ROBERT FRIPP - Love Cannot Bear: Soundscapes Live In The USA (DGM 0552) "Soundscape performances, typically, visit several moods, areas of reflection, consideration & personal interest, such as: queer space (ambiguous environments); threnody & lamentation; paradise, paradise lost & paradise regained; foreboding; mourning; quietude; sonic pleroma; affirmation.
Affirmations, statements & declarations of faith that the creation is benevolent (despite all evidence to the contrary) are, in these Soundscape settings, mainly diatonic. As such, they are often easier listening than the atonal, polytonal & chromatic music of other Soundscape areas." - Robert Fripp.
This disc, originally announced as being a single performance from this year, has instead become a program of various times/places, mostly between 1995-2005, but also including the masterful "Easter Sunday" recorded in 1983 and only previously released as a low-fi flexi-disc (remember those?) in the special Robert Fripp issue of Guitar Player Jan. '86
"I was fortunate to attend Robert's solo performance at the NY Ethical Cultural Society in June 2005, as well as the World Financial Center concerts in 2000, parts of which are to be found on this disc. Words fail me in explaining how extremely fantastic the musical journey Robert takes us on! Still, I met those who remarked afterwards such expressions of disappointment as, "Does he also play regular guitar?" If you're looking for solos in the traditional 'up-front' sense, perhaps you will also be disappointed. But if you're one of our regular DMG denizens, whose aim is to travel in search of the wondrous unknowns of musics yet to be made, this will fulfill your every yearning.
My absolute highest recommendation - GOOGLEPLEX THUMBS UP! - goes to this shining example of a musician who is presenting all the genius of both his very deep understanding of mankind's history of musical compositional theory AND his extreme prowess as a practitioner of the art of the guitar - and its technological frontiers - to arrive at a singular sublime result that is NOT a maudlin advertisement for either - Manny 'Lunch' Maris

NINE HORSES [DAVID SYLVIAN/STEVE JANSEN/BURNT FRIEDMAN] - Snow Borne Sorrow (SamadhiSound 006) "Nine Horses' Snow Borne Sorrow is a collaboration between David Sylvian, his brother and frequent collaborator / drummer Steve Jansen (also formerly of Japan) and electronic composer / remixer Burnt Friedman. Lyrically and vocally, Snow Borne Sorrow continues the maturing darkness of Sylvian's last solo release Blemish - songs of struggle, doubt and resolve, Bergman-like glimpses of the realities and difficulties of intimate relationship, flashes of light and humility and caustic words about the excuses our leaders manage to find not to 'love thy neighbor.' Snow Borne Sorrow was made with a cast of contributors, including Norwegian trumpeter and Supersilent member Arve Henriksen, Swedish vocalist Stina Nordenstam, who adds marvellously elliptical responses to Sylvian's vocal on the opening 'Wonderful World,' and Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano. On the title for the album Sylvian says: 'Winter provokes introspection. Even more so the long hard winters surrounded by that cushioning, muted, numbing whiteness. It can also be a time of enormous creativity, of resolutions, resoluteness, clarity and conviction.'"

MONIKA H BAND [MONIKA HEIDEMANN] - Bright (MH 2005) Outstanding and little known local treasure from this great new singer and her incredible band. The H. Band consists of Monika Heidemann on vocals, Khabu Doug Young on guitar, Matt Moran (from Claudia Quintet) on vibes, Massimo Biolcati on bass and Take Toriyama on drums. When a rather shy and charming young woman named Monika, left us with her new disc to check out, little did we know what a surprise we were in for! I slipped it in the CD player and BAM! Bret (new DMG guy) and myself were flabbergasted. The first piece, "Organs" is an astonishing opening track, first we hear subtle layers of Monika's enchanting voice, then it explodes into a progressive rocking epic, with some fine electric guitar and vibes. Monika's rich and enigmatic lyrics are another wonderful thing to ponder, and will have us all guessing for quite a while. She has also chosen some important words to sing from the poetry of Brion Gysin, Herman Melville (both with the music of Steve Lacy), Allen Ginsberg and Marc Riordan.
Monika does a swell job with Gysin and Lacy's "Somebody Special", which also features some fine alto sax from Jeremy Udden. On this track, as well as elsewhere, Monika's voice sound uncannily like Julie Tippetts, one of our favorite vocalists of all time, from her 70's solo offerings. "Details" is a delightful, laid back and luscious piece, with exquisite bowed vibes, delicate & magical electric guitar and Monika's touching and dream-like voice. On the title piece, Monika uses a chorus of voices and a viola to add to the dreamy quality of this fine work. "Keep On" is a feisty little progressive gem, that wouldn't sound out of place on the next Claudia Quintet disc. Khabu Doug Young, local guitar hero, whose name keeps popping up in different bands, plays with taste and creative spirit throughout. Vibist, Matt Moran, also adds his out superb and sublime magic on each piece, another busy and in-demand local wonder. The final piece is a Herman Melville poem called "Art" with music by Steve Lacy. It is a dark and mysterious work with some minimal free elements floating with Monika's disembodied vocals. Strange, yet it works to bring us to those murky waters that flow around us when we are not sure which way to go. If you would like check out Monika H., she has two shows coming up soon. Monika Heidemann with Oscar Noriega & Josh Sinton (on reeds) & Khabu Doung Young (guitar) will perform select vocal works of Steve Lacy & Brion Gysin Thurs, Nov. 10th at 10pm at the Cornelia St. Cafe. The Monika H. Band will perform songs from her new CD at the 55 (Christopher St.) Bar on December 14th, from 7-9 pm. - BLG

LAURA ANDEL/ELECTRIC PERCUSSIVE ORCHESTRA - In::tension (Rossbin 022/EEC) Recorded live at the Roulette Series at Location One in December of 2004. This is Argentina-born and New York-based, Laura Andel's second disc, with her evolving orchestra. The current personnel features Kenta Nagai, Joel Harrison & Khabu Young on guitars, Carl Maguire & Ursel Schlicht on pianos & accordion, Kyoko Kitamura on vocals & electronics, Taylor Ho Bynum on trumpet, David Simons on theremin, and Andrew Drury & Harvey Wirht on drums & percussion, with Laura Andel as the composer, director and conductor. 'In::tension' is an intriguing and rather foreboding work. Eerie morse-code like percussion, mysterious processed vocals, layers of odd electric guitar sounds and two pianos submerged in the waves of turbulent waters. Laura's composing/conducting reminds me of the way Butch Morris extracts fascinating textures and combinations of sounds from his players. Each part of this seven -section work, deals with different densities and combinations of sounds and players. On, "Resonancias", we hear a somber, minimal piece for voice, accordion, guitar and percussion, slowly building in intensity and quietly enchanting. Laura does a fine job and controlling the subtleties and balance, as different instruments float amongst the ghost-like spirits that wander through the entire work. Even the more dark and dense sections, seem to retain a balance that never allows things to go too far into the more troubled waters. A somewhat disturbing work that remains gripping throughout, nonetheless. - BLG

ZU/MATS GUSTAFSSON - How To Raise An Ox (Atavistic 168; USA) It's surprising that it took this long for Zu to release an album with Mats Gustafsson! It's such an obvious and failsafe combination. And since this is (by my count) the 8th Zu album, coming on the heels of three releases featuring Gustafsson associates Ken Vandermark and/or Fred Lonberg-Holm, it's as though they've been beating around the bush! This group has a lot in common with Gustafsson's current flagship unit The Thing; he mostly sticks to baritone sax power blasting and doesn't delve into overtly sentimental or quiet territory (for that be sure to get his monumental solo album Catapult from earlier this year, but also check out the mysterious and slow irregularities of "Beasts Only Die to be Born" on this program). At the same time, Zu have a knack for creating brooding tension with soft and sparse passages, and this disc is not just a constant assault, besides the basic fact that Gustafsson's power blasting typically has a sense of space and rhythmic clarity even at its most aggressive. With Gustafsson's baritone in harsh blowing tandem with Luca Mai's baritone, Zu's dirgy side emerges more than their funky side, but what really makes Zu so special is the way they deconstruct power funk grooves into slow, bleeding studies in the timbral underbelly of electric bass guitar, drumkit, and saxophone. They are the Melvins of funk. Massimo Pupillo has no peers when it comes to making an electric bass guitar sound like a wild hairy beast from the Paleolithic era; his genius is frightening. Pupillo is in astonishing form as usual here, and on "Palace of Reptiles" the group even achieves something close to the sublime rhythmic tension and nuance of his mind-blowing trio disc with Lukas Ligeti and Gianni Gebbia released earlier this year. Despite its surface of aggression and Last Exit styled bravado, this music is not about simple visceral thrills, not even the ones Zu have often provided in the past; Zu and Gustafsson have discovered a profound realm of phrasal abstraction and timbral nuance by slowing the music down to an abject crawl where the ugliest sound can become an oasis of motion. Listen to this like a Scelsi album and not a free jazz album and you'll be deeply rewarded. -Michael Anton Parker

ELLIOTT SHARP - Dispersion Of Seeds for String Quartet & Computer (Zoar Portal Series ZPO-03) "Third in this series of signed and numbered limited editions is "The Dispersion Of Seeds", a work for string quartet by Elliott Sharp performed by the Sirius String Quartet (Meg Okura, Gregor Huebner - violins, Ron Lawrence - viola, David Eggar - cello). Composed in March 2003, "The Dispersion Of Seeds" takes its title from the recently-discovered natural history work by Henry David Thoreau dealing with the mechanism of reforestation and the propagation of plant tree species, a ripe metaphor for the possibility of positive memes thriving and spreading in a time of crass stupidity, fear and militarism. In this recording, the 16-minute score as performed by the quartet is first presented in an acoustic version and then in two versions each representing different software processing strategies. The three versions may be listened to separately or serially as a longer piece."
The acoustic version is striking in its own way. The strings here buzz and drone ominously, seesawing back and forth, lost in their own waves. There is a nervous tension that continues to increase as the piece builds. The bent strings erupting and bristling until a spacious plateau is reached and the quartet hovers in the distance. The piece again builds more slowly, yet it is just as intense, the inner fury shaking with power, about to explode, but not quite. The second version adds an eerie electronic alteration, as if the strings were bathed in some thick liquid and resonated in some strange way. The strings sound almost like horns or ghosts howling or moaning together. The buzzing, wheezing strings become even more intense and create a cosmic drone that can transport us to some alien landscape. The third and final version is even further out, with layers of manipulations colliding with the twisted strings. Too much! This is the type of signature sound that sets Elliott Sharp apart from many of the more restrained composers who often get too much credit by not pushing things too far and playing it safe. Way out there with composers like Xenakis for some of scariest sounds imaginable. - BLG

CARL MAGUIRE - Floriculture (Between the Lines 71209/Germany) Featuring Chris Mannigan on alto sax, Carl Maguire on piano & compositions, Trevor Dunn on bass and Dan Weiss on drums. Carl Maguire is one of the best pianists and composers to emerge from the downtown network over the past few years. I especially like this quartet and had the good fortune to hear them here at DMG on a Friday night last year, when another gig they were supposed to do got canceled at the last minute. Another rising star is alto saxist Chris Mannigan, who often shops at DMG, has played here on other occasions and I look forward to our discussions of Europe's more crafty musicians. Surely you know bass great Trevor Dunn who plays with just about everyone from Zorn to the Fantomas and leads his own trio as well. I don't know too much about Dan Weiss, but he too has been popping up all over the downtown scene,
'Floriculture' was recorded in August of 2002 and was held back a bit while Between the Lines got their new distribution deal in the US. 'Egocentric' opens with an impressive sort-of M-Base like gnarly repeating groove. Carl repeats the line with his left hand as he and Chris interweave their lines with Carl's right hand. What is special about this is the way Carl often splits his hands into different lines, so he can interact with one player as he establishes other intricate subtexts. This often keeps the other musicians on their toes as there are always a few different intersecting lines happening simultaneously. On "Denizen Green", they begin with free and spacious suspense, as Carl works inside the piano, Chris quietly twists his notes inside out, Trevor bows ominously and Dan creates some mysterious tension. They slowly ascend into a mesmerizing groove with some fine mallet work from Dan, as a sublime and immensely dreamy piece unfolds. "Jilly" is an exquisite and haunting piece with Chris playing at his most Jimmy Giuffre-like and Carl playing equally restrained. I dig the way "Chamber Social" has a few different themes happening at the same time, different tempos stacked upon one another. "Subsurface" is superbly laid out piece with some impressive hands-on-drums work, magically harmonic note-popping from Trevor's contrabass, oddly angular, hand-muted piano from Carl and hushed sax from Chris. Carl's strong writing and playing make the most from this entire quartet, whose sound spirited and consistently creative throughout. Excellent work from some of my favorite local heroes. - BLG

KATO HIDEKI - Green Zone (Doubt 106/Japan) Featuring Kato Hideki on bass & violin, Otomo Yoshihide on electric guitar and Uemura Masahiro on drums. Electric bass great, Kato Hideki, was an original member of Ground Zero with Otomo, when they were a more-noisy, post-punk improv group. Since moving here more in 1992, Kato has played a variety of different stringed things, as well as bass and constantly reinvents his approach with each project. So far, he has a solo bass disc, a great Bass Army disc, two incredible discs on Tzadik with Fred Frith and Ikue Mori (called Death Ambient) and more recently a duo disc with James Fei on electronics. So one never knows what direction Kato will go next. Otomo Yoshihide also covers a great deal of different stylistic ground, playing guitar or turntable or sampler or any combination of the three. 'Green Zone' was inspired by the tragedy of 9/11 and its aftermath, the music like a documentary film without pictures. This is one of the most harrowing power trio offerings I've heard in quite some time. Kato's ominous and thick bass throbs at the center of the cyclone, as the rest of the trio slowly erupt like a volcano. What's interesting is that we rarely get to hear Otomo wail on guitar like he does here. The only recent discs of similar venom are those two 'Soup' disc with Bill Laswell. This is one massive, powerful and dynamic trio, you know they mean business. Very cool to hear Otomo playing some great wah-wah, making his guitar talk and scream. The trio rock hard, are super-tight and pound up a storm. Kato's massive electric bass is often at the center of the storm and sound both majestic and mighty. He gets into a great funky groove on "Crave", as Otomo tortures his strings, letting the spirits howl like ghosts in pain. This music is most impressive, in-your-face and way over-the-top! For those of us still brave enough to sit inside the eye of the hurricane. - BLG

MARK WHITECAGE & THE BI-COASTAL ORCHESTRA - BushWacked: A Spoken Opera (Acoustics 416) 'BushWacked' is an impressive, bold and timely work from alto sax wiz, Mark Whitecage, and his new crew. It features Rozanne Levine & Mr. Whitecage on alto sax, clarinet & voices, Scott Steele on guitar, Bill Larimer on keyboards & voice and Robert Mahaffay on drums. The title piece of this disc is not included here but was written in 1990 with lyrics by Jeanne Lee and recorded on her 'Natural Affinities' disc. It was played live by the Nu Band in January of 2005 and sung by Roy Campbell on their tour that month, while Mark spoke his mind about the lies told by our fascist president, Mr. Bush. Mark and his partner Rozanne Levine, collaborated with their friends from Portland, Oregon, the Bi-Coastal Orchestra and that's how this disc came to be. Whitecage collected 17 pages of evidence against Bush Crime Family and their cowardly draft-dodging associates. The spoken words are taken from these texts and remind us of the sad state of affairs that this country has gradually slid into. The music swirls freely around the words, which provide a powerful balm, while we consider the consequences of the current administration. Three of the seven pieces are pretty long, so we get to hear the players stretch out with some fine soloing from the saxes, keyboards and guitar.
Still, it is the words that really stand out and make one think of the mess we have gotten into and the way the rest of the world must view us.
The day I received this disc in the mail, I saw a headline in a newspaper that said the very same thing, "Bush-Wacked"! Perhaps there might just be some justice left for Bush, Cheney, Condy and the rest of their pathetic clan. Only time will tell. No doubt that some asshole out there will complain about the political content of this music review & newsletter platform. Don't bother, because I couldn't give a flying...this is a free country, isn't it?!? - BLG

GREG GOODMAN/GARTH POWELL/GEORGE CREMASCHI - Woody Woodman's Circus of Construction Acts 1-14 (The Beak Doctor 8) Featuring Greg Goodman on unprepared piano, Garth Powell on percussion & bent saw and George Cremaschi on contrabass with chopsticks. Greg Goodman, the amazing avant/jazz pianist from Berkeley, California, started the legendary Beak Doctor label in the late seventies and released six extraordinary albums: his own solo piano disc (out-of-print), a duo with Evan Parker & Goodman and an solo sax effort from Mr. Parker (both soon to be reissued on one CD!), a trio disc with Henry Kaiser, Jon Rose & Goodman (O.o.P.), two albums of important live improvisations with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Kondo, Kaiser & Goodman (now one CD) plus a more recent trio (1999) CD with Goodman, Mats Gustafsson & George Cremaschi. Which brings us to this new trio effort...
'Woody Woodman's Circus of Construction' was recorded in a studio in February of 2003 and it is a strange sort-of concept disc, graced by an unusual b&w cover illustration of two amazon women skiing in the raw with some flying knives above them. After a ridiculously silly, short, spoken word intro, we are off... The notes in the booklet are rather cryptic, like Jorge Luis Borges' imaginary library of the universe. The music takes off for the stratosphere quickly with some incredible free-flowing waves of sounds. This is one incredible trio, that play so well together, intricately weaving layers of lines. Greg does sound as if he is muting the piano with his hand or some object, although it is stated otherwise on the CD. There are a number of short sections with the chopping of wood and a screaming crowd interspersed. All three of these players often approach their instruments rhythmically, creating some wonderful ritualistic beating on certain sections. There are also some spacious, lyrical moments as well, giving the entire endeavor an organic flow. I love the perfectly balanced production, which adds just the right amount of warmth to some of the focused chaos. Certainly, this gem is one the best free piano trio offerings I've heard in a while. - BLG

NOW ORCHESTRA & MARILYN CRISPELL - Pola (Victo 097/Canada) This version of the Vancouver-based Now Orchestra features Coat Cooke (also conductor), Bruce Freedman, Graham Ord & Saul Berson on reeds; John Korsrud & Kevin Elaschuk on tumpets; Rod Murray & Brad Muirhead on trombones; Ron Samworth on guitar, Paul Blaney & Clyde Reed on basses, Dylan van der Schyff on drums, Kate Hammett-Vaughn on voice and special guest Marilyn Crispell on piano. I am a big fan of the Now Orchestra, each of their discs is wonderful in its own way. They have collaborated with musical giants like Barry Guy, George Lewis and Rene Lussier, in the past and here they work with pianist extraordinaire, Marilyn Crispell. Artistic director, Coat Cooke, composed four of the pieces here, with one by Ms. Crispell and one by Ron Samworth. The title track opens, is quite short, but no less impressive. The first impressive trumpet solo flies high over the layers of crashing waves, tight and explosive. Crispell's "Yin Yang" begins with hushed, distant drones and delicate guitar. The piece is long and evolves through sections, as one player solos, the rest of the orchestra swirls in tight waves around the soloist. Ms. Crispell takes a short yet powerful solo along the way, but the orchestra calms down again to a haunting final section. In some ways, this is similar to the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, which was directed by Barry Guy. Intense and focused, with layers of connected waves erupting and the bass(es) at the center of the storm. Samworth's "M.C." has an amazing duo of piano and sax, throwing powerful lines of notes back and forth. Later on there is a most impressive section of intricate interconnecting sections, that will take your breath away! Each piece employs different strategies and structures and is fascinating and often intense throughout. - BLG

RAN BLAKE/DAVID FABRIS - Indian Winter (Soul Note 121327/Italy) This is a most impressive duo offering featuring the legendary Ran Blake on piano and David "Knife" Fabris on electric guitar. Ran Blake has been and remains one of the most adventurous, unique and enigmatic of all modern "jazz" pianists since his recording career began in the early sixties, with that great duo album with Jeanne Lee. Ran thinks cinematically and his approach to the piano has always been quite unique. The majority of his recordings have been solo, duo or trio discs, he seems to favor this format. On this new effort, he covers a wide range of eclectic songs from Ornette, Frank Zappa, Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles as well as a handful of original tunes by Mr. Blake. David Fabris is a former student of Ran's from the New England Conservatory and is currently living here in NYC. This CD was recorded in November of 1999, at the end of a European tour, but not released until now. Ran has played with guitarists in the past on very rare occasion, so this is indeed something new. Ran has a lovely touch, and brings the beauty of the melody in Lionel Hampton's "Duality" up to the front. The theme song from "Streetcar Named Desire" features David on some inspired fuzztone guitar, an odd choice with acoustic piano, yet it works well, as David switches to the jazz tone on the rest of the song. Ran plays an exquisite version of Stevie Wonders' "You and I", so dreamy and elegant. Ran's own "Tribute to Alfred Hitchcock" is an eerie, haunting tribute with a few different stark themes explored at the same time, frantic in part and spacious in other parts. On a number of these songs, the duo takes the skeletal approach, using suspense and space to let those melodies linger in the air. There some 23 songs found on this gem, all but one are under five minutes, so we get a healthy dose of little treasures. One of the highlights here is Zappa's "Marqueson's Chicken", which gets a fabulous reading for solo guitar with David switching tones from section to section. What I like about this entire disc is that it is consistently adventurous and unpredictable without ever having to resort to any grandstanding. - BLG

LINDSEY HORNER - don't count on glory (Cadence Jazz 1188) Featuring a large cast of characters including Lindsey on bass, bari sax & bass clarinet, Marty Ehrlich on alto sax, Uri Caine & Neal Kirkwood on pianos, Pete McCann on guitars, Bobby Previte, Jeff Berman and Allison Miller on drums. This is downtown bass great Lindsey Horner's fifth record as a leader, although it has been a while since the last one. Lindsey moved to Europe and then to Pittsburgh, before returned back here. The last two discs I that I can recall that he is on more recently are those two great Jewels & Binoculars CDs, an amazing Bob Dylan tribute trio with Michael Moore & Michael Vatcher. Lindsey uses a 7 or 8 piece band on all but one piece of this disc. 'don't count on glory' is filled with sumptuous melodies and superbly played songs. "Last Look Home" is an especially lovely song, with a warm groove and inspired solos from Neal Kirkwood (piano) and Pete McCann (guitar), although Allison Miller's drums are also great. The title track is another memorable one that blends that Blue Note swing with a great marching beat. Trumpeter, Brian Lynch, takes a dynamic solo, as does Uri Caine on electric piano and Marty Ehrlich on alto sax. It is Lindsey's wonderful bass playing that holds these pieces together and provide that central groove and bottom throughout. Perhaps this gem is more melodic, more straight-ahead than much of what we usually stock and review, but I still find it an excellent treat and a beautiful offering, perfect for when you might get tired of all those screaming horns. One cut, "Gyp the Blood", features an entire group from Pittsburgh, with just Lindsey and Jeff Berman added. This piece has a dark, Miles-like sort of vibe with layers of saxes and percussion and shows that there is pockets of great musicians found throughout the hinterlands of the US. On a few of these pieces, Lindsey uses two pianists, Uri Caine on electric and Neal Kirkwood on acoustic piano, and these sound great together, sometimes soloing or even providing the right colors. Even fusion guitar great Pete McCann gets a chance to stretch out on the final piece and play an intense solo. What more could we want? - BLG

ANDREAS WILLERS - Montauk (Between the Lines 71208/Germany) Featuring Andreas Willers on acoustic & electric guitars & banjo, Dominique Pifarely on violin, Alain Grange on cello and Michael Griener on drums & percussion. Berlin-based guitarist, Andreas Willers, has a number of great discs out on labels like FMP, Nabel, Sound Aspects and Enja. This is his third disc for Between the Lines. He approaches each project with a different idea and different personnel. Violinist, Dominique Pifarely, we know from his work with Louis Sclavis. This is a unique quartet, sort of a string quartet with a percussionist. Greiner often plays nimble hand percussion, while both strings play those complex charts and Andreas balances between the two on both acoustic and electric. Dominique reminds me of Mark Feldman, in that he is irrepressible, he is constantly coming up with sparks, nifty solos and note twisting ideas. The nine-part "Montauk Suite" is filled with some impressively composed and intricately well-played parts. "One man's Floor is Another Man's Ceiling" balances between intense solo sections and focused free sections. There is a section where Andreas piles up layers of complex guitar parts and another section where he plays some a variety on intricate parts simultaneously. I am reminded of guitarist and composer, James Emery, who also records for this same label and also writes similar difficult pieces for his different groups. "String Trio" has the violin, cello and acoustic guitar playing and bending their notes together and apart, used to a stunning effect. This is another winning combination provided by the selective folks at Between the Lines. - BLG

DOMINIC FRASCA - Deviations (Cantaloupe 21032) Named GUITAR HERO OF 2005 by Guitar Player Magazine, with an upcoming feature in the magazine this November, Dominic Frasca is blasting open the guitar world with his outrageous virtuosity. His recent breakthrough Nonesuch recording of Steve Reich's Electric Guitar Phase brought him to the public ear. Now with his first solo disc, Frasca redefines the technique and brings the guitar into an entirely new universe.
'Deviations' finds Frasca playing on multiple string guitars that he created - at times building specific instruments for one track. Sounding like an orchestra of sonic guitars, his complex, intricate, and beautiful music is made completely live with Frasca's multitasking mastery. (You won't believe that there are no overdubs!) As he taps, picks, and pulls the strings, hitting blocks of wood against the guitar body Frasca never ceases to reinvent the instrument. Early demo CDs caught the attention of leading critics with WNYC naming Deviations one of the best CDs of the year. Frasca will be on the top of everyones 'must see/must hear' lists by the end of the 2005!

MIKE PRIDE With TONY MALABY/WILLIAM PARKER/CHARLIE LOOKER - Scrambler (Not Two 766; EEC) SPECIAL PRICE [usually $17]! Mike Pride is the kind of musician that makes the current NYC improv underground so vital. He's always challenging himself with new situations and breaking down barriers between different scenes, intermingling avant-rock, avant-jazz, free improv, and miscellaneous wackiness in a countless stream of projects. This disc is a perfect example of his expansive community spirit, bringing together two great avant-jazzers from different circles of activity, not to mention a young guitarist known mostly for his work in the fabulously idiosyncratic post-hardcore art pop band Time of Orchids. Charlie Looker's guitar playing on this disc has many of the same qualities I enjoy in his ToO work, a simple, pin-prick spikiness and clarity of line without soloistic cliches, though he does play some ordinary jazz lines a few times here too. Looker also does some subtle coloristic background playing that lets the pungent, edgy timbres of electric guitar seep into the mix and amplify the poignancy of Malaby's bittersweet saxophone melodies, especially in the achingly beautiful "A Prayer For Peace". Malaby dominates the music, and the fluid balance between post-Berne, post-Ornette, and post-Ayler concepts he achieves in this 100% free session reveals musical depths independent of the score-based avant-jazz he tends to mine. I've never been disappointed by the many concerts and recordings I've heard from Malaby; I think he's one of the most consistently inspired jazz saxophonists of his generation. With his knockout playing on this album, Mike Pride puts himself on the map as a free jazz drumkitter, even though he's a veteran of publicly documented groups led by the likes of Anthony Braxton and Brandon Evans. With his foundations in aggressive rock music, he doesn't hesitate to explore furious high-energy territory, but he's just as adept at groove deconstructionism a la Jim Black. Despite the eclectic backgrounds of the musicians, this music is not eclectic at all; it's a totally focused free jazz session that never steps outside of the classic universal music zone, riding the ebb and flow of melody and pulse as an organic unit with shared intentions. Every combination of unique musical personalities offers the potential for unique and great free jazz if they come together with confidence and sensitivity. Here are four musicians who do precisely that, catalyzed by William Parker's locomotive throbs and searing arco. Free jazz is a bottomless well of human spirit and these 2002 recordings issued in an elegant gatefold by the Polish label Not Two is an outpouring well worth lapping up. -Michael Anton Parker

BASTRO [DAVID GRUBBS/BUNDY K BROWN/JOHN McENTIRE] - Antlers: Live 1991 (Blue Chopsticks 14; USA) "Magnificent archival material of 1991 live performances by the legendary instrumental power trio and Gastr Del Sol precursor Bastro (David Grubbs - guitar; Bundy K. Brown - bass guitar; John McEntire - drumkit). Highlights from four concerts in Chicago and Germany, as well as two Quicktime videos from Germany and Holland. The recording quality is raw, but the CD is well mastered and the music is so raw and powerful, not to mention historically important, that such matters are fairly irrelevant. These are watershed moments for the creative, intricate, stripped-down post-punk music that became known as math rock. It's easy to hear how Bastro and other bands from the same milieu like Squirrel Bait, Breadwinner, Slint, etc made aesthetic breakthroughs and set precedents for some of the great 90s bands that dealt with the heaviness and specific timbres of the punk/hardcore continuum in a poetic and emotionally nuanced way, like Rodan, A Minor Forest, Don Caballero, Kleg, Tone, Colossamite, etc. In these rare recordings we also find the math rock kernel of some Gastr Del Sol songs, in which Bastro's aggressive and jagged style would be radically recontextualized in delicate, unbounded song forms. These recordings transcend their historical interest and stand up to repeated listens as a killer live album; I've already relished four spins through the disc and I'm looking forward to more. The melodies are simple, compelling, and carried by edgy, sublime clean guitar tones; repeated soft motifs build to white hot climaxes; the band is tight yet bursting with spontaneity and passion. A thrilling slice of history finally revealed." - Michael Anton Parker

TAYLOR HO BYNUM & SPIDERMONKEY STRINGS With JASON HWANG/TOMAS ULRICH/OKKYUNG LEE - Other Stories (Three Suites) (482 Music 1041; USA) Taylor Ho Bynum's great cornet playing is familiar to most free jazz fans by now and widely documented on various releases, but this release is one of his first major statements as a composer. Anyone who's spent the past ten years in intimate association with Anthony Braxton as a student and first-call collaborator is bound to have a quirky angle on the enterprise of academic notationalism. For starters, Bynum follows his mentor's lead in using a very unconventional assemblage of conventional instruments. This disc documents two extended suites by his SpiderMonkey Strings ensemble: Bynum (cornet), Jason Kao Hwang (violin), Jessica Pavone (violin, viola), Stephanie Griffin (viola), Tomas Ulrich (cello), Pete Fitzpatrick (guitar), Joseph Daley (tuba), Luther Gray (drumkit), Jay Hoggard (vibraphone). Also like Braxton, Bynum's writing often splits the ensemble into parallel independent layers, like in "Supo Eno: Part One" where the string section moves in a skew plane away from the bristling free jazz of Bynum's cornet and Gray's drumkit. Strategies from jazz and academic composition are both synthesized and juxtaposed; it's a good example of the continued refinements to the original "third stream" concept. However, with its heavy emphasis on tender and accessible melody, harmony, and groove, this disc suggests that Bynum takes as much inspiration from Ellington as Braxton. His romanticism comes to a head in the lovely suite for string quartet (Hwang and Jean Cook - violins; Griffin - viola; Okkyung Lee - cello), guitar (Fitzpatrick), and cornet (Bynum), and the poignant pre-modernist string movement in "Supo Eno: Part Four". A playful eclectic side comes out in the "SpiderMonkey Stories" suite, with tuba and drumkit grooves in the vein of Henry Threadgill's Very Very Circus, and (in "Chuck") the strings/tuba/guitar blend working some slow, chunky riffage with a striking resemblance to the first album by the popular 90s rock group Rage Against the Machine. Bynum has an impressive cast at his service here, musicians with the chops and aesthetic disposition suited to the music. With their experience together in Dominic Duval's groundbreaking string quartet Hwang and Ulrich are masters of unclassifiable post-tonal improv, and the underappreciated Joseph Daley makes his presence known with an amazing hyper-vibrato tuba solo in "Supo Eno: Part Three". While it sometimes buckles under the weight of its ambitions, this is an intriguing document of new work from a precocious instrumentalist and composer sure to challenge and delight listeners for decades to come. -Michael Anton Parker

ELLEN FULLMAN/KONRAD SPRENGER - Ort (Choose 02; Germany) SPECIAL SALE [normally $18] "In 1981, at her studio in Brooklyn she began developing her life-work, the 70 foot (21 meter) 'Long String Instrument', in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings, producing a chorus of minimal organ-like overtones which has been compared to the experience of standing inside an enormous grand piano. In 2000, Fullman received a grant to live and work in Berlin for one year. A former American colleague from her New York years -- composer Arnold Dreyblatt, already based in Berlin for many years -- introduced Fullman to Jorg Hiller, a/k/a Konrad Sprenger, two generations her junior. Hiller, a composer, producer, DJ, arranger, recording engineer and founder of Choose Records had gravitated from southern Germany to Berlin in 1998. The resulting collaboration might come as a surprise to those who know their respective outputs. At the beginning, Dreyblatt suggested to record an album of songs, harking back to Fullman's own southern heritage and the promise of her early song-work left unfulfilled, mirrored to Hiller's fascination with early American folk traditions inspired by Harry Smith's documentary recordings. Truly an exercise in shifting contexts, Fullman's haunting voice blends eerily with the sonorities of her instrument, which seems to function as a kind of cosmic fiddle. Hiller, as producer, arranger and musician, has created a 'wall of sound' behind Fullman with a potpourri of acoustic instruments, including Dreyblatt's own 'excited strings bass', a zither, violin, electric bass and even tympani along with the Long String Instrument. Ort, the third issue from Choose Records represents a unique blend of musical styles, from hillbilly/country & western to contemporary minimal, with shades of art-rock. With this release the label seems to be pointing to a number of diverse musical directions, opening a vast field of possibilities for the future." -- Arnold Dreyblatt.

CHRISTY DORAN/ERIKA STUCKY/FREDY STUDER/KIM CLARKE - Jimi [Hendrix] (DoubleMoon/Challenge 71048; EEC) Finally! A new Hendrix tribute project by one of the few guitarists who have any business doing a whole program of these landmark compositions, Christy Doran. (Personal disclosure: Doran is, alongside Nels Cline, my all-time favorite guitarist and I've heard at least 90% of his recorded output.) This is a totally different approach to Hendrix than Doran's infamous group with Phil Minton that took the vocal parts to furthest reaches of crazed experimentalism. In fact, Erika Stucky's approach to the vocals is almost the polar opposite of Minton's. She uses an ordinary booming blues rock style here, though with an occasional creative twist, like the wild processed vocal freakouts in "If 6 was 9". These are greasy, straightahead readings that connect more with the basic rock roots of the music, no more or less experimental than Hendrix was himself, which of course was quite experimental. My only complaint about that incredible Hendrix disc Doran released in 1994 was Django Bates' cheesy and unnecessary synth parts (but I also miss the rich horn sound he added in other parts), so I'm relieved to see this one pared down to a basic power trio, where Doran's guitar playing is at center stage. Doran's right hand man, Fredy Studer, is thankfully behind the trap set, and a monster of a bass guitarist, Kim Clarke (a veteran of the long-running group Defunkt, who in fact released their own Hendrix and Muddy Waters tribute album in 1995) gives the rhythm section a fat, muscular, slightly funky sound. If you've ever had the misfortune of hearing Nguyen Le's disgusting tribute album, you'll know the risk of turning Hendrix into easy-listening lite jazz garbage, and even though the arrangements here tend towards a more relaxed and conventional blues/jazz/rock/funk sound than the originals, Doran and company thankfully keep things raw and dirty throughout and the whole thing ultimately hinges on Doran's unmistakable and innovative Hendrix-derived guitar style, sounding much like it does in his own compositions. His mind-blowing spidery squiggles and acid explosions emerge in peak form in a few spots, like in "Voodoo Child", where I'm reminded of 1997's Race The Time, Doran's greatest achievement in the power trio format. A few tunes get reinvented here, notably "Fire" with its busy, fusiony drumkit work and surprising IDM vibe. Christy Doran's whole career is essentially based on a creative, singular synthesis of Hendrix and jazz, so this recording feels as natural as a flower in full bloom on a sunny day or a thunderstorm on a cloudy day. -Michael Anton Parker

BRUCE'S WEEKLY PSYCH/FOLK/ROCK/ROOTS RECOMMENDATIONS:

VASHTI BUNYAN - Lookaftering (Dicristina 006) "It's not often you come across an artist you can genuinely refer to as a 'cult legend,' but Vashti Bunyan is truly that. A full thirty-five years after her only previous album, the singer returns with a new solo work, her first in all these years, and it is a breathtakingly beautiful album. Far from some kind of appendage tacked onto the end of an amazing story and a past classic, Lookaftering is a fully beautiful album in its own right. Produced by fellow Edinburgh resident Max Richter (who has a wonderful solo album of his own, Blue Notebooks), and co-arranged with Bunyan, it's a rich, beautifully arranged and stirring album. Developing gradually and organically -- with work initially taking place between Richter and Bunyan's homes, and then at various studios in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow -- Lookaftering is anchored around Bunyan's voice and picked acoustic guitar, and Richter's piano playing and arranging. Its instrumentation includes a string quartet, oboe, harp, French horn, recorder, flute, hammer dulcimer, glasses, harmonium, and Rhodes piano, and it features contributions from Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Adem, Adam Pierce (Mice Parade), Robert Kirby (Nick Drake), Otto Hauser and Kevin Barker (Espers, Currituck County)."

AYUO - AOI (Tzadik 7260) This is the third fascinating disc from Ayuo for Tzadik and again he gives us some unexpected delights. On, 'AOI', Ayuo deals with (the form of) a Japanese Noh play. He utilizes such strange instrumentation as bouzouki, sitar-guitar, computer, cornemuse, bass, piano, sangen, shakuhachi, synth, darbuka and even more. Our journey begins with, "A Stranger", layers of chanting vocals, sitar, flutes and other Eastern (sampled) sounds. The sound is somewhere between Gong and Acid Mothers Temple with a bit of the Boredoms, hypnotic and quietly cosmic. "AOI No UE" is a 22-minute epic of strange electric guitar manipulations, austere exotic, spoken vocals, spacious and suspenseful, haunting flute and a minimum of ritualistic percussion. "Ulysses and the City of Dreams" has two episodes and is performed by classical pianist, Yuji Takahashi. It is a thoughtful piece for restrained yet pounding note repetition, faster in the first part, slower in the second half. "11:30 on the Morning of March 1st, 2005" is for solo bouzouki and it is like a dervish dance of the spirits set free. "Oh Light of My Heart" brings our cosmic journey to a close with more sitar, wah-wah guitar, synth, ethnic percussion samples and groovy exotic vocals. Please pass that jint, so we can all float downstream. Ommmmm. - BLG

MANY BRIGHT THINGS - Many Bright Friends (Wild Places 15) "The idea of the 'Supersession' album dates back to 1968 with Al Kooper's LP with Michael Bloomfield and Steve Stills. Fast forward thirty-seven years to the new album by Many Bright Things. It opens with the twenty-second title track, followed by the twenty-minute centerpiece: The Paul Butterfield Band's John Coltrane/Ravi Shankar-inspired masterpiece, 'East West.' Across its twenty minutes and forty-four seconds no fewer that FIVE guitarists step into the center ring with solos that begin with Larry Demyer (Windopane) and include back-to-back fiery electric sermons by Nick Saloman (Bevis Frond) and Al Simones. 'The Silver Witch' is written and performed by Alisha Sufit (Magic Carpet) accompanied by Frank DeFina on a beautiful Stephen Gilchrist F-5 mandolin. We think this song opens the second side of the vinyl as nicely as 'Within You Without You' opened side two of Sgt. Pepper. Alisha's voice reminds us of our dreams of angels. A tamboura drone and tabla accompaniment (by Paul Tescher) are the foundation for 'Minor Parade for 18 Strings' and a duet between Stan Denski's acoustic 12-string Guild guitar and Paul Major's lead electric. Stan Denski & Larry Demyer play guitars, David 'Tufty' Clough (Zero Boys) adds bass and Lon Paul (Marmoset) adds percussion, all of which form the ground upon which Jello Biafra (The Dead Kennedys) improvises observations on 'rare psychedelic music' on 'I Am Not a Collector Potato!' We guarantee you've never heard anything quite like this. The CD adds the ambient bonus track 'There Will Be a Slight Delay.'

MY CAT IS AN ALIEN - The Cosmological Eye Trilogy [3 CD set] (Last Visible Dog 072/4) Collects the original volume I&II, the unreleased volume III and an hour and 15 minutes of additional, never-before-heard material. The most organic and certainly cosmic minimalism I've yet to hear. "Refreshing Improv that stems from a tradition of space rock, psychedelic jamming and the lo-fi explorations of groups like The Dead C. The music of the Turin-based Opalio brothers has an untutored, instinctive charm that has been championed in the past by Sonic Youth. These jams...are far looser and dreamier than the work of their mentors. [these] pieces describe patient, slow moving parabolas, rising from amplifier hiss and hum, to more urgent dialogues of percussions and guitar feedback, finally following long arcs into silence." -- The Wire

NEW RECORDINGS FROM THE BVVHAAST LABEL:

FRANK VAN BOMMEL QUINTET - Ore (BVhaast 0704/Netherlands) Featuring Tobias Delius & Michael Moore on saxes & clarinets, Frank Van Bommel on piano & compositions, Arjen Gorter on contrabass and Martin Van Duynhoven on drums. This is Mr. Van Bommel's second great disc for Bvhaast, his first from 1999 was a quartet, he has now added ICP's sax star, Michael Moore to his group. 'Ore' was recorded live at the BIMhuis in Amsterdam in January & February of 2004. Starting with a four-part suite called "Nightingale's Daydream", Van Bommel's sounds wonderful with a long, angular, Monkian piano solo, the rhythm team swinging elastically with him. Tobias Delias (on tenor sax) and Michael Moore (on alto), play a fine duet, which starts unaccompanied, both swaggering beautifully, both comrades from the ICP Orchestra. Tobias' simmering tenor is featured on "Merel", sounding a lot like those warm toned tenors of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Mr. Moore's clarinet also using his most tender of tones, with a lovely, laid back piano solo from Frank. "Alkaest" again starts with a sublime sax duo, both Tobias and Michael have such swell, touching tones. This soon leads to another powerful hard-swinging piano solo from Van Bommel. The title track "Ore", is long and moves through different sections. The first part features some well written parts for spacious piano, clarinet and tenor sax, becoming more free and dreamlike as if unfolds. As the piano plays this hypnotic theme, both saxes swirl superbly like happy spirits. For those of us who need our fix of ICP Orchestra-like wonders, perhaps without some of the zaniness, try this little gem out. - BLG

JOZEF VAN WISSEM - Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear: Solo Lute Palindromes, Airfield Recordings And Electronics (BVhaast 0905; Netherlands) The lute is an ancient classical instrument, which was popular in the 1600's. Mr. Van Wissem has brought the lute into the 21st century by composing mirror image compositions for the lute and adding electronics. He then transfers them into palindromes, structures which sound the same played forwards or backwards. Due to difficulties trying to fly to New York last year, Jozef recorded the sounds of the airport and used these sounds with his lute pieces. This adds an odd quality of displacement, like being stranded in an airport in between flights. Each piece seems to tell a little story or at least set the scene. Images of riding on horseback, the trees swaying slowly in the cool Fall breeze, sometimes just the impatient vibe of pacing back and forth at the airport waiting. There is contemplative and often hypnotic quality within much of this, as certain phrases are repeated over and over and slowly evolve into other thoughtful worlds. A few of these pieces are quite minimal, letting just a few notes hang in the air, as the airport sounds drift through the suspense. On "Stichomythy", classical percussionist Arnold Marinissen adds a bit of somber exotic percussion to the galloping groove. Nice touch. - BLG

ROGER DOYLE - Charlotte Corday And The Lament Of Louis XVI/The Passades, Vol I [His Master's Noise Vol 2] (BVHaast 0304; Netherlands) Roger Doyle - electronics, Olwen Fouere, Paavo Evans-Doyle, Kathy Kennedy, Paul Dutton, Roger Doyle - voices
A "passade" is a term meaning "to move backwards and forwards over the same space". Electronic music composer, Roger Doyle, extracted raw material (4 seconds at a time) from previous compositions of his own making and spent nearly 3 years manipulating the extracts. The original material came from the voices of Paul Dutton (CCMC), Olwen Fouere and Mary Doyle, plus one voice & text from Kevin O'Connell. The sounds themselves are strange, bristling, quickly manipulated static and ghost-like eerie sounds. There are constantly shifting snips of vocal sounds that float, flicker and jump from quiet to more violent moments. Mr. Doyle works well with selecting and fine-tuning a variety of textures and electronic sounds. Most things move slowly, so we can hear the sounds as they evolve and mutate. I find most of this to be quite fascinating, often musical and not too alien to be a mere novelty. It breathes and evolves in a very organic way, the occasional snips of recognizable voices give it an enchanting nearly human quality. A superior and engaging endeavor that never becomes too much. - BLG

COMBUSTION CHAMBER - Interconnector (BVHaast 0804/Netherlands) Brass-heavy 12-piece ensemble conducted by Rutger Van Leyden, featuring compositions by Steve Martland, Renske Vrolojk, Frank Crijns, John de Simone, Toek Numan and John Korsrud. Martland's "Horses of Instruction" was originally commissioned by the Bang-On-A-Can All-Stars and it is one of those tight, interlocking works, sort of Philip Glass-like, filled with nervous energy and totally engrossing. Mr. Vrolijk' "gROUND" is another dynamic work with layers of lines of horns and an electric guitar over a marching beat. Frank Crijns' (from the prog band Blast) "Propulsion" is more stark, yet tight and staggered and dense in parts. It reminds me of Henry Cow's 'Unrest' album. John De Simone's "Hero Fantasy" is filled with layers of bent and agitated horns, twisted electric guitar, quite intense and a bit disturbing. "Dreams of the Caterpillar" by Toek Numan is another restless work, which is constantly shifting between different Zappa-like intricate sections. John Korsrud is the only other composer here (besides Martland) with whom I am previously familiar, as he has a recent disc on Spool. Korsrud's "Cruel Yet Fair" is an homage to Louis Andriessen and it has thick, layers of swirling lines, and smoking solos from the trumpet and electric guitar. This is a particularly strong disc of well chosen works, that sounds as if there were one composer and not six different composers. - BLG

HISTORIC RECORDINGS, REISSUES and RESTOCK DISCS:

THE 'ART YARD' SERIES OF RARE SUN RA - ON LP ONLY! - CONTINUES WITH..

SUN RA - On Jupiter [ LP only release] (Art Yard 004) "On Jupiter is near ideal as an introduction to the musical worlds of Sun Ra. It has a magical mix of colours from Sun Ra's varied palette. Beneath its compelling surface lie many layers of musical detail, and numerous hints as to where Sun Ra was coming from and where he was heading. It combines real depth with beauty and hits you the first time you hear it. On Jupiter represents Sun Ra's closest encounter with the world of disco. In the late 1970s he made other albums that also gesture in this direction -- Lanquidity has a jazz-rock feel while remaining firmly part of the Ra omniverse, this is true too of Disco 3000 despite its title. On Jupiter really has only one track which fits the 'disco' tag -- 'UFO' -- but this piece is such a strong statement that it becomes the centre of gravity of the album. The title track, 'On Jupiter,' features Marshall Allen's oboe and Sun Ra's piano, along with guitars and bass and multi-layered percussion. This is the first appearance on record of this piece, afterwards to remain a frequently performed item in the Arkestra's book. Sun Ra would reportedly rehearse his band to the point of exhaustion, but in the studio his was usually a one-take approach, close to a concert performance. This did not necessarily mean that every album appeared in the form it was recorded. On Jupiter, like Lanquidity (but unlike Disco 3000, essentially a live recording) owes a lot of its final sound to post-production. The album was mixed by Michael Ray, who layered in prerecorded material with that produced in the studio -- Sun Ra sent Ray back to the Arkestra base during the mixing session, and Ray returned with 'a handful of tapes.' Close listening would suggest that some of the guitar and percussion and possibly some vocals were added in this way." -- Chris Trent.

MAXIMUM JOY - Unlimited: 1979-1983 (Crippled Dick 101; Germany) A compilation of rare and hard-to-find 7", 12" and some album tracks from Bristol's Maximum Joy. Formed in 1979, Maximum Joy was originated by Janine Rainforth (singer/violin/clarinet) and Tony Wrafter (saxophonist/trumpeter, previously of another Bristol band, Glaxo Babies). In the wake of the infamous Pop Group and influenced by the hot bed of musical influences driving the Bristol scene at the time: punk, reggae, funk, soul and jazz - the band developed their own unique version of the post-punk Bristol sound. Sometimes soothing, occasionally challenging, their groove combined funk, punk, soulful jazz and wild improv with daring and panache. Other founding members were Charlie Llewellyn, John Waddington and Dan Catsis, all previous members of the bands Pop Group and Glaxo Babies. Fuelled by Thatcherism, inner city race riots and growing protest amongst young and old, Maximum Joy's songs and melodies were about being conscious and staying positive. They were quickly signed by Y records, and distributed by Rough Trade. Maximum Joy's first single, "Stretch" came out in 1981. The song became a big underground seller in Europe, Japan and the States, and made it into the NME indie charts, becoming an underground post-punk/funk classic in the fashionable night clubs of New York when the disco re-mix was released on New York's 99 Records. The band's next single, "White and Green Place" was a funky, fun number but underneath was reflected the shallowness perceived in modern living of the day. The slick production was orchestrated by maestro Dick O'Dell, string quartet and all. Kev (Ebo) Evans joined as bassist and the band went on to record the jazzy, ethereal "All in the Air," illustrating the intangible yet all-permeating effect of feelings, inspiration and sound. Then in 1982, the band brought out their LP, Station MXJY, featuring spacey interludes and reggae-influenced ballads, which was overseen by producer extraordinaire, Adrian Sherwood. Later that year they recruited Nelly Hooper to add to the line up, (formerly of Mouth, the Wild Bunch and Soul II Soul) who contributed the unique, early '80s disco sound of the syn drum. Trumpeter Jeremy Hirsh also joined the band at this time. Maximum Joy's last single was a haunting version of a Timmy Thomas classic "Why Can't We Live Together," on the flip side of which was "Man Of Tribes," another song about how capitalism can lead to heartache. Produced by prolific musician Dennis Bovell, he dug the B-side song so much that he joined Janine on the choruses and contributed to making it one of Maximum Joy's best recorded tracks. John Peel was a fan, and they recorded a couple of BBC Radio 1 sessions for him while they fast became a European staple.

PHILIP JECK - Stoke (Touch 56; UK) Jeck's third release for Touch, after Loopholes and Surf. Stoke was made using Bush, Fidelity and Philips record players, a Casio keyboard and an Alba portable CD player. This record mainly consists of edits of live performances from England, Japan and Vienna. The notion of turntablism may be associated with flashy, deck-hopping scratch gymnastics, but the use of the record player as an instrument harks back to a less ostentatious tradition of music making. John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Schaeffer, and James Tenney recognized records and turntable mechanisms as malleable sound sources. In essence, sampling began with the real-time deployment of gramophones in performance by these artists and academics. Philip Jeck, like peers Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, and Martin Tetreault, legitimizes the turntable as a musical instrument.

REPRESSED CLASSIC ARTROCK FROM THE 'SPALAX' LABEL...

AMON DUUL - Psychedelic Underground (Spalax 14947; France) Reissue of this all-time classic album from 1969, from the original Amon Duul (before they split into I -just known as Amon Duul - and Amon Duul II). Duul's debut album is a fulfillment of the commune's ideals, with experimental arrangements and often chaotic structures. Amon Duul became a primary symbol of the German Underground before splitting up in 1971. Utilizing electric & 12-string guitars, maracas, congas, bass & vocals this was commune-music's ultimate moment. Completely distorted, all-in-the-red recording techniques, perfectly delineated drug -haze, all-for-one mantra song structures and pure freak-out mania all over the place. Imagine the German side of the coin of an extended Jefferson Airplane jam!

CLUSTER [DIETER MOEBIUS/HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS/KLUSTER] - Zuckerzeit (Spalax 14865; France) The 2nd Cluster album for Brain didn't come out until 1978, as a reunion of sorts for Roedelius & Moebius after a few years of working with M. Rother as Harmonia. The synthetics are less primitive and more serenely crafted, but this is still a fine insight into the later pulse-ticking mechanics of the scene.

GURU GURU - Hinten (Spalax 14295; France) Outrageous 2nd album - 1971 - from Germany's art-rock-psyche/prog band. Super intense, power trio, space rockin' insanity. Featuring Ax Genrich on lead guitar, Uli Trepte on electric bass & radio and Mani Neumeier on drums, assorted percussion, voice and zonk machine(?). As the throbbing electric bass and pounding drums get down, Ax wails and sails on his grand, burning space/rock guitar. There are great moments of free/space as the mumbled voices, enchanting acoustic guitar and ritualistic drums levitate together. It sounds as if they are progressing from where Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun" left off and where the Dead's better space jams took off. A perfect soundtrack for inner and outer space tripping. - BLG

GURU GURU - UFO (Spalax 14296; France) Classic 1st album from this leading proponent of Germany's psychedelic/art-rock underground! Guru Guru's debut album shows why the band, even if it never reached the levels of appreciation and influence the likes of Can or Neu! did, still maintained a healthy reputation over the moons for its early work. Opening number "Stone In" has a quite appropriate title for a starting track -- it is wonderfully tripped out, to be sure, and if Manuel Gottsching was more of a guitar god, Genrich kicks up a lot of frazzled noise. The principle of the Trepte/Neumeier rhythm section seems to have been "find loud weird grooves and then play them, sometimes chaotically." Again, they aren't Can's wickedly effective combination of Holger Czukay and Jaki Leibezeit, but they're not just falling over themselves either. The title track is the most memorable song, almost entirely eschewing conventional rhythm for an inward collapse of feedback and noise that sounds either like the Stooges' "LA Blues" even more strung out or early Main with a conventional band lineup. "Girl Call" and "Next Time See You at the Dalai" (a classic example of a just-groansome enough Krautrock pun that only Germans seemed to love) makes for a good combination, the increasing freakiness of the one leading into the start-stop chug and explosion of the latter. Genrich really gets to show off a bit on both, demonstrating that there is such a thing as technical ability that doesn't equal pointless fret abuse. "Der LSD-Marsch" is actually the most conventional of the tracks -- while a good-enough slow burn up to a freakout (mostly provided by Neumeier's drum solo), it's too short to be truly epic and not otherwise distinguishable from many similar songs by the likes of Amon Duul II, say. For all that, though, it ends this enjoyable effort well enough. - Ned Raggett, AMG

ASH RA TEMPEL [KLAUS SCHULZE/MANUEL GOTTSCHING] - Ash Ra Tempel (Spalax 14244; France) The reissue of historic, early albums of Germany's legendary space/psych outfit is a legitimately great thing, and the network of people who continue to discover this stuff seems to expand daily with no let up. The first, self-titled, Ash Ra Tempel album, from 1971, is a flat-out massive overdriven psych monster. Formed by Klaus Schulze (on drums & electronics, after having left Tangerine Dream), guitarist Manuel Gottsching (who would remain the one constant with Ash Ra), and Hartmut Enke (bass), this is the most intense recording in their discography & an absolute must if you're interested in the early glories of Krautrock bliss.

JUDEE SILL - Judee Sill (Water 158) For her self-titled debut, Sill gathered a production team that included Jim Pons and John Beck of The Leaves, as well as engineer/producer Henry Lewy, known for his work with Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Leonard Cohen. Her guitar playing provides the foundation for most of the songs, joined by various combinations of pedal steel, strings, and brass. "Jesus Was A Cross Maker," built on a bed of Sill's gospel-flavored piano, was produced by Graham Nash and crafted as a single. Rich with cosmic imagery and ambiguously spiritual lyrics, the songs on Judee Sill often blur the line between the earthly and the divine.

JUDEE SILL - Heart Food (Water 159) Judee Sill was a true original. A singer-songwriter with a wealth of influences and a fascination with religion, she referred to her work as "country-cult-baroque." She was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum label, and, along with Joni Mitchell and Carole King, exemplified the breezy "Laurel Canyon Sound" of the early '70s. Sill scored moderate hits with "Lady-O" (originally written for The Turtles) and "Jesus Was A Cross Maker" and released two albums -- 1971's Judee Sill and 1973's Heart Food -- before suffering chronic pain and eventually dying of a drug overdose at age 35. Sill grew up in Oakland, California, and began playing piano at age three. A troubled family life and brushes with the law landed her in reform school, where, as church organist, she developed the gospel style that would characterize her future recordings. After a stint in college and three down-and-out years of addiction, she cleaned up and began work on her dream of becoming a songwriter. She spent a short time penning songs for The Turtles' production company before signing her own deal with Asylum. Pleased with the creative direction of Judee Sill, the singer-songwriter again teamed with engineer/producer Henry Lewy (Joni Mitchell, Neil Young) for her follow-up.
Rather than using an outside arranger for the strings (as she did on her previous album), Sill did all of the work herself. Her lack of formal training and the immense amount of orchestral overdubs certainly would have made such an outing a hardship for anyone. But the results are outstanding with echoes of Bach supporting the stellar early 70s Laurel Canyon singer/songwriter melodies. Sill's voice is stronger and Lewy's production more resonant. Built around the singer's guitar or piano, the songs are arranged with similar ambition. "There's A Rugged Road," a meditation on Christ's humanity, features country violins, pedal steel, multi-tracked vocals, and a hoofbeat rhythm. The gospel-influenced "Down Where The Valleys Are Low" burns with electric guitar, church organ, vibes, and doo-wop harmonies. The album's closing opus, "The Donor," uses male voices and tympani to build an intense medieval round.

BRIAN ENO - 14 Video Paintings: Thursday Afternoon/Mistaken Memories Of Mediaeval Manhattan [DVD] (All Saints/Hannibal/Ryko 1508; USA) Two '80s artvideo works by Brian Eno, originally released individually on VHS in 'vertical format' which meant you had to turn your TV on its side. Here they are both presented complete on 1 DVD, including a menu that allows you to choose whether you view them vertically, or horizontally for those not able or willing to mess with turning their monitor on its side!
MISTAKEN MEMORIES OF MEDIAEVAL MANHATTAN:
47 min. colour vertical; Filmed by Brian Eno in New York, 1980-81. Originally treated and assembled in New York and Toronto by B. Eno, for exhibition only. Re-assembled at London in Sept. 1987. All Music comes from On Land and Music for Airports, plus one other unreleased track, all by Brian Eno.
During the 1980s Brian created several video installations. In a reaction against the fast-cutting pop video culture, he concentrated on slow-moving subjects such as skylines and buildings. He was aided and abetted in this aim by a video camera that (according to whatever story he was telling) was either left behind in an apartment he moved into, or he bought from somebody who rushed into a store he was in. The camera produced an odd slightly impressionistic video image, and as Brian liked the effects of unexpected technical accidents, he kept using it. When making skyline recordings from his 13th-floor apartment Brian laid the camera on its side on the window-sill as he did not have a tripod, which meant that when the video was played back the viewer had to turn their television on its side (probably not something that can be done easily with 21st Century home cinema systems). Some of Brian's installations used multiple screens side by side, others had the television screen incorporated in a table-top so viewers looked down on it.
MMoMM has the Manhattan skyline as its subject, also with processing.
[...] "The pieces in "Mistaken Memories Of Mediaeval Manhattan" are long continuous shots of the Manhattan skyline, and what movement there is in them is not under my control: drifting clouds, rain, smoke, fleeting light and shadows, bird, aircraft." [...] Brian Eno, 1981

FRANK ZAPPA - Dub Room Special [DVD] (Eagle; USA) For nearly a decade, composer/rock guitarist/musical genius Frank Zappa and his band would descend upon New York City for their annual Halloween concert. A yearly tradition beginning in 1974, Zappa skipped the concert in 1982 even though he had recently scored his biggest commercial hit with the song 'Valley Girl'. Despite the decision not to tour, Zappa did not disappoint fans that looked forward to their yearly Halloween pilgrimage to New York City. Instead, he premiered a 90-minute documentary titled Frank Zappa's Dub Room Special at New York?s legendary Ritz Theater. The documentary features two concerts: Zappa's 1981 Halloween show at New York?s Palladium and the other from KCET Studios in December 1974 for the TV special ''A Token Of His Extreme.'' Paired with performances of Zappa classics such as 'Stinkfoot', 'Cosmik Debris', 'Montana' and 'Flakes' is the animation of Bruce Bickford who collaborated with Zappa on his previous documentary, Baby Snakes. Originally released on VHS and Beta in 1982, The Dub Room Special! has been a tough find for Zappa fans. Now it is available for the first-time ever on DVD. Featuring audio remixed in stereo, this highly sought-after collectors item was worth the wait.

FRANK ZAPPA - Baby Snakes [DVD] (Intercontinental Absurdities/MPI; USA) Frank Zappa's highly acclaimed film from 1979 includes over three hours of outrageous Zappa musical performances and unique & bizarre Claymation from Bruce Bickford. This is the full-length 3+ hour version [not the 2 hour edit that was in general release later on] of the film as it premiered at the Victoria Theatre in Times Square, New York on Zappa's birthday12/21/79, which both myself [Mannylunch] and Bruce were at and received a slice of cake from Zappa personally which he was cutting from a flatbed-sized cake off the back of a flatbed truck for all attendees of the 5 PM show! The live footage is from the week of Hallowe'en concerts [early and late shows 11/28-11/31] of the NY Palladium in 1977 [not '78 or '76 as you might have read elsewhere] whose lineup introduced psychotronic guitarist Adrian Belew to the rock world at large [in a kilt!], and included original Mothers Of Invention member Roy Estrada (US fall tour guest), Patrick O'Hearn, Terry Bozzio, Ed Mann, Tommy Mars, and Peter Wolf. Lots of backstage footage and lots of goofing off...and phenomenal performances!!!

FRANK ZAPPA - Does Humour Belong In Music: Frank Zappa Live 26th August 1984 [DVD] (EMI; UK) It is over 10 years since one of rock's most accomplished composers passed away. Frank Zappa, a man whose music paid homage to contemporary classical figures such as Stravinsky and Stockhausen, as well as late-'50s doo-wop and the guitar-heavy rock that dominated pop in the '70s. Zappa was a satirist with a wicked sense of humour and lyrics of questionable taste, but he was also one of the most prolific artists of his time, recording about 50 albums during his 40 years in music. "Does Humour Belong In Music"is taken from a live recording of Zappa's planned final tour in 1984 ['88 became the final tour] and was originally released on VHS in 1985. The performances on this film are different from the ones used on the CD of the same name, as the video is taken completely from one performance at the The Pier in NYC's Hudson River on 8/26/84. The band includes Ed Mann, Bobby Martin, Scott Thunes, Chad Wackerman, Ray White, Ike Willis, and Allan Zavod. This is the NTSC region 1 edition of this UK import.

NEW YORK'S 'NO WAVE' UNDERGROUND TV SHOW, GLENN O'BRIEN'S TV PARTY, NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD!

GLENN O'BRIEN'S TV PARTY - The Documentary (Brink) From 1978 to 1982, Glenn O'Brien hosted a New York city public access cable TV show called TV Party. Co-hosted by Chris Stein, from Blondie, and directed by filmmaker Amos Poe, the hour long show took television where it had never gone before: to the edge of civility and 'sub-realism' as Glenn would put it. Walter Steding and his TV Party "Orchestra" provided a musical accompaniment to the madness at hand, and many artists and musicians, from The Clash, Nile Rodgers, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Bryne and Arto Lindsey were regular guests. It was the cocktail party that could be a political party. In 1978, two revolutionary trends emerged in New York City, public access cable TV and punk rock. Public access was about do-it-yourself television. Punk was about do-it-yourself music (and do-it-yourself art and cinema.) These two phenomena were made for each other and they came together spectacularly in Glenn O'Brien's TV Party. Billed as 'The TV show that's a cocktail party but which could be a political party,' this public access hour brought an hour of the wildest of the wild to live television every week. Glenn O'Brien's BEAT, a column in Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine, was to cool downtown Manhattan what Ed Sullivan's and Walter Winchell's columns had been decades before, the barometer of what was happening. O'Brien decided to emulate Sullivan (and Johnny Carson and Hugh Hefner) and create a variety show that would spotlight the coolest of the cool. O'Brien recruited his pal Chris Stein, the guitarist of Blondie, as his co-host, fellow Factory kid Walter Steding as leader of The TV Party Orchestra, and underground film director Amos Poe as director and the rest, as you'll see, was history. Every week a who's who of bohemia congregated to 'have your party on TV,' as Debbie Harry would sing. Debbie was a regular, along with such luminaries as Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Fripp, David Byrne, banned SNL-er Charles Rocket, John Lurie, Richard Sohl of the Patti Smith Group, artist David Walter McDermott, Fred Schneider of the B-52s, Nile Rodgers of Chic, Tim Wright of DNA, sax genius Robert Aaron and Fab Five Freddie. TV Party was more than a new wave Tonight Show. It was modeled on Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark, a TV show in the format of a party. Every week hipsters tuned in to follow the antics of the TV Party gang and such guests as Iggy Pop, David Bowie, P-Funk's George Clinton, The Clash's Mick Jones, artist Chris Burden, James Chance, Kid Creole, Klaus Nomi, actor Robbie Coltrane, writer/actress Cookie Mueller, fashion guru Steven Meisel and catch performances from acts like Tuxedo Moon, the Brides of Funkenstein, Alex Chilton, Tuxedo Moon, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Tav Falco, DNA and the Funky Four Plus One More.
After two decades as a cult rumor, the TV Party archives have been digitally resurrected and made available by Brink Films. Leading off the TV Party bandwagon is TV Party, the movie, which made its world premier at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival. The TV Party documentary was produced by Kai Eric and Danny Vinik (Spun) and directed by Vinik. It mixes interviews with O'Brien, Harry, Stein, Steding, Poe, Brathwaite and company with hilarious footage from the show's four year run (1978-1982.)

GLENN O'BRIEN'S TV PARTY - Premier Episode - December 18, 1978 (Brink) In 1978 New York City was the scene of a movement called "punk" or "new wave" --an explosion of rebel music, underground art and new cinema. Glenn O'Brien was in the middle of it, writing his column, Glenn O'Brien's BEAT, for Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine. One night Glenn was a guest on a cable show "If I Can't Dance You Can Keep Your Revolution" hosted by Yippie pot advocate Coca Crystal. The next day he was approached by friends and strangers alike who had caught the show. Glenn thought "Hmm, people are watching public access cable TV." So he started his own show, Glenn O'Brien's TV Party. His best pal Chris Stein, Blondie's guitarist, became co-host and Walter Steding, Warhol's painting assistant, became leader of the TV Party Orchestra. Regulars included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab Five Freddie, Debborah Harry, John Lurie and Tim Wright of DNA. TV Party was "the cocktail party that could become a political party." The rest is TV history. This was the premier show.

GLENN O'BRIEN'S TV PARTY - Crusades Show - February 17, 1981 (Brink) February 17, 1981. Reagan was the new President. Iran had just released its American hostages, and Israel and the PLO had rejected Egypt's peace plan. It was a grim moment and TV Party decided to do something about it. Glenn announced a new Crusade to take back the Holy Land. "There are a lot of old things there," summed up Walter 'Doc' Steding "that I have discovered are really mine." It was a bitter cold snowy night and the studio audience was a small group of hearty partiers, but the TV Party gang made up for it in merriment. The TV Party Orchestra, featuring Chris Stein (in monk's hood) on harmonium, Lenny Ferrari (dressed as a Knight of the Red Cross) on flute, sorcerer Patrick Geoffrois of the Contortions on slide guitar and Walter Steding on organ, performed punk medieval music, including the Holy Land Funk rap delivered by Fab Five Freddy. Famed DJ Johnny Dynell made a guest appearance as an angel. Glenn, crowned with a pre-cable rabbit ears antenna, performed the first live TV mass orgone transmission, combining the theories of Wilhelm Reich and Marshall Macluhan, and the screen was punctuated by the wry words typed on screen by Jean Michel Basquiat.

GLENN O'BRIEN'S TV PARTY - Halloween Show - October 30, 1979 (Brink) Halloween 1979 happened to fall on a Wednesday, which means it was TV Party night! At 11PM, when White House records show that President Carter had retired for the night, Glenn O'Brien welcomed viewers to, "the TV show that's a costume party, but which could be a political party." Glenn is dressed in a casual Dolly Parton lesbian look. Chris Stein is a wicked witch. Debbie Harry is an umbrella. Richard Sohl is a "top model from the Candy Jones Agency" and teaches a new dance called "The Subway." Teri Toye is as a fairy princess. Fab Five Freddy is a nickel bag, interviewed on the dangers of things put into Trick or Treat bags. The TV Party Orchestra looks brilliant, with Lenny Ferrari as a cubist painting and Walter Steding as a computer containing a gelatin capsule. Glenn and gang talks about Halloween as All Soul's Eve, how to tell a god from a goblin, and the effects of drugs and costumes. Lenny performs a snide magic trick. But what makes this a great episode is that it's a real party, featuring lots of home viewers on the telephone. This is TV Party at is most dense and abstract, filled with cross-talk, double entendre and obscure information. Particularly amusing is a long stretch with Jean-Michel Basquiat talking to home viewers on the phone, talking them out of their negativity.

GLENN O'BRIEN'S TV PARTY - Time & Makeup Show - August 19, 1979 (Brink) Glenn O'Brien says "TV Party is interesting as a TV show, but it's a pretty good painting too." This show opens with a still frame. Just when you're ready to go nuts, a voice reassures: "There is nothing wrong with your television set." And mad action begins. TV Party was cable TV as pop art. It appeared sloppy and crude but it was deliberate sloppiness and crudeness. This episode plays with ideas of time and space, ("time is money" and "dead air") alternating between aggressive boredom and quick wit. The TV Party Orchestra (Walter Steding on violin, Lenny Ferrari on the New Yorker magazine, and Tim Wright on guitar) jams while host O'Brien performs the sublime feat of rolling a joint blindfolded while smoking a joint. The now legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel joins the gang, performing a makeover on a hillbilly gal found in the bar across the street. Percussionist extraordinaire David van Tieghem makes music with toys and kitchen utensils. Tim Wright and his girlfriend Marianne are "Fifi and Claude" performing a punk Parisian accordion/guitar duo. Ferrari's "Italian cousin" sleight of hand artist Luigi Ciccolini performs magic. Richard Sohl of the Patti Smith Group, artists Fab Five Freddie and Ronnie Cutrone and guitarist Robert Fripp answer phone calls from home viewers. It's all about "the makeup of time."

ALBERT MANGELSDORFF QUARTET - Diggin': Live at DUG Tokyo (Enja 2006; Germany) The master of multiphonics (playing more than one note at a time on a horn), Albert Mangelsdorff was a giant of the European avant-garde for over 30 years. Although this music could be called avant-garde, don't mistake it for "free" -there is nothing random about the notes picked or the many emotions expressed! -- Scott Yanow

This well-balanced set is one of Hannibal's finest recordings. -- Scott Yanow, AMG
