare import
release. They begin in peaceful folk heaven with acoustic guitar(s),
harmonica, percussion and melancholy drifting vocals. JOMF do a
great job playing dreamy, mildly disturbing psychedelic landscapes
where sounds often manipulated as the float through a slowly evolving
kaleidoscope of soft colors. There is a backwoods tribal quality to
chugging rhythms and the hazy ghost-like images wander through the
scenery. There is a magical alien glue that holds it altogether,
which is hard to describe, but most familiar to former (and current)
stoners like myself. Recorded in May/June 2002. With Jef Brown, Tom
Greenwood, Joshua Stevenson, JillianWieseneck, Michael Henerikson,
Max Lee, John Flaming and Jeez. Elusive import release finally
back-in-stock for those who have been waiting!
CD copies for $16

HANK ROBERTS - Birds of Prey (W&W/JMT 919033) Featuring D.K. Dyson
onlead vocals, Hank Roberts on cello, Mark Lampariello on guitar,
Jerome Harris on el bass and Vinny Johnson on drums. Second splendid
jazz/rock/funk gem from the great cellist Hank Roberts and his fine
crew. Hank Roberts played powerful cello with Bill Frisell and Tim
Berne around this same time, late 80's/early 90's, but showed a
completely different side with his two releases on JMT. He wrote
great, catchy funk/rock songs which featured DK Dyson's strong, sexy
voice. Jerome Harris slaps his bass and Mark L. wails on electric
guitar, surprise, surprise. I admit to really digging this, since
Hank wrote such lovely tunes, also sings swell back-up and plays some
charming cello parts and solos. Everyone here sings some exquisite
backing vocals throughout and every song is a charming gem.
Obviously Hank put a great deal of time and care into these tunes.
CD reissue release for $15.

JOHN McLAUGHLIN TRIO - Live at Royal Albert Hall (W&W/JMT) Featuring
John on acoustic guitar, Trilok Gurtu on ethnic percussion and Kai
Eckhardt on bass. McLaughlin's final great electric band, although
his excellence continues via acoustic guitar in the Remember Shakti
group currently.
CD reissue release for $15.

GREG OSBY - Season of Renewal (W&W/JMT 919 034) Featuring Greg on
alto & soprano saxes, Kevin Eubanks & Kevin McNeal on guitars &
guitar synth, Edward Simon on leyboards, Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Paul
Samuels on drums and Cassandra Wilson & Amina Claudine Myers on
vocals. I don't think I heard this when it first came out in 1989,
but it does sound kinda cool today as M-Base jazz/funk/rock with some
inspired sax and funky beats. The guitar synths and other keyboards
do sound a bit dated, they work well when things don't get too
flashy. Mostly fun, but certainly not amazing.
CD reissue release for $15.

IANNIS XENAKIS - self/titled (Editions RZ 1015/6) [2 CD set] This is
an important Iannis Xenakis collection of historical recordings and
essential works. Disc one consists of the orchestra works and
represents an era of Xenakis' developement of polytope, geometrical,
mathematical, based works from the late 1950's to the 60's in
historical recordings and was previously released on LP except for
"ST/48" which has not previously been released. Disc 1 includes:
"ST/48" (for 48 Instruments, 1959-62); "Le Polytope de Montreal" (for
four Orchestras, 1967); "Nomos Gamma" (for large Orchestra scattered
among the audience, 1967-68); "Terretektorh" (for large Orchestra
scattered among the audience); "Syrmos" (for 18 Strings, 1959);
"Achorripsis" (for 21 Instruments, 1956-57). Disc two includes
"Persepolis 'avec mouvement' version" (electroacoustic music on
8-track tape, 1971); "Polytope de Cluny" (electroacoustic music on
8-track tape, 1972). Regarding the version of "Perspolis" on this
disc: this is the 4th stereo mix of this piece to be released to date
(original Philips LP, then CDs by Fractal and Asphodel). There are 2
versions of the "Persepolis" tapes ("sans mouvement" and "avec
mouvement", Fractal reissued the "sans mouvement" version [is a mix
solicited but ultimately rejected by Edition RZ] and Asphodel
reissued the "avec mouvement" version in a GRM mix by Daniel
Terrugi). So, this is a unique stereo mix, done by Daniel Teige (who
spent 2 years working on it), about 10 minutes shorter than the
Terrugi GRM mix.
2 CD set for $25.

LEO KUPPER - Complete Electronic Works 1961-74 (Sub Rosa 184) This
compact disc highlights Leo Kupper's earliest unique and heretofore
unpublished compositions produced during the 1960's when he was
ardently seeking out structures distinctly applicable to purely
electronic sounds (as opposed to those already revelant instrumental
sounds). Here as elsewhere in the 'Anthology of Noise and Electronic
Music' the publishers feel that the value of this collection lies not
solely in its historical and archival importance but also in its
presentation of alive artistic creations which offer the listener an
inestimable opportunity to rediscover and to re-listen to them. They
are like the fruit of a tree of time past which ripens and matures
ever more, like wine, into time present. These works demonstrate the
first steps undertaken in a field of music whose means of production
today is the norm. In 1961, having terminated his musicology studies,
Leo Kupper left Liège for Brussels where Henri Pousseur had founded
Apelac the first Belgian electronic music studio. By that time,
centres for music research such as those in Cologne, Paris and Milan
had already produced works of experimental music, where pioneers were
forging new and diverse routes in electronic music, 'musique
concrète' and electro-vocal music. In electronic music, works such as
'Studien' by Karlheinz Stockhausen presupposed the use of oscillators
and electronic filters; 'musique concrète's' point of departure, as
in 'Etudes Aux Chemins De Fer' by Pierre Schaeffer, was the
microphone and recordings of all manner and duration of events from
the physical and external sound world; electronic-vocal music, such
as 'Ommagio A Joyce' by Luciano Berio, stemmed from innovative vocal
and phonetic research; and concurrently with these developments,
Henri Pousseur, in the Apelac studio, was composing 'Trois Visages De
Liège'.
CD release for $15.

PETE NAMLOOK & BILL LASWELL - Outland 3 (Fax/AW 027) The third of the
successfull 4 volume Outland series. This time connects the old
continent -- Afrika -- and its incredible influence on our music with
the vast dimensions of a world beyond our comprehension. Ancient
drumming meets the music of our times and combines these styles to a
fusion of ethno-electronic music beyond the topics of pure Ethnic
music, Techno, Dub and Ambient. Soundscapes including Bill Laswell at
the low and the distorted end as well as Pete Namlook using new,
powerful machines to create the soundtrack to a multidimensional
world.
CD release for $15.

PETE NAMLOOK & KLAUS SCHULZE - The Dark Side of the Moog 3 (Fax/AW
008) Already the third Namlook-Schulze collaboration and still
different from the rest. This time a combination of alien choirs and
arias, typical Schulze chords and basses, Namlook at guitar, spacey
sounds and electro-minimalist beat-oriented parts which all build a
climax in part IV. Go on your one hour journey with Phantom Heart
Brother and don't forget toS
CD release for $15.

CHURCHILLS/JERICHO JONES - Junkies, Monkeys and Donkeys (Hed-Arzi) An
official reissue from the master tapes of the Churchills' self-titled
1968 psychedelic classic. This includes 6 bonus tracks taken from
singles and EPs. A year or so later, they got signed to A&M(!) and
began moving in a psych/hard rock vein, which is what Junkies,
Monkeys and Donkeys documents. This includes 7 bonus tracks. Both are
classics of their kind and really good, and these have both been
remastered. If you knew what the originals of these go far, you would
quickly realize that $24.00 for these two including bonus tracks is a
mere pittance!
