EBBA JAHN'S JAZZ FILM of the SOUND UNITY FESTIVAL [FIRST VISION FESTIVAL] - Rising Tones Cross [DVD] (Film Pals) Ebba Jahn's documentary of the 1985 New York Vision Jazz Festival curated by William Parker and Peter Kowald. Groups and musicians on film include Don Cherry & The Sound Unity Festival Orchestra; Jemeel Moondoc Sextet; Peter Brotzmann Ensemble; Peter Kowald Quartet; Billy Bang's Forbidden Planet; Charles Tyler Quintet; Peter Kowald Trio; William Parker & Patricia Nicholson Dance; Burton; Roy Campbell Jr.; Rudiger Carl; Daniel Carter; Dennis Charles; Ellen Christi; Curtis Clark; Marilyn Crispell; Charles Gayle; Wayne Horvitz; Masahiko Kono; Jeanne Lee; Wilber Morris; Bobby Previte; Irene Schweizer; David S. Ware; Frank Wright; John Zorn
The early 1980s were a period of transition for the avant-garde fringe in New York. The loft scene -the days in which Ornette Coleman's home on Prince Street and Sam River's Studio Rivbea provided workshops for experimenters to develop their art - was drawing to a close, and the arrival of the Knitting Factory and its explosive impact on the Downtown scene was still a few years away. It fell to the artists themselves to create new opportunities.
As chronicled in Ebba Jahn's 1984 documentary, Rising Tones Cross (just released on video), two such motivated visionaries were bassist William Parker and dancer Patricia Nicholson. The film centers around the Sound Unity Festival, a precursor to the couples' current Lower East Side bash, the now four-year old Vision Festival.
It was the German bassist Peter Kowald, on an extended sojourn in New York that included a hefty formative role in Sound Unity, who convinced Jahn to make a film about the upstart festival. "It was clear to me that I wanted to have a German protagonist and an American protagonist," Jahn says. Her friend Kowald was the German choice, naturally, but America's representative had yet to be confirmed. "Originally, I had thought of Ornette Coleman. But on the day I arrived, first thing in the morning I met Charles Gayle, the most un-famous saxophonist at that time in New York City." That meeting, combined with a chance encounter with a cameraman who was working on Shirley Clark's Coleman documentary, Made in America, led Jahn to shift her focus "from the most famous avant-garde saxophonist to the most un-famous."
"Instead of simply a compilation of festival footage - though performances by musicians like Jemeel Moondoc, Don Cherry, and Peter Broetzmann abound in the film - Rising Tones Cross was intended to be a "tool for music education. "For many people who saw he film in Germany, it was the first time they ever heard this type of music," she says. To help facilitate this reaction, Jahn put the most difficult music at the end of the film, easing the audience into it gradually. She also included a number of scenes intended to dispel common myths about free jazz. For example when Brotzmann's strapping 11-piece ensemble - boasting a tenor phalanx comprised of the leader, Gayle, David S. Ware, and Frank Wright - seems to be blowing chaotically onstage, Jahn's camera pans across Broetzmann's diagrammatic score to reveal an extraordinary amount of careful detail, planning, and scripting - the architecture girding the maelstrom. And having overcome an initial distrust and some reluctance to take part in the film, the enigmatic Gayle is revealed to be affable, erudite, and quite well-versed in jazz-history, a far cry from his dark public persona and stage presence. "He was perceived as a philosopher in Germany," says Jahn.
Now that the film is available on video. I think it's a good tool for people wanting to learn a little bit about this music. Nobody else has made a film about this music. And at the end of the century, the time is probably right for it." - Steve Smith, Jazziz
" In 1984, before Tonic or CB's Lounge or even the Knitting Factory and Rudy Giuliani, New York City was a rough-and-tumble place filled with a wonderful array of musicians in a state of hyper-creativity. Some of them had come out of the loft scene of the '70s or even earlier and were reconciling all the shades of the avant garde while others were creating entirely new vocabularies still being solidified today.
German filmmaker Ebba Jahn made 'A Jazz Film' that year with interviews, musical performances and fascinating visuals of the city before it became sterilized. For the film's 20th anniversary last year, Jahn put the film onto DVD format, a nostalgia piece for some, a valuable historical document for others. Many of the musicians featured are still active players: Charles Gayle, William Parker, John Zorn, Jemeel Moondoc, Irene Schweizer, Peter Brotzmann. And unsurprisingly, the film captures many who have departed firmly in their element: Charles Tyler, Don Cherry, Denis Charles, Peter Kowald.
The two main voices of the film are Gayle and Kowald, an American and a German playing improvised music in basements and lofts and in the Sound Unity Festival, the precursor to today's Vision Festival. The film is romantic. There is a certain appeal and charm to the images of a dirtier, grittier New York. The scene, always the scene, seemed to be more vibrant and the musicians less weighed down. And the music is wonderful, compelling stuff even for people jaded about improvised music. Rising Tones Cross provides some continuity, showing how jazz survived when pop and rap and heavy metal began to fully take over the public consciousness." - Andrey Henkin, All About Jazz

FOUR NEW LEO CDs FINALLY REACH THESE SHORES...Please note that all Leo single CDs are now priced at $17 (GY series at $18), due to the plunging US dollar. We still have a handful copies of Braxton's '[Solo] Milano 1979' (Leo GY 20 & 23) on sale for $15, until we run out & have to restock them.

ANTHONY BRAXTON/GYORGY SZABADOS/VLADIMIR TARASOV - Triotone (Leo 416/UK) Featuring Mr. Braxton on various reeds, Mr. Szabados on piano and Mr. Tarasov on percussion. This outstanding live trio performance was recorded in Serbia-Montenegro in September of 2003. We know of Russian drum wiz Tarasov from his many years with the Ganelin Trio, as well as duo disc with Andrew Cyrille. Hungarian born pianist and new music composer, Gyorgy Szabados, first played with Braxton in 1982 and recorded a rare album of duets in 1984. Considered to be the father of free-jazz in Hungary, he has worked with Peter Kowald, Evan Parker and Roscoe Mitchell in the past. His compositions combine modern jazz and contemporary classic with trad Hungarian folk music. Szabados wrote the two the first two long (40 minutes combined) pieces here with three shorter improv pieces included as well. It is wonderful to hear visionary composer, Mr. Braxton, performing the challenging music of another fine composer, besides the wealth of jazz tributes that he has done (Monk, Tristano, etc.) The title piece opens, is over a half hour and extraordinary throughout. From a reflective, dreamy beginning which slowly builds as all three players weave spaciously around one another, eventually getting more dense and intense. About two thirds through, they go through an intricate, challenging section as the tempo ascends more quickly and things become more frenzied, yet always tight. "Black Toots" is a Monk-like piece with some incredibly furious sopranino sax from Braxton, the piano and drums keeping that frantic pace and followed by an equally impressive piano solo. Three improv pieces push things even further out with Braxton bending and turning his notes inside-out as Szabados plays marvelously inside and outside the piano and Tarasov also create layers of intricate percussion. Superbly recorded and perfectly balanced make this an even better gem. - BLG

COLLECTIVE 4TET (Heinz Geisser/Mark Hennen/Jeff Hoyer/William Parker) - Moving Along (Leo 418; UK) Featuring William Parker on contrabass, Mark Hennen on piano, Jeff Hoyer on trombone and Heinz Geisser on percussion. This is the fifth cd by the wonderful Collective 4tet, who are not your average modern jazz quartet, but a more balanced collective with each member an equal part of the entire sound. 'Moving Along' features three long pieces, each one a superb demonstration of instant composition. "Drawing from the Pool" moves slowly as each player connect through duos and trios and quartet combinations. Trombonist, Jeff Hoyer, who is currently in Cecil Taylor's large (NY) ensemble, does a fine job of exploring the more restrained side of improvisations with hushed growls, muted timbres and other more cautious sounds. You can tell that bassist Parker and drummer Geisser have been playing together for quiate a while as they work splendidly together, moving together and weaving their wares superbly. Pianist Mark Hennen is also a most gifted player and someone we so rarely hear from around here, although he lives locally. He is all over the piano weaving layers of notes, always adding currents, shades and a magical thread that helps keep it all together. A marvelous collective. - BLG

THE CLARINET TRIO [GEBHARD ULLMANN/JURGEN KUPKE/MICHAEL THIEKE] - Ballads And Related Objects (Leo 415/UK) Featuring Gebhard Ullmann on bass clarinet, Jurgen Kupke on clarinet, Michael Thieke on alto clarinet and clarinet. This is Gebhard's third disc of his fine clarinet trio that now has a new member of Michael Thieke. This is a suite of 13 parts, with the last five being instant compositions. Gebhard claims that the term "ballad" has many different meanings than what one might expect. Although a few of these pieces move slowly, there are also sections like "Seven 9 - 8", that are more angular, blending modern classical with intricate jazz counterpoint. All three clarinetists play these complex pieces with great spirits and inventiveness. Often the pieces will have two of the clarinetists playing their intricate parts as the third solos above them. What really stands out is Gebhard's superb composing which pushes all three clarinetists to explore a wide dynamic range and a wealth of different sonic combinations and extended techniques. A must-have for clarinet fan-addicts like you and me. - BLG

PANDELIS KARAYORGIS - Seventeen Pieces: Solo (Leo 417/UK) Boston-based pianist, Pandelis Karayorgis, has worked with Joe and Mat Maneri, Ken Vandermark, Tony Malaby and Gregorio Guillermo and can be heard on some ten discs on (mostly) Leo, as well as a few on Hatology, Cadence and Boxholder. This is his first solo piano effort and covers some 17 songs by Monk, Tristano, Warne Marsh, Sun Ra, Eric Dolphy, Duke Ellington, as well as about half original compositions. Pandelis is quite the inventive pianist and each piece explores a wide variety of themes, ideas, dynamics and re-interpretations of standards. His own compositions are just as interesting and diverse as the tunes he covers. Both the darker Tristano ("Baby") and the quick Marsh ("Background Music") pieces show some impressive two-handed dexterity, with a couple of themes moving in different directions. A few of the original compositions remind me of Ran Blake in the way that they are angular and filled with surprising twists and turns. It is rare to hear someone covering Sun Ra's "Super Bronze", an interesting bebop blues thing that Pandelis does well by adding his own spice and even more rare to hear someone cover Dolphy's "Gazzelloni" which gets an impressive two-handed Monkish treatment. This is well-selected program which shows many of Mr Karayogis' talents as the gifted pianist that he is. - BLG

ANTHONY BRAXTON - Solo (Milano) 1979 Vol 1 (Leo GY 020; UK) In the wake of last year's release GY 17 Anthony Braxton Solo (Koln) 1978, yet another historic discovery: a quarter of a century ago Anthony Braxton played two solo concerts in Milano within a space of three days. Volume 1 is the entire concert on January 17, 1979. Many Braxton's compositions performed at this concert have never been recorded before. Considering that avant/jazz alto sax stylist, composer, professor and visionary, Anthony Braxton's long career stretches back over 35 years, his solo sax efforts are few. Beginning wit 'For Alto' in 1968, one of the first solo sax recordings, he puts out a couple per decade. In the past year however, their have been two, another Leo Golden Years historic recording and an extraordinary two cd set recorded last year at NY Ethical Culture Society. Leo has recently discovered yet another rare solo sax set from Milano, Italy in 1979. The ten tracks here consist of eight originals and two standards, "I Remember Clifford" and "Out of Nowhere". Eleven years after Braxton's solo breakthrough 'For Alto', he has invented a system of composing and named his pieces with numbers and letters as symbols. His tone and streams of notes are well measured on "Comp. No. 77b", never too fast and rarely any squawking, his tone here falls somewhere between Lee Konitz and Paul Desmond. On "Comp. No. 119a", he starts spiraling faster and more abruptly, stretching and bending notes with controlled abandon, bouncing between cautious and more ferocious extremes. By "Comp. No. 8g", he starts to stretch his notes out like putty into some twisted shapes until they don't even sound like a sax, but an anguished voice crying out. Just when you think he can't take it any further out, he takes Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford" and tempers his flame with a rather solemn lyrical reading to balance things just right. Each of his own compositions seem to explore the depths of alto sax playing with a number of unusually odd, yet highly idiosyncratic and diverse note expanding techniques, always fascinating, as they are filled with endless surprises. The other standard, "Out of Nowhere", is also well placed and balances those other further out explorations just right. Superlative, once more!

ANTHONY BRAXTON - Solo (Milano) 1979 Vol 2 (Leo GY 023; UK) A quarter of a century ago Anthony Braxton played two solo concerts in Milano within a space of three days. Following the success and importance of the Solo (Milano) 1979, it's only natural to release another solo concert played one day later. There are twelve pieces on this CD, but they do not overlap with the compositions performed by Braxton the day before. Five of the twelve pieces come from out of the jazz tradition. Usually Braxton keeps his own compositions and standards separately, but this is a very rare concert when the two came together. Liner notes by Steve Day.

TWO NEW RELEASES IN PAUL DUNMALL'S LTD EDITION 'DUNS' SERIES...

PAUL DUNMALL/PHILIP GIBBS/STEVE DAVIS/DAVE KANE - Bernd Wimmer On The Burnt Zimmer (Duns 042/UK) Featuring Dunmall on tenor & soprano saxes, Philip Gibbs on guitar, Dave Kane on double bass and Steve Davis on drums. This is another marvelous studio date, recorded at the Victoria Rooms in Bristol with our favorite unsung hero doing the recording, mixing and mastering - Jonathan Scott. Again, our favorite British saxist, bandleader, label-head and member of Mujician has found another couple of great musicians with whom I am previously unfamiliar. I can't recall having heard of either (bassist) Dave Kane or (drummer) Steve Davis before this, but monster guitarist Philip Gibbs is now on some thirty discs by Dunmall as well as that one great duo disc with another unrecognized and amazing picker named John Adams. The title piece is first and already the rhythm team sounds most impressive. Jon Scott's fabulous production always gives all the players such massive depth and presence. Dunmall is playing his tenor sax and he has that grand Trane-like tone, so thick, so warm yet so powerful. Gibbs is playing electric guitar and is incredible right from this opening chords, strumming and casting his spell, frenetically soaring and weaving lightning-like lines of notes matching Dunmall's soaring tenor. There is an impressive duo section for tenor and guitar about midway with Paul and Philip tossing ideas back and forth. When the bass and drums re-enter, that instant communication continues with all four blending together into one grand unit. These cats are just too much, when they finally explode it is like a volcano erupting and spewing forth molten lava all over all of us and it certainly feels just right. - BLG
Limited edition CD-R for $14

PAUL DUNMALL/BRUCE COATES/PHILIP GIBBS/HILARY JEFFREY - Live At The Old Library (Duns 043/UK) Featuring Paul Dunmall & Bruce Coates on soprano & tenor saxes, Philip Gibbs on guitar and Hilary Jeffrey on trombone. Bruce Coates is a fine saxist who appears only on one previous Duns release, a great duet with Dunmall called '19 Years Later' (Duns 35). Whereas guitarist Philip Gibbs can be found on dozens of Duns discs and trombonist Hilary Jeffrey on a handful of previous discs, including his own solo effort on FMR. Without a rhythm team, the quartet remain often more cerebral. The epic-length "For Reference Only" begins with two floating soprano saxes and eventually that great Gibbs guitar comes in tapping on his acoustic freely, yet always focused on his comrades interaction. The trombone is further away, yet drones and hums and quietly soars into a fine duet with the guitar. There are many moments when all four are playing together and there is a magical, solid group sound or personality that is quite distinct. All four have a way of bending and twisting notes so that they move together anticipating each other's motion. It is difficult to tell who is doing what since one player will start a phrase and another will join in and extend that idea. This type of telepathy is was makes great improv so special, so rich in transporting us some else. About halfway through the first piece, that slow motion cosmic vibe takes over and we're gliding through the air like a bird. It is really a beautiful thing. There are a number of magical moments here so take some time and go for a ride. - BLG
Limited edition CD-R for $14

ULTRALYD [FRODE GJERSTAD/KJETIL BRANDSDAL/ANDERS HANA/MORTEN OLSEN] - Chromosome Gun (Load 70; USA) This features Frode on alto sax & clarinet, Anders on electric guitar, Kjetil on bass & Morten on drums. It shouldn't surprise anyone that this punk/jazz disc is on a noise/rock label called Load Records. This is the second Ultralyd disc, the first was on FMR, strangely enough. Powerful, intense, in-your-face, over-the-top, yet it works and reminds of the bad shape the world is in and all the pain we must deal with. Very tight, focused, creative and angry. Interesting that Frode, who must be pushing 60 can and does go the distance with these young whippersnappers. In the eighties, this would've been on SST and Ultralyd would be sharing bills with Black Flag & Saccharine Trust. Am I getting too old for this? Hell no, I will be attending some those noise shows at Victo this year. I guess I ain't over the hill yet!
CD $11

MILO FINE/DAVU SERU/ELLIOT FINE - Percussion Music: Improvised [2 CD set] (Elfin EFP 1/2; USA) The first disc and 16 minutes of the 2nd disc are a trio of Milo Fine [drum set, bowed cymbals, floor cymbals, tambourne], Davu Seru [drum set, homemade metallophone] and Elliot Fine [snare drum, tom-toms, hi-hat, cymbals, brass pipes, etc] in live performance May 10th 2004. The remaining 55 minutes of disc 2 are Milo performing solo live on June 15th 2004. 2 CD set for $16

BRIAN ENO'S CLASSIC ALBUMS: FOUR MORE ENTRIES IN THE SERIES OF REMASTERED REISSUES BEGINS WITH ONE THAT'S NEVER BEEN ON CD BEFORE, AND WAS ONLY IN LTD RELEASE ON VINYL WAY-BACK-WHEN...

BRIAN ENO - More Music For Films [aka Music For Films II...Plus] (Astralwerks 63649; USA) NEVER BEFORE RELEASED ON CD! (With Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, John Cale, Phil Manzanera, Phil Collins, Percy Jones, Dave Mattacks, Paul Rudolph, Bill MacCormick, Rod Melvin, Rhett Davies, Daniel Lanois, Roger Eno) This a new compilation combining all 14 tracks from the 'Music For Films The Director's Edition' promo (1976) [only 500 were issued for distribution to film directors only] which didn't subsequently appear on the commercially released album 'Music For Films', plus the 6 tracks from 'Music for Films Volume 2', the LP that only appeared in a boxset of Eno's LPs, that did not subsequently appear on the Apollo album.

BRIAN ENO - Music For Films (Astralwerks 63646; USA) 2005 Remaster (With Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, John Cale, Phil Manzanera, Phil Collins, Percy Jones, Dave Mattacks, Paul Rudolph, Bill MacCormick, Rod Melvin, Rhett Davies). Recorded intermittently between 1975 and 1978 and originally released only privately as a library edition (with a somewhat different set of cuts) for the film industry, Music for Films compiles moody, instrumental electronic pieces intended as soundtrack material for imaginary motion pictures; the songs are brief and fragmentary, ranging from the haunting "Sparrowfall" to the luminous, densely layered "Quartz." -- Jason Ankeny AMG
CD $15

BRIAN ENO - Thursday Afternoon (Astralwerks 63648; USA) 2005 Remaster Eno's creative endeavors shifted in the mid-'80s to sound-and-light installations, involving unconventional use of video monitors. This CD-only 1985 album was conceived as the soundtrack to one of his experimental videos, which, believe it or not, can be viewed properly only with the TV on its side. This uninterrupted 61-minute piece is probably the first recording created specifically to take advantage of the length of the CD format. Muted piano notes hang suspended in the air, while a soft monochordal synthesizer ambience slowly and subtly unfolds. Perhaps more than any other of his works, Thursday Afternoon epitomizes what Eno calls his "holographic" compositional style, where any brief section of the music is truly representative of the whole. The mood here is spacious and distinctly contemplative. -- Backroads Music/Heartbeats AMG
CD $15

BRIAN ENO With DANIEL LANOIS & ROGER ENO - Apollo: Atmospheres And Soundtracks (Astralwerks 63647; USA) 2005 Remaster. An exquisite experiment, Apollo is Eno's spacescapes [commisioned for a NASA documentary] arranged with some heavenly pedal steel guitar by Daniel Lanois and dreamy piano motifs from brother Roger's Satie-esque sensibilties . The recording engulfs the listener and captures the feel of space travel, weightlessness, and other sensations vividly. It's also perhaps Eno's warmest record ever. In the end, it comes off sounding not unlike a Grateful Dead experiment, with Lanois ' lazy pedal steel sounding quite similar to Jerry Garcia 's playing on David Crosby 's "Laughing." An excellent nighttime vehicle. -- Matthew Greenwald AMG

While it took me while to get into Bladik (and I'm not knocking that disc-I love it), Rumours was an instant success with me. Other details: It's a live set, recorded 26th October 1996 at the Vortex in London. It's the complete first set and the last part of the second. It was recorded just before Bladik (the previous day? I don't have the other disc in front of me), which was done in a studio. Conclusion: Buy It!

PAUL DUNMALL - Quartet and Sextet/Babu Trio [2 CD set] (Slam 207; UK) 'Powerful and passionate music' Chris Parker BBC Music Magazine. Recorded Kidderminster 1993 On this two-disc set, the second disc features Mujician without Tippett! Disc one is quite interesting, too. It has a quartet consisting of two tenor saxes (Simon Picard is the other one) above the Rogers and Levin rhythm section. What makes the composed heads on this disc extraordinary is that Dunmall claims to have "whipped them up" at the last minute. Quite a talent to create such heads so quickly.. There are no expectations for disc two, just pure improvisation. The two discs represent two sides of the same coin, and one needs the other to survive.

HOWARD RILEY - Air Play (Slam 244; UK) solo piano. ".. one of the jazz world's most immediately recognisable and unfussily virtuosic pianists.. A genuine original at the peak of his powers." Chris Parker, BBC Music

NGUYEN LE QUARTET - Walking on the Tigers Tail (Act 9432/Germany) Featuring Nyguyen Le on guitars & electronics, Art Lande on piano, Paul McCandless on saxes, double reeds & bass clarinet and Jamey Haddad on drums. French/Vietnamese guitarist Nguyen Le has worked with a diverse cast of singers and players from Ray Charles to Cheb Mami to Michel Portal to Kudsi Erguner to Peter Erskine, blending many worlds, jazz, ethnic, rock and other influences. His appears to be his tenth disc as a leader, his last was a great Hendrix tribute that I reviewed last year. There is no bassist in this quartet, so each member takes over the bass duties at different times. Nguyen writes nice tunes with often sunny melodies and plays some short, quick fusiony solos. A few of the pieces have melodies that sound like the type of tune that Oregon might've recorded way back when, which makes perfect sense since Paul McCandless was (and still is) one quarter of Oregon. Even when the melodies get a bit too cute, the guitar, reeds or piano still take inspired solos. Nguyen adds a bit of electronics here and there like some subtle spice. There is something very calming about this music, a soft elegance, a melancholy vibe. Certainly not your average downtown noise-fest either. - BLG

STEFFEN BASHO-JUNGHANS - Unknown Music 1: Alien Letter (Sillyboy 008/Italy). "'Alien Letter is the 1st project of a series of guitar 'excursions into the Unknown', most of them dialogues with one guitar, recorded live and pure (in my living room) to dat and edited gently. Into this one I came deep at night, when I took a guitar to close the 'day' with some sounds. The channel characteristics are those of the player position. No overdubs or reverb have been added.' - SBJ, Berlin, August 2004. This is how Steffen describes his brand new album, the first one for Sillyboy Records. For us, Alien Letter is another fascinating chapter in Junghans' outstanding musical career - and one of the most mysteriously intriguing. This time, the Berlin-based acoustic guitarist is really mapping uncharted territories and the result is this dense, massive album, linked to the tradition of both Derek Bailey and John Fahey, but also one step forward, out in the unknown. Quite literally beyond description, spiritual and out-there, Alien Letter has probably more in common with the healing power of Albert Ayler and surely it is a deeply personal missive from one of today's greatest acoustic guitarists."

RICK COX - Fade (Cold Blue Music CB00020) Rick Cox (electric guitar) and Peter Freeman (bass and signal processing) create a sensuous soundscape, while Thomas Newman (acoustic piano) inserts occasional quiet tuned percussion comments. This is quite an amazing floating sound world that reminds me of Brian Eno's recent work. Note that both Cox and Freeman have worked with Jon Hassell in recent years. - David Beardsley

JIM FOX - Descansos, past (Cold Blue Music CB00021) Written for double bass and nine cellos, Descanso, past majestically gives tribute to the memory of composer/performer John Kuhlman. Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, Jessica Catron, Aniela Perry, and Rachel Arnold multi-tracked the cello parts while Barry Newton performs the bass part. This is some really beautiful music. The pizzicato bass and the bowed cellos hold an intense dialog, the bass supporting the strings while they play sustained chords and melodies or the strings backing up the bass while he solos. - David Beardsley
CD-EP for $9

KYLE GANN - Long Night (Cold Blue Music CB00019) Featuring Sarah Cahill on three unsynchronized pianos, Long Night was written in 1980 when the composer was only 24. The piece has rippling quality, like soft light illuminating a quiet room off an antique mirror, on a cloudy afternoon just before Easter, on the way down stream to later. Ambient without being minimal, classical without the powdered wig and contemporary without being electronic. - David Beardsley

ICONOCLAST - The Dreadful Dance (Fang 319-05) "Iconoclast is a duo comprised of Julie Joslyn (alto saxophone, live electronics, violin, vocals) and Leo Ciesa (drums, percussion, keyboards, octapad, vocals). You should recognize Leo's name as the longtime drummer for Dr. Nerve. Ciesa and Joslyn have been composing and performing together for almost 20 years - since the beginning of 1987, and have developed an eclectic body of material. Their music and performance is known for its intensity, physicality and 'larger than duo' impact. Acoustic and electric music exists side by side as the music moves between improvisation and composition. Ciesa and Joslyn's joy in playing and their love of all forms of music are evident in their compositions and in their distinctive sound." This is their fifth fine disc. No one really sounds like Iconoclast.

RICHARD BLIWAS - Walk the Bike (Rising Rose) Featuring Richard Bliwas on piano, organ & vocals, Dave Tronzo on guitars, Michael Blake on saxes, Joey Barbaro on accordion, Ben Allison on bass and Jamey Haddad on drums. So, this very pleasant, slightly goofy fellow, Rich Bliwas, comes in the store last month and hands not one but three CDs he has put out over the past five years to check them out. This one, a sextet, a trio with Ben Allison & Michael Blake and a quartet with three folks I don't know. 'Walk the Bike' is from 2000, features the above-mentioned sextet and was the first one I checked out. The songs are kinda cute, precious and a bit quirky. A cool, mellow blend of Van Dyke Parks, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson and other sixties influences, but with some nice jazz piano liberally added. Richard does a fine job of layering his quaint voice into a somber chorus throughout. There 24 short songs here, many with vocals but a number of nifty instrumental ones as well. None of the musicians get a chance to solo very much, but all add their magic touch or unique sound to many of these tunes. Tronzo, Michael Blake and Ben Allison sound great adding inventive sounds and occasional short solos throughout. If I didn't know better I would think that this was recorded in the late sixties of early seventies, nothing dates this exquisite music. Timeless. - BLG

RICHARD BLIWAS - Compare Yourself / ten improvisations (Rising Rose) Featuring on Richard Bliwas on piano, Ben Allison on acoustic bass and Michael Blake on clarinet & sax. This is also from 2000 and is an all-instrumental solo/duo/trio work. Half the pieces are solo piano pieces, which are mostly eloquent and softly haunting. Richard writes quaint little vignettes, which sound just right with soft clarinet and minimal bass. Although Richard calls these tunes "improvisations" each one does a good job of evoking a mood, often somber and reflective. Richard never plays too many notes, using a minimal amount in just the right way, nothing superfluous. The entire CD sounds like a suite of connected pieces, solo/trio/solo/trio/solo/duo/solo/duo/solo/trio, yet it flows together. Michael Blake's bluesy, bluster on tenor sax is well-placed on "Six Eyes", as is his clarinet on a couple of other sections. There are two long pieces here which I dig the best, "Remote Lack of Control" is a playful solo piano work, that blends elements of ragtime, free bits, the blues and seems to tell a little tale as it unfolds. Also, the lengthy "Sight Red" for piano and clarinet tells a sad story about the loss of innocence. I really didn't expect much from this goofy, talkative dude who dropped off these three little jewels, but then again, there is a lesson I seem to learn over and over: never judge a book by its cover. - BLG

RICHARD BLIWAS - Ghost (Rising Rose) 'Ghost' features Richard on piano, organ, Rhodes el. piano & vocals, Charles Ned Goold on alto (sax), Ben Sher on guitar and Valtinho Anastacio on percussion. This gem was released in 2003 and can't say that I am very familiar with any of the musicians involved, although guitarist Ben Sher did play with (Matt Darriau & Frank London's) Ballin' the Jack, who had two discs on Knit Works, and Ben also has three solo discs out on his own label since then. Obviously a bit more stripped down than the above sextet disc, this trio/quartet also do a fine job of adding some tasty playing to Richard's great laid back, bluesy, jazzy tunes. With 16 instead of 24 songs here (like on his first effort), the songs are a bit longer and feature some fine piano and organ from Richard. He again layers his vocals at times to create different voices or a chorus to answer the lead voice. Sounds like Richard has the blues on this date, all the songs seem to deal with the sadder side of life, when things just don't go right. - BLG

JULIAN COPE - Citizen Cain'd (Head Heritage 018/UK) "Finally, Julian Cope's almost mythical album Citizen Cain'd is here! Talked about in Cope interviews for 5 years and promised at concerts during Cope's 'between songs banter' for even longer than that, Head Heritage can now announce the release of this album of brand new songs. The 12 tracks include the long-time concert favorites 'I'm Living in the Room They Found Saddam In' and 'Feels Like A Crying Shame', the latter appearing in a blissed-out 11-minute incarnation. Although all the material would have fitted on to one single CD, Cope has chosen to release Ctizen Cain'd as two short CDs of 34 and 37 minutes respectively; taking this approach because he deemed several of the songs 'too psychologically exhausting' for one single listen. However, Ctizen Cain'd is being sold for a single album price, and arrives sumptuously packaged in a gloss black outer cardboard case and opaque black double-jewel case. This latter item has been, according to Cope, employed to ape the black obsidian of the Mediterranean, and certainly adds to the feeling of mystery that surrounds this record. Indeed, the combination of heavy fuzzed-out balladry and ostentatious packaging combine to lend this new album an atmosphere most reminiscent of his 1992 album 'Jehovahkill'. However, in true Cope style, the subject matter of 'Citizen Cain'd' is entirely 21st century in its content.

CHARLES MINGUS - Triumph Of The Underdog [DVD] (Shanachie 6315; USA) Don McGlynn's uncompromising and soulful documentary look at the tumultuous life of musician and rebel Charles Mingus is fascinating stuff. Mingus said of himself "I am half black man, half yellow man, but I claim to be a Negro. I am Charles Mingus, the famed jazz musician--but not famed enough to make a living in America." His statement summed up the conflict that plagued this musical genius his entire life: volatility, pain, prescience, and raw rage roiled inside a complex man, composer, bass player, and trombonist who transcended labels and refused to be pigeonholed into a single musical style--and who did not achieve real fame until late in his career. The documentary is full of well-preserved footage and contains interviews with many Mingus followers like Wynton Marsalis as well as performances by icons Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Gerry Mulligan. The film traverses past the musical legend with insight and information into Mingus's personal life, his civil rights activism, and his final triumph in the music world--just as his body began to deteriorate from Lou Gehrig's disease--to his eventual death in 1979. Mingus left a legacy composed of genius, vulnerability, brilliance, anarchy, and, as one friend noted, "the entire range of human emotion that is reflected in his music." --Paula Nechak

EDDIE HENDERSON With HERBIE HANCOCK/BENNIE MAUPIN/BILLY HART/PATRICK GLEESON/LENNY WHITE/ERIC GRAVATT - Anthology Vol 2 - Capricorn Years: Realization/Inside Out (Soul Brother 11; UK) Eddie Henderson's first two - and most mindblowing - albums complete on 1 CD! Recorded in 1973 for Capricorn records, these two albums 'Realization' and 'Inside Out', featured the Herbie Hancock Mwandishi band of which Eddie was a core player. These albums have been in demand for many years, and this is the first time they have issued on CD anywhere in the world. These albums are highly regarded by jazz critics, and are cited as amongst the best of early 70's jazz- fusion.
"REALIZATION: Although the electric Herbie Hancock Sextet (and septet) left only a slim three-album discography on Warner Bros. and Columbia, you can expand it considerably by adding the two LPs that Eddie Henderson made as a leader on Capricorn -- a Georgia rock label known mostly for recording the Allman Brothers. Henderson's band is, in fact, the Hancock Septet minus Julian Priester, but with a second drummer (Lenny White) added, and they play the same brand of fantastic, electronically charged, intergalactic jazz-rock. Henderson extends and develops the Hancock approach, sputtering and moving laconically about in a manner greatly affected by Miles Davis but more ebullient in tone. There are five compositions here, most of them by Henderson, with a contribution from Hancock (the subtly beautiful "Revelation") and the delicately textured "Anua" from Bennie Maupin. The drumming (from White and Billy Hart) is brilliantly propulsive; Hancock logs a lot of solo time and gets to play with his echoplex, while Pat Gleeson slips in mind-blowing streaks and whooshes of sound from his Moog and ARP synthesizers. This is one of the great lost treasures of the jazz-rock era; the music is a bit looser than that of the Hancock records yet every bit as invigorating and forward-thrusting.
INSIDE OUT: The Herbie Hancock Septet was technically out of business around this time, superseded by the Headhunters, yet it shouldered on briefly in the studio for a second album under the leadership of its trumpeter Eddie Henderson. With Bennie Maupin back on a variety of reeds, Hancock on electric keyboards, Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Hart on drums, Henderson again had rounded up everyone in the group except Julian Priester, adding second drummer Eric Gravatt (from Weather Report) and Bill Summers (from the Headhunters) on congas. One can feel the funky influence of the Headhunters entering the building, particularly in the bass-lines and Hancock's wah-wah keyboard work, but this is still very much the music of the Septet -- open-ended and almost free, heavily electronic, spiritual in intent, and enormously stimulating. Although Henderson and Maupin control the repertoire, the trumpeter continues to interact virtually as an equal among equals, sounding more haunting and free-floating now. Drier in texture and less frantically driven than its predecessor, Inside Out nevertheless is the de facto swan song of one of the great bands of jazz/rock. Presumably Polydor owns this stuff, as they do the other Capricorn albums from this time, so they ought to reissue both Hendersons on a single CD if they have any sense of history. [which is exactly what Soul Brother has done for this CD!]" - Richard S. Ginell, AMG "Possibly the most acid-drenched far-out fusion blow-outs ever recorded, Fans of high quality early Miles fusion or early electro-funk recordings who haven't heard this - it will blow your minds! ALL THUMBS UP! - MannyLunch

ARTHUR RUSSELL - World Of Echo [2 LP set] (Audika 1002; USA) "A truly gifted and enigmatic sonic genius, cellist and composer Arthur Russell spent his all-too-brief career living an artistic double life. In the 1970's, he could be found performing and collaborating with the likes of such downtown luminaries as Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, Peter Zummo, David Byrne, Phill Niblock, Ernie Brooks, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, David Van Tiegham... the list runs a mile long. After a visit one night in 1977 to NYC DJ Nicky Siano's dance club the Gallery, he had an epiphany - he discovered the cyclic repititions of disco songs to be not so far removed from those in systems music and so-called "minimalist" avant-garde compositions. As a result, Russell befriended and collaborated with many New York DJs and dance producers such as Larry Levan, Steve D'Aquisto, and Walter Gibbons; under names such as Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, and Indian Ocean, he created some of the most otherworldly and timeless rhythm pieces ever recorded - avant-garde compositions designed to be danced to, many of them still played in clubs today! Throughout his entire career, Russell strove to find a way to "redefine 'songs' from the point of view of instrumental music," to seamlessly "liquify a raw material where concert music and popular song can criss cross." After working with producer Gary Lucas on Peter Gordon's 1986 CBS LP "Innocent," Russell scored (thanks to Lucas) a record deal at Upside Records, who soon after released what is considered by many to be Russell's masterpiece - "World of Echo," his third album. A breathtaking album of loosely-structured (and in some cases seemingly improvised) songs for solo cello, voice, and minimal percussion, Russell creates a soundscape like nothing that has come before or after it - even 18 years after its initial release! Playing his cello and singing through numerous electronic echo and delay boxes, Russell bows, taps, scrapes, sighs, and floats through an album that blends elements of indian raga, the slurred vocalese and folk tendencies of John Martyn circa "Solid Air," and the endless reverberations of dub reggae pioneers such as King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry, creating a "Pink Moon" for the Deep-Listening set. Now, thanks to Steve Knutson's Audika Records, the album FINALLY is reissued as a double LP with WITH the 4 bonus cuts from the recent CD edition, remastered by longtime Russell collaborator Ray Janos from the artist's personal 1/4" sequenced tapes, sounding even better than the original LP release, Personally speaking this is, without question, my alltime favorite album - the ONE record that's coming with me to that desert island all record collectors have nightmares of oneday being stranded on. Dubheads, deep listeners, ambient enthusiasts, folkies, avant pop fans, and the musically eclectic in general - this one's for you. Put on those headphones and let's go swimming." -Mikey "IQ" Jones at DMG."

MALLARD [ZOOT HORN ROLLO/ROCKETTE MORTON/ED MARIMBA et al] - Mallard/In A Different Climate (Virgin; EEC) The only two efforts from Mallard, originally done for Virgin, combined on a single compact disc. This is a very convenient way to pick up the entirety of Mallard's output
MALLARD was formed by BILL HARKLEROAD (Zoot Horn Rollo) and MARK BOSTON (Rockette Morton) who were vital MAGIC BAND musicians playing with CAPTAIN BEEFHEART from 1968 through 1974, along with master percussionist ARTIE TRIPP (Ed Marimba). In 1974, that trio departed from Don Van Vliet to record an eponymous album in England with Sam Galpin on vocals along with guests Rabbit Bundrick and Barry Morgan. Ted Alvy had cosmic good fortune to write lyrics on the four Mallard songs. Artie Tripp left before the 2nd album and was replaced by George Draggota, whilst Rabbit was replaced on keys by John Thomas, and guest John McPhee appears on 1 cut.

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - I Prophesy Disaster (Virgin; UK) So why a duck? I Mean, why buy a compilation CD when you if you like 'em - or Peter Hammill, you probably got the individual albums on CD? Well, if you don't got 'em, this is a well thought-out sampler to start with - and if you do have other VDGG stuff, be aware that this contains the single's version of 'Refugees', as well as the b-sides "The Boat Of Million Years", "W", and "Ship Of Fools" [studio version]", non of which are contained on the other indivdual VDGG CDs! Also includes classics like "Lemmings, "Necromancer" and "Arrow" amongst its 10 cuts. Recommended!

CHRIS SQUIRE With BILL BRUFORD/PATRICK MORAZ - Fish Out Of Water (Atlantic; Germany) Yes-like in every possible aspect, Chris Squire's Fish out of Water is an album that's typical of his band's progressive formula: softened keyboard extensions a la Patrick Moraz, steady yet atmospheric percussion work from Bill Bruford, and a smattering of flute and saxophone that accompanies a small orchestra, which includes effective horn and harp work. Squire's guitar playing is standard, coming to life the most on "Silently Falling" and "Lucky Seven," with the former boosted by a rather dazzling synthesizer solo from Moraz. Even though there are few surprises laid out on the album's five tracks, the elemental composition of pure '70s progressive rock is strewn across each song from start to finish. Squire even sounds like Jon Anderson, especially on "Hold out Your Hand," and each of the song's melodies cater to Squire's vocal ascent. Fish out of Water harbors some firm instrumental and vocal cross-breeding while remaining well within the prog rock norm. - Mike DeGagne, AMG "One of the absolute great orchestral art-rock albums, check out the last track "Safe! Ten Thumbs UP!" - MannyLunch

MARSUPILAMI - Marsupilami (Breathless 52012) "This album, originally released in 1970 on Transatlantic, is made up of dark, foreboding music that touches upon the early prog scene (lots of organ, flute, electric guitar) but also throws in some folky passages and jazz experimentations as well. It is somewhat of a cross between bands like The Strawbs, Nektar, Jethro Tull, East of Eden, Atomic Rooster, and at times King Crimson.

UNICORN - Uphill All the Way (Breathless 52011) "In 1969, the members of British beat band Unicorn listened to the debut Crosby, Stills & Nash album and began transforming into a country-rock outfit. They began recording for the U.K. folk label Transatlantic, and a young producer was brought in (Hugh Murphy). This debut album from 1971 is a blend of country, folk and rock music - simple and uncluttered, mellow and soothing. In many ways it recalls early Kris Kristofferson or Gordon Lightfoot with a blend of the Byrds and the Band. Soon after this album's release, the band was discovered by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour who began sitting in with the band and producing their demos. Unicorn's Uphill All The Way is a long lost, but very worthwhile British folk rock classic."

SCOTT WALKER - 5 Easy Pieces [5 CD Box-Set] (Mercury 81044/UK) 2003 release, 96 tracks across 5 themed CDs ('Bedsit Dramas', 'Songs of a Lady, Love & Loss', 'Songs from Europe & America', '15 big hits' and 'Music >From Film and for Films'). Many rare & deleted tracks. Scott's soundtrack work collected on one CD for the first time. 56 page booklet of notes. "Anthologizing Scott Walker's career is a daunting task. Along with Walker, perhaps only The Beatles, Roxy Music, John Cale and David Bowie have engulfed themselves in both art and pop and created such riches in each vein. Incredibly, Walker swung much further in each direction than any of those other artists, singing standards (and other housewives' choices) on a TV variety show, and creating famously impenetrable, esoteric work on his most recent (a loosely used term here, to be sure) solo albums. Therefore, the first challenge of any examination of his career demands rectifying the split between his more populist and cerebral impulses. Happily, the five-disc, 93-track 5 Easy Pieces rises to the challenge, capturing the on-the-surface duality between Walker's MOR song styling and his avant-garde leanings, as well as demonstrating the common ground shared by everything he did in between. With a large number of rare and out-of-print tracks sitting alongside most of his best-known work, this is a rare collection that would appeal to both Walker devotees and novices. And with a few exceptions, each disc is arranged chronologically, demonstrating in some cases that Walker's unusual path didn't have as many sharp turns as most would think... An increasingly revered figure, Scott Walker is a singular craftsmen, one of rock's few individuals to demonstrate a willingness to both embrace elements of the unfashionable and ignore prevailing trends, yet also display an acute awareness of contemporary sounds. Forgoing many of the stylistic trappings of rock, Walker has explored a broad range of Western musical styles and displayed an intellectualism that is at times subversive, hilarious, cutting and poignant. It's a slight bit odd to attempt to delve into the heart and mind of one of pop's most anomalous and enigmatic figures by examining his work - that's an approach more often reserved for long-departed painters, sculptors or writers who created in often self-conscious 'periods.' Therefore, as an exploration of an artist's psyche, 5 Easy Pieces is incomplete at best. More importantly, however, as an exploration of this artist's career, it's endlessly rewarding, almost wholly engrossing, and long overdue." - Scott Plagenhoef/Pitchfork

RAINBOW FFOLLY - Sallies Fforth...Plus (See For Miles; UK) Reissue of all the existing material (their one album and the a-side of their one single) by this UK psych band from 1968. "Obviously influenced by labelmates The Beatles, the sole album of Rainbow Ffolly is a psychedelic delight of the first order. Lush, inventive arrangements and sharp winning melodies are presented i a truly wide range of styles at once both sophisticated and witty. it can be said without exaggeration that this album exceeds on musical grounds the period piece value of many of its contemporaries. Great use of sound effects contribute to its excellence, while the feeling is so thoroughly English as on few other albums. The vast diversity and great accessibility make it hard to understand why this album was completely ignored, but makes it completely clear why it is as sought after as it is." - The Tapestry of Delights

T*I*M*E [TIME] - Time/Smooth Ball (See For Miles; UK) The complete recordings (2 albums) by this west coast band who recorded these in 1968/69. "T.I.M.E. - an acronym for Trust In Men Everywhere - are one of the great West Coast groups of the 60's. Over two albums they explored a wide range of musical styles, blues, pop and psychedelia, fusing them together into a seamless studio sound which was genuinely enthralling."- Brian Hogg
