AND NOW,

FOUR FABULOUS NEW GEMS FROM TZADIK!

JOHN ZORN'S THE CLASSIC GUIDE TO STRATEGY - The Classic Guide To Strategy V. 3: The Fire Book [V.9: Zorn 50th Birthday Celebration] (Tzadik 5009) The saxophone as you've never heard it before - a rare and dynamic tour de force by one of the most original voices the saxophone has ever known! Zorn's unique solo style is a microcosm of his entire body of work and this set of live improvisations are some of his best - and the only unaccompanied recordings to be released since 1985. The basic building blocks of Zorn's concepts of compositional form, pacing, juxtaposition, tension and release, sound and silence are revealed here in their rawest possible state. - Tzadik BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION SERIES
"When I first caught John Zorn playing solo sax at Studio Henry in 1979, he sat at small table with dozens of sax and clarinet mouth-pieces, a bunch of bird calls and a cup of water. I wasn't sure what to make of this fellow, being a loft-jazz snob perhaps, but one of my idols, Fred Frith soon called him a "bloody genius" and I began to take Zorn more seriously. He won my respect with his brilliant game pieces and I realized his sax playing was a completely unique development in a not too long line of solo sax efforts, which began in the late sixties with Anthony Braxton's 'For Alto' classic double album and continued with Evan Parker and Roscoe Mitchell. Zorn recorded two volumes of incredible solo sax music in the early eighties called 'The Classic Guide to Strategy', which sound unlike any other solo sax playing, since he had invented and evolved an entirely new vocabulary on his alto sax. Since that time, Zorn's alto playing has continued to evolve and he rarely takes his sax apart, yet still comes up with distinctive sounds. For Zorn's fortieth birthday celebration in September of 1993 at the old Knit, he again played a solo sax set, something he hadn't done in years. He told me that this was more difficult than he imagined since he hadn't done it in so long. Ten years later, in September of 2003 for his 50th Birthday Celebration he again played another solo sax set at Tonic. It was a very special set, especially for folks like Stephanie Stone and myself, who go all the way back to the early days of the downtown scene. When Zorn pulled out that cup of water towards the end and played into it, he gave us a wink. It was wonderful to witness this special event and now it is equally marvelous to just listen to Zorn create his own unique sonic world with just his alto sax and mouthpiece. There is a section about six minutes into the first piece where Zorn stretches and twists one note inside-out while also playing a counter melody at the same time. This is just one the amazing techniques and signature sounds that Zorn has developed and made his own. This entire set has a number of these unique moments and ideas. For any of you who need to be convinced that Mr. Zorn has created something completely unique, this is great place to start. For me, it is another grand story that Zorn is telling those who wish to really listen." - BLG

ANNIE GOSFIELD - Lost Signals and Drifting Satellites (Tzadik 8007) Another fun trip into the imaginative world of Annie Gosfield. Her third CD for Tzadik is a nod toward tradition as she draws contemporary classical music into her own mysterious orbit. Four crazy pieces incorporating satellite sounds, static, machine noise and microtonality with virtuosic fireworks from some of the best performers in America today, including world renown cellist Joan Jeanrenaud and the New York based Flux string quartet. >From a duet piece for violin and satellites to a prepared piano piece about ghost towns and hardware stores, this new addition to the Tzadik Composer Series blurs the boundaries between music and noise and creates a new world of imaginative sounds, passion, wit and humor.
"Back for her third disc on Tzadik is composer Annie Gosfield: two pieces for strings and electronics, a string quartet and another for prepared piano. Lightheaded and Heavyhearted is performed by the notable Flux Quartet, full of glissandi (sliding pitches) and quartertones scampering here and there. Lost Signals and Drifting Satellites for George Kentros (violin) is a very appropriate title for violin and electronics (Outer space twitterings and violin work so well). The composer performs Mentryville on prepared piano with objects inserted in the strings of the piano to create new percussive textures foreign to the traditional sound of the piano. Joan Jeanrenaud (cello) performs The Harmony of the Body-Machine with rhythmic hissing rumbling industrial samples. Those electronics are way too cool. "- David Beardsley TZADIK COMPOSER SERIES

SCOTT JOHNSON - John Somebody [expanded edition] (Tzadik 8009) Scott Johnson is one of new music's great originals, a composer whose distinctive voice and hybridization of rock and the avant-garde elude easy categorization. An early collaborator of Laurie Anderson, his pioneering composition John Somebody transformed speech patterns into instrumental music, and opened the door to a dynamic new technique for blending sampled sound and live performance, familiar to many through the work of minimalist innovator Steve Reich. Long out of print, this 20th Century masterpiece is presented here in a newly remastered, definitive edition. Also included are two compositions for electric guitars and samples from the same period, one issued here for the first time. Experimental music mines rock in three astounding pieces by one of America's most important mavericks. TZADIK COMPOSER SERIES

CHARMING HOSTESS [JEWLIA EISENBERG] - Sarajevo Blues (Tzadik 7197) One of the most important releases this year, Jewlia Eisenberg's radical setting of texts by Walter Benjamin, Asja Lacis and Gershom Sholem point to a whole new style of acappella vocal music. Drawing upon traditions from doo-wop to Meredith Monk, Eskimo throat singing, to Hebrew cantilation and more, Trilectic is as charming as it is challenging. A brilliant vocalist and bandleader (Charming Hostess) Jewlia has studied a wide variety of vocal techniques, including the secular vocal music of women in the Jewish Falasha tribe in Ethiopia. An astonishing solo debut by this intensely creative musical thinker. Jewlia Eisenberg: voice, bass Carla Kihlstedt: voice, shaker, Nina Rolle: voice, Wes Anderson: voice, drums Nils Frykdahl: voice Dan Rathbun: voice Frank Grau: vocal percussion; Dawn McCarthy: voice of Walter; Freddy Price: whistle. ARTHUR RUSSELL - World of Echo [CD/DVD] (Audika 1002) {This limited first edition includes an additional DVD, which will not be offered on later CD pressings} A truly gifted and enigmatic sonic genius, cellist and composer Arthur Russell spent his all-too-brief career living an artistic double life. In the 1970's, he could be found performing and collaborating with the likes of such downtown luminaries as Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, Peter Zummo, David Byrne, Phill Niblock, Ernie Brooks, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, David Van Tiegham... the list runs a mile long. After a visit one night in 1977 to NYC DJ Nicky Siano's dance club the Gallery, he had an epiphany - he discovered the cyclic repititions of disco songs to be not so far removed from those in systems music and so-called "minimalist" avant-garde compositions. As a result, Russell befriended and collaborated with many New York DJs and dance producers such as Larry Levan, Steve D'Aquisto, and Walter Gibbons; under names such as Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, and Indian Ocean, he created some of the most otherworldly and timeless rhythm pieces ever recorded - avant-garde compositions designed to be danced to, many of them still played in clubs today!
Throughout his entire career, Russell strove to find a way to "redefine 'songs' from the point of view of instrumental music," to seamlessly "liquify a raw material where concert music and popular song can criss cross." After working with producer Gary Lucas on Peter Gordon's 1986 CBS LP "Innocent," Russell scored (thanks to Lucas) a record deal at Upside Records, who soon after released what is considered by many to be Russell's masterpiece - "World of Echo," his third album. A breathtaking album of loosely-structured (and in some cases seemingly improvised) songs for solo cello, voice, and minimal percussion, Russell creates a sound-scape like nothing that has come before or after it - even 18 years after its initial release! Playing his cello and singing through numerous electronic echo and delay boxes, Russell bows, taps, scrapes, sighs, and floats through an album that blends elements of indian raga, the slurred vocalese and folk tendencies of John Martyn circa "Solid Air," and the endless reverberations of dub reggae pioneers such as King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry, creating a "Pink Moon" for the Deep-Listening set.
Now, thanks to Steve Knutson's Audika Records, the album FINALLY appears on CD for the first time ever, remastered by longtime Russell collaborator Ray Janos from the artist's personal 1/4" sequenced tapes, sounding even better than the original LP release, which was too lengthy to really be sequenced as a single LP - it should have been a double (and soon will, when Audika reissues the album on vinyl in 2005 as a double LP).
This version of "World of Echo" includes four previously unreleased bonus tracks entitled "Sketches for 'World of Echo'," along with a bonus DVD. "World of Echo" was originally planned to be a music video collaboration with Niblock filming Russell's performances of the "Echo" material in 1985 & '86. Long unavailable as a VHS video via the Deep Listening and Experimental Intermedia Foundations, "Terrace of Unintelligibility" features Russell performing "Answers Me" and "Soon-to-Be Innocent Fun/Let's See" at Niblock's loft in extended versions different from those on the album. Also included on the DVD is "Some Imaginary Far Away Type Things a/k/a Lost in the Meshes" - unedited video rushes by Niblock of Russell performing more "Echo" music in extended form, once again at the Experimental Intermedia loft.
Personally speaking this is, without question, my all-time favorite album - the ONE record that's coming with me to that desert island all record collectors have nightmares of oneday being stranded on. Dubheads, deep listeners, ambient enthusiasts, folkies, avant pop fans, and the musically eclectic in general - this one's for you. Put on those headphones and let's go swimming. - Mikey "IQ" Jones from DMG

SIX NEW TITLES FROM THE WONDERFUL LEO LABEL:

ANTHONY BRAXTON - Solo (Milano) 1979 Vol 2 (Leo GY 023/UK) A quarter of a century ago Anthony Braxton played two solo concerts in Milano within a space of three days. Following the success and importance of the Solo (Milano) 1979, it's only natural to release another solo concert played one day later. There are twelve pieces on this CD, but they do not overlap with the compositions performed by Braxton the day before. Five of the twelve pieces come from out of the jazz tradition. Usually Braxton keeps his own compositions and standards separately, but this is a very rare concert when the two came together. Liner notes by Steve Day.

THE WALLY SHOUP TRIO - Blue Purge (Leo 412/UK) The Wally Shoup Trio follows up its critically acclaimed Leo debut "Fusillades & Lamentations" with another batch of improvisations described as "Fire Music with a lot of Soul". Shoup's alto sax, Reuben Radding's bass and Bob Rees's drums spontaneously combust to create intense music that revels in its hard-boiled elegance. As the title suggests, the Wally Shoup Trio explodes in a soulful exorcism. Another original Shoup painting graces the cover.

FRANK GRATKOWSKI PROJECT - Loft Exile V [2 CD set] (Leo 410/411/UK) On the occasion of the 40th birthday of Frank Gratkowski in 2003, the Moers Jazz Festival and The Loft Koeln put together The Loft Exile V project in which Frank Gratkowski could realize his ideas. For this project Frank invited a dream line-up: Herb Robertson on trumpet, Wolter Wierbos on trombone, Dieter Manderscheid and Wilbert DeJoode on basses, Gerry Hemingway and Michael Vatcher on drums, and Tobias Delius and himself on saxophones. The result is 138 minutes of music to be heard to be believed.
2 CD set for $26

ACHIM KAUFMANN - Knives: Solo Piano (Leo 409; UK) This is the second CD by Achim Kaufmann for Leo Records, the first one (Double Exposure, CD LR 289) being his quartet with the American saxophonist Michael Moor. The music of the quartet was called "the finest forward-thinking chamber jazz coming out of Europe today". The solo CD is altogether different. It's a result of many years of investigation of the piano. There are 20 pieces on this CD, and in Achim's words "they are different types of knives, different shapes".
CD for $15

ARIEL SHIBOLET - Metal Tube & Consciousness: Soprano Saxophone Solo (Leo 414/ UK) It seems that Steve Lacy and Evan Parker brought the art of soprano saxophone playing to the ultimate heights. What else can be achieved in terms of concept, sound or virtuosity? Apparently, they have not said the last word. Here is a daring young man with a vision who is trying to push the boundaries of multiphonics even further. Of course, as his predecessors, he uses circular breathing, but on top of that his breathing and voice become musical devices.
CD for $15

VINCE VONLANTHEN - [Oeil]: Solo Guitar (Leo 413/UK) 16 improvised moods that reflect the vast sound palete of the guitarist Vinz Vonlanthen. The noises, pulsations, grooves, melodies, sometimes raucous and loud, sometimes sensual and full of emotion. Strings hit, pulled pinched, played with a bow, with a marble, prepared with objects that will surprise, amaze, change, provoke thoughts... A very personal statement devoid of any cliches with a unique sound. All pieces with the exception of two tracks are played live without multitracking and with the help of two pedals. All in all, a huge talent arrived on the scene.

ANTHONY BRAXTON - 23 Standards (Quartet) 2003 [4 CD set] (Leo 402-405/UK) The 4-CD set (4.5 hours of music) was recorded during a series of concerts in 2003 by the new Braxton's quartet with Kevin O'Neil on guitar, Kevin Norton on percussion, Andy Eulau on bass and Anthony Braxton on saxophone. The set is destined to make jazz history not only for Braxton's discovery of the most remarkable guitarist to emerge in a decade, but for its special quality of performing standards in an entirely new way and reinventing the tradition. Braxton's work becomes even more valuable and necessary in view of the forces of reaction in jazz. As Stuart Broomer writes in his remarkable liner notes, while a conservative performer merely echoes and diminishes the tradition, Braxton makes known the social, moral, and historical imperatives that drive this music and are embedded in the tradition. He makes known the spirit of spontaneity, community, change, freedom, life and creation. He makes it as new and vital as the original forms. "Our thanks, then, to Anthony Braxton. In an era when the jazz past is regularly Bowdlerized, trivialized and travestied.... reduced to little more than a marketing plan.... Braxton presents it in much of its true potentiality as the authentic discourse of its time, making both the past and the present (even the future) that much richer than it was before". Limited edition of 1000 copies.

GRACHAN MONCUR III ENSEMBLE - Exploration (Capri 74068) Featuring the legendary Grachan Moncur III & Dave Woodley on trombones, Billy Harper on tenor sax, Gary Bartz on alto sax, Tim Hagans on trumpet, John Clark on french horn, Gary Smulyan on baritone sax, Ray Drummond on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Jeez, what an amazing line-up! Mr. Moncur recorded two great albums for Blue Note in the sixties, two more gems for BYG, one for JCOA and then seemed to have disappeared. In the last decade he resurfaced with Roswell Rudd & Archie Shepp, Charles Tolliver's Legacy Band and for a few projects with William Parker. A review copy is on its way, but I can't imagine this being anything other than great.

NOEL AKCHOTE - Sonny II / The Music of Sonny Sharrock (Winter & Winter 108) An extraordinary and heartfelt tribute to the pioneering jazz/rock/funk/noise electric guitar hero Sonny Sharrock, who died way too young, in the early nineties. Eclectic French guitarist, Noel Akchote, plays various electric and acoustic guitars only here and plays 19 songs, mostly written by Sonny from his entire career, as well as a couple of tunes associated with Mr, Sharrock and a couple of originals penned by Noel and played in Sonny's style. A number of Sonny's most popular songs are included, "Blind Willie", "Black Woman" and "Portrait of Linda in Three Colors, All Black". Noel keeps all but one of the tracks under 5 minutes, we get to hear quite a number of Sonny's most memorable songs as well as the unique guitar sound that Sonny embraced and evolved. Although Sonny Sharrock is often considered to be a "jazz musician", having played and recorded with flutist Herbie Mann for many years in the late sixties, his distinctive guitar tone and approach which was rather noisy was inspired by free jazz saxists, he remained in between categories. Mr. Akchote also embraces various styles and worlds, so it is apt that he would find some kinship with a fellow traveler of the in-between. Noel plays quite a bit of acoustic guitar here, something I don't recall as ever hearing Sonny do and also layers the guitars on numerous tracks, something that Sonny did mostly of his one solo guitar effort, 'Guitar'. Just under 55 minutes and consistently strong. - BLG

PETER KOWALD/ALBERTO BRAIDA/GIANCARLO LOCATELLI - aria (free elephant 004) Featuring the late, great Peter Kowald on contrabass, Alberto Braida on piano and Giancarlo Locatelli on clarinet. This was avant/jazz bassist supreme, international traveler and master improviser, Peter Kowald's final studio session before his unfortunate departure only six days later here in NYC. Alberto and Giancarlo are two of Italy's best improv musicians, having worked together consistently for the six years previous to this session.

NEW FROM OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT CADENCE

RUTHERFORD/WACHSMANN/LOVENS - Well Spring (Cadence 1176) Featuring Paul Rutherford on trombone, Harri Sjostrom on soprano sax, Philipp Wachsmann on violin, Teppo Hauto-Aho on contrabass and Paul Lovens on drums. This looks like another amazing line-up and again a review copy is on its way now. Legendary British trombone hero, Paul Rutherford was perhaps the first person to record an historic solo trombone record and has worked with the LJCO, Braxton and Keith Tippett. Phil Wachsmann also keeps quite busy playing with Evan Parker and Barry Guy in various projects. Those two Scandinavian players, Harri and Teppo have both worked with Cecil Taylor. Drum great Paul Lovens can be heard on records with Dr. Chadbourne, Cecil Taylor, Evan Parker, Globe Unity and Mario Schiano. Review next week.
CD for $14

SWELL/MATEEN/HEYNER/KUGEL - Slammin' the Infinite (Cadence 1175) Featuring Steve Swell on trombone, Sabir Mateen on various reeds, Matt Heyner on acoustic bass and Klaus Kugel on drums. I haven't heard of the drummer before, but the other three players are some of downtown's best and most consistent musicians. Review next week.
CD for $14

MARUCCI/BERGER/TCHICAI/LANE/WEBB - Genesis (Cadence 1178) We should all know the legendary saxist John Tchicai from the dozens of fine discs he has been on from the mid-sixties, like the great New York Art Quartet (ESP & DIW), as well as with Albert Ayler and Johnny Dyani. Adam Lane is one of the best and busiest bassists to move to town in the past few years and has two great CDs out with Mr. Tchicai on CIMP, a duo and a quartet offering. Don't know the other three players, but I hope to also review this one next week and clue you in.

DONALD MILLER / BLAISE SIWULA / MATT HANNAFIN - 11-23-03 [16 1/2 min. EP] (sachimay 9366) Since moving to New Orleans, we don't hear from Borbetomagus noise guitar terrorist Donald Miller very often. This is our loss. On the other hand, we do hear from saxist Blaise Siwula very often, as he runs the weekly improv series at ABC No Rio, the longest running series of its type, giving an opportunity to hundreds of musicians, known and unknown, from around the world. Blaise can be heard and/or seen on discs with William Hooker, Adam Lane and Dom Minasi. Percussionist Matt Hannafin is a friend and has played here at DMG on a few occasions and has a recording(s) with Sachimay mainman Dan DeChellis. While Donald Miller is not known for his subtle side, Matt often is. This 16 + minute EP was recorded at ABC No RIO (natch) and it brings out the more extreme side of each member of the trio. Donald tortures his electric guitar with files and other noisy, shredding devices while Blaise squawks and bleats and twists his notes into spiked fragments. Matt plays more aggressive and fractured than usual, reminding me of Charlie Noyes from the early downtown days. Blaise occasionally bring things back down to the earth with his more restrained tenor tone as Matt uses chains and cymbals, rubbing rather than banging. This music has an industrial quality like Borbeto in a more reflective moment, yet still dark without being too ugly. At the right volume (loud), it is just enough to scare your neighbors for just over a quarter hour.
CD-EP for $5

LEROY WILLIAMS QUARTET - Time Is (Jazz Child 07; USA) At 67, the precocious Leroy Williams is prepared to unleash his talents as a leader on the music world. Williams, a wonderfully melodic drummer who has been playing around New York for decades, always seems to be an important part of someone else's group - like Thelonious Monk, Anthony Braxton, Andrew Hill, Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, Booker Ervin, Lee Konitz, Clifford Jordan, Stan Getz, Barry Harris, Hank Mobley, Tommy Flanagan... the complete list is long and impressive. For his debut effort he has assembled a stirling group of people who know how to - as the old report card said - play well with others. Guitarist Roni Ben-Hur (who co-produced the album with Williams), pianist Richard Wyands, and bassist Walter Booker have the ability to listen to each other and interact seamlessly. And while Williams' drums are in the fore, he is his usually generous self, giving more than ample solo space to his sidemen. Ben-Hur's guitar has a strong effect on how themes are stated on the album, allowing Wyands far more freedom than he otherwise would have. It also opens up the range of the music, allowing for higher accents. The overall effect is to lighten the feel of the music, unexpected on a drummer's album. If there is someone who has been taken for granted even more than Williams, it's Wyands, who in recent years has been exhibiting some of his best playing efforts. Booker helps move the music along while never being obvious about it. Williams playing, as always, is supple and subtle. He never overpowers when using sticks, his brushwork is flawless, and he has a keen appreciation of the drum kit's dynamics. "My Rosita", a laid-back Latin-tinged Williams original, flows effortlessly. It's a catchy tune similar to "Star Eyes" and is subtly addictive: listen to it once, and you'll have a difficult time getting it out of your head. "Just for You", the second Williams original on the album, is a lovely slow ballad that also has the heard-it-somewhere-before quality of a well-crafted tune. Even when playing the John Coltrane barn-burner "Impressions", the musicians don't get carried away with themselves. Williams drives the tune along but never lets the temptation for bombast win out. A tasteful first effort by a deserving youngster for whom I foresee a long and successful career. - Mitchell Seidel, All About Jazz

HACO - Stereo Bugscope (IMJ 523) Starting with her work in After Dinner in the '80s, up to her current activity as a soloist and in projects like the female trio Hoahio, and Yesterday's Heroes, with Terre Thaemlitz, Haco has long been the reigning songstress of avant-garde music. But she isn't only a highly acclaimed vocalist and composer/lyricist; in recent years she's been exploring areas unrelated to vocalizing or pop melodies, with projects that focus on the sounds that surround us in our daily lives. One of these is U View Masters ('the sound collection and observation organization'), which produces a large-scale annual event; another is U Stereo Bugscope, which is documented on this album. The name 'Stereo Bugscope' refers to a performance system that detects oscillating sounds emitted by the circuitry of electronic devices. It also signifies the act of listening to the electromagnetic world that emerges from the inside of devices such as computers, cell phones, MD players, and wireless routers through the use of two inductive microphones (pickups). The oscillating-circuit sounds come from the IC board and clock, and the electromagnetic noise comes from the electrical current that turns the fan and drives the motor. These signals are ordinarily so faint as to be inaudible. The sound is then electronically amplified, which makes it at first seem very extreme, but at the same time amazingly beautiful.

RECENT STUNNERS REVIEWED BY DMG'S BRUCE LEE GALLANTER!

SCORCH TRIO - Luggumt (Rune Grammofon 2040) This is the second dynamic disc from Scorch Trio and we haven't heard a power trio this amazing since the Jimi Hendrix Experience or Cream or maybe even the Nels Cline Singers! Current legends, Scorch Trio is/are guitar god Raoul Bjorkenheim on electric guitar and electric viola da gamba, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on contrabass & Fender bass and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums & percussion. Although our good pal Raoul presently lives in NY, he is from Finland, while his two in-demand rhythm team cohorts come from Norway. Raoul remains one of most innovative and distinctive electric guitarists on the planet, having worked with Edward Vesala, Krakatua (both on ECM) plus he has a great disc on Cuneiform and that marvelous duo with Lukas Ligeti on TUM, from earlier this year. Immensely inventive bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and powerhouse drummer Paal Nilssen-Love have also worked with Mats Gustafsson in The Thing, amongst other Scandinavian greats. 'Luggumt' explodes right from the beginning and is an immensely powerful offering. When we played it loud in our store last Saturday afternoon, everyone in the store (including guitarist Andy Summers from the Police) jumped and screamed with delight saying, "Who the fuck is this!?!" This righteous platter begins and ends with a fire-spitting electric guitar power trio eruption that will knock you off your feet. The three central pieces quiet things down a bit, yet remain spirited and inventive throughout, often spooky and filled with suspense. Raoul really knows how to make his guitar talk, scream and blast away the doldrums of modern life. Ingebrigt and Paal are a perfect match and also never cease to amaze us as well. Check out their two solo efforts if you can locate them, Ingebrigt's solo effort is the only one we can offer. Word is that this here Scorch Trio might just do a tour here sometime soon. We can only hope and bide our precious time with this massive offering in hand. - BLG

JAMIE BAUM SEXTET - Moving Forward, Standing Still (Omnitone 15206) CD of the week! This unexpected treasure features Ms. Jamie Baum on flutes, Ralph Alessi on trumpets, Doug Yates on alto sax & bass clarinet, Tom Varner on French horn, George Colligan on acoustic & electric piano, Drew Gress on bass and Jeff Hirschfield on drums. I recall a couple of fine previous CDs (on GM & Konnex) from this fine flutist and composer, but that didn't prepare me for this fabulous gem. Ms. Baum is an extraordinary composer and was inspired contemporary classical giants like Stravinsky, Bartok and Ives. She even quotes a line from "Rites of Spring" within a piece of her own, but still it feels like an organic section of that work. She has put together a downtown all-star ensemble and they sound marvelous together. Her pieces always two or three lines moving at the same time, the constantly shifting patterns remain tight and always connected. No matter who is soloing, the band is in constant motion, playing these ever-intricate parts underneath, so tight, so nimble, with astonishing clarity. Jamie writes wonderfully warm yet dense harmonies for the horns, keeping the band on their toes throughout with her marvelous writing. Jamie is also a sensational flutist, taking a number of superb solos throughout this release. Another player who stands out is pianist George Colligan, who plays electric and acoustic piano with immense taste and takes a number of great solos. Zappa fans and other fusion heads should find some delight in pieces like "In the Journey", which moves at an ultra quick tempo and doesn't let up throughout, Alessi's crafty trumpet solo and Colligan's lightning-like piano solo are both just incredible. Sometimes two players solo at the same time and must swirl around each other in an intricate embrace. This is an immensely engaging work on many levels, I hope I get a chance to hear this sextet playing live. I caught Ms. Baum playing with Ursel Schlict's incredible Ex Tempore ensemble up at the Guelph Fest a few months back, both Jamie's soloing and Ursel's fine group were one the festivals highlights. 'Moving Forward' is certain to be one this year's finest offerings, so dig in... - BLG

GUNTER "BABY" SOMMER + ACHIM JAROSCHEK - Wokonda (Konnex 5109) An extraordinary piano and drums live set from the Magdeburger Jazz Sommer Festival in June of 2001. Mr. Sommer remains one of the best improvising drummers in Europe, having worked with Irene Schweizer and Cecil Taylor in a duo, had that longtime trio with Conrad Bauer & Peter Kowald, as well as the Zentralquartett that also includes Mr. Bauer. Mr. Jaroschek is a fine pianist but someone with whom I am unfamiliar. The only other recording I know of his is a duo with Peter Brotzmann, although the booklet also mentions a duo CD with Mani Neumeier. The duo performs two long suites, the "Winwanyag Suite" written by Achim and the "Shiwana Suite" by Gunter. The "Winwanyag Suite" shows two kindred spirits, moving together tightly, winding through hills and valleys, melodic moments, festive and focused. Lusciously recorded and well balanced, a perfect duo effort. This music is not very "out", it tells a gracious story, which is uplifting. The story builds through a few sections which eventually erupt tightly and powerfully to a grand conclusion. It sounds as if the Achim is putting his piano through some sort of echo device in one section, as the Gunter's cymbals also ascend and add a certain spacious quality. Gunter's "Shiwana Suite" has the drums and gamelan-like percussion at the center and tells another superb story. Both the percussion and piano are also through some spacey device that adds a mysterious and magical presence. There sounds like that might be a synth involved, but it is hard to tell. "Tis Tis Tas" is the final epic length excursion, that is another fabulous, story-like journey. Pretty marvelous overall. - BLG

MICHAEL J. SCHUMACHER - Stories (Quecksilber 8) Four compositions of electronic sound from composer Michael J. Schumacher of Diapason Gallery & Studio Five Beekman, (NYC). These pieces use computer generation in real time using random procedures. But there's nothing random sounding about this music. Michael has an amazing collection of samples including a large cast of musicians including Charles Curtis (cello), Donald Miller (guitar) and others that he uses as source material for these compositions. There are some amazing textures here, samples ranging from percussion, string and wind instruments to voice, guitar, trombone and synthesizer - all in an ever changing collage of sound. - David Beardsley

JON HASSELL With MICHAEL BROOK/NANA VASCONCELOS - Sulla Strada (Materiali Sonori; Italy) A ritual, ethnic and electronic atmospheres. with Michael Brook . Nana Vasconcelos "Jon Hassell doesn't lay down his trumpet in his 1982 score for an Italian stage production, but it sure flies incognito. Neither the music nor the liner notes convey anything about this abstraction of Jack Kerouac's On the Road: whatever happened on the stages where the Magazzini theater group performed, this conglomeration of bizarre effects must've been as much a distraction to the players as to anyone else. Hassell attempts to translate his otherworldly horn sound through keyboards that alternately hum and jitter. The results are pleasant and should intrigue listeners who find his other work too unfocused: "Passaggio a Nord-Ovest" builds and recedes with a grand sheen worthy of Philip Glass' stage work; other effects such as the bell-like trumpet melismas of "Temperature Variabili" are more elegant here than when they reappeared in Hassell's later work. But his finest music isn't just weird. It wipes away time rather than motion. Here, the trancelike feel the artist has always located in his Cameroonian sources is undone by synthesizer arrangements too spiky for ambient music and too static to provide any urgency, no matter how hard Nana Vasconcelos hammers his udu drum. And in any case, like most conglomerations, some parts are smoother than others. The strongest single piece of music here is nearly 22 and a half minutes worth of the ultimate cool-out, "Charm (Over 'Burundi Cloud')"; as a version two years earlier it was the whole second side of that terrific cool-out album, Possible Musics: Fourth World, Vol. 1. - John Young, AMG

WIM MERTENS/GLENN BRANCA - The Belly of an Architect [sndtck] (Materiali Sonori/Crepuscule; Italy) The soundtrack for the film of the same name by Peter Greenaway is largely the work of Dutch composer Wim Mertens, though the most interesting music is that of Glenn Branca, here in a supporting role. With the film's references to Baroque England, it's not surprising that Mertens' score makes many references to same, including the use of harpsichords and brass groupings, but the forced marriage between this style and the composer's tendency towards Philip Glass-type minimalism is uncomfortable. His melodies have a cloying sweetness that the introduction of faux-Elizabethan flourishes does nothing to suppress. On the other hand, American maverick composer Glenn Branca's "Pieces for String Orchestra" (quite different from his guitar symphonies) is striking, original, and refreshingly brutal. The disc, oddly, opens and closes with the exact same short piece, "Augustus," a deliciously brooding and romantic composition. This and the penultimate track, a longer string exposition of enticing roughness and mystery, almost make up for excess of cotton candy they sandwich. Branca fans will want to hear this work; they may simply have to judiciously employ the track selection device on their CD-FOR player. - Brain Olewnick, AMG

WIM MERTENS - A man of no fortune and with a name to come (Materiali Sonori/Crepuscule; Italy) Possibly one of Merten's best-known works!
CD FOR $20.00

WIM MERTENS - Maximizing the Audience (Materiali Sonori/Crepuscule; Italy) Wim Mertens' first album after dropping the group name Soft Verdict, the double-disc Maximizing the Audience consists of the music for Jan Fabre's play The Power of Theatrical Madness, which premiered in Venice, Italy, on June 11, 1984. This is Mertens' first foray into extended compositional forms; the pieces on earlier Soft Verdict records had been between two and nine minutes in length, but aside from the four-and-a-half-minute "The Fosse" and the 12-minute title track, all the pieces on Maximizing the Audience are close to 20 minutes long. Either the length or the music's function as a theatrical background makes these five pieces some of the most traditionally minimalist music of Mertens' career. For example, "Circles," featuring a single soprano saxophone over a bed of overdubbed interlocking clarinets, is pure process music in the tradition of early Steve Reich. "Whisper Me" is similar in compositional style, but its more traditional chamber music orchestration -- cello, viola, French horn, and piano -- gives the piece an entirely different texture. Mertens reaches back to earlier Soft Verdict compositions on Maximizing the Audience. "Lir," which like "The Fosse" takes its name from one of Ezra Pound's Cantos, is a piece for two pianos that incorporates the 1982 composition "Gentleman of Leisure" for one of its sections. Similarly, the title track quotes extensively from 1983's "Inergys." The results sound less like self-plagiarism than evidence of a desire to revisit earlier work with the added compositional complexity evinced throughout Maximizing the Audience. - Stewart Mason, AMG

WIM MERTENS/SOFT VERDICT - Vergessen (Materiali Sonori/Crepuscule; Italy) Although Belgian post-minimalist composer Wim Mertens did not begin recording his own music until the age of 28, once he started, he quickly made up for lost time. One of three Mertens releases from 1982, Vergessen is a brief album of pulsating melodies explored through a variety of arrangements and moods. This is not simple droning process music, although Mertens' debts to the early work of Steve Reich and Philip Glass are obvious. Mertens' skill, besides his ability to write surprisingly melodic lead lines over his hypnotic patterns, is in arrangement. Each of the six pieces here features an entirely unique group of instruments, from the simple four-hand piano exercise "4 Mains" to the eccentric pairing of skirling piccolo and growling crumhorn on the divine "Mildly Skeeming." The stop-start opening of the manic, almost circus-like "Inergys" has the wit of John Cage or Erik Satie. A lengthy reprise of "Inergys" closes the album in a much more subdued but no less fascinating fashion. In between, the additive "Multiple 12" is perhaps the most pedestrian and derivative piece on the album, but even it benefits from the intriguing textures of Frans Vos' overdubbed, intertwining viola parts and another appearance by Mertens' crumhorn, which sounds not unlike the drone of a bass bagpipe here. The album's loveliest track, "Circular Breathing," features an achingly beautiful soprano sax part somewhat reminiscent of Philip Glass' "Facades." As with all early Wim Mertens releases, Vergessen was originally released under the group name Soft Verdict before being reissued later under Mertens' own name. - Stewart Mason, AMG

WIM MERTENS/SOFT VERDICT - Struggle for Pleasure (Materiali Sonori/Crepuscule; Italy) The fourth release by Belgian post-minimalist composer Wim Mertens, 1983's Struggle for Pleasure, is a brief EP's worth of, as the composer puts it, "petite musique de chambre." It sounds a bit stuffy, but it's indicative of Mertens' talent that one of these six tracks, the hauntingly beautiful piano instrumental "Close Cover," actually became a hit on the continent when it was released as a single. Although "Close Cover" is the clear highlight of Struggle for Pleasure, the other five tracks are beautifully arranged pieces of modern chamber music. Although Mertens is clearly heavily influenced by American minimalist composers -- the title track and "Gentleman of Leisure" are unalloyed Philip Glass homages -- he brings his own brilliant compositional sense and a genuine gift for unexpected arrangements to these pieces. The opening "Tourtour," for soprano saxophone and harp, brings entirely unexpected textures out of both instruments, and "Salernes" keeps from sounding too much like early Terry Riley through the unexpected start-stop motif that reappears throughout the piece. Mertens, who began composing and recording at the age of 28, has the melodic sensibility of someone who grew up not only with the modern classical tradition, but with jazz and pop as well. Indeed, Mertens' piano style on "Close Cover" recalls the fragmented impressionism of Bill Evans. As a result, his music is accessible to more listeners than just the die-hard 20th century classical crowd, making the album title considerably less descriptive than it might otherwise be. Like all of Mertens' early releases, Struggle for Pleasure was originally released under the group name Soft Verdict and reissued under Mertens' own name in the late '80s. - Stewart Mason, AMG

LA 1919 with CHRIS CUTLER/CHARLES HAYWARD/ROBERTO ZORZI - Jouer Spielen to Play (Materiali Sonori/Auditorium; Italy) On 'Jouer Spielen To Play', La 1919's nucleus (Luciano Margorani on guitar, bass, and loops; Piero Chianura on samplers and synthesizers; Roberto Zorzi on guitar) is joined by two all-star avant-garde drummers: Charles Hayward (first five tracks) and Chris Cutler (last four). This album was recorded live in Italy on two separate occasion in April 1991 and in May 1992, hence the different drummers. This Italian band approaches free improvisation from a progressive rock perspective. The beginning of "Hanno Seppellito l'Uomo Sbagliato," with its 6/8 drum pattern, clavinet riff, and twangy guitar, could share affinities with some material by the best bands from the Canterbury scene (National Health, for instance). But through slightly sloppy transitions and a certain degree of uncertainty permeable to the music, one quickly finds out this is improvised material, even though it is riff-based for the most part. The first half of this album floats somewhere between avant-prog and experimental atmospheres (like the moody "Sheffield Wednesday," which includes some recitation by Hayward). On the tracks featuring Cutler, the music tends to be closer to Cassiber than Henry Cow.... - Francois Couture, AMG

THURSTON MOORE/EVAN PARKER/WALTER PRATI - The Promise (Materiali Sonori/Auditorium; Italy) Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore teamed up with veteran British free improvisation saxophonist Evan Parker and Italian bassist and sound processor Walter Prati for this free-form session. The trio produces exquisite results on a series of improvisations that focus on the combined sonic anomalies of the three instruments. Thurston Moore's guitar style is instantly recognizable regardless of the context, and on this avant-garde outing his myriad tones are to the fore and matched with the hypnotic circular drones of Evan Parker's saxophone. - Martin Walters, AMG

MAL WALDRON/CHRISTIAN BURCHARD - Into the light (Materiali Sonori; Italy) The collaborations between pianist Mal Waldron and vibist Christian Burchard [leader of the German world music/jazz-rock ensemble Embryo] are typically brooding and slow to get going, but once they pick up steam, they have all of the energy of Waldron's best releases of the 1960s and 1970s. The two men co-wrote four of the nine compositions on these 1989-1990 studio sessions, including the slowly evolving and rather long "From Darkness Into the Light," the tense miniature "Waters From the Waters," and the quartet piece "Gan Gan," which is named for the exotic hand percussion instrument (the gangan) played by Dieter Serfas on this somewhat whimsical work. Waldron also reprises songs written earlier in his career, including a haunting rendition of "Left Alone" that begins with Waldron strumming the piano's strings, and the crawling, well-titled "Lonely Nights." The CD ends with separate solo performances by both Waldron and Burchard. The pianist's "Embryo Solo" begins with an ominous cadence suggesting impending doom before it loses its intensity in a relatively calmer second half, which is unfortunately prematurely faded. "Giesing," the vibraphonist's coda, is brief and a bit overmodulated. This very enjoyable Italian CD is well worth acquiring. - Ken Dryden, AMG

NO-MAN - Speak (Materiali Sonori; Italy) Recordings from '87-'89 predating their first album; songs swathed in ambient spirit by Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness "In an interesting artistic choice, the next full No-Man album to appear after Wild Opera was, in ways, the band's first. Originally surfacing as a self-released cassette in the late '80s, Speak was reissued in the late '90s in slightly different form. Rather than a straight re-release, Bowness re-recorded all his vocals for the songs, though the music, with only two exceptions -- "Curtain Dream" and "Night Sky, Sweet Earth" -- stayed the same as when Wilson and founder member Ben Coleman recorded it. The result is an intriguing and sometimes revelatory revisit to the band's earliest days, with Bowness able to address what he felt were some of his vocal limitations or excesses at the time. Wilson's own musical work at this point is generally much more spare and low key than the full-bodied drama and dance which would soon emerge, but he's already clearly demonstrating his ear for both performance and production. Two noteworthy covers appear -- the first, "Pink Moon," is the Nick Drake song of note, confirming Bowness' long-held love for the singer years before his end-of-century popularity. Bowness' delivery is a winner, Wilson's soft guitar plucking and reversed playing textures a fine counterpart. The other remake is a Donovan cover -- not "Colours," which would later become a key early single, but "River Song," given a sweetly haunting performance on chiming guitar and backing keyboards, Bowness' singing sure and supple. Familiar cuts from later releases surface as well. Early B-side "Iris Murdoch Cut Me Down" is already there in structure if not in total form, while the dramatic conclusion to Loveblows and Lovecries, "Heaven's Break," appears here practically the same as the final take, sheer epic loveliness incarnate, with Richard Felix's guest harmonica adding an extra touch not found on the future version." - Ned Ragett, AMG

ADRIAN BELEW - Lone Rhino/Twang Bar King (Gott Discs; UK) Adrian Belew is easily one of rock's most prolific guitarists. He's lent his six-string talents to such notables as David Bowie, Frank Zappa, the Talking Heads, and Nine Inch Nails; played with King Crimson and the Bears; performed as a solo artist; produced bands like Jars of Clay; and wrote songs for others (such as Mariah Carey's "Daydream Interlude"). Here are his first two classic solo albums from 1982 and 1984 respectively, complete on one CD!:
'THE LONE RHINO': The first solo album from monster alternative guitarist Belew comes in the middle of Robert Fripp's early-'80s reformulation of King Crimson, so it's no surprise that many a Crimson-esque herky-jerky guitar run and melody line pops up among Belew's other trademark sound, that of the animal-turned-guitar wail. Songs similarly explore Belew's fascination with raw animal nature: "Big Electric Cat" (the album's obvious single) is exactly that, howling five-stringed felines over a propulsive Afro-funk beat, and "Animal Grace" is its less frazzled companion. But Belew can also be gentle, exploring guitar synth ambience on "Naive Guitar" and even performing a duet with his four-year-old daughter Audie Belew on "The Final Rhino." - Ted Mills, AMG
'TWANG BAR KING': Diversified and relentlessly creative -- giving space to new artistic and emotional expression -- this second solo album from guitarist Adrian Belew expands upon his already remarkable solo debut, though more than a few will be confused and put off by the opener, the Beatles' classic "I'm Down." Belew's inventiveness, both as a guitarist and as a songwriter, keep this album fresh and exciting at nearly every turn. One remarkable track, "She Is Not Dead" -- with lyrics sung over a backward version of "Hot Sun" from Lone Rhino -- has lyrics that fondly remember a departed loved one, astonishing in their beauty and depth of emotion. "The Rail Song" laments the disappearance of trains, referring to the rail system with the endearing pronoun "she." Psychotic, manic-paced instrumental "Paint the Road," utilizing Belew's signature MIDI guitar sounds, moves with a fury that will leave the listener gasping for breath. Musically still drawing from his experience with Talking Heads and Bowie, Belew is finding his own voice here and moving toward (though not completely capturing) a sound that is uniquely his. Of Historical note here is the band assembled for this album and susequent tour includes the famous Elvis Presley drummer Larry London - Marc W B Allender, AMG This is currently the only way to get both albums outside of prohibitively priced Japanese reissues.

CAMBERWELL NOW - All's Well: Meridian/The Ghost Trade/Greenfingers (RecRec 1015; Switzerland) Out of print for many, many years, it gives us great pleasure to be able to offer this out again. Excellent reissue collecting all material (two EPs and one full-length, plus one extra track culled from an old Touch cassette) by Charles Hayward's post-This Heat project, Camberwell Now. An often overlooked chapter in the career of drummer/vocalist/keyboardist/improvisor Charles Hayward, Camberwell Now continues the relentless experimentalism he championed in This Heat, though with less of an abrasive sound than he made in This Heat. This music has more of a Canturbury feel, particularly in Hayward's Wyatt-like, off-kilter vocals, and sits nicely beside Wyatt's "Old Rottenhat" - both records seamlessly blend the personal and the political with a hearty dose of resignment and melancholy. Sonically, the songs collected here fuse layers of dizzying drum work, tense guitar figures, swirling washes of ambience from cymbals, melodicas, and keyboards, and inventive tape manipulation. Long overshadowed by the band that came before it, this material is WAY overdue for reappraisal and the recognition that it so rightly deserves. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! - Mikey "IQ" Jones @ DMG.

DAVID THOMAS - Monster: Sound Of The Sand/Variations On A Theme/More Places Forever/Monster Walks The Winter Lake/Blame The Messenger [4 CD set] (Cooking Vinyl) David Thomas has been the bizarre and wonderful voice of Pere Ubu since the band's emergence from the Cleveland underground in the mid-'70s. In that capacity, he's attracted critical accolades from every quarter, if not teen idol status or platinum sales -- which isn't completely puzzling, given that he tends to write songs about birds, dinosaurs and hats, that he sings in a sort of strangled warble, and that his early stage name was Crocus Behemoth. If Pere Ubu is obscure, the solo albums Thomas made in the early to mid-'80s are downright abstruse; until this five-disc set came out, every single one was long out of print. The four studio albums and one live set included here create an entire musical world that is both inviting and forbidding. David Thomas has always been able to surround himself with a shifting constellation of genius -- from Richard Thompson to reedman Lindsay Cooper, drummers Chris Cutler and Anton Fier, and Ubu bassist Tony Maimone -- all of whom have managed, over the years, to serve his singular muse in diverse ways. The horns and rock guitar of "The Sound of the Sand" and "Variations on a Theme" give way to the spare but lovely textures of "More Places Forever," on which Thomas is accompanied only by bassoon, bass and drums. On "Monster Walks the Winter Lake" (which shares a disc with "More Places"), Thomas goads the band into helping him write a song about improvisation and lurches through a song cycle written through the eyes of a monster at various stages of its life. "Don't Blame the Messenger" is a bracing rock record by a Thomas band called the Wooden Birds, who subsequently looked around at each other and realized they were Pere Ubu, just like the old days; four more Ubu albums followed before that particular lineup flew apart again. The last disc is 74 minutes of live recordings by Thomas's latest group, the Two Pale Boys, consisting of Thomas, a guitarist and a trumpeter. If it sounds kind of sparse, don't be fooled: the guitar player is all MIDI'd up, and the trumpeter has some kind of machine as well, so they might as well be a marching band at times. Thomas covers himself (Ubu faves "Kathleen" and "Busman's Honeymoon" both appear) and continues to indulge the Beach Boys obsession that first showed itself in the "Sloop John B" cover on his first solo album, back in 1981. There is absolutely nothing here that will convince the unconverted, but this box is a gold mine for some of us. - Rick Anderson, AMG

TYRANNOSAURUS REX [MARC BOLAN] - A Beard Of Stars [Expanded Edition] (A&M; UK) This expanded edition has 16 BONUS CUTS in addition to the original 14 from the LP! 'A Beard of Stars is the most consistent Marc Bolan project, second only to Electric Warrior (1971). Tasteful, hip playing, simple, catchy pop structures, and short, easy-to-consume compositions make this an excellent starting point for the uninitiated. This album is the last release before the band changed its name to the simpler, cooler T. Rex. A Beard of Stars is the perfect marriage of acoustic and electric rock. Mickey Finn's tabla and clay drums enliven these recordings with an upbeat, eastern tone best exemplified on "Pavilions of Sun" and "Dragon's Ear." His performances are tight and genuinely complement Bolan's mythical, flower-child lyrics. Bolan's voice is magnetic, an appealing, hip delivery so integral to the atmosphere his music evokes. One of his signature tunes, "By the Light of a Magical Moon," clearly illustrates this point. His acoustic/electric guitar playing is exquisitely simple, clean, and at times beautiful as on "A Day Laye." In contrast, the finale, "Elemental Child," an electrifying guitar-driven rock statement, presents the instrument in its rawest form. Here, Bolan's overindulgent performance epitomizes the term "rock guitar" -- his style, manic and aggressive, his sound, piercing. - David Ross Smith, AMG

TYRANNOSAURUS REX [MARC BOLAN] - Prophets Seers & Sages, The Angels Of The Ages [Expanded Edition] (A&M; UK) This expanded edition has 14 BONUS CUTS in addition to the original 14 from the LP! The most underrated of Tyrannosaurus Rex's four albums, Prophets Seers And Sages was recorded just six months after their debut and adds little to the landscapes which that set mapped out. There is the same reliance on the jarring juxtaposition of rock rhythms in a folky discipline; the same abundance of obscure, private mythologies; the same skewed look at the latest studio dynamics, fed through the convoluted wringer of the duo's imagination - the already classic pop of the opening "Debora" is further dignified by its segue into the same performance played backwards, a fairly groundbreaking move at a time when even the Beatles were still burying such experiments deep in the mix.
But if the album itself found the duo rooted to the musical spot, still it delivered some of Marc Bolan's most resonant songs. The nostalgia-flavored "Stacey Grove" and the contrarily high-energy "Conesuela" were as peerless as any of Bolan's more feted compositions. Equally intriguing is the confidence which exudes from "Scenescof Dynasty," a successor of sorts to the last album's "Scenescof," but presented with just percussion and some strange vocal noises to accompany Bolan's singing - at a time when "singing" was maybe not the term a lot of listeners would employ for his vocals. The excited "one-two-three-four" count-in only adds to the dislocation, of course. Finally, the owlishly contagious "Salamanda Palaganda" offers a first-hand peek into the very mechanics of Bolan's songwriting. Other composers, stuck for a rhyme, either reach for the thesaurus or abandon the lyric altogether. Bolan simply made one up, and in the process created a whole new language - half nonsense, half mystery, but wholly intoxicating. Just like the rest of the album, in fact. - Dave Thompson, AMG

TYRANNOSAURUS REX [MARC BOLAN] - My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair..But Now They Are Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows [Expanded Edition] (A&M; UK) This expanded edition has 16 BONUS CUTS in addition to the original 12 from the LP, which includes the mono versions of the LP cuts! Until he joined John's Children, in March, 1967, Bolan had never even owned an electric guitar. And once he quit the band, it is said, he abandoned it as quickly as everything else which that band represented - freakbeat pop, adrenalined psych, electric soup. In fact, Bolan never lost sight of his electric destiny, even as Tyrannosaurus Rex sawed away on their acoustic toys, a point which producer Tony Visconti cottoned onto the first time he ever saw the duo play, "Marc sitting crosslegged on stage playing his strange little songs in a wobbly voice, while Steve Took was banging on his bongos." Visconti himself was a novice producer, "holding out for something really different and unusual. I thought Marc was perhaps that." He was, and the album which he and Took delivered emphasized all the qualities which Visconti had spotted that night at the UFO club.
My People Were Fair approaches the listener from a totally unique angle. The Bolan voice, hardened from the slight warble which carried through his early solo material (and is still noticeable on the back-ups he performed for John's Children), remains uncompromising, but it blends so perfectly with the bizarre, almost eastern-sounding instrumentation that the most lasting impression is of a medieval caravansary whose demented Bedouin cast has suddenly been let loose in a recording studio.
It is an irresistible affair, if absolutely a child of its psychedelically-inclined time - "Frowning Atahuallpa" even recruits DJ John Peel to read a Tolkien-esque fairytale. But one of Bolan's loveliest compositions is here - the gentle, and deceptively melodic "Child Star," layered by harmonies which hit you sideways and are all the more mighty for it; one of his weirdest, too, is included, the mutant fairydance of "Strange Orchestras," which sounds like it was recorded by one. Together with fellow highlights "Chateau In Virginia Waters" and "Graceful Fat Sheba," both are so far ahead of the the material Bolan had been composing just a year earlier (subsequently made available on the Hard On Love/Beginning Of Doves retrospective), that the inclusion of the "oldies" "Hot Rod Mama" and "Mustang Ford" is almost disappointing.
They are, however, the only sour notes sounded on an album whose magic is discernable from so many different angles that it is hard to say which is its most astonishing factor. But it's hard not to be drawn to the actual dynamics of My People Were Fair, the uncanny way Tyrannosaurus Rex take the slightest musical instruments, pixiephones, glockenspiels and a Chinese gong included, and make them sound like the heaviest rock'n'roll band on the planet. Anyone could play power chords, after all. But who else would play them on acoustic guitar? - Dave Thompson, AMG

CURRENTLY OUT-OF-STOCK [sold out before the newsletter went out!] BUT BACK REAL SOON...

TYRANNOSAURUS REX [MARC BOLAN] - Unicorn [Expanded Edition] (A&M; UK) This expanded edition has 15 BONUS CUTS in addition to the original 15 from the LP! The third Tyrannosaurus Rex album, and their debut U.S. release, Unicorn was also the first to steadfastly state the game plan which Marc Bolan had been patiently formulating for two years -- the overnight transformation from underground icon to overground superstar. Not only does it catch him experimenting with an electric guitar for the first time on record, it also sees Steve Peregrin Took exchange his bongos for a full drum kit, minor deviations to be sure, but significant ones regardless. And listen closely and you can hear the future. The opening "Chariots of Silk" sets the ball rolling, as slight and lovely as any of Bolan's early songs, but driven by a tumultuous drum roll, a pounding percussion which might be the sound of distant gunfire, but could as easily be a petulant four year old, stamping around an upstairs apartment. Either way, it must have been a rude awakening for the bliss-soaked hippy acid-heads who were the duo's most loyal audience at the time - and, though the album settled down considerably thereafter, that initial sense of alarm never leaves. By the time one reaches the closing "Romany Soup," a nursery jingle duet for voice and whispered secrets, you feel like you've just left the wildest roller coaster on earth. If the peaks are astonishing, however, the troughs are merely comparative. "Pon A Hill is certainly more remarkable for the backing chorus of absurd twitters than for a fairly standard Bolan melody. But "Cat Black," a song which had been around since before Bolan joined John's Children, comes on like a lost Spector classic, with apoplectic percussion and a positively soaring, wordless chorus. "She Was Born to Be My Unicorn," meanwhile, drifts by on piping Hammond and tympani, while "Warlord of the Royal Crocodiles" is no less resonant than such a title demands. Reprising his role on the duo's first album, DJ John Peel reappears to read a brief children's story, but that truly is the only real point of cointact between Unicorn and its predecessors. Indeed, in a moment of pure prescient enthusiasm, Melody Maker's review tagged the once painstakingly eclectic acoustic duo "electrified teenybop" and, had things not gone horribly awry between Bolan and Took during their first US tour that same year, all that T Rex was to achieve in the first years of the next decade might have instead fallen into place during the final years of the '60s. Because again, you can already hear the storm brewing. - Dave Thompson, AMG

AND, WE SHOULD MENTION THIS GREAT 'TRIBUTE' ALBUM FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE NEW TO OUR WARES...

MARC BOLAN [V.A.] - Great Jewish Music (Tzadik 7126) Highlighting music by some of the greatest Jewish composer in the past several decades, The Great Jewish Music series has paid tribute to first Burt Bacharach, Serge Gainsbourg and now British glam-rock pioneer Marc Bolan. Named as a primary influence by seminal punk rockers like the Ramones and Johnny Rotten, Marc Bolan and his group T. Rex forged a new music in the early 70's, confounding audiences and critics alike with his mercurial style changes and experimentations. Rejecting the complex time signatures and advanced harmonies in fashion at the time, Bolan went back to the basics, bringing a primitive raunchy edge to his colorful cast of fantasy characters. This compilation features a spectacular lineup of some of the most adventurous and creative rockers around, and is sure to be one of the most popular CD presented on the Tzadik label to date.. "Give me a C-Major chord and I'll give you a thousand melodies." - Marc Bolan
