AMPLIFY 2002 [V.A.] - balance [7 CD/1 DVD Box Set] (Erstwhile Records 033-040) An immensely impressive and rather overwhelming box set from our favorite minimalist/electronic/improv label. This is a thorough documentation of the Amplify Festival which took place at Star Pine's Cafe in Tokyo in October of 2002, including 8 of 12 sets plus studio sessions, an all-star seven guitar ensemble plus a 108 minute DVD with a film by Jonas Leddington and 5.1 surround sound audio mixes by the participants. The featured sonic sorcerers include Keith Rowe, Otomo Yoshihide, Gunter Muller, Sachiko M, Thomas Lehn, Toshimaru Nakamura, Christof Kurzmann, Taku Sugimoto, Ami Yoshida, Marcus Schmickler, Tetuzi Akiyama and Burkhard Stangl. Over seven hours in length plus a handsomely designed case/cover with a lovely 52 page, full-color booklet with photography by noted Japanese new music journalist Yuko Zama and twenty separate essays by many of the people involved in the festival. Most rewarding, this will take us a long time to absorb.
Limited edition of 800, 7 CD & 1 DVD box set for $160.

ERIK FRIEDLANDER - Maldoror (Brassland) Outstanding solo cello performance debut from the Masada String Trio, Bar Kohkba Chamber Masada, Sylvie Courvoisier's Abaton Trio, Tzadik recording artist and multi-bandleader, Erik Friedlander. "His approach is avant-garde to be sure, but far from atonal. In fact, tonality and sonance are primary concerns here, allowing the nuance of language to come through the spaces and polytonal interactions with the written work. For all its intensity, it is nearly shockingly accessible, even with its far-flung and dramatic sense of dynamics. This is recording was created to be listened to as one work, the individual selections all contribute to a haunting, hypnotic whole and doesn't really exist well outside their framework as such. Nonetheless, this is a brilliantly conceived and executed recording, alluringly musical and decadently humorous in places." - All Music Guide blurb. A highly anticipated gem and review by your truly soon.

WILLIAM PARKER With ROY CAMPBELL/DANIEL CARTER/ALAN SILVA - Fractured Dimensions (FMP 122) Featuring the almighty William Parker on double bass, Roy Campbell on trumpet & flugelhorn, Daniel Carter on various reeds & trumpet and Alan Silva on synth & piano. This amazing live set was recorded at the Total Music Meeting in Berlin in November of 1999. Space, sound color, interaction, independence, transparency and a tremendous sense of propulsion, like a pocket chamber orchestra on the gallop, the band that illuminates these «Fractured Dimensions« is a far-reaching one. Originally billed was the New York quartet known as Other Dimensions In Music, with bassist William Parker, trumpeter Roy Campbell, reed-man and intermittent second trumpeter Daniel Carter and drummer Rashid Bakr. Bakr«s unavailability led to the fortuitous last-minute substitution of Alan Silva, the expatriate Bermudan/American bassist-turned-synthesizer player and a near-total transformation of the group dynamic.
Seldom has the old free music axiom «change one man and you change the music« been so dramatically demonstrated. New worlds open up to "other planes of there" Sun Ra said - as Silva frames, tints and shades the improvisation with his keyboard colors (subtle pastels, lambent watercolors, luminescent gobs of day-glo), creates a real sense of orchestration-in-action with strings and percussion samples or hurtles toward the center of the whirled interplay. At all times his contribution encourages a great clarity in the music, where you can hear every blossoming detail, even at the most delirious speeds.... - Steve Lake

POLYSOFT With HUGH HOPPER & ELTON DEAN - Tribute To Soft Machine: Live at Le Triton 2002 (Le Triton 3506) Hugh gave us a copy of this in August and we've been waiting with baited [sic] breath to get this in from France! The basic quartet [Collectif Polysons] of Francois Merville drums, Serge Adams trumpet and flugelhorn, Jean-Remy Guedon on tenor sax and flute, and Pierre-Olivier Govin on baritone sax and saxello (!) is joined by Hugh on his trademark fuzz bass, Elton on alto and saxello, and Emmanuel Bex on Hammond organ! This recreates in effect the short lived horn heavy septet of the time of Soft Machine Third, but this is not a pale imitation - it's a fire-breathing dragon! Forget the bad-taste-in-your-mouth of scores of relive the past [badly] tribute albums - there are fresh and cookin' full-length versions of such classics as Facelift, As If, Slightly All The Time, Backwards, Chloe And The Pirates, Kings And Queens, Dedicated To You But.... Highly Recommended!

COLLECTIVE 4TET - Synopsis (Leo 380) Featuring William Parker on contrabass, Mark Hennen on piano, Jeff Hoyer on trombone and Heinz Geisser on drums. Fourth fabulous offering from this occasional quartet and another fine studio date from November of 2002. Organized and produced by percussion wiz Heinz Geissler with three talented downtowners. High octane improv that moves in organic waves with all four musicians acoustically spinning their web and weaving wonderfully together. Both Hennen and Hoyer are strong players who we don't hear from often enough. I can only recall trombonist Jef Hoyer from other projects with William Parker and Hennen from his dates with Charles Gayle and Tisziji Munoz. There is an air of mystery as all four listen, respond, evolve and occasionally erupt. Leo continually releases the finest in international improv situations.

ROSWELL RUDD/TOUMANI DIABATE - Malicool (Sunnyside/Soundscape 3008) Featuring the legendary Roswell Rudd on trombone, Toumani Diabate on kora, Lassana Diabate on balophone, Basseko Kouyate on ngone, Sayon Sissoko on guitar, Henry Schroy on bass and Mamadou Kouyate & Dala Diabate on vocals. An immensely inspired collaboration of various cultures with jazz and African roots, organized by our old friend Verna Gillis, who used to run the great Soundscape loft-space on the west end of 52nd St. during the late seventies. Both Roswell and Toumani have written wonderful tunes that blend these cultures into a sublime stream, plus superb covers of Monk ("Jackie-ing") and various on Gershwin's "Summertime", Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" and a traditional Welsh song. My favorite track, "For Toumani", features some intense and powerful electric bass pumping hard with swirling percussion. A thoroughly charming acoustic recording which captures this spirited and enchanting octet perfectly. Recommended!

BILL McHENRY QUARTET - Featuring Paul Motian (Fresh Sound NT 160) Featuring Bill on tenor sax, Ben Monder on guitar, Reid Anderson on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Over the past year, local tenor sensation, Bill McHenry, has been garnering mucho attention and praise from the NY Times, the Voice and assorted jazz zines, but sadly the fine Fresh Sound New Talent series/label has had some distribution problems. We are starting to now stock many of their titles and we will be mentioning and reviewing the ones we are currently stocking. Bill has an incredibly warm and lovely tone on his tenor sax, you can hear the history of those jazz giants from Coleman Hawkins through Sonny Rollins within his sound. Bill and Ben play especially eloquently here on tenor and guitar with some equally relaxed and exquisite playing from the drums and acoustic bass. Monder plays some eerie, ghost-like shadow sounds on "Alfombra Magica", instead of soloing to great effect. "Social Unconsciousness" is dedicated to Charlie Haden and it does have memorable third world melody and Monder takes a splendid (early) Frisell-like solo. There is a most relaxed sense of grace here, as if no one is in a hurray to jump to that nervous NY pace. There is a moment on "Dimensions" where one section fades into another and from that point we move through some quietly disorienting dream spaces. This is Bill's third fine date for Fresh Sounds and we will be stocking the others as well.
CD release for $14.

Other recommended gems from the Fresh Sound label soon to be in stock include two from the Chris Lightcap Qt (w/ McHenry & Tony Malaby), numerous treats from local piano wiz Ethan Iverson & The Bad Plus (now signed to Sony), a variety of inspired dates from local sax heroes Chris Cheek and Seamus Blake, as well as a few treasures from our pal (and Canterbury scholar) trumpeter David Weiss, whose recent release by the New Jazz Composers Octet is one of the year's best.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/SACHIKO M w/ DJ MAO & PETER SKALA - Warholes or Warhol Memory Disorder (Hermes Discorbie 002) A sometimes fascinating, if occasionally sparse collaboration between Japanese sonic explorers Otomo (sampler most likely) & Sachiko (sine wave generator) with (painter & cowboy) Peter Scala and DJ Mao (turntablist from China) from an installation at the Museum of Modern Art in Slovakia based on some weird ideas from Andy Warhol, which have been sampled and re-sampled. The distant mooing of cows with the high-end drones of ENOesque ambiance. The CD-Rom material documents the visual-acoustic aspects of the installation and my ancient pc at home will not play it. I'll have to watch it on the Mac at work. The audio portion is interesting enough! We've only got a handful of these, so...

DAVE LIEBMAN BIG BAND - Beyond the Line (Omnitone 12204) This features Dave Liebman, Gunnar Mossblad, Jay Brandford, Dave Riekenberg, Tim Ries & Chris Karlic on reeds; Dave Ballou, Laurie Frink, Bill Warfield & Pat Dorian on trumpets; Tim Sessions, Scott Reeves, Sam Burtis & Jeff Nelson on trombones; Jim Ridl onkeyboards, Vic Juris on guitar, Tony Marino on bass and Marko Marcinko on drums. This soprano (and tenor) sax hero Dave Liebman's first big band date as a leader and it is an auspicious debut. Although Dave composed all of the pieces here, six great arrangers were well chosen to bring this into strong focus. "Hiroshima Memorial" is an intense and turbulent work that evokes the horrors of the Hiroshima bombing, strong, tight waves of horns with Dave's passionate soprano sailing and soloing on top. Dave also plays some haunting wooden flute at the beginning and end of this sprawling piece. The title track features some lovely soprano, flutes, horns and acoustic guitar playing this charming, sunny melody. Louie Prima's swing era hit, "Sing, Sing, Sing" may seem like an odd choice, but they do swing hard and Dave's sublime, haunting solo near the end, a real beaut. The rich, warm textures of the horns on "Carrisima" are what makes it sound so marvelous, bathing Dave's superb solo in radiant hues. "Fracas" recall's Zappa's incredible 'Grand Wazoo' jazz/rock big band, with that super quick, ultra tight, complex marvels. "Done with Restraint" starts out in dreamy slow motion and then erupts through some quick hairpin turns and then back to slo-mo, spacious, suspense filled sequences which metamorphs into wondrous modern classical kaleidoscopic layers of horns only sections. Vic Juris plays some amazing, long, flowing Latiny acoustic guitar throughout "Pablo's Story" and of course Liebman finishes with another great spirited soprano solo. Another thing which makes this disc so magical is the lush and enchanting production, it sounds just right. One of Dave Liebman's best endeavors, in a long line of inspired gems.

CAMERON BROWN & THE HEAR & NOW - Hear And How! (Omnitone 15205) Although he's been recording and performing for over forty years, this is bassist Brown's first [recorded live in Belgium] as leader; with Dave Ballou on trumpet and flugelhorn, Leon Parker on drums, guest Dewey Redman on tenor sax, and featuring the ultra-cool vocals of Sheila Jordan!
Sheila was commissioned by Don Cherry to write a lyric for his late-period signature tune "Art Deco" and that finally makes its debut here. Other covers found here include "Remembrance" from Cherry's album Complete Communion, Ornette Coleman's "What Reason Could I Give", and Don Pullen's "Double Arc Jake"..and two originals by Cameron. Engaging and enchanting - we don't often feature vocals jazz in our list, so take heed!

ESTRADASPHERE - Quadropus (Web of Mimicry 013) Third astounding and ridiculously cool release from this crazed west coast quartet that simply knows no boundaries of genre. They play dozens of often exotic instruments and every track sounds like a completely different band. They start with a traditional Greek song which they rev up to some hard rockin' intensity. Next they pull off a great accapella world music sorta ditty in which they imitate other instruments with just their voices, mutating the Beach Boys into an Indian vocal chorus. Music for a spaghetti western turns into a funky horn band groover with a scorching guitar solo thrown in. "Hardball" features some quaint Brian Wilson like vocal and string arrangements, while "A Car Ride in Idealistic Ethiopia" takes a middle-eastern riff for the horns & strings and rocks them out, then someone turns the dial on the radio as they warp through more unexpected genre twists and turns. "Crystal Blue" is another fun surfin' rock tune with a great accapella chorus. "Jungle Warfare" sounds like a death metal stomper with some sick, grumbling vocals and then "Bodyslam" erupts in a hard rockin' rap tune, totally true to that old school sound and hilarious. The final tune goes back to one of those whiney voice Beach Boys things, nicely done. Word is that when Estradasphere get a chance to do two sets in one night, both are completely different, so we never know what to really expect, except that we are in for a great joy ride through the hall of twisted mirrors.

JOHN CALE - Hobo Sapiens (EMI 5917112/Europe) Can't remember the last time John Cale had new release out in the US, but it must've been a while ago. This is no exception - it's only released in Europe and Japan!
The Welsh born Cale's long career stretches back to his mid-sixties work with the Velvet Underground and LaMonte Young simultaneously. He is both a gifted producer (for Nico & the Stooges), as well as a great songwriter with more than a dozen solo efforts throughout his long career. He has a done great deal of soundtrack work throughout the last decade released only from Belgium. 'HoboSapiens' is another of his quirky, smart rock efforts. Cale has consistently written catchy tunes with that primal rockin' groove, yet his rather poetic lyrics reveal a deep appreciation of modern and ancient art and philosophy. Who else would write songs about Magritte and Archimedes? What stands out here is Cale's inventive arrangements, evocative keyboards (mellotron?) and strings, all layered just right underneath his hypnotic, dreamy voice. Cale seems to favor some slowed down techno grooves here and there. A couple of the mainly instrumental songs here deal with catchy grooves and mesmerizing keyboard swirls. "Twilight Zone" mixes David Bowie and Peter Gabriel modern rock influences and includes a rather catchy chorus. "Letter from Abroad" is a disturbing, nightmarish piece which seems to deal with the current state of world affairs and horrors. John Cale always does a fine job of evoking the dark undercurrents of recent times, without being too specific, giving us a chance to consider these things for ourselves.

NEIL B. ROLNICK - Fish Love That (Deep Listening 2002) New music composer Neil Rolnick's ensemble is called Fish Love That and they feature Todd Reynolds on violin, Andrew Sterman on tenor sax & flutes, Ron Horton on trumpet, Neil on keyboards, Steve Rust on basses and Dean Sharp on drums. Fish That Love have been around since September of 1996 and held a monthly residency at the Knit until June of '98. Reynolds, Sterman and Rust all contribute compositions, as well as Neil, who oversees the band. Todd's "Those Cows They Never Come Home", opens at a quick pace with everyone sailing intensely, this sounds more like tight jazz/rock/prog jamming with some spicy free elements thrown in than modern classical written material. Neil's "Calypso" is a smoky, suspenseful piece with some haunting tenor sax and violin soloing. Most of these pieces partially composed with well placed written themes. Everyone gets an opportunity to play some thoughtful solos. On Steve's "Piscator", both Ron's trumpet and Andrew's flute take long, inspired solos over the group's spacious cushion of sounds. The group (FLT) soar on "The Power of 12" with swirling horns and furious rhythm team action, Neil's sampled vibes also weaving quickly throughout. You can tell that this band has worked together for a while, since everything here is so focused and well integrated. There is also a strong balance between the heavier and the more restrained pieces. "The Well" features some warm, dreamy tenor sax and violin drifting nicely together. A grand effort overall. Neil has provided us with copies of three other fine previous releases of his, so check them all out.

Neil B. Rolnick - ElectriCity (OO Discs #8) from '92 features George Lewis on trombone and Robert Dick on flutes. CD release for $10 Neil B. FREE FALL [KEV VANDERMARK/HAKER FLATEN/HAYARD WIIK] - Furnace (Wobbly Rail 013) Featuring Ken Vandermark on clarinets, Ingebrigt H'ker Flaten on bass and H'vard Wiik on piano. Gorgeous trio recording from Chicago reedsman Vandermark and his trio Free Fall, achieving freedom and controlled chaos, balanced with beauty and delicacy. "Any listener with a solid knowledge of jazz history will realize that inspiration for the name of this group was taken from the brilliant album, Free Fall, by the Jimmy Giuffre Trio. The instrumentation has obvious parallels (clarinet, piano, bass) and I'd like to think that the music of this ensemble has an openness akin to that of Giuffre's band with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow. It is important to note, though there are other associations that can be made between the two groups (combination of pulse and open time, distribution of melodic responsibility through fragmentation, etc.), Free Fall was not put together to function as a Jimmy Giuffre 'tribute band'." --Ken Vandermark.

SOUND OFF 2002 [V.A.] - Typewriting Aloud/Typos Allowed (Hermes Discorbie 004) Strange sampler from the last Intermedia Sound Off festival devoted entirely to that ancient writing implement - the typewriter. The fifteen artists include Paul Panhuysen, Gen Ken Montgomery, Carl Stone, The Lazy Anarchists, Al Margolis (If, Bwana), Teoria Otrasu, Jozef Cseres, Brandon LaBelle, Adnan Balcinovic, en, Michael Delia, S.K.Y., Peter Strickland and gal. In the foreword by Jozef Cseres, he mentions his lifelong fascination with typewriters, although not owning many other modern technological conveniences. Since taking typing in high school, I also have had a fascination for this often overlooked convenience, that we take for granted. The thick booklet included here has compositions, texts or artwork from all of the involved sound artists, as well as contribution from other artists. Each piece deals with his or her own typewriting observation and utilizes typewriting samples differently. Sometimes the typing is altered and layered, sometimes a voice speaks out the letters and symbols as they are used. There is a great deal more going on here than one would imagine from the world typewriters.
Limited edition (for us) Slovakian import CD with thick booklet for $15.

SOUND OFF 1999/2000 [V.A.] - Beams & Waves (SNEH 003) Featuring 30+ minutes of solo laser koto improvisations from the wonderful Miya Masaoka plus another 41 minutes of electronic weirdness from Lengow & Heyermears live at/on Radio Free Budapest in Slovakia. Miya spins her hypnotic web of swirling laser strings, quietly turning light/notes into drifting ghosts. L&H collaborate with a few radio artists (mentioned above) like Bernard Gal, Jozef Juhasz, Pal Toth, Bernhard Loibner, Gordan Paunovic and Alien Productions (a trio). This long piece moves through a maze of soundscapes and radio transmissions. A subtle yet quietly fascinating journey. The label SNEH stands for Society for Non-Convential Music of Slovakia. We only have a few of these...

TAKU SUGIMOTO - Chamber Music (Bootrop-Boy 019) Mr. Sugimoto has been one of the most important musicians on the improv-front for some years now with releases on Erstwhile, Grob, A Bruit Secret & Improvised Music From Japan. Redefining guitar improv with his ultra minimal way of playing, the most extreme endpoint for this was the Taku Sugimoto Guitar Quartet album released earlier this year on Bottrop-Boy. On 'Chamber Music' he puts the guitar aside and composes three pieces for violin, cello and piano. He creates the same sustained sound as his guitar pieces, although these new works sound more composed and could be compared to modern classical composers such as Morton Feldman. Only after an hour Sugimoto's guitar enters the frame together with a banjo for the short closing track. Read more about Taku in the November issue of The Wire zine.
CD release for $16.

THE DEAD C - The Damned (Starlight Furniture 21) Over the last 17 years, The Dead C have produced some of the most strident, uncompromising and downright nasty rock screech to exit from their homeland of New Zealand, without sacrificing an ounce of the grace and finesse required of tamers of gigantic, wild sandworms. Their eighteen full-length albums and numerous seven-inch singles have garnered worldwide respect from vertebrates and invertebrates alike. The Dead C's improvised noise rock verges on disintegration with a trademark hazy disorientation, invariably evoking hypnotic and heavy moods. But The Dead C is no bummer. They have always sought liberation from shallow and easy rock conventions; amid the murk of cardboard box guitars, underwater vocals, and ramshackle drumming, a new consciousness emerges. The recognizable, sullen strumming, mumbling and lyrical ennui of painter and educator Michael Morley (also known for his solo work as Gate), anchored by percussionist Robbie Yeats and punctuated by the atonal (guitar/noise) bursts of writer and Corpus Hermeticum label boss Bruce Russell (also known for his solo work as A Handful of Dust), coalesce in a solid front that mocks the efforts of schmaltz-peddling hacks. An immensely strong and powerful brew of churning guitars and a pounding, relentless drummer.
CD release for $15.

EXIAS-J - Electric Conception "avant-garde" (PSF 133) Engaging avant-improv from this unknown (to us) Japanese quintet, recorded live at Aire-Gin in Yokohama in November of last year. Their names include Hideaki Kondo & Kanda on guitars, Teruaki Tanikawa on saxes, Miyazaki on electronics & computer and Naoto Nishizawa on drums. Starting quietly at first, they build through highly connected freer regions with craft and taste. Listening closely, letting things occur naturally, floating carefully in space. Sounds like these young cats have been checking out that first Music Improvisation Company on ECM, which was recently reissued on CD in Japan. Stark and scary electric guitars shimmer, their feedback drenched howling erupting together with a web of cymbals splashing. Too intense! Influenced by the godfathers of Japanese free/jazz insanity/abandon - Mayasuki Takayanagi and Kaoru Abe, with some early AMM-like noise/power influence. They came down to DMG and left us with just a few copies to sell, we probably should've gotten more.
Japanese import CD release for $15.

SHIN-ICHIRO KANDA/SAKURA NORIKANE - Ongaku-Bigaku (Bishop Records 008) Splendid free acoustic duo featuring Shin-Ichiro on piano and Sakura on percussion. Superbly recorded studio set, often subtle and child-like. Eventually, things get a bit darker as Shin plays inside the piano, rubbing and banging on the strings, one note at a timeÉ patience is required. The most laid-back and dreamy improv performance I've heard lately.

REISSUES, RESTOCKS AND HISTORIC RECORDINGS FOR NOVEMBER 14th, 2003:

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND - 'Dichotomy' (Ozit 8003) A treasure chest of some 23 rarities, out-takes and demos from the 60's and 70's. There are just too many gems here - swell (authentic sounding) version of blues standard "Key to the Highway", a bunch of spirited (nearly impossible to play) Magic Band instrumentals, different versions of Beefheart classics, "Run Paint Run", "Sugar N' Spikes", "Frownland" and "Sun Zoom Spark". I recognize about half of these tracks from various bootlegs and bonus tracks from those early Beefheart albums now available on cd. Sound quality is pretty good, a couple of acetates need some tweaking, but considering this treasure is 78 plus minutes long, it is well worth the bread/doe/moolah. What are you waiting for?!?
British import CD only release (available for how long? who knows) for $20.

MARS - The Complete Studio Recordings (G3G Records/Spooky Sound) [CD only reissue] Mars were one those four legendary No/New York bands from that infamous 'No New York' album produced by Eno. Mars featured Sumner Crane and China Burg (Lucy Hamilton?) both on guitars & voice, Mark Cunningham on bass & voice and Nancy Arlen on drums. Mars existed for two years from 1977 to 1979 and played about 30 gigs. This compiles all eleven studio tracks that Mars did and is 32 minutes. Mars have an oddly charming, bent sound somewhere between Pere Ubu and Television. Fractured guitars, warped vocals, throbbing/melting bass and minimal drums. A primal, punk/noise/rock gem!
Limited edition CD in an embossed blue/silver cardboard slipcase for $16.

TREY GUNN - Untune The Sky [2 Disc set: CD & DVD] (Inside Out 60512; Germany) We've watched Trey grow into his own over the last ten years as King Crimson's touch guitar/bassist - he is no longer dismissable as a 'newjack" - as if Criimso's last studio album and live double DVD isn't proof enough of his unique talents here's some more! The first disc [CD] features a potent selection of cuts from 5 of this solo outings as well as one from the Fripp/Rieflin/Gunn trio album; several are alternate mixes and one track is previously unreleased. The DVD {the real meat here for those who have everything to date} are 7 tunes live with the Trey Gunn Quartet [Joe Mendelson on 2nd Warr (touch) guitar, and maestros Tony Geballe on guitar, 12 string and saz, and Bob Muller on allsorts kit and tabla. Plus video montages for 4 more tunes and interviews, etc. Another great package that proves that the few drops of PVC needed to make a 5" disc[s] needn't cost you a fortune!
CD/DVD set for $20

SUN CITY GIRLS - Wah (Abduction 023) Previously released as a tour only CD in November 2002 in limited edition of 500 copies, it has now been extended to 1000 copies with 500 more recently pressed for those who missed it the first time. The record features instrumental tracks of drums, bass, and electric guitar with Rick Bishop's wah-wah peddle in full force throughout. Recorded in a Seattle garage in 2001, the feel of this record is reminiscent of a late-sixties trio of acid stoners jamming into the night. The playing is fluid, direct, and spontaneous with that semi-coherent SCG touch which is only known to those who know their sound. The last cut is a 36 minute epic of rogue exploration titled 'Distorted Views'. One of my deadhead friends loves this record. Then he bought SCG's Jack's Creek LP and thought it was a different band. Well, as with most of their releases, Sun City Girls are different bands -- about 100 of them. FE in-house blurb.
Limited edition of 500 CD release for $14.

SUN CITY GIRLS - Flute and Mask (Abduction 024) Also released as a tour only CD and repressed for those who missed it the first time. This collection is a mood mosaic of sinister characters, ambient ceremony and what appears to be folk music from unknown origins. "Wheres My F**kin Jesus?" starts this thing off in grand fashion as a live performance piece of vocal pageantry and strange happenings which seem almost completely alien. Another track, "Lord White of the North" is a creepy violin drone with orchestrations that grew some Neptune foliage right outta my speakers! It all ends with an insane piece called 'Dukun Olympic Theatre'. Mostly acoustic instrumentation of strings, percussion, gamelan, and other unidentifiable sources, 'Flute and Mask' delivers that 'otherness' vibe in a way that no other group out there seems to provide. It's still hard to imagine that John Ashcroft continues to let these three wackos roam freely within US borders. FE in-house blurb.
Limited edition of 500 CD release for $14.

SUN CITY GIRLS - Dante's Disneyland Inferno (Abduction 007) [2 CD set] An epic journey of otherworldly songs, stories and a few kaleidoscopic mind-altering interludes from 1996. The Sun City trio here play dozens of instruments - marimba, mandolin, lap steel, autoharp, kalimba, melodica, flutes, sound effects, prepared tapes and lots of cool vocals with sly/witty lyrics. This seems to be the most focused and connected of all Sun City cds heard today. Lots of great songs throughout the 35 tunes/over two hours, plus a long and fascinating story concocted by Charles Gocher is written out in the liner note booklet. Alan Bishop does a great job of writing lengthy lyrics dealing with all sorts of political and personal observations worth considering, as well as narrating an ongoing story that swirls through ever-changing scenery and environmental obstacles, often hilarious in its righteous indignation of this world in which we all live. This is their best batch yet and it is allegedly out-of-print.
Also once released as a three LP set, this limited 2 CD set sells for $20.

The Carnival Folklore Resurrection Series (CFR) was suppose to run ten volumes through 2000. Each of this series captures a very different view/blend of the Sun City Girls weird world. MAYA DEREN - Experimental Films (1943-1959) [DVD] (Mystic Fire Video 7649) "From the early 1940's until her death in 1961, Maya Deren evoked and exemplified the American avant-garde movement virtually by herself. Her first film, Meshes Of The Afternoon, set the tone for the decade and linked the movement to the older European avant-garde films of Cocteau and Bunuel." - Cecil Starr at the N.Y. Times. "Intensely personal, symbolic and surreal films that reveal her deepest, darkest fantasies. She's Fellini and Bergman wrapped in one gloriously possessed body. Watching these films can change forever your concept of what cinema can be." - L.A. Weekly. Contents include Meshes of the Afternoon, At Land, A Study in Choreography for Camera, Ritual in Transfigured Time, Meditation on Violence, The Very Eye of Night. Mayan Deren was an inspiration to Zorn and he scored the film about her for his filmworks series.

JIM DICKINSON FIELD RECORDINGS - Delta Experiment Project #3 (Birdman 047) Dickinson captures raw and spontaneous performances from some of the most important blues artists in the Memphis/Mississippi area on these exclusive recordings by Furry Lewis, Sleepy John Estes (whose performances feature the guitar work of Ry Cooder), Otha Turner, Mose Vinson, Johnny Woods and Alec Teal. These pure examples of Delta blues were committed to tape at Sam Phillips studios, Ardent studios, the Orpheum Theater, and various fields in and around the Memphis area. Raw, gritty and real - just how the blues should be heard. Dickinson says, "The Blues is a musical tradition born from the dark prison of slavery. Torn from family and homeland, separated from custom and culture, the call and response of the African work song took on new emotional depth. A lonesome sound in the darkness -- a howling dog or passing train -- echoed by harmonica or guitar became a raw, powerful statement of hard times, long work, and fast pleasure; a voice in the southern night complaining about the human condition. - FE press blurb
CD release for $15.

JAKI BYARD/JOE FARRELL QUARTET- The Last from Lennie's (Prestige 11029) Final installment live release from this superb modern jazz quartet from April of 1965. Jaki Byard was one of best pianists we had, he embraced the whole history of jazz and kept everything at his fingertips. His work with Charles Mingus in the early sixties was consistently inventive and he continued to work wonders with his own groups throughout the sixties. Hear Jaki spins those keys with a young Joe Farrell, sax player and flutist, both swinging hard with Jaki's longtime rhythm team - George Tucker on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. Powerful stuff! Joe Farrell would go on to make some amazing albums as a leader like 'Song of the Wind' (w/ John McLaughlin) and 'Outback'. Jaki Byard is unstoppable, burning up the piano at times, with one incredible solo after the other. Joe Farrell also is in fine form, on tenor and soprano sax and flute, with many a fine solo. Jaki does a great medley for solo piano, which effortlessly moves through many styles. Glad to finally have the last of this consistently hot series of live Jaki Byard recordings.
CD release for $14.
