KAZUE SAWAI/MICHEL DONEDA/KAZUO IMAI/LE QUAN NINH/TETSU SAITO - Une Chance Pour L'ombre (Victo 094; Canada) Kazue Sawai: koto; Michel Doneda: saxophone soprano et sopranino; Kazuo Imai: Guitare acoustique; Le Quan Ninh: percussion; Tetsu Saitoh: contrebasse. "This momentous world premiere meeting took place during the 2003 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville. There were noisier, more blustery concerts and higher profile musicians in town that week in late spring, but few shows had such a high degree of quiet strength and empathetic grace." -- John Woodard, liner notes, October 2004

MAGMA - Kohntarkosz Anteria (Seventh REX XX; France) If my Kobaian doesn't fail me, the 45 minute 'Kohntarkhosz Anteria' was written circa 1972/1973, but never officially recorded, although a tiny piece of it appears on Inedits, and other little bits were grabbed and used in various other works (most notably the live versions of Kohntarkosz from 1974, which can be heard on the BBC album). Ever since reactivating Magma in the mid/late 90's, the band has really turned into a great unit on their own and one that, imo, compares quite favorably to their 'glory period'; the only thing lacking was new material. This isn't exactly a completely new, but still, as someone who has been waiting desperately for the band to put out something that isn't a re-recording of a 1970's work, I gotta say that is completely fine, and if it had been heard in 1974, it would be held in the same high esteem as MDK, Wurdah Itah or Kohntarkosz. Can't give anything much higher praise than that! A fantastic, clear recording that features: Stella Vander, Isabelle Feuillebois, Antoine Paganotti, Himiko Paganotti (vocals), James Mac Gaw (guitar), Emmanuel Borghi and Frederic d'Oelsnitz (Fender Rhodes and grand pianos), Philippe Bussonnet (bass) and the ol' badass himself, Mr. Zebehn Strain de Geustaah [Christian Vander] on drums, percussions and vocals, Packaged in a really nice digipack with two inserts [which raises the cost here], including a huge booklet with the entire libretto, so you can memorize all the words and sing along without looking, just like I did with my A&M LP copy of Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh that included the libretto when I was in High School...

BILL BRUFORD/MICHIEL BORSTLAP - Every Step A Dance, Every Word A Song (Summerfold 06 VPT; UK) These recordings are taken from a personal archive of the dates the Bruford-Borstlap duo have played since their first meeting at the Nijmegen Festival in Holland, in 2002. The nature of the music is conversational. In a small room, where most of the tracks were recorded, this may have the intimacy of a dinner table conversation between old friends ('Round Midnight, Every Step). But in a big hall, things may quite naturally become a lot more muscular and assertive ( 16 Kingdoms, Swansong ). They are quite capable of sounding like a band with three times as many people in it, yet at no time do they lose authorship, identity, or immediacy. The title of this album sets the scene for the pure pleasure found in these recordings, which ably display the passion both Bruford and Borstlap have for free expression and spontaneous performance. Released for the first time on CD these performances will appeal not only to fans of both Bill Bruford and Michiel Borstlap but also to all lovers of cutting edge, spontaneous music of any genre.

BILL BRUFORD/MICHIEL BORSTLAP - In Concert In Holland [DVD] (Summerfold 07 VPT; UK) This 90 minute DVD was filmed in two locations in Holland and brings together two of the leading lights in modern improvised music, the virtuoso Dutch pianist Michiel Borstlap, and British drummer Bill Bruford. The main programme of approximately one hour of concert footage from Nijmegen is accompanied by a further half-hour of backstage footage and bonus tracks from Maastricht. Each DVD is one of a limited edition of 2000 that comes with a bonus audio CD of the DVD soundtrack, and is individually numbered. Neither quite rock, nor quite jazz, both men believe in a music with immediacy, with authorship, and without boundaries or safety nets. Their instant compositions resonate with happy coincidence, brilliant technique, human accident, unforced error, missed chances, astonishing good luck, hidden intentions, oblique references and the full catalogue of happenstance that is mirrored in all human existence, and is just the kind of place in which both men can live and breathe and have their being. This wonderfully evocative live DVD captures two great musicians pushing the boundaries of music and particularly jazz.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/MARTIN TETREAULT - 1. Grrr (AM 131; Canada) In the spring of 2003, Martin Tetreault and Otomo Yoshihide toured part of Europe in a 15-date, 16-day marathon. Out of these improv concerts, six were captured on various media : CDr, dat and minidisc. The thought of preserving these moments came naturally to the ears of our two turntablists and was motivated by the renewed pleasure of playing together and of course by the quality of the music, which, night after night, explored new forms ranging from sonic economy to something much harsher. On this first installment in a planned trilogy, they present their noisiest material, hence the very apt title 1. Grrr.

HUBBUB - Hoib (Matchless 60; UK) Third CD from this French improvisational group, featuring: Frederic Blondy, Bertrand Denzier, Jean Luc Guionnet, Jean-Sebastien Mariage, Edward Perraud. 2nd release on Matchless, they also have a CD on For Four Ears. "From a line, and from's it's slowness, that vibrates, that, trembles, I say, that it is, no more talkative, than a cloud, of its likeness, or than a, gust of wind, in the trees, Now, felling, compelled, to produce words, I say, that it is no, more silent, than a fearful dog, than a satisfied cat, or, than a disturbed, cow, then all bark, purr, or moo, One calls, and the world, answers, One keeps silent, and the world, calls us. This is to be, at the heart, of a line, that vibrates, that trembles, The line dwells, on the side, of the, w o r l d."

DOM MINASI QUARTET - Quick Response (CDM 1005; USA) Featuring master jazz guitarist Dom Minasi, the ever-inspired Mark Whitecage on alto sax, Kyle Koehler on organ and John Bollinger on drums. 'Quick Response' is the exciting new release by versatile virtuoso guitarist-composer-arranger Dom Minasi. The follow up to Dom's acclaimed 'Time Will Tell' finds him returning to the organ group concept he began exploring back in the eighties before he stopped performing publicly. The new unit, featuring organist Kyle Koehler, alto saxophonist Mark Whitecage, and drummer John Bollinger, is as multitalented and flexible as the leader himself, allowing the band to immerse itself in the soulful organ jazz tradition, while at the same time turning it on its side to create music that is emotionally satisfying, intellectually stimulating and insistently forward looking.
Dom is of course, one of the unsung heroes of cosmic, complex electric jazz guitar, he really has no peers, he is his own man. Check him out & you will be blown away.

CHARLIE WATTS & THE TENTET With EVAN PARKER - Watt's At Scott's [2 CD set] (Sanctuary 63632; USA) During breaks from drum duties with the Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts used his time wisely by forming a band that could provide an outlet for his deep knowledge and love of jazz, especially bop. Watts assembled some of the U.K.'s finest musicians for this tentet, including bandleader, composer, arranger, and alto and soprano saxophonist Peter King, trumpeter, flugelhornist, and arranger Gerard Presencer, and the innovative avant-garde hero Evan Parker on tenor and soprano saxophones. The musical ground they covered over three nights in June 2001 at Ronnie Scott's club in London was captured on the Sanctuary double-disc Watts at Scott's. These 15 tracks provide an ample showcase for lyrical soloing and lively ensemble playing on familiar compositions by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, and Miles Davis, along with equally impressive originals from various tentet members, including Presencer's Latin-ish take on the Stones' "Satisfaction" called "Faction." Whether you're a jazz aficionado, casual listener, or even a Rolling Stones fan, upon hearing this set you'll agree that Charlie Watts is truly in his element.

JESSE SHARPS QUINTET & P.A.P.A. [PAN AFRIKAN PEOPLES ORCHESTRA] - Sharps And Flats (Nimbus 3702; USA) with Nate Morgan, Carl Burnette, Sabir Mateen...and two cuts [live from '79 and studio from '85] WITH the late Horace Tapscott!!!

BORAH BERGMAN/ANTHONY BRAXTON/PETER BROTZMANN - Eight By Three (Mixtery 01; USA) Pianist Borah Bergman's name is listed first, but this recording is actually a free improvisation session where all three participants share equal weight. While Anthony Braxton and Peter Brotzmann have been active and extremely influential since the mid-'60s in the same general circle, this was their first recording together in 20 years. Both have their idiosyncratic styles, so a head-to-head meeting was likely to yield fascinating results. Throw in Bergman, whose single-mindedness is second to none, and one might expect well incendiary fireworks!

DAVID ROSENBOOM/J.B. FLOYD/TRICHY SANKARAN - Suitable For Framing (Mutable 17517; USA) Reissue of this obscure Canadian album from 1975, originally issued on the A.R.C. Record label, with extended mixes and bonus material from the same period. Performed by David Rosenboom and J. B. Floyd (pianos, one in each channel) & Trichy Sankaran on South Indian percusion (mrdangam and kanjira). "On April 19th, 1975, at Northern Illinois University, three musicians met in a milestone event from which emerged a unique, improvising trio with two pianos and South Indian percussion. Fortunately, it was recorded and excerpts released on a long out of print LP. This CD recaptures the essence of the entire evening of musical discovery with previously unreleased music recovered from digitally reprocessed tapes recently discovered in diverse states of preservation."

L [HIROYUKI USUI] - Holy Letters (VHF 84; USA) "Recorded in 1989 and 1990, Hiroyuki Usui's barely circulated masterpiece of deeply felt self-expression beautifully captures the spirit and substance of a half-dozen key sub-underground pillars of sound. Working with guitar, vocals, vibes, harmonium, bass, drums, cello, field recordings, digeridoo, and more, Usui blends delicate folk, psychedelia, and experimental sounds into a mostly subdued but undeniably glowing suite. The layered but careful instrumentation on the epic title track and 'Troll' backs the alternately plain-spoken and crooning vocals perfectly. Odd touches like snatches of throat singing and bowed vibraphone leap out of the mix at just the right time. There are overt references to the blues (the first track is an oblique cover of 'Cold Was The Ground') -- but other than the occasional slide guitar touch, the connection is overwhelmingly in the timeless feeling and atmosphere. For anyone who's into Richard Youngs, Popol Vuh, Six Organs of Admittance, Tim Buckley, acid-folk, or Japanese underground, this is an essential purchase. VHF's reissue includes the entire CD and seven-inch from the original package, plus a tenminute bonus track from the original sessions. "

NED ROTHENBERG HAS FOUND A FEW MORE COPIES OF HIS HARD TO GET 'MOERS' CDS...
NED ROTHENBERG DOUBLE BAND With THOMAS CHAPIN - Overlays (Moers 2074; Germany) This is Rothenberg's Double Band: a sextet with the leader and Thomas Chapin on alto saxophones, Kermit Driscoll and Jerome Harris on electric bass guitars, and Billy Martin on drum kit as well as Adam Rudolph on other percussion. They use funky R&B beats as a vehicle for free, creative blowing within mostly structured yet extrapolated frameworks. Rothenberg's extended, overblown harmonic technique contrasts Chapin's more tonal approach. Not for timid creative-music listeners, nor new age mavens, but those who enjoy gutsy, meat and potatoes modern music will appreciate this. Recommended! - Michael G Nastos, AMG

NED ROTHENBERG DOUBLE BAND With THOMAS CHAPIN - Real and Imagined Time (Moers 3006; Germany) As the rhythms kick in on "Railbread" and the band starts churning through a rollicking groove, a sense of poignancy is unavoidable -- not the feeling one would normally expect from such an upbeat form of jazz-funk. But here they come, the two altoists up front in the stereo speakers, Ned Rothenberg to the right and [the late] Thomas Chapin to the left: two unbeatable downtown New York saxophonists, who -- along with the other four stalwarts of the Ned Rothenberg Double Band -- are ideally suited to realizing the bandleader's conception for this most satisfying amalgam of jazz, funk, rock, and avant-garde music styles. On the evidence of Real and Imagined Time, the group was on an upward trajectory when the CD was recorded in May and July of 1993. It's sometimes tempting to credit drummer Jim Black with enlivening every project he's in; let's just say that there's no evidence here to contradict that theory. Black and Billy Martin work together on drums as perfectly as Rothenberg and Chapin on saxophones; like the reedmen, they seem more like one musician with the physical resources of two -- that's how closely their playing is integrated. Rounding out the rhythm section -- or perhaps squaring off, given their sharp and percussive attacks -- are Chris Wood and Jerome Harris on electric basses, punchy and nailing the groove from start to finish. It's hard to imagine that it would be anything less than a tremendous recording -- and one to provoke the same mixture of joy and sadness as Real and Imagined Time. - Dave Lynch, AMG

NED ROTHENBERG DOUBLE BAND With THOMAS CHAPIN - Parting (Moers 3012; Germany) Featuring Ned Rothenberg & Thomas Chapin on saxes & flute; Jerome Harris on electric guitar & bass; Tony Scherr on basses and Michael Sarin & Samm Bennett on drums. Finally!! This is the third (studio) recording from one our favorite downtown all-star bands. Recorded in May of 1996 and finally seeing the light of day some 8 years later on a label that has had no US distribution in almost as long! Ned's phenomenal double band picked up where Ornette's Prime Time, also a double band, left off and blended its own unique avant/electric-jazz with elements of free, fractured and funky rhythms. What made this band so special was the way that Ned and Thomas played together and pushed each other into stratospheric flights of fancy. Both of these cats are amongst my favorite (alto mostly) saxists and both are resourceful, inventive, passionate and powerful players. Ned has written some wonderful, infectious, sly and sumptuous tunes here with inspired solos from each member of the band. Another under-recognized hero of ours is guitarist Jerome Harris who seems be playing acoustic and electric bass guitars most often nowadays, here he gets to stretch out a bit play a few fine electric guitar solos. Since this gem was recorded Samm Bennett has moved to Japan and our kind friend Thomas Chapin died of leukemia in February of 1998, a tremendous loss to those who knew and heard him play, as well as those who will still be awed by his incredible playing. This superb offering is dedicated to him and Ned has written some bittersweet liner notes in his memory. Moers Music still has no domestic distribution for the near future, so this essential release can only be found from your friends at DMG for now.

HISTORIC REISSUES AND RESTOCKS... AND THE 'CABARET VOLTAIRE - DOUBLEVISION' DVD!!!...
L.A.F.M.S. [LOS ANGELES FREE MUSIC SOCIETY] - The Lowest Form Of Music [10 CD Box set] (RRR 17; USA) The Los Angeles Free Music Society was a complete screwball fringe music collective that peaked in the true heart of darkness -- America in the mid 70s. They self-released LPs, 7"s and cassettes in the dawn before real independent distribution and the myth that surrounds those sacred pressings has in recent years become feverish. Mixing pure sonic weirdness, musique concrete, free improv blare, fringe-noise-nonsense and much moret. This unbelievable box of 10 CDs, which took a number of years to finally assemble, features music by Le Forte Four, The Doo Dooettes, Airway, Tom Recchion, Rick Potts, Dennis Duck, Fredrik Nilsen, Joe Potts, Chip Chapman, Monique et Aviv, John Duncan and CV Massage, and more. Comes with a stunning 36 page booklet of full color photographs, 60 page book of extensive notes by the many contributors; all encased in a sturdy, letter-pressed chipboard box.

Disk 1 is a remix of the long o/p RRR DBLP (with this new retrospective note: "Fake electro acoustic music dedicated to GRM/INA, Wergo, DG, Phillips & Erato recording artists"). Disk 2 is called "Loop Panic Limited," and is a recording of loud/dense cut ups from various records; recorded 1985-86. One of the classic Merzbow recordings

WHITE NOISE [DAVID VORHAUS] - An Electric Storm (Island 09482; UK) Classic electron-psych LP from '68 (released by Island). Spearheaded by one David Vorhaus, a staff member at BBC studios and widely rumored as co-creator of the music to BBC television's cult classic Dr. Who series. With Paul Lytton on percussion; Val Shaw, Annie Bird, and John Whiteman on vocals.
Originally released by Island Records in 1969, the debut White Noise album also featured Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, who had worked for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
The instrumentation consisted of early electronic instruments and a huge amount of tape manipulation, the standard techniques of the Workshop in those days. The album emerges here on CD - in a "matrix mixed" format
"David Vorhaus, a pioneer of sound technology and inventor of the Kaleidophon [visually similar to a Chapman Stick] electronic musical instrument, sent the world of the 1960's into an aural spin as cult originator of the first White Noise album, "An Electric Storm". That definitive electronic release trickled through the consciousness of the times offering sounds until then unheard by human ears - it went on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.
In hindsight, the album seems so far ahead of its time that it has taken the world a while to catch up. Only now are DJ's, producers and dance experimentalists acknowledging the influence of the Vorhaus soundscapes on their music.
Always obsessed by the farthest reaches and possibilities of technology and musical creation (understandable when you have, as Vorhaus did, a background both in classical orchestral bass playing and electronics/physics), he has become one of the granddaddies of electronic music."

SUICIDE [MARTIN REV/ALAN VEGA] - Suicide [Expanded 2 CD edition] (Mute 9104; USA) 2000 double CD reissue of the astounding debut Suicide album (originally released by Red Star in 1978). Suicide were Alan Vega (voice) and Martin Rev (electronics). First disc features the original album; the 2nd disc features the legendary 23 Minutes Over Brussels session (live at CBGB's, 5/25/78), which was originally issued as a flexi-disc. Packaged with a 1996 interview in the booklet between Rev, Vega & Red Star's Marty Thau. Classic punk-electronic trance that sounds as intense and vivid as ever and unlike some of their peers from the era, still as dangerously futuristic.
2 CD set for $18
SUICIDE [MARTIN REV/ALAN VEGA] - The Second Album + The First Rehearsals [Expanded 2 CD edition] (Mute 9105; USA) 2000 re-release (previously on Blast First UK). "The re-release of Suicide's second 1980 'pop' album, produced by Rick Ocasek.
CD1 features the full album + extra tracks in the form of the A ("Dream Baby Dream" -- their biggest 'hit') & B ("Radiation") sides of the single of the time.
CD2 is 45 minutes of previously unreleased tracks from their first rehearsals in 1975. The fourteen tracks show a surprisingly commercial bent, being mostly songs rather than being nascent versions of the material that appears on the first album. Suicide fans will have their first chance to see how the band evolved. Booklet features a lengthy interview and sports a wild new cover showing the boys in their 1972 street clothes.

CABARET VOLTAIRE - Mix-Up (Mute 9172; USA) 2002 edition of 1st Cabaret Voltaire album, originally released by Rough Trade in 1979. Cabaret Voltaire were Chris Watson, Stephen Mallinder & Richard H. Kirk. Classic proto-industrial/rock. "Impressively harnesses noise, primitive rhythm box percolations, tape loops, garbled vocals, and blasts of Farfisa. 'Kirlian Photograph' is an ugly slab of dub with frizzling snaps of white-heat buzz, clunky percussion, and a plodding bass line forming its skanking, roiling rhythm. Both the bass and incidental vocals are relegated to the back of the mix as the piercing detritus takes center stage. A cover of the Seeds' 'No Escape' evidences Cabaret Voltaire's paradox as a seemingly anti-rockist band who -- at their heart (for the first several years, at least) -- was a garage band.

CABARET VOLTAIRE - The Voice of America (Mute 9173; USA) 2002 edition of the third CV album, originally released on Rough Trade in 1980. Assembled in the seclusion of the band's own studio in Sheffield called Western Works, as were Mix-Up and Red Mecca.
CD for $16
CABARET VOLTAIRE - Red Mecca (Mute 9174; USA) 2002 edition of the 6th CV album, originally released in 1980. "It's a taught, dense, horrific slab lacking a lull. Dashes of Richard H. Kirk's synthesizer are welded to Chris Watson's tape effects for singed lashes of white noise, best heard on the lurching 'Sly Doubt' and the jolting 'Spread the Virus.' Throughout, Mallinder's sinister jibber jabbering punctuates the high-pitched menace. The record contains all the characteristics that have made the Sheffield group such an influential entity when it comes to electronic music." -- AMG.

THE INTERNATIONAL SUBMARINE BAND - Safe at Home (Sundazed 6206; USA) Just before Gram Parsons cut a wide swath through American music with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-era Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros., he forged a new musical genre with the seminal 1967 country-rock sides he cut with his legendary International Submarine Band. Sundazed Music, in conjunction with Shiloh Records, is proud to present a compact disc release of the ISB's highly collectible Safe At Home album, taken for the first time from the pristine, two-track stereo LHI-label masters, now sporting accurate original artwork, rare photos and a revealing new essay by noted author Sid Griffin. We've added the last piece to the jigsaw puzzle by remarrying the originally unissued track 'Knee Deep In The Blues' (recorded during the Safe At Home sessions) to this resoundingly important musical statement. It's a young, confident Gram Parsons here, showing the world he's ready for business and firing the first volley in an amazing -- if too brief -- career that would soon stand the rock 'n' roll world on its ear.

DANCEHALL STRINGBUSTERS! [V.A.] - Crunchy Guitar Instros from the 60s (Sundazed 11146; USA) Following hot on the heels of our groundbreaking Lost Legends of Surf Guitar series, Sundazed's new earth-shaking compilation -- Dancehall Stringbusters! Crunchy Guitar Instros From The '60s -- is an instant Friday afternoon kegger that features a stunning array of hallowed, guitar-slinging heroes. From the paint-blistering sounds of Link Wray to the reverb-swamped work of Al Casey, Stringbusters spotlights wall-to-wall, rawboned instrumentals from revered guitar heroes like the Fireballs, Wes Dakus and Roy Buchanan (undercover here as the Secrets). And we've also added a large helping of forgotten wirebending warriors that are every bit as devastating; Teddy and the Rough Riders, the Riptides, Kathy Lynn and the Playboys, Alan Pierce and the Tone Kings and Jay Bee and the Kats take a back seat to no one. Remarkably, these 20 tracks, chock-full of growling fretboard mojo, form a cohesive statement through the very attribute they all share: they just can't be pigeon-holed.

NEW REISSUE CLASSICS ON THE VOICEPRINT [VPT] GROUP OF LABELS... AND RESTOCKS OF SELDOM SEEN OLDER TITLES...
PATRICK MORAZ/BILL BRUFORD - Music For Piano And Drums (Winterfold 01 VPT; UK) Following his first group, 'Bruford', Bill Bruford worked with another former member of Yes, Patrick Moraz. Whilst they were never in Yes at the same time both Bruford and Moraz's roots and influences lie in jazz and it was in the mid-eighties that the two musicians came together to record two albums of eclectic drum and keyboard based music. The first one, the all-acoustic 'Music For Piano And Drums' [only previously available on CD from Japan 15 years ago!], was well-received and included diverse material such as the Max Roach composition This Drum Also Waltzes [a Bruford solo piece] and self-written material like Living Space. All of the music recorded by Bill Bruford during the years 1978-1985 has a resonance that still rings loud and true today and is being discovered by a new and eager audience for whom the music and performances remain as fresh and as exciting as it was for those who discovered it the first time around.

DAEVID ALLEN/INVISIBLE OPERA COMPANY OF OZ - Bananamoon Studio Tapes (Bananamoon Obscura 10 VPT; UK) [ltd. edition of 1000 copies] During the eighties Daevid eventually found himself back in his native Australia. It was during this period that Daevid continued to make music and form various musical alliances. One of the bands Daevid formed was The Invisible Opera Company Of Oz. The band recorded albums worth of songs to act as a demo for agents back in the UK where there was a big interest in Daevid and his musical ventures. Daevid had been exiled from the UK for ten years and the subsequent tour would see the triumphant return to UK venues of the man who was hard categorize. The recordings were made during a full moon and the resultant tapes were also mixed during a full moon also for good measure.
These tapes recorded on the eve of Daevid's return to the UK following his self imposed ten year exile are now to be made available as part of the ongoing Bananamoon Obscura series of recordings all of which have been chosen by Daevid and re mastered for release. The albums are also extremely collectable being as they are limited to just one thousand copies each. ANTHONY MOORE - Reed Whistle And Sticks (Blueprint 281 VPT; UK) Recorded in 1972, "Reed, Whistle and Sticks", part of a trilogy, was designed to explore a further, obvious attitude of repetition, which is its function in relationship with memory. Less obvious perhaps is the idea of memories that are unconciously formed, memories that are not immediately perceived. I prepared a surface of different materials on the studio floor; wood, glass, cloth, metal and plastic. Next I took a handful of bamboo sticks numbering around fifty and each a differing thickness and length, say between eight and twelve centimetres. A pair of microphones were placed sterephonically just above and to each side of the surface of materials. Holding my hands out in front of me, I proceeded to let the sticks fall slowly through my fingers and onto the prepared surface below. I recorded a series of 'drops' each lasting roughly between twelve and twenty five seconds before the sticks came to rest. A selection of these "drops" were then looped so that the sound was continuous, the repetition disguised as a linear, changing flow of events, rather than a repeating cycle.

ANTHONY MOORE - Out (Voiceprint 165 VPT; UK) Twenty-plus years late, Out is the 'new' album from Canterbury scene maestro Anthony Moore. Recorded in 1977, Out proves to be a stunning showcase of musical textures, riffs and lyrical wonderment complete with guest appearances from Andy Summers' strumming his stuff in a pre - Police kind of way, Kevin Ayres doing what a Canterbury legend does best and a reunion with fellow Slapp Happy / Henry Cow guru Peter Blegvad. This is the album that Canterbury scene / Henry Cow fans have been waiting for. Out is finally OUT!!!

BONZO DOG BAND - Anthropology: The Beast Within (DJC 08 VPT; UK) The ultimate art school band, formed at Goldsmiths College in 1965. Their musical style was a mixture of highbrow anarchy and lowbrow nostalgia. They appeared in The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour film and this led to a record contract and the release of their debut album Gorilla in 1967, which was dedicated to King Kong. They found a mass audience on the late 60's TV show Do Not Adjust Your Set, which also featured Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. In 1968, Paul McCartney under the guise of Apollo C Vermouth produced their number one hit single I'm The Urban Spaceman. The band split after their fourth album Keynsham, released in 1969 but reunited for contractual obligations to record Let's Make Up And Be Friendly in 1972, This only featured Stanshall, Legs Larry and Innes from the original band. This compilation documents the development of The Bonzo Dog Band from 1967/68 and is sourced from rehearsals, demos and outtakes of work in progress.
Line Up: Vivian Stanshall, Neil Innes, Roger Ruskin Spear, Legs Larry Smith, Dave Clague, Rodney Slater, Joel Druckman, Dennis Cowan, Sam Spoons, Vernon Dudley, Bohay-Nowell.

ROGER RUSKIN SPEAR [BONZO DOG BAND] - Electric Shocks/Rebel Trouser (DJC 05 VPT; UK) Anyone who's remotely fannish towards the Bonzos will no doubt either have, or will get their mitts on this album. Master Spear played in and amongst the Bonzos for a time, so it will come as no surprise to hear what's on offer here. It's basically the old style jazz with humour interlaced throughout. Electric Shocks, and Rebel Trouser (an ep) were released by United Artists, and now on DJC together. There's one or two 'guest' musicians that should be familiar to one or two of you: Chris Welch, BJ Cole, Dave Clague, and a certain T. Newmann, not sure if this is Tom Newmann, he of later Tubular Bells fame. The majority of the music is like early Bonzo, Jollity Farm type jazz/humour, and the puns and stabs abound on tracks like Mattress Man, Patrick Moore, two likeable covers of All By Yourself In The Moonlight and Living Doll. You also get Spear's version of Trouser Press, as well as Release Me and Captain Beefheart's Drop Out [Boogie]. A definite must for Bonzo fans!

KEITH CHRISTMAS - Brighter Day (Voiceprint 220 VPT; UK) Keith Christmas first came to prominence in the early seventies following the release of his debut album in late 1969. Keith Christmas recorded two further albums with help in the recording studio from the band Mighty Baby and toured in support of those albums with the likes of the Who, Ten Years After, King Crimson and Roxy Music. It was also during this period that Keith famously played on the David Bowie album Space Oddity and featured at the first Glastonbury festival in 1971. In early 1974 Keith temporarily abandoned his solo career for a short stint as vocalist with the Esperanto Rock Orchestra and singing on the album Danse Macabre. Following this album Keith returned to solo work and was signed to the Manticore label, which was the label, owned and managed by Emerson Lake and Palmer. This album was produced by Greg Lake and Pete Sinfield and also featured a stellar cast of supporting musicians including the likes of former King Crimson members Ian McDonald, Mel Collins and Ian Wallace and former members of the Grease Band Alan Spenner and Neil Hubbard. Two singles were released from this album and although sadly neither single made the singles chart although both are now quite collectable The American version of the album differed from it's British counterpart in that it featured the track My girl in place of the track Getting' Religion. This re issue is the first of the two albums Keith recorded for Manticore records in the seventies, has been re mastered for release and also includes a bonus track not found on the original issue.

THE ELECTRIC EELS - The Beast 999 Presents The Electric Eels in Their Organic Majesty's Request (Overground 71 VPT; UK) "The Electric Eels in Their Organic Majesty's Request collects both released and unreleased material from Cleveland pre-punkers The Electric Eels. This cult band whose declared fans include Thurston Moore and Jon Spencer only released a handful of singles during their short existence (1972-1974). Therefore this CD is the first comprehensive set documenting the band. Sound quality goes from average to poor, but it often fits the Eels garage rock energy. Nonsense lyrics, crude punk revolt and avant-gardist tendencies (singer Dave McManus, clarinet playing, some syncopated beats, an inclination to noise and free improvisation) point as much toward The Sex Pistols as well as early Pere Ubu, Sonic Youth and The Scissor Girls. Members of The Electric Eels would later join Pere Ubu, The Styrenes, The Dead Boys and The Cramps and elements of all of these bands sound can be found in these crude recordings." - Francois Couture The Electric Eels were probably every agent's and club owner's nightmare. They fought, they argued, but above all, they played really, really loud. Immense walls of sound usually caused many an owner to pull the plug, and this album, is, as far as I know, the only full length album of the Eels there is? The Eels were part of the Cleveland avante garage scene around the same time as Rocket From The Tombs, Pere Ubu and whilst the noise is very much in your face, the album does have a certain magnetism. The attitude and sheer honesty of freedom that early punk/new wave allowed is a living thing on this album. If you can get through the initial barrage of noise, you'll discover that 'thing' that is now sadly missing from the music scene - an undescribable entity that gave creativity a personality. Okay, so the Eels were bad boys (probably the original ones), and they relied perhaps on their image more than they should (maybe they genuinly didn't give a shit!), but the music on here shouldn't be overlooked. Inspired.

FLYING LIZARDS [DAVID CUNNINGHAM et al] - Secret Dub Life Of The Flying Lizards (Piano 501 VPT; UK) On this previously unreleased album, recorded at the same time as The Flying Lizards' 'Money', 1970s dub reggae meets ambience. Based on a Jamaican mono master tape David Cunningham invented (or perhaps re-invented) techniques of editing, looping, filtering and subtraction to deal with supposedly unremixable material (these were the days before samplers). These radical electronic treatments reverberate and echo back in time to the sounds of Black Ark and forward to current electronica.

GENERAL STRIKE [STEVE BERESFORD/DAVID TOOP] - Danger in Paradise (Piano 503 VPT; UK) General Strike was the name David Toop and Steve Beresford gave to their pop excursions with The Flying Lizards and Frank Chickens. This CD also features producer David Cunningham treating and echoing the already bizarre instrumental mix of rock, jazz, doowop and reggae, synthetically generated tone patterns and sounds as emotionally human as a baby's cry. Music from a particularly industrious afternoon concert in an elves' toyshop.

MICHAEL GILES/JAMIE MUIR/DAVID CUNNINGHAM - Ghost Dance [sndtck] (Piano 502 VPT; UK) King Crimson founding member Michael Giles and subsequent Crimson drummer/percussionist Jamie Muir combine with David Cunningham to create this exceptional soundtrack to Ken McMullen's 1983 film Ghost Dance. This music has many layers: tribal, ethnic, experimental, new age and metal -exploring the collision between ethnic cultures and western cities -the rich inner mythologies of the one and the alienation of the other and the philosophies that begin to explore this odd melee.

LES FLEUR DE LYS [GORDON HASKELL et al] - Reflections (Blueprint 256 VPT; UK) The one, and only reason why I was looking forward to getting this album, was purely and simply because of Gordon Haskell. This little release features 24 tracks of not just Fleur, but one or two other incarnations, such as John Bromley, Shyster, Waygood Ellis, Rupert's People, and Sharon Tandy. One th ing I will say, is that the music on here is sixties, and it's brilliant! Full retro, and slo-mo images of those sixties films flash by (remember they always had a party where some obscure band badly mimed). Joking apart, there are several numbers on here that really do shine, and the lead guitar work stands head and shoulders above a lot of what was going on around that time. Quite a few of the songs are very clever, and are more than just a sixties pop song, and, surprisingly, lack the pretentiousness of sixties 'seriously groovy' songs as well. My only conclusion with this album is that Fleur De Lys were terribly overlooked and should have been bigger than they were.

DANNY THOMPSON TRIO With JOHN McLAUGHLIN/TONY ROBERTSON - Live 1967 (Whatdisc 4 VPT; UK) "Danny Thompson truly is a legendary figure within the music industry. Danny has played with, amongst others: John Martyn, Tim Buckley, Richard Thompson, Pentangle and Everything But The Girl. The tapes of this set were recorded in 1967 at a long forgotten venue and were recently discovered in Danny's attic. John Mclaughlin is Britain's most renowned jazz guitarist. John has played with Georgie Fame, Jack Bruce, John Surman, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Charlie Haden and formed The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Miles Davis chose him to play on the ground breaking albums, In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and Jack Johnson. The trio is completed by Tony Robertson tenor saxophone, flute and bass clarinet. The set features a fine selection of jazz standards. There are fine solos from Roberts and Mclaughlin and some muscular playing from Danny. John Coltrane's haunting fragile ballad 'Naima' receives a magic reading with a heartbreaking short solo from John. This very rare recording offers a chance to hear a short lived world class trio with their interpretation of some jazz classics."

THE SKY GOES ALL THE WAY HOME [V.A.] - Downs Syndrome Fundraising Compilation [2 CD set] (Skygoes 01 VPT; UK) This project was co-ordinated by Ashley Franklin of BBC Radio Derby's Soundscapes (Mojo and The Wire both highlight his show). His 15 year old daughter Claire, has Downs Syndrome and she attends Parkwood School, Alfreton in Derbyshire. Whilst the family were on hoilday, Claire, whilst gazing out of a car window said "the sky goes all the way home..." Because of her condition, Claire's sentences are few and far between. This extraordinarily poetic phrase inspired Ashley to contact hundreds of musicians in order to compile an album. All profits from this release will go to Parkwood School (to raise funds for their minibus) and The Downs Syndrome Association, whose director has written some of the sleeve notes. Ashley has compiled a 35 track double cd, which will retail for the price of a normal compact disc. There are 35 tracks, 25 TRACKS OF WHICH ARE EXCLUSIVE TO THIS RELEASE and the running time is over 2 and a half hours. There is a sensible balance between local musicians and names of international repute - unrelesaed materials are from Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill, Anthony Phillips, No-Man, Roy Harper, Biosphere, Gordon Giltrap, John Wetton, Kevin Coyne, Nick Harper, In The Nursery, Rick Wakeman, Celtus, and many more.

He is a rare and real avant-garde improviser in the world, of course in Japan. These CDs in ten volumes contains the precious live recording of his last one year's activity. The peak of his art is at "Nashikuzushi No Shi", his solo work recorded in 1975. It has a motif of Celine's novel with the same title. In this work, the tones of alto-sax played by Abe and a phrase spun infinitely have the freshness, beauty, and creativity that compared with A. Ayler and impress the listeners deeply.

Heard here in an intimate trio setting, Bruce is more than ably accompanied by one of the most creative and driving rhythm sections, bassist Greg Cohen and drum master Joey Baron (10 year veterans of John Zorn's Masada). From conceptual improvisations to lovely ballads and straight-ahead swingers, this exciting CD showcases one of the great jazz soloists on the soprano saxophone. Even McVouty would say Zooty.

[V.A. Tribute To DAVE BRUBECK] IN HIS OWN SWEET WAY - In His Own Sweet Way (Avant 005; Japan) with Dave Slusser, Uri Caine, Pachora, Bill Frisell, Ruins, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Anthony Coleman, Eyvind Kang, Slowpoke, Erik Friedlander, Sex Mob, Dave Douglas, Joey Baron, David Krakauer. "Dave Brubeck is an enigma. Vilified by the underground intelligentsia for his stiff rhythmic feel and high record sales, Brubeck was a daring and distinctive composer whose experiments in expanding the language of jazz never got in the way of his natural melodic sense. Cross cultural influences, exotic scales and rhythms, experiments with odd time signatures, polytonality and unusual bar lengths are common place today in the music of cutting edge young jazzers like Steve Coleman, Dave Douglas and the like, but in the 1950s they raised more than a few eyebrows. Brubeck was the first. This is a tribute to a misunderstood experimentalist who introduced these elements into jazz over forty years ago in his own sweet way.

MISHA MENGELBERG TRIO - No Idea (DIW 619; Japan) Misha Mengelberg (p), Greg Cohen (b), Joey Baron (ds).
Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on June 27, 1996. With intelligence and humor, Dutch pianist/composer Misha Mengelberg has combined the spontaneity of free-form playing with the jazz traditions of Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols. He's recorded with Steve Lacy and other giants of the new music, and has taken his place alongside these giants as an intriguing soloist and composer. No Idea pairs Mengelberg with Masada's brilliant rhythm section, Greg Cohen and Joey Baron, and the trio offers original takes on classic tunes by Cole Porter (Begin The Beguine), George Gershwin (Someone To Watch Over Me), Kurt Weill (September Song), Duke Ellington (The Mooche) and more, including the wonderful House Party Starting by Herbie Nichols and Mengelberg's own title tune.

IKUE MORI With MARC RIBOT & ROBERT QUINE - Painted Desert (Avant 030; Japan) Following her legendary drumming with No Wave pioneers DNA, Ikue Mori has devoted herself to creative adaption of electronic drum machines. Painted Desert, originally released in 1995, is her most finely-focused album, investigating the textures and spirit of Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western soundtracks with guitar twang virtuosos Robert Quine (Lou Reed, Richard Hell & The Voidoids) and Marc Ribot (Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull). From desolate soundscapes to urgent and explosive tribal drumming, Mori's rhythms match the subtle colors and shading of her cohorts' twin-guitar interplay.

DAVID MURRAY With DAVE BURRELL/FRED HOPKINS/RALPH PETERSON Jr - Deep River (DIW 830; Japan) David Murray (ts, bcl), Dave Burrell (p), Fred Hopkins (b), Ralph Peterson Jr. (ds). Recorded at A&R Recording, NYC in January, 1988. The recording of this album was done by the same members at the same day of the recording of "Lovers" (DIW-814). "Lovers" is a graceful ballad album, but in this album, manipulating brilliant big tone, he is blowing and blowing. It is no exaggeration to say that this album showed one perfected formality of hard driving jazz.

Recorded at A&R Recording, New York in January, 1988. In his amazing masterpiece "Lovers", David Murray, who is famous for his radical play rooting in 70s loft jazz, played ballads over the whole work. This work is a sequel to "Lovers". Including the heartrending songs composed by him and his sworn friend Dave Burrell (p) who is both an active player in the free jazz scene and a great melody maker, and the pungent solo tune by the freak tone of his forte. This marvelous work is not only emotional but also the one that never tends to be a superficial sentimentalism, and so, even hard-liners will recognize this work very much!

DAVID MURRAY QUARTET With DON PULLEN/ANDREW CYRILLE/STANLEY FRANKS - Shakill's Warrior (DIW 850; Japan) David Murray (ts), Don Pullen (org), Stanley Franks (g), Andrew Cyrille (ds). Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on March 1 & 2, 1991. It attracted considerable attention that the late Don Pullen held fast to organ. In 1991, the year that this work was released, organist attracted little attention and a new style of the organ play is long awaited. It was so creative to desert a slovenly old-fashioned style and grope for modern organ Jazz, and this album was just as such. The essence Murray added to it is extremely special and is the result worthy of mention in their long career.

A moving tribute to the late clarinetist and educator, John Carter; a suite composed by Bobby Bradford, one of Carter's frequent collaborators and a close friend. Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on September 1, 2, 9 & 11, 1992 Another side of the amazing David Murray; sharp, intelligent and soulful writing for one of his famous eight-piece bands; The David Murray Octet. The centerpiece of the recording is a 37-minute suite that David wrote in 1992 for a commission from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society and Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Jazz Network. The piece was inspired by Picasso exhibit and the famous solo saxophone improvisation Coleman Hawkins recorded for Norman Grantz's label in 1948. It's a brilliant, multifaceted work that highlights David's magnificent writing and the improvisational skills of this great octet. Listen for the swirling trumpet work of Hugh Ragin; the timeless playing of former Blue Note alto man James Spaulding; the supportive piano and individual soloing of Dave Burrell; and, above all, the complete musicianship of David Murray.

The tunes are by these two giants and the passion throughout is honest and all encompassing.

Butch Morris unusual and innovative conduction techniques bring out truly inspired work from this all-star ensemble. Compositions from several of the band members, along with Murray's famous Flowers For Albert, and a joyously raucous and rhythmic version of Sonny Rollins' St.Thomas. NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Heretic (Avant 001; Japan) Heretic is the mysterious album of soundtrack music Zorn created for a Japanese film of S/M erotica and features this legendary band improvising in small units of duets and trios. Moody, extreme - almost exilerating, many die hard fans consider Heretic their favorite Naked City album. Includes the first of many collaborative duet recordings by Yamataka Eye / John Zorn and Joey Baron / Bill Frisell. John Zorn (as), Bill Frisell (g), Wayne Horvitz (key), Fred Frith (b), Joey Baron (ds), Yamataka Eye (vo)

NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Grand Guignol (Avant 002; Japan) This is the controversial CD that sparked Zorn's break with Nonesuch Records. Planned as the second Naked City album, the release was delayed for years over both musical and artistic issues. Exploring the darker side of human creativity, Grand Guignol is divided into three parts. The title track is a long paean to the theatre of shock and horror that took Paris by storm at the turn of the century. Stark and intense, Grand Guignol is one of Zorn's major long form compositions. Also included are Zorn's sensual arrangements of classical music by Messiaen, Scriabin, Ives and Debussy. The final third of the CD contains 33 of the seminal hardcore miniatures that made Naked City famous. Uncompromising cover art and music from one of the most original and eclectic bands of the 1990's. Naked City: John Zorn (as, vo), Bill Frisell (g), Wayne Horvitz (key), Fred Frith (b), Joey Baron (ds), Yamataka Eye (vo), Special Guest Vocalist: Bob Dorough

NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Radio (Avant 003; Japan) In its brief but influential 5-year life span, Naked City released 7 albums of astonishing breadth and originality. Originally released in 1993, Radio captures Naked City at the height of its powers, a band capable of anything from surf to nuts. R&B, country-rock, free jazz, hardcore punk, cartoon music, heavy metal, movie soundtracks and world-beat are all explored in John Zorn's radical compositional style, making this perhaps the best entry-way into Naked CitY's eclectic and intense world of sound. Originally conceived as a radio show for college radio, this delightful program of screams, funk beats, tender ballads and horrible noise is Naked City's party record. Fun for the whole family, dysfunctional or not. John Zorn (as, vo), Bill Frisell (g), Wayne Horvitz (key), Fred Frith (b), Joey Baron (ds), Yamataka Eye (vo)

NAKED CITY [JOHN ZORN'S] - Absinthe (Avant 004; Japan) Absinthe is one of John Zorn's most mysterious and elusive creations -- a strange twisted take on the legacies of Messiaen and ambient music. Joey Baron plays bags of dry leaves, fishing reels and buckshot, Bill Frisell solos on a microtonal guitar, Wayne Horvitz samples everything from crickets to Giacinto Scelsi, Fred Frith does what he does best, and Zorn doesn't even touch the saxophone. Exquisite analog recording at Electric Ladyland studio by Joe Ferla. Absinthe, originally released in 1993, is a dark and perplexing album that is considered by many to be Naked City's best work.

NEW YORK ART QUARTET - 35TH Reunion (DIW 936; Japan) Milford Graves (ds), Roswell Rudd (tb), John Tchicai (sax), Reggie Workman (b), Amiri Baraka (poetry reading on some cuts). The reunion of a legendary new music group. The NYAQ made their first records for the ESP label in 1964 and created an esthetic that in some sense created free jazz. With only the bassist different, this extraordinary collective is back making sounds that are guaranteed to take you to wild and different places. The players are remarkable; Rudd, who started in dixieland and has been in the vanguard of new music for the trombone while never losing his street smarts; Tchicai, from Denmark, who has a smart identifiable sound that was part of the dense weave of the original; Graves, possibly the most innovative drummer of the late 20th century; and bassist Workman, who played with Coltrane and offers power, grace and intelligence. The group is also joined by poet Amiri Baraka (aka Leroi Jones), last seen in Warren Beatty'fs film Bulworth.

Ostertag applies his sampling genius to a dance / techno / industrial / r & b / etc. It's a hilarious, surreal and subversive romp, a trashy gender-bending disco cartoon, featuring instrumental guests (Fred Frith, Chris Brown, Trevor Dunn and others) and a menagerie of guest vocalists (including Mike Patton, Lynn Breedlove, drag performance diva Justin Bond, and Christian Huygen.) Bob Ostertag (sampling, syn, etc), Joey Blake (back vo), Justin Bond (vo), Lynn Breedlove (vo), Chris Brown (sampler), Trevor Dunn (b), Fred Frith (g, b), Jim Hedges (g), Philip Horvitz (vo), Christian Huygen (vo), Andrea Lewis (back vo), Raz Kennedy (vo), Sara Miles, Mike Patton (vo), JD Reilly (key, p), Annie Toone (harmonica), Richie Waits, William Winant (el-per).

You have never heard anything quite like Plexure, and you are likely never to forget it. His sound installations, mystery tapes, dance performances, orchestral compositions and saxophone manipulations are known worldwide.

WILLIE OTERI With MIKE KENEALLY/TONY LEVIN/PAT MASTELOTTO/EPHRAIM OWENS/RONAN CHRIS MURPHY - Spiral Out (DIW 466; Japan) Produced by R C Murphy. Tired of buying sideman projects of players in groups you like[d]? Well, I am! Just when I thought I'd never buy another non-Crimson album to hear Tony Levin, along comes this inspired release from this Austin, Texas (by way of Japan!) guitar wonderkind Willie Oteri, whose styles range from superfast runs (a la Keneally) to Hendrixian blues to Frippian washes. The basic quartet tracks of Oteri, keyboardist Murphy (who has produced Takeharu Hayakawa [Ruins] among others and engineered/mixed many of the live Crimson releases for the Collector's Club), and King Crimson rhythm section Levin and Mastelotto were laid down in 2001 with Mike Keneally's organ and Fender Rhodes and Ephraim Owens' trumpet overdubbed in early 2002.
A really heady mix of sounds and styles - some tracks reminiscent of 70's Miles/Tony Williams Lifetime, while others, especially "Sundial/Spiral Out" and "First Light" are 1st rate Crimsonesque (makes you wonder what Crimso would be like if Oteri took over Belew's guitar chair - possibly re-invigorated!) All are playing great here - Four Thumbs UP! -mannylunch

'BIG' JOHN PATTON With JOHN ZORN - Minor Swing (DIW 896; Japan) John Patton (org), John Zorn (as), Ed Cherry (g), Kenny Wollesen (ds). Produced by John Zorn & Kazunori Sugiyama.John Zorn has always been a fan of the funky tenor and organ music that was so much a part of the Blue Note label in the 1960's and 1970's. One of the most dynamic of the organists from those records was the so soulful John Patton; or Big John Patton as he was known then. Patton is still groovin' after all these years as this killer session with Zorn proves. He's more than just a funkmeister, though. Says Harvey Pekar, "You hear something familiar in his work and think you can predict where it's going, but it turns out you're not always right / he makes every note count." This is a very special and inspired album indee! Zorn's full range of alto sax sounds and techniques show how much he loves Patton's - listen to his phenomenal solo on "The Way I Feel" which Zorn also covered with Naked City on 'Live Vol 1: Knitting Factory 1989' on the Tzadik label. All of the tunes are Patton's except the great Tyrone, written by the late organist Larry Young.

He has worked with everyone from Elvis Costello, Chuck Berry and Jack McDuff to Lou Reed, Tom Waits and John Lurie. He can play more styles of music than most people can think of, and with Shrek he has invented yet another. Shrek is Marc's ultimate compositional statement to date : an atavistic exploration of the primitive, the banal and the despised. Featuring an incredible band of Chris Wood (Medeski, Martin & Wood), Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing), Christine Bard and Jim Pugliese (ESP), Marc Anthony Thompson (on auto-erotic harp!) and the ubiquitous David Shea on samplers, Shrek will make you scream. Also included is a cartoon piece for two keyboards and a trio for samplers that ultimately points toward the direction he was to follow over the next several years. MASAYUKI TAKAYANAGI/KAORU ABE - Mass Projection (DIW 424; Japan) Masayuki Takayanagi (g), Kaoru Abe (as, shakuhachi with reed). July 9, 1970, that is to say, 11 days after of the recording of "Kaitaiteki Koukan", Takayanagi and Abe met again by chance in the stage of "Station '70" and developed a tremendous play that became legendary in enthusiast. It is the noteworthy point in these releases that play style of "Gradually Projection" (DIW-425), which developed in about 50 minutes as second set of the day, is independently released. It is no exaggeration to say that the work is key to solve the mysterious term of Takayanagi. On the other hand, in "Mass Projection", which recorded the first set and third set, punkish, noisy, and tremendous play that changes atmosphere at the first one sound is developed. I want this legendary play to be listened by not only jazz fun but also new rock fun of alternative, noise, grunge, and so on.

Originally released in 1980 on the small British independent label, this record has retained its bite, relevance and raw power for nearly twenty years now.Because you can talk about acid jazz, punk-funk, riddim 'n' grunge, black rock or harm lectric boogie - but RU Glad? demands to know what those stylisms coyly hint at, slashing through hype and hypocrisy to lay bare the question facing all so-called citizens of the free world: what to make of the benefits and detriments of the late 20th century culture. How do you like it here? And could you bear anything else?" - Howard Mandel

It has an intensity rarely matched in current recording because, among other reasons, David S.Ware Quartet is an actual working band! Pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist William Parker are also beginning to gain attention with several albums to their credits. And, Suzie Ibarra is the drum star of the future. Ware's last album received a 4-star review in Rolling Stone and he has recently been signed to Sony by Branford Marsalis.

DAVID S. WARE - Third Ear Recitation (DIW 870; Japan) David S. Ware (ts), Matthew Shipp (p), William Parker (b), Whit Dickey (ds). Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on October 14 & 15, 1992. David S.Ware is one of the most celebrated of the new saxophonists. He has just released a new album for SONY, has been the subject of feature stories in jazz publications and is actively being worked with national daily and monthly press. This 1992 album was David's second for DIW and is an extraordinary display of David's wild and wooly ways - a rousing and exciting trip on the saxophone with his own exploratory tunes plus some far out takes on the standards Autumn Leaves (he plays this one twice!) and Angel Eyes. His standout quartet includes pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist William Parker, who have since become major names in their own right. Ben Ratliff of the New York Times has said of this album, This music sounds like a felicitous meeting of lifelong preparation and flashed spontaneity.

DAVID WEINSTEIN - Perfume (Avant 020; Japan) David Weinstein is a composer who uses electronic and recording technology to fashion improbable orchestral and musical juxtapositions. Utilizing rigorous compositional techniques and hackneyed Hollywood tricks as well as experimental processes, Weinstein composes with an appreciation of the divine in the pedestrian. As a composer/keyboardist Weinstein has recorded and performed in collaboration with the singer/composer Shelley Hirsch, in Elliott Sharp's Carbon, with John Zorn, and a variety of other composer/musicians from Arto Lindsay to Zeena Parkins. Five years in the making, Weinstein's first solo CD Perfume charts a dyslexic and exotic path through microtonal scales towards the world of just intonation.

BERNARD WOMA - Live At The Pito Bar (Avant 063; Japan) Bernard Woma, a member of the Dagara tribe from northern Ghana, is considered one of the foremost balafon players in the world. On Sunday afternoons, Bernard and his friends go to Nandem House to kick back, relax, drink Pito (a homemade beer brewed from millet), dance and play some music. This CD documents one such afternoon, and the result is one of the most exciting, raw, visceral recordings of African music you've ever heard. The intense energy and poly-rhythmic complexity of this music can remind you of the Cecil Taylor trio at one moment, and Steve Reich the next. But of course, you've never heard anything like it before. Absolutely Riveting.

Here, however, he delves more deeply into tradition, presenting an acoustic quintet (himself playing only guitar) and covering Eric Dolphy and Wayne Shorter tunes.
