ÉAND FOR THOSE LOOKING TO BUY A GREAT LTD COLLECTORÕS ITEM AT A MORE REASONABLE...
ZEENA PARKINS - $Shot (self-produced; USA) {CD comes in one of 3 packages: a designer airport pillow; a 12" square felt sheet with hidden red-lined pockets for inserts and CD (hmmmmm...); or a ceramic plate-like object - each has different printed material but the same CD}
'$Shot' is a dance piece and installation, choreographed by Jennifer Lacey, (pillows) designed by Nadia Lauro, danced by Erin Cornell with the music composed and performed by the harpist supreme Zeena Parkins. Zeena had been on tour with pop-star Bjork for over a year and finally came down to DMG to provide us with a few of these highly limited edition CD&pillow or CD&feltsquare to sell. The packaging for the '$Shot' comes in three different designs, but I am just going to describe the one I have at hand. Can't say I've ever seen a cd/art object like this before!?! This is one of those blow-up rubber airport pillows that fits all of the way around one's neck, it is soft black with round pictures of the dance performance painted in shades of gray.
THE CD: Zeena plays tone generator, ring modulator, various synths, tambura and an odd variety of percussive objects, but no harp. '$Shot' deals more with carefully crafted textures and manipulated acoustic and electronics sounds. The rustling paper, plastic and other rubbed scraps with the calm suspense of subtle electronic blips, bleeps and whirs. A shimmering tambura drone with dreamy liquid samples is mesmerizing for a few moments. There is even a short drum n' bass detour which fits perfectly as well. Everything here flows most naturally and organically, nothing is too weird or alien sounding, yet this is still engaging and quite fascinating throughout. These unique CD/pillows or CD/FeltSquares [she will be bringing us the CD/Ceramic edition in the future but we don't stock it yet] come in a limited edition of about 100, all signed by Zeena. You may specify which package, as long as supplies of each last, of course.
Ltd Ed CD/Art Package $65
WE CURRENTLY HAVE THE INFLATABLE PILLOWS AND THE 12Ó FELT SQUARE EDITIONS IN STOCK; Requests for the Ceramic Plate edition will have to wait for Zeena to bring them to us.
[as for that ÔjerkÕ who wants the hidden pockets on the inflatable edition, ItÕs a different kinda merchant you should be approaching...stop emailing us!]

HEREÕS A HISTORIC RECORDING WE HAVENÕT HAD IN STOCK FOR YEARS...THANKS TO MR. ESKELIN!!!
ELLERY ESKELIN - Premonition: Solo Tenor Saxophone (Prime Source 2010; USA) Along with Dave Douglas, Ellery Eskelin is the downtown New York player who gets plenty of respect from the neo-trad cats. This solo saxophone recording is a good indicator as to why that's true. Eskelin's notion of improvisation comes out of the '60s school of vanguard jazz, but his love of "the tune" comes straight from the late 1940s. His improvisation is possessed by an inherent lyricism he couldn't abandon if he tried. These six selections are more than saxophone exercises, or improvisations; they are mediations on tonal lyricism and space within the framework of what constitutes jazz improvisation. And while there are three gorgeously innovative reworkings of canonical jazz tunes -- "Besame Mucho," "Off Minor," and "Body and Soul," all three of which close out the album -- it's the first three pieces, the originals, that offer the real evidence of Eskelin's depth. The paced legato in "Solo #1: Phantasmagoria," the elliptical sonant scalar glide on "Solo #2: Song Cycle," and the microtonal exploration of major thirds in "Solo #3: Premonition." This is a solo saxophone recording of a whole different color and esthetic, and it's truly wonderful. - Thom Jurek, AMG

ÉAND THANKS TO MR EMERY HIMSELF, WE CAN OFFER YOU THESE TWO OUT-OF-PRINT CLASSICS ONCE AGAIN [for a little while] AT REGULAR PRICES!!!
JAMES EMERY SEPTET With MARTY EHRLICH/MARK FELDMAN/CHRIS SPEED/MICHAEL FORMANEK/GERRY HEMINGWAY/KEVIN NORTON - Spectral Domains (Enja; USA) This one features Emery on acoustic guitar only, w/ Marty Ehrlich & Chris Speed on reeds, Mark Feldman on violin, Michael Formanek on bass and Gerry Hemingway & Kevin Norton on drums & percussion! James Emery's 1999 album, Spectral Domains, features more of his state-of-the-art chamber jazz. Emery's skillful, poetic jazz guitar is augmented by violin, sax, vibes, percussion, bass and clarinet, for a sound that is intricately composed but allows for lyrical improvisations. Spectral Domains reaffirms Emery's reputation as a distinctive, eclectic performer [both in his own work and co-leader of the venerable String Trio of New York ] - Heather Phares, AMG
CD $15.
JAMES EMERY With MARTY EHRLICH/MICHAEL FORMANEK/GERRY HEMINGWAY- Standing On A Whale...Fishing For Minnows (Enja; USA) "Acoustic guitarist James Emery is a remarkable technician who possesses an identifiable sound and style, which is glowingly evident on this super fine release, Standing on a Whale Fishing for Minnows. Besides the somewhat paradoxical albeit amusing connotations of the album title, this recording stands as one of the top modern jazz-based releases of 1997, as Emery aligns himself with a superstar aggregation of talent, featuring drummer/percussionist Gerry Hemingway, woodwind specialist Marty Ehrlich, and bassist Michael Formanek. On pieces such as "New Water," the guitarist and Ehrlich, here performing on clarinet, interlace whimsical unison lines with bending themes atop craftily implemented rhythmic diversions, enhanced by Emery's lightning fast single note leads and altogether comprehensive knowledge of the jazz vernacular. The ten-minute multi-part opus, "Cobalt Blue," is brimming with hybrid classical/jazz overtures, augmented by Ehrlich's undulating lines and Emery's rhythmically executed chord progressions. Here, the leader directs the band through an amalgamation of enchanting peaks, valleys, and spiraling paths as the musicians produce a spirited feast for the aural senses, counterbalanced by quaint motifs and stunning improvisational dialogue. Highlights abound throughout, as the musicians also engage in slightly off kilter blues-based workouts, while Hemingway also utilizes and overlays marimbas and vibes where the band explores Caribbean themes in conjunction with the ensemble's acute sense of the dynamic. However, the beauty lies within the artist's prolific sonic landscapes and the ensemble's cunning ability to integrate disparate elements into a repertoire and presentation that sustains long term interest, as every track offers a novel glimpse of James Emery's exquisitely articulated visualizations. Highly recommended! - Glenn Astarita, AMG

TORONTOÕS NOJO [Neufeld Occhipinti Jazz Ochestra] BACK IN STOCK - AFTER A 6-MONTH ABSENCE!!!
NOJO With SAM RIVERS [PAUL NEUFELD/ MICHAEL OCCHIPINTI JAZZ ORCHESTRA] - City Of Neighborhoods (True North 323; Canada) A scaled down (10 piece) version of the Neufeld/Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra, the Toronto-based big band led by multi-keyboardist Paul Neufeld and guitarist Michael Occhipinti, is joined by octegenarian [he's only gotten fiercer with age!] wind-master Sam Rivers on soprano and tenor saxes and flute. This strong ten-piece band includes six horns, guitar, keys, bass and drums. The writing and playing here is especially sharp, focused and inspired. The mighty Sam Rivers gets to solo on each piece and what is great is to hear Sam in a completely different context other than his usual smaller and freer projects. This is a great modern jazz/rock ensemble and it is also wonderful to hear Sam soloing and playing with an electric guitarist and electric keyboardist. Nojo have a wacky sense of humor at times and occasionally even get funky and take a few silly or even strange detours. ÒDuke A Go GoÓ is like one of those sixties spy show surf themes with a fine flute solo from Sam. ÒNeurotheologiansÓ has a great, difficult constantly changing rhythm scheme, but it is still fun and Occhipinti takes a swell, tasty wah-wah guitar solo. The ÒGlassblowerÓ starts with three haunting flutes swirling together, before Sam takes a lovely flute solo on his own, as well as superb solos for his soprano and tenor saxes. The layered contrapuntal horns on ÒThe Year in ReviewÕ are well balanced and well written, the band is tight and the solos are short yet inspired and spin righteously around one another.
CD $16
NOJO With DON BYRON & HUGH MARSH [PAUL NEUFELD/ MICHAEL OCCHIPINTI JAZZ ORCHESTRA] - Highwire (True North 273; Canada) Features 16 of Canada's best improvising (modern jazz/rock) musicians performing the original music of pianist Paul Neufeld and guitarist Michael Occhipinti, with guest musicians Don Byron on clarinet and bass clarinet on almost all cuts, and Hugh Marsh (from Bruce CockburnÕs band) violin on 3 cuts. Once again, this wonderful orchestra excels at adventurous writing and playing with some inspired help from our own Don Byron on clarinets and Hugh Marsh on violin. Even though this is a massive project, the music is often stripped down so that the enchanting melodies and rich harmonies can shine through. Again, each piece takes and explores a different direction, some sly funk, a reggae-like groove that sounds like it was made for a circus, a ÒBo DiddelyÓ like New Orleans groove with some fine clarinet from Mr. Byron. You never know where theyÕll end up and again its those rich harmonies, horn charts and occasional solos from the guitarist or keyboard wiz, that make this so special throughout.
CD $16
NOJO With DON BYRON [PAUL NEUFELD/ MICHAEL OCCHIPINTI JAZZ ORCHESTRA] - You Are Here (True North 166; Canada) NOJO stands for the Neufeld/Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra, which is a chance-taking, Toronto-based big band led by pianist Paul Neufeld and guitarist Michael Occhipinti. Released by Auracle in Canada in 1998 and reissued by True North, their current label, You Are Here is an excellent CD that underscores the orchestra's risk-taking nature. Neufeld and Occhipinti can hardly be accused of leading one of those faceless, conventional big bands that spends its time sounding like a poor man's version of the Buddy Rich Orchestra-NOJO strives for originality, and the quirky, left-of-center compositions of Neufeld and Occhipinti combine a love of Charles Mingus with influences that range from world music to funk and Mississippi Delta blues. During the course of this CD, one hears NOJO bringing elements of Arabic, Jewish and North African music to its post-bop foundation. On You Are Here, NOJO has a very special guest soloist in clarinetist Don Byron, who is featured prominently and proves to be a major asset. Byron is quite adventurous himself; so it isn't surprising that he fits in so perfectly on this 1998 session, which is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who likes to hear a big band taking chances. -- Alex Henderson, AMG

GUNTHER SCHULLERS ÔGM RECORDINGSÕ LABEL IS HOME TO STELLAR RECORDINGS OF OBVIOUS EXTREME INTEREST TO OUR ÔDOWNTOWN MUSICÕLISTENERS...
MOSAIC SEXTET [DAVE DOUGLAS/MARK FELDMAN/MICHAEL JEFRY STEVENS/JOE FONDA/MICHAEL RABINOWITZ/HARVEY SORGEN] - Today, This Moment [Expanded 2 CD edition] (GM 3045; USA) This newly re-mastered set includes the group's German release, Today, This Moment, and a second disc of never-before-released material. The Mosaic Sextet also features the earliest Dave Douglas and Michael Jefry Stevens compositions available on CD and the first collaboration (of many) between Douglas and violinist Mark Feldman.
"The Mosaic Sextet was an important band for me. For one thing, it allowed me to make my first forwards into extended composition. The instrumentation, with the violin and bassoon which are not traditionally jazz instruments helped me break the three horns/three rhythm section formula of most jazz writing. The group freed me up ... there was a spirit of trying to do something new and original." Dave Douglas
"Dave Douglas is a composer in the great creative tradition of Ellington and Mingus, and the Mosaic Sextet is one of the finest combinations of composition and improvisation I have heard in the last ten years." Gunther Schuller

JAMIE BAUM With DAVE DOUGLAS/DREW GRESS et al - Sight Unheard (GM 3031; USA) Jamie Baum's second CD as a leader, with masterfully assembled personnel Dave Douglas, Kenny Werner, Jeff Hirschfield, Roberta Piket and Drew Gress. Introduce these volcanic performers to such an activating agent as Baum's music and an eruption is inevitable. The resulting sonic avalanche settles into a beautiful new jazz landscape. Baum has impressed musicians and critics alike with her inventive and imaginative compositions and atypical approach to the flute as a lead instrument. Having lived in New York for ten years, she has worked as a leader or sideperson with Randy Brecker, Paul Motian, John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick, George Russell, Kenny Werner, Fred Hersch, Kenny Barron, Dave Douglas, Mike Formanek, Billy Hart and others in a wide range of styles from jazz to classical to new music.

MARK HELIAS With ELLERY ESKELIN/MARK FELDMAN/TOM RAINEY/MARK SARIN - Fictionary (GM 3037; USA) This premiere US release (and GM debut) has captured the electricity of Mark Helias's live performance prowess at two different Dutch music festivals in 1995 (the Groningen Jazz Festival) and 1996 (Nijmegen Music Meeting). Helias is joined by NYC downtown's Mark Feldman (violin), Ellery Eskelin (tenor) and drummers Tom Rainey or Mike Sarin in a setting of compositions that exude balance and form, rhythmic interaction, odd metrical sub-divisions and open form improvisation. A veteran of many groups including those led by such masters as Anthony Davis, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Ray Anderson and Anthony Braxton, Helias's present quintet has been praised by Pulse! magazine for its ability to slide across musical planes with the kind of witty, graceful inevitability that bespeaks well-honed craft and an ever more recognizable voice.

GERRY HEMINGWAY QUINTET With MICHAEL MOORE/ERNST REIJSEGER/WOLTER WIERBOS/MARK DRESSER - Waltzes, Two-Steps & Other Matters of the Heart (GM 3043; USA) The beauty of waltz forms and European folk traditions, combined with the excitement of great improvision, marks this recording as the culmination of twelve years of Gerry Hemingway performing with his Quintet. Hemingway was a member of the pathbreaking Anthony Braxton Quartet from 1983-95. He work also includes recordings/performances with Fred Hersch, Kenny Wheeler, John Cale, Ray Anderson, Reggie Workman, and Don Byron. Ran Blake, piano; Ed Schuller, bass; George Schuller, drums. Guest artist on three tracks: Nicole KAmpgen, alto saxophone. Michael Moore, alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet; Wolter Wierbos, trombone; Ernst Reijseger, cello; Mark Dresser, bass; Gerry Hemingway, drums, percussion, harmonica

FRED HERSCH/MICHAEL MOORE/GERRY HEMINGWAY - Thirteen Ways (GM 3033; USA) After almost 20 years of universal acclaim as a musician's musician, pianist/composer Fred Hersch is now gaining wide recognition as a major artists with an unmistakably singular identity. An old college and New York City buddy of Hersch's, the amazing clarinetist Michael Moore, migrated to Amsterdam in the early '80s. Moving to Holland meant forsaking fame in the USA, but Moore flourished, developing a style that has garnered him praise as the best clarinetist in jazz today. In 1986, he became only the second non-Dutch musician to win the top national jazz award, the Boy Edgar Prize. Percussionist Gerry Hemingway is Hersch's opposite: he's worked with Don Byron, Derek Bailey, John Cale, Anthony Braxton, Anthony Davis and others. Suffice it to say that in this case, opposites attract. Hear the incredible Hersch/Hemingway duet Star Eyes, especially its quietly dramatic entrance. Hersch convened this trio for two days of recording and a standing-room-only gig at New York's Knitting Factory's July '95 festival. According to Hersch, "The nice thing about playing with Michael and Gerry is there are no limits. The trio deftly balances chamber music delicacy with casual but intense swing." Thirteen Ways is the trio's magnum opus. It's made up of loose improvisations on each of thirteen poems by Wallace Stevens. Think of Wallace Stevens as a spiritual kin...XX A high degree of order, yet a fascination with chaos...X

HUMAN FEEL [CHRIS SPEED/JIM BLACK/KURT ROSENWINKEL/ANDREW D'ANGELO/JOE FITZGERALD] - Scatter (GM 3024; USA) Prompting the proclamation in Pulse! magazine "In a jazz world dominated by Stepford-like traditionalists, this band's a breath of fresh air, comes Scatter by the Boston-New York based Human Feel, a group that has been together over a decade. Starting in their teens as fellow band members in Seattle, the band moved to the east coast in 1987, releasing a self-produced CD that in 1989 landed the Cash Box Jazz Chart Top 30, among other awards and accolades. The roots of Scatter lie in the great legacy of jazz and in its diversity reflecting the many varied experience of the ensemble members, while at the same time creating a sense of unity. Oneness is achieved out of the band's desire to play music that honestly conveys the thoughts, feelings and emotions they experience in life. The title Scatter refers to these concepts of diversity and unity, which are combined to create a music that is purely Human Feel.

MILTON BABBITT/ARNOLD SCHOENBERG/IGOR STRAVINSKY//GUNTHER SCHULLER cond. - Transfigured Notes/Transfigured Night/Concerto In D For String Orchestra (GM 2044; USA) Milton Babbitt's Transfigured Notes for string orchestra had a "sensational" career before it was ever actually performed, having been declared "unplayable" twice by a major American orchestra. That it is eminently playable is demonstrated by this first recording, made live at Gunther Schuller's world premiere performance. Transfigured Notes is embraced on this CD by seminal works by Babbitt's two favorite composers: Schoenberg's early masterpiece Transfigured Night and Stravinsky's Concerto in D for String Orchestra. Performed by a string orchestra handpicked from among Boston's finest musicians and recorded live at Jordan Hall, Boston, February 1991.

BILL DeARANGO With JOE LOVANO/ED SCHULLER/GEORGE SCHULLER - Anything Went (GM 3041; USA) How many jazz musicians can you think of who performed and recorded with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Red Norvo, Ben Webster and Sarah Vaughan in the 1940s and are still playing modern jazz? Born in 1921, Bill DeArango started his musical career playing with local Dixielanders as a child, moved on to play with the preeminent beboppers and now joins forces with today's tenor saxophone master Joe Lovano. Along the way, DeArango has won respect and admiration for his technical and harmonic mastery, as well as his aggressive and precise soloing, displayed in recent years with Lovano, Kenny Werner, Jamey Haddad and Paul Motian. After leaving the army in 1944, Bill settled in New York City, where he was active on the national scene until 1947. He then returned to Cleveland, his home town, where he has studied composition, taught and played for the past 49+ years. Thanks to producer Gunther Schuller, DeArango is presented here as a bandleader for the first time since 1954. According to Harvey Pekar, Bill DeArango has had a singular career and is easily one of the greatest of all jazz guitarists, an opinion that any critic or musician who hears him will share.

MARK WHITECAGE With DOMINIC DUVAL/JAY ROSEN - Split Personality (GM 3038; USA) Long considered a musician's musician, Mark Whitecage has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian, Jeanne Lee and Dave Douglas, in a career spanning four decades. His music reflects an approach to jazz composition and improvisation popular in the vibrant New York loft scene of the late 60s and early 70s, in which relatively simple written frameworks allow for extended improvisation. This collaborative approach encourages maximum participation in the creation of the music with the minimum imposition of the composer's will. On this GM release the trio explores the outer limits within a more structured tune-based format. They share a keen sense of dramatic flare, a collective feel for tension and release in performance, and the common goal of creating musical experiences that are rich in contrasting ensemble densities, dynamics, tempi and tone colors.

ED SCHULLER With JOE LOVANO/BILLY HART et al - To Know Where One Is (GM 3019; USA) Two master musicians, friends of twenty years, and musical companions are back together on To Know Where One Is. Bassist Ed Schuller and tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano ensure a brilliant recording, as they've proven in previous outings. But To Know Where One Is also has trombonist Gary Valente, drummer Billy Hart, and guitarist Bill Bickford (from Schuller's highly praised Eleventh Hour Band) on hand as well. Schuller has works with Lovano's band Symbiosis and accompanies Lovano on the Blue Note Records release Rush Hour. Bassist/composer Ed Schuller, son of composer/conductor Gunther Schuller, is found of The Eleventh Hour. The music is comprised of Schuller's compositions, drawn from many styles and influences. Schuller has performed previously with (among others) Pat Martino, Dewey Redman, Bill Frisell, Lee Konitz, Mal Waldron, Julius Hemphill, John Lewis, Jaki Byard, the Paul Motian Quintet, the Tim Berne Quintet, Clark Terry, and Red Rodney, making appearances worldwide from Carnegie Hall to the Philharmonie in Berlin to numerous jazz festivals.

GEORGE SCHULLER With JOE LOVANO/MATT DARRIAU et al - LookinÕ Up from Down Below (GM 3013; USA) Latest in a long line of musical Schullers, George is one of Boston's (and New York's!) favorite jazz drummers and composers, as well as being the driving force behind the popular little big band Orange Then Blue. For his first recording as leader, George has assembled some of the top players from New England's extensive jazz scene and set them loose on a collection of his own tunes. A stunning, visionary debut from a mature and gifted musician. (See also George's recordings as leader of Orange Then Blue.) "A quality release, with just enough challening 'out' playing to interest the die-hard avant-guardist and enough mainstream appeal to be accessible to the rest of the listening public."Cadence Tiger Okoshi, trumpet; Gary Valente, trombone; Matt Darriau, soprano saxophone; Joe Lovano, George Garzone, tenor saxophone; Ben Sher, Bruce Arnold, guitar; John Lockwood, Ed Schuller, bass; George Schuller, drums

GUNTHER SCHULLER - Orchestral Works (GM 2059; USA) This recording spans 50 years of Schuller's compositional work from 1946 (when he was known only as a horn player) to the present as a Pulitzer prize-winning composer/conductor. Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee, Schuller's most popular work and one of the few post-war compositions to become standard orchestral repertory, is here recorded for the first time in nearly forty years and for the first time conducted by the composer himself. An Arc Ascending, inspired by photographs of environmental artist Alice Weston, sonically reflects upon the different seasonal aspects brought about by the path of the sun in its seemingly ascending arc. Three seasons are represented (summer, winter and spring) with as many ascending musical arcs, using a palette of register, orchestral color and rhythmic intensity, culminating in a climactic clash of brightly iridescent harmonies.

JAMES BROWN - Soul On Top (Verve 61718; UK) Godfather of Soul makes like Nat King Cole! "As Brown said to Leonard Feather, writer of this long-out-of-print 1969 album's original liner notes: "At heart, I've always been a jazz man." You have to hear James tearing it up backed by the Louis Bellson Orch. and arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Five unedited tracks are included, four of which are previously unissued, and the final song, "There Was A Time" co-written by James Brown and Bud Hobgood, has never been issued before at all. Through it all Brown shows that he's an unparalleled master of interpretation across all genres." - Rriis, Amazon

DAVE BURRELL - High Won - High Two (Black Lion; Germany) This CD reissues a trio set with bassist Sirone and either Bobby Kapp or Sonny Murray on drums. Most intriguing is a 19+ minute "West Side Story Medley" that features Burrell playing many of the songs from Leonard Bernstein's work in abstract fashion. There is also the lengthy "East Side Colors," five brief versions of five of Burrell's originals and the "Theme Stream Medley" which has reprises of the five songs plus a sixth piece ("Inside Ouch").

JOHN CALE - Paris 1919 (Reprise 25926; UK) One of John Cale's very finest solo efforts, Paris 1919 is also among his most accessible records, one which grows in depth and resonance with each successive listen. A consciously literary work -- the songs even bear titles like "Child's Christmas in Wales," "Macbeth" and "Graham Greene" -- Paris 1919 is close in spirit to a collection of short stories; the songs are richly poetic, enigmatic period pieces strongly evocative of their time and place.

RY COODER/JON HASSELL - Trespass [sndtck score] (Sire; USA) For those of you who own John Zorn's Filmworks II, did you ever wonder what film by Walter Hill that material ultimately was UN-used for? Well, after the studio rejected Zorn's recordings over Hill's protests, Ry Cooder was approached to compose and record the eerie and terrifying cues and background music that the director envisioned and required for this ultra-suspenseful film. Cooder teamed up with the legendarytrumpet experimentalist Jon Hassell and drum master Jim Keltner and produced a body of recordings that rival the intensity of Zorn's approach, albeit in a different vein but similarly dark and brooding. Yet there should be no comparison: both Zorn's and Cooder's differing visions are recordings par excellence...and this one is also a must for fans of Jon Hassell!!!

CREATIVE ARTS ENSEMBLE - One Step Out (Nimbus 913; USA) Featuring Kaeef Ruzadun on piano & compositions, Shaleethia B.J. Crowley on vocals, Wilbert "Jiggs" Helmsley on tenor sax, Gary Bias on alto & soprano saxes, Jeff Clayton on bari sax, Dadesi Komolafe on flute, George Bohannon on trombone, Al White on trumpet, Henry Franklin on bass and Sunship Theus on drums. Like another Nimbus artist, pianist Kaeef Ruzadun also encouraged and inspired by Horace Tapscott. And like the great pianist & bandleaders, Horace Tapscott and Sun Ra, Kaeef's great ten piece band embraces the history of jazz. The title piece is a powerful work which features the enchanting vocals of Shaleethia Crowley, the great McCoy-like piano of Kaeef and the tight, rambunctious playing of this superb little big band. The only players I am familiar with here are the rhythm team of Henry Franklin on bass and Woody "Sunship" Theus, who once played with in John McLaughlin's Electric Dreams band. The rhythm section play excitingly throughout and Kaeef's writing for the six horns is also a thing of great beauty and passion. Solos are kept relatively short, but no less engaging, especially George Bohannon's trombone, Jeff Clayton's bari sax and Jiggs Helmsley on tenor sax. Mr. Ruzadun's short snippets of lyrics and overall vibe is that of spiritual concerns and it all feels just right. In a blindfold test one might have pegged this for a long lost McCoy Tyner large group session from the early 70's, it is just as good!

SANDY DENNY - Gold Dust: Live At The Royalty (Island 252; UK) 1971 album from the first lady of British Folk/Folk Rock [ex Fairport Convention]! "This was the last date in a November '77 tour after a two-year absence as well as the final performance of Denny's career -- she died less than five months later. Unreleased for 21 years, the concert tapes required guitar and background vocal repairs to remove some sonic disturbances. With a steel guitarist among the band members, there's a gorgeous sweep to the arrangements on Gold Dust. And Denny's voice, fragile at some moments and powerful at others, is simply an awe-inspiring instrument. Drawing from British and American folk, pop, and more, Gold Dust has a regal and spiritual quality that makes it timeless."
CD $14.00 7 for 6 SALE.
SANDY DENNY - Sandy (Island 132; UK) Sandy Denny's quintessential solo effort, 'Sandy' is the follow up to the Island LP The North Star Grassman and the Ravens. Features covers of Bob Dylan and Richard Farina as well as 8 originals. "A beautiful blend of the traditional style with which she is most often associated and a slightly more lavish sound that would become more prevalent in her later work. Trevor Lucas does an excellent job of balancing the two and creating an exquisite backdrop for Sandy Denny's gorgeous songs and majestic voice. Nearly every track has the radiance and timelessness of her best Fairport Convention work, along with an accessibility she had merely hinted at prior to this...Sandy Denny's definitive (solo) musical statement." -- Brett Hartenbach/AMG. FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Full House (Island 285; EEC) Fairport Convention is a group that has always beaten the odds -- that's why a version of the band is working in the 21st century. By the time of this, the group's fifth album, key members Ashley Hutchings and Sandy Denny had exited the lineup, yet the group continued here without skipping a beat, for the first time without a female singer -- and it turned out not to make a major difference. Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick took over as singers, and Dave Pegg (more recently of Jethro Tull) joined on bass, and the resulting album was actually more viscerally exciting than its predecessor, Liege and Lief,

BILL LASWELL - Hear No Evil [2 CD set] (MetaStation 05; USA) Hear No Evil, originally released in 1988 on the Virgin Venture label, marked one of the truly world fusion creations: a world music/blues-rock/Americana feel employing 3 string players [violinist L. Shankar, guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, and bassist Laswell] and 3 percussionists [Indian tablaist Zakir Hussain, African Aiyb Dieng, and Cuban Daniel Ponce]. The original CD is remastered, and a second full length CD of two extended mix translations [appx 20 minutes each!] of the first and last cuts of the original album were created especially for this edition. Of the 500+ albums Laswell has played on/composed and/or produced in the last 20 years, this surely is in the top ten of his works for me! - Mannylunch
"Hear No Evil is an amazing fusion of Indian percussion and drone with rustic American guitar. This is one of the few CDs that puts me into a true trance, where time dissolves and all my thoughts evaporate....I just want to sit and meditate and absorb this bliss." -Yoga Basics, February '02

SHELAGH McDONALD - Album [aka Shelagh McDonald] (Mooncrest 59; EEC) Joni Mitchell meets early Fairport Convention? JBacking musicians, though unlisted on this CD reisssue, include the 'who's who" studio mafia of many of the B&C folk and jazz releases of that time, including Keith Tippett. There's a slight jazzy tinge to some of the songs, akin to the Pentangle's experiments in folk-jazz fusion, as on the spirited "Waiting for the Wind to Rise." The highlight, though, is the lovely "Ophelia's Song," which appears once in a full-band version featuring an old-timey clarinet and a full string section and later in a stark solo guitar version; both are sublime. The Mooncrest CD adds eight bonus tracks that were unreleased from the 2nd album and the never-realized 3rd album, including a remarkable early demo of that album's title track and a pointless version of the Doobie Brothers' "Jesus Is Just Alright."
CD $12.00 7 for 6 SALE
SHELAGH McDONALD - Stargazer (Mooncrest 40; EEC) British singer-songwriter Shelagh McDonald made a couple of rare folk-rock albums in the early 1970s that owed quite a bit to both Joni Mitchell and Sandy Denny. This is the 2nd of the two with several bonus unreleased cuts.

CHARLES MINGUS - A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry With Charles Mingus (Bethlehem ; USA) w/ Shafi Hadi on saxes, Clarence Shaw on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Horace Parlan or Bob Hammer on piano, Dannie Richmond on drums
CD $10.00 7 for 6 SALE.
CHARLES MINGUS - Pre-Bird [aka Mingus Revisited] (Mercury/Verve; EEC) This pair of 1960 studio sessions represent some of Charles Mingus' best arrangements. Leading the smaller of two groups, he interpolates "Exactly Like You" into a driving version of "Take The 'A' Train" and adds a soulful blues, "Prayer For Passive Resistance," both of which feature great solos by tenor saxophonists Booker Ervin, Yusef Lateef and Joe Farrell. A much larger ensemble is utilized on three tracks, including the advanced bop "Mingus Fingus No. 2" and "Bemoanable Lady," which features a rather strangely conservative alto sax solo by Eric Dolphy. Less successful are Lorraine Curson's vocals on the dissonant "Eclipse" and pulsating "Weird Nightmare." But this reissue, re-released previously under the title "Mingus Revisited", has received a superb 24-bit remastering and also includes a number of photos from the sessions. But these are small quibbles - This IS Essential Mingus!

An unusual set, this outing featured the drummer's all-star sextet (which consisted of trumpeter Richard Williams, tenor-saxophonist Clifford Jordan, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Mal Waldron and bassist Art Davis) joined by a vocal choir conducted by Coleridge Perkinson and orchestrated by Roach (who contributed all six originals). However, the apex is reached by 'The Cosmic Explorer', a 20 min 'multiple keyboards freakout'. These inimitable moments captured on this recording, confirm the greatness of this ensemble
