The newest volume of Intellectual Nourishment that we - and you - have been waiting for!

ARCANA [JOHN ZORN, Editor] - Arcana III: Musicians On Music [Book] (Tzadik/Hips Road B003; USA) Arcana III is the third groundbreaking collection of critical writings on avant-garde and experimental music put together by editor (and experimental music legend) John Zorn. In this volume, 30 distinguished composer/performers - including Wadada Leo Smith, Olga Neuwirth, Frank London, Gavin Bryars, Steven Bernstein, Maryanne Amacher, Henry Kaiser, Makigami Koichi, Greg Cohen, Christian Marclay, William Parker, Hal Willner, Sean Lennon, Pamelia Kurstin, Jerry Hunt - illuminate and speculate upon method and practice in the process of making, experiencing and thinking about music. Comprised of essays, scores, manifestoes and interviews both real and imaginary, Arcana III gives voice to a new generation of brave musical explorers who live outside of the mainstream academy.
John Zorn has created an influential body of work that defies academic categories. A native of New York City, he has been a central figure in the downtown scene since 1975, incorporating a wide range of musicians in various compositional formats. "The writings in the continuing Arcana series provide direct connections to the inner sanctums of some of the most extraordinary musical thinkers of our time. Technical, philosophical and mystical in nature, these essays reach out to the listener to illuminate the creative processes and hidden stratagem of a music (and a community) largely misjudged and unappreciated by mainstream culture. Arcana provides welcome tools for digging into the underground and can lead the creative mind toward an exciting world of possibilities for artists, musicians, musical theorists and curious listeners alike." - JZ, from the preface
"The Arcana series will come to be viewed as the most vital source of relevant information on creative music in the transitional opening of the third millennium. In a time period where mundane reading sources permeate the publishing world, this body of writings provide welcome intellectual nourishment for serious engagement and learning about creative thinking. John Zorn continues to lead by example in both his music and activist work, demonstrating the kind of dedication and leadership that inspires real positive growth and world change" - Anthony Braxton

ARCANA [JOHN ZORN, Editor] - Arcana II: Musicians On Music [Book] (Tzadik/Hips Road B002; USA) In his preface to the first Arcana: Musicians on Music (2000), avant-garde composer and saxophone player John Zorn wrote: "This book exists to correct an unfortunate injustice, the incredible lack of insightful critical writing about a significant generation of the best and most important work of the past two decades."
Volume 2 includes essays by: Christopher Adler, Mick Barr, Borah Bergman,Lisa Bielawa, Uri Caine, Noah Creshevsky, Steve Coleman, Sylvie Courvoisier, Chris Dench, Dave Douglas, Trevor Dunn, Jason Eckardt, Jewlia Eisenberg, Annie Gosfield, Milford Graves, Carla Kihlstedt, Lukas Ligeti, Jose Maceda, Ernesto Martinez, Butch Morris, Jim O'Rourke, Evan Parker, Zeena Parkins, Maja Ratkje, Marina Rosenfeld, Ned Rothenberg, Trey Spruance, JG Thirlwell, Matt Welch, Yamataka Eye

ARCANA [JOHN ZORN, Editor] - Arcana I: Musicians On Music [Book] (Tzadik/Hips Road B001; USA) This has over thirty Chapters/Essays written by musicians as diverse as Fred Frith, George Lewis, Myra Melford, Mike Patton, Scott Johnson, Gerry Hemingway, Marilyn Crispell, Peter Garland, Miya Masaoka, Ikue Mori, Larry Ochs, John Oswald, Bob Ostertag, Z'ev, David Shea, Elliott Sharp, Marc Ribot, Guy Klucevsek, Eyvind Kang, Mark Dresser, John Zorn, and many, many more. Subjects as diverse as "the historical sociobiology of downtown music, an American's reaction to the study of Gagaku, the sampling, deconstruction and reconstruction of pop books, extended contrabass techniques, and a savvy take on ear plugs, amplifier distortion and pain" [Steve Reich] and a whole universe of ideas more! "Arcana is a vibrant testimony to the continuing vitality of New Music...as idiosyncratic and eloquent with words as they [the musicians writing] are with music" - Meredith Monk

BROKEN ARM TRIO [ERIK FRIEDLANDER/TREVOR DUNN/MIKE SARIN] - Broken Arm Trio (Skipstone 02; USA) This is the long awaited trio offering featuring Erik Friedlander on cello, Trevor Dunn on acoustic bass and Michael Sarin on drums. Accoring to Erik Friedlander, this music was inspired by jazz legends: bassist Oscar Pettiford who also played cello and pianist Herbie Nichols. I've caught this wonderful trio on a couple of occasions and was knocked out each time. What is unique about this trio is that Erik Friedlander plays mostly pizzicato or plucked cello, rarely using his bow. This shouldn't come to too much of surprise to anyone who has seen or heard the Masada String Trio, who do a great deal of plucking. Erik has composed all the songs on this gem and as I listen each one is special in some way. "Spinning Plates" swings infectiously and features some superb soloing from all three members. Mike Sarin's nimble brushwork is indeed exquisite. "Pearls" is extremely delicate and has a most haunting melody that recalls one of the more lyrical and unforgettable Masada songs. What I find most magical about this trio is the way they constantly switch roles, melodically and rhythmically. There is no actual leader here since each member is an integral part of the whole (trio). There are way too many great moments on this disc to describe them all, yet a handful of pieces do standout. On both, "Pretty Penny" and "Buffalo," both Erik and Trevor take quick, exciting solos that leaves us on the edge of our seats. When Erik finally brings out his bow on "Big Shoes," the effect is even more astonishing than usual. Again, Erik Friedlander delivers one of this year's finest treasures. - BLG

ERIK FRIEDLANDER - Block Ice & Propane (Skipstone 01; USA) The downtown cellist Erik Friedlander showcases a magnificent new solo album, "Block Ice & Propane," which is inspired by family road trips he took as a child with his father, Lee, the very-well known photographer. The beautifully spare compositions vaguely recall Ry Cooder's score for "Paris, Texas" while revealing the cello to be - at least in Friedlander's hands--a versatile instrument that can sound like a steel-string guitar one moment and an air horn the next.

SUN RA & HIS SOLAR ARKESTRA - Secrets Of The Sun (UMS/Atavistic 266; USA) The fourth deluxe RA reissue in the O-Card format from the UMS, released in conjunction with EL SATURN Records has arrived: A superb reissue of a mind-numbingly rare Saturn Records document from '62- with a previously unreleased 17 min. track... all available for the first time on CD!
"SECRETS OF THE SUN is one of the last great early 60s Saturn LPs to be reissued, and is one of his classic early New York releases. So rare that it is barely known even by hard-nosed Ra collectors, it contains music related in approach, acoustics, and arrangement to the more widely heard material on Out There A Minute (Blast First). From a fertile period in Ra's oeuvre, the "Solar" years, this group is more loose-limbed and ragged than the Chicago bands, and considerably more edgy.
To augment this reissue of SECRETS OF THE SUN, we have included a track that was originally designed to be the B-side of another Saturn record (catalog number 547, a great mystery among Ra-o-philes)- a production that was slated but never issued. Tracking in at the length of an LP side, "Flight To Mars" comes from the same period exactly, with an extremely unusual tape-collage introduction, spliced onto a tremendously swinging, aggressive feature for drums and extended solos all around. Needless to say, it's an honor and pleasure to finally issue this music after it had rested so long in the can. Perhaps you'll agree that it's only gotten better with age. A well-kept secret indeed. -John Corbett, Chicago/July, 2008

MARY HALVORSON/JESSICA PAVONE//DEVIN HOFF/CHES SMITH - Calling All Portraits (Skycap 49; Germany) Featuring Mary Halvorson on guitar, Jessica Pavone on viola & vocals, Devin Hoff on bass and Ches Smith on drums. This is an extraordinary bi-coastal all-star quartet whose collective experience includes collaborations with Anthony Braxton, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, Ben Goldberg, Fred Frith and Weasel Walter. Hence, their music is quite diverse and beyond category. Terms like jazz, rock, noise, classical, progressive, free, folky and such are besides the point. The title track opens and is a unique blend of free yet charted, acoustic and electric, start and stop and occasional spastic structures. It is not easy describe since it moves through so many unexpected twists and turns, yet remains fascinating nonetheless. I dig how on "Anxiety Disorder," we can hear folk and progressive influences, this doesn't really explain what exactly in going on. On "The 5," the band is split inhalf with the guitar and drums playing fast and furious intricate parts while the viola and bass play a slower, more lyrical counterpoint, eventually the two halves combine for an enchanting, melodic jazz/rock section with inspired solo from both Jessica and Mary. The west coast rhythm team is consistently impressive as they reinvent themselves and switch roles throughout. There are two tracks that are collective improvisations in which the quartet seems to switch positions throughout, balancing on the head of pin and pulling off a number of surprising shifts. "Six Keys for Each City" has slightly bent repeating line that is hypnotic yet keeps changing as it fragments in different directions."China" features some rather strange harmonies and odd notes for the three strings to play, in between exotic and alien. What I like most about this is that it will take some time to absorb the different twists and influences that make this concoction so unique. - BLG

MOSTLY OTHER PEOPLE DO THE KILLING [MOPPA ELLIOTT/PETER EVANS/JON IRABAGON/KEVIN SHEA] - This Is Our Moosic (Hot Cup 82; USA) Featuring Peter Evans on trumpet, Jon Irabagon on alto sax, Moppa Elliott on double bass and Kevin Shea on drums. This is the third fabulous disc from Moppa Elliott's Mostly Other People or MOPDTK and again Moppa's twisted vision is modern jazz and its long history are on display. Both the CD title and cover art is based on the Ornette Coleman Quartet album, 'This is Our Music,' as well as the same instrumentation and inspiration from Ornette's music. Moppa's informative liner notes help us to understand the historical placement of lessons learned by Ornette's examples.
"Drainlick" opens this swell disc with what Moppa refers to as a boogaloo lick and it certainly does make me want to dance (boogie?). At least until it slows down into a sort of blues with the first of many amazing solos from the irrepressible Peter Evans on trumpet. The incredible rhythm team shifts gears and tempos throughout and are quite impossible to be taken lightly. The equally mighty Jon Irabagon also takes a colossal funky sax solo here as well. "Two Boot Jacks" is dedicated to (funky 60's saxist) Boots Randolph and the quartet takes this funky riff and turns it inside out and upside down. Too much! What I dig most about this quartet is the way they take a certain aspect of sixties jazz structures and then twist them into all kinds of unexpected shapes. Meanwhile both Peter and Ira will take astonishing solos that most will find hard to believe. These cats are unstoppable and have an unquenchable thirst for excitement and exploration, yet still hold on the various lessons (styles or structures) gleaned in the sixties and seventies. Even when they choose a smooth jazz melody like in "East Orwell," the solos still push things further and further out. Is nothing sacred? What I find most interesting is the way their songs move in different directions at the same time, nothing lasts for long or is what it seems to be. MOPDTK certainly know their jazz history and consistently draw from the many streams yet they are not afraid to abandon, alter and manipulate what they've learned. If this is the future of jazz, then it is great sign of things to come. - BLG

ANDREW HILL & CHICO HAMILTON - Dreams Come True (Joyous Shout; USA) Dreams Come True is a monumental musical conversation between two of jazz's most innovative elder statesmen. Chico Hamilton (b.1921) and Andrew Hill (1931-2007) bring their varying styles together into a distinct, mutual song of ideas soaked with wit and humor. This '93 debut recording is a document of a moment in time when this remarkable duo came together sharing their compositional prowess and profound understanding of instrumentation. Only once before did they join forces back in 1991 at the Charlotte Jazz Festival.

DAVE HOLLAND SEXTET With ANTONIO HART/ROBIN EUBANKS/MULGREW MILLER et al - Pass It On (Dare2/Emarcy; USA) Pass It On is the 2008 release by Dave Holland. The album features nine tracks by Dave Holland (upright bass) with Antonio Hart (alto saxophone); Alex Sipagin (trumpet); Robin Eubanks (trombone); Mulgrew Miller (piano) and Eric Harland (drums). This stellar sextet debuted at the beginning of 2006 and subsequently did a number of performances before going into the studio to document their rare chemistry. Pass It On features newly-realized arrangements of some potent Holland compositions from past recordings, including "Lazy Snake" and "Equality" (from 'Dream of the Elders'), and the uptempo burner 'Double Vision' (from 'Seeds of Time').

John Gilmore was Sun Ra's most constant collaborator for some forty years, as well as one of the most influential avant/jazz tenor saxists ever. His appearance as a sideman are few & far between, perhaps a dozen at the most (Art Blakey, Andrew Hill, Paul Bley, Freddie Hubbard & Pete LaRoca). Here is yet another rare session with the equally legendary and under-recorded trumpet hero Dizzy Reece. Can't wait to hear it! - BLG

JOHN ETTINGER/PETER FORBES - Inquatica (JE 03; USA) Featuring John Ettinger on violin, loops, piano & bass and Pete Forbes on drums, percussion, banjo & piano. This is the third disc from Bay area violinist, John Ettinger, that we've reviewed and again I am pleased to hear this adventurous musician continue to explore a variety of sounds. Although John's first two discs featured quartets with Bay area players like Devin Hoff and Scott Amendola, here John has stripped things down to just this splendid duo with a drummer that I've not heard of until now. The duo wrote or improvised all of the pieces here except for a cover of "Stardust" by Hoagy Carmichael. Although just a duo, both musicians overdub other instruments when need be. "Dancing with the Other Side" is stark and spacious, using just floating fragments of violin, piano, percussion and what sounds like backwards samples. On "A Place to be From," we hear just exquisite wisps of acoustic violin and banjo, minimal, ultra-subtle melodic scrapes. By the fourth part of this suite, "Layers," the duo hit their stride with an infectious slightly funky groove. The slippery electric bass and slamming drums do a great job of backing the inspired electric violin and occasional piano backing. The second suite begins with the title track which features more eerie backwards sounds and delicate plucked strings. "Stardust" is a lovely standard and here gets a touching, melancholy rendition, which fits perfectly with the haunting pieces surrounding it. "The Wake" is an appropriate titled piece with dreamy, floating electric violin and ECM-like sizzling cymbals and drums. For the third and final suite, the duo hits their stride and erupts more intensely. On "High Coup," they rock hard with some fine wah-wah violin and great electric bass riff, steamy electric piano and rocking drums. "Swim" also has an infectious groove with layers of strings, piano and swirling drums. John Ettinger is a master of moods and textures on this fine disc, often evoking various uplifting vibrations without depending on solos too much. The final piece is called "Film," which seems most apt since the entire disc does feel like an audio version of a film - very programmatic. - BLG

JOHN ETTINGER With TONY MALABY/DEVIN HOFF/SCOTT AMENDOLA - Kissinger In Space (JE 02; USA) Featuring John Ettinger on violin & loops, Tony Malaby on tenor sax, Devin Hoff on acoustic bass and Scott Amendola on drums, loops & electric mbira. Both the rich and varied melodies that Mr. Ettinger has written, as well as the sympathetic balance/playing that the violin and tenor sax weave togther throughout, turns this endeavor into a more magical one. John also lets both rhythm team members set up the inner web of structure just right on each piece. - BLG

New on Norway's Jazzland label!

Norwegian keyboard wiz, Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label has been around for the past decade, but has had little distribution in the US. DMG is finally dealing with the great label directly and is now offering their entire catalogue, which is listed below. So far, I only heard a half dozen of the nearly 30 discs and everything I've heard has been great. As for a good place to start, try any of the Atomic discs, all are great, both CD's by Ingebrigt Haker Flaten are superb and diverse. We will review some/many of these gems as time goes on and we get a chance to listen closely...

ATOMIC [FREDRIK LJUNGKVIST/MAGNUS BROO/HAVARD WIIK/INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN/PAAL NILSSEN LOVE] - Retrograde [3 CD Box Set] (JazzlandNOR; EEC) The Scandinavian quintet Atomic are now entering, in piano player Haavard Wiik's words, "our difficult second box set-phase". Not too many years have passed since their universally acclaimed 3-disk bonanza The Bikini Tapes, but now they are at it again with Retrograde. The triple collection is bursting with exciting new material that is further advancing the legacy of this stellar jazz combo. Their initial goal of combining the american Fire music of the sixties with the advanced stylings of european improvisational music have since long been achieved, and they are now constantly refining and/or attacking their own tradition.
3 CD set for $27

INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN QUINTET - The Year of the Boar (JazzlandNOR; EEC) The Year of the Boar introduces the powerhouse bassist's new band, a five-piece that reflects his adopted home in the American prairie (he's lived in Chicago since late 2006) as well as his deep roots in the bustling Norwegian jazz scene. The result is nothing short of a full marshaling of trans-Atlantic creative music forces, a roundhouse punch in the face of complacent listening.
The quintet includes three of Chicago's brightest, most exciting improvisers. Guitarist Jeff Parker is one of the kingpins of the scene, traversing jazz, rock, experimental, dub, electronic, and improvised music worlds with astonishing grace. Imbued with a magnetic musicality and equipped with massive creative intellect, Parker's incisive guitar spurs Tortoise and Ken Vandermark's (((Powerhouse Sound))) with equal surety. Another Vandermark associate, saxophonist Dave Rempis, is also a central figure in Chicago, both as a bandleader/improvisor and as a presenter/promoter. His baritone and alto are fluid and fiery, an elemental force. The youngest Chicagoan in the fivesome is drummer Frank Rosaly, a glorious partner for Flaten who integrates the full range of percussion possibilities, from hardcore swing to pneumatic rock to non-metrical freeplay. From Norway, to complete the ensemble, Flaten invited violinist Ola Kvernberg, an adept and versatile voice and the perfect front-line complement to Rempis and Parker.

ATOMIC [FREDRIK LJUNGKVIST/MAGNUS BROO/HAVARD WIIK/INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN/PAAL NILSSEN LOVE] - Boom Boom (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Boom Boom is the much anticipated follow up to Atomic's debut album Feet Music. One of the most exhilarating groups on the European jazz circuit combing collective melodic ingenuity, fierce energy and individual virtuosity they are widely seen as one of the most important up and coming bands in jazz. This release won the Norwegian Grammy for best Jazz album 2003.

ATOMIC [FREDRIK LJUNGKVIST/MAGNUS BROO/HAVARD WIIK/INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN/PAAL NILSSEN LOVE] - Feet Music (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Atomic's debut album "Feet Music" presents the latest instalment of exciting and creative new jazz from Jazzland. One of the key bands of the 'new wave' of Scandinavian jazz currently attracting much press attention, Atomic brings together five important young musicians from the adventurous jazz underground of Sweden and Norway. Formed in spring 1999, they quickly forged a strong group identity without sacrificing individual freedom of expression. Combining the powerful, cutting edge Oslo rhythm section of Havard Wiik on piano, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums -- a combination that received rave notices as the rhythm team of the Coltrane-influenced 'cult' group Element -- with the Stockholm front-line of trumpeter Magnus Broo and saxophonist Fredrik Ljungkvist, this group are one of the freshest acoustic ensembles to have emerged in the new millennium.

ATOMIC [FREDRIK LJUNGKVIST/MAGNUS BROO/HAVARD WIIK/INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN/PAAL NILSSEN LOVE] - Happy New Ears! (JazzlandNOR; EEC) How do you follow up the release of a universally acclaimed triple live album Bikini Tapes? By releasing a CD filled to the brim with 65 minutes of amazing new material. The combined talent of Fredrik Ljungkvist (saxophones, clarinet), Magnus Broo (trumpet), Paal Nilssen-Love (drums), Ingebrigt Haker Flaten (bass) and Havard Wiik (piano) is just that: Atomic. EIVIND AARSET - Sonic Codex (JazzlandNOR; EEC) "Sonic Codex", the forth Jazzland album by Eivind Aarset, is perhaps the strongest album he has produced so far. This is no mean achievement, considering his debut as a bandleader, "Electronique Noire" was hailed by The New York Times as "one of the best Post-Miles electric jazz albums". That album's successors, "Light Extracts" and "Connected", also met with equally effusive comments from critics of many backgrounds, not just jazz. The album "Connected" gave the first clue to Aarset's long-term goal of creating a truly unified body of work. "Sonic Codex" takes that concept, restates, elaborates, and then amplifies it to create a true masterwork that may well be a defining moment in both Aarset's career and the history of Jazzland.
CD $17

EIVIND AARSET - Connected (JazzlandNOR; EEC) This is guitarist Eivind Aarset's third opus, neatly following on from his first "Electronique noire"- output which first brought attention to Norway's well-kept secret jazz talent.
CD $17

EIVIND AARSET - Light Extracts (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Guitarist Eivind Aarset - one of the voices from the Norwegian jazz underground, saw 'Electronique Noire', his first release as a leader, hailed as 'One of the best post Miles electric jazz albums' by none other than The New York Times as well as America's leading jazz magazine 'Jazz Times' and the UK's 'Jazzwise'. Now 'Light Extracts', his much-anticipated follow up album, is set to establish Eivind as one of the key voices in European Nu-Jazz.
CD $17

EIVIND AARSET - Electronique Noire (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Eivind Aarset's first solo album. He performs all the guitars: straight, treated, e-bowed, looped, ugly and pretty. Aarset is also responsible for all compositions, arrangements, recording, programming, sampling and bass.
CD $17

THE CORE - Office Essentials (JazzlandNOR; EEC) From the opening track, Bolero, it is clear that The Core is a no-nonsense jazz band, hell-bent on making the kind of music they not only like to play, but like to listen to. With a strong melodic base, Moster pushes his sax to the sonic limits, sustaining a loose and free statement of the melody in view, even when it is far beyond what could reasonably be called "tenor".
CD $17

INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN - Quintet (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Ingebrigt Haker Flaten is today established as one of the most flexible and vibrant young players on the international circuit and has participated on over 70 recordings. Haker Flaten has played the bass in leading Norwegian groups such as Bugge Wesseltoft's "new conceptions of jazz", The Source, Element, Trygve Seim Orchestra and Close Erase. Ingebrigt Haker Flaten - Bass; Anders Hana - Guitar; Ola Kvernberg - Violin, Mandolin; Klaus Ellerhusen Holm - Clarinet, Baritone and Alto Sax; Fredrik Rundqvist - Drums

MARIA KANNEGARD TRIO - Camel Walk (JazzlandNOR; EEC) This is pianist Maria Kannegaard's third album, recorded as a trio together with Ole Morten Vagan on contra bass, and Thomas Stronen on drums. HAKON KORNSTAD - Single Engine (JazzlandNOR; EEC) After ten years of strengthening technique, discovering nuances, and playfully exploring the sonic possibilities of the sax, Hakon Kornstad finally has released his own solo effort in "Single Engine".
CD $17

HAKON KORNSTAD TRIO With MATS EILERTSEN/PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE - Space Available (JazzlandNOR; EEC) "Space Available" is the first album of one of Norway's most critically acclaimed jazz groups. Over the past few years, a new generation of musicians has entered the Norwegian jazz scene that for so many years meant Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Jon Christensen, Arild Andersen and Karin Krog, but few others to the international jazz audience. Mainly thanks to the Special Jazz Studies at the Music Conservatory in the city of Trondheim, a steady flow of well-developed new talent has enrichened the Norwegian jazz scene during the nineties, and three of its most exciting and creative players have joined forces in The Kornstad Trio, a fearlessly improvising little powerhouse with an amazing degree of interplay that is rapidly gaining international recognition.
CD $17

OLA KVERNBERG TRIO - Night Driver (JazzlandNOR; EEC) The Ola Kvernberg Trio was established in 2000, at that time it consisted of violinist Ola Kvernberg together with bassist Steinar Raknes and American guitar player Doug Raney.
CD $17

MOTIF - Apo Calypso (JazzlandNOR; EEC) MOTIF was founded in the fall of -99, and have since that time been working continuously with the creation of their own sound, a sound that echoes the acoustic outings of Miles Davis, the structures of Ligeti, and the electronic collage of Aphex Twin. The band members met studying at Trondheim Conservatory's Jazz Department, and are now key players in the young European improvising scene.

PUNKT FESTIVAL [V.A. With SWEET BILLY PILGRIM/MERRIWINKLE/JON HASSELL/SIDSEL ENDRESEN et al] - Live Remixes Vol.1 (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Punkt: THE dual-concept music festival that has been tearing up the rulebooks since 2005 in Kristiansand, Norway.
Performance meets remix, stage meets studio. Where jazz blurred the boundaries between rehearsal and performance, Punkt blurs the boundaries between performance, recording and mixing. "Normal" concerts happen on stage 1, and are simultaneously remixed live on stage 2. And the live performances are not just limited to jazz: Punkt has involved the entire spectrum of modern and classical styles - if it's good music, it's welcomed as a friend. And for good measure, visual improvisation is often added to this electric sensory intermixture. Other projects claim to be innovative; the Punkt festival is undiluted innovation.
The Live Remix concept: The multi-channel sound from the Punkt Festival Main Stage is transferred live to a small stage/studio environment called The Alpha Room, which is open to the public during the festival. In this intimate setting, the music is immediately remixed by acclaimed musicians, producers and remixers.
The album Punkt Live Remixes vol. 1 consists of two of these Live Remixes from the Punkt Festival:
- Sidsel Endresen / Jan Bang / Erik Honore's Live Remix of the concert by British band Sweet Billy Pilgrim (from the Punkt 07 festival)
- Jon Hassell / Audun Kleive / Jan Bang / Erik Honor's Live Remix of the Merriwinkle concert (from the Punkt 05 festival).
The artwork for Punkt Live Remixes vol. 1 was created by musician/visual artist Russell Mills, who was in the audience at the Endresen / Bang / Honore Live Remix in 2007. Mills is known both for his paintings and installations, and for his album cover art and musical collaborations with artists like Brian Eno, David Sylvian and Nine Inch Nails.

BUGGE WESSELTOFT - IM (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Here on "IM" Bugge has the courage to let the Jazzland trick-nology take a temporary sabbatical - allowing the recordings to asborb the all the richness of his sound, melody and the depth. Yes, for Bugge Wesseltoft in 2007, 88 notes is all it takes - a black and white piano horizon where all the true Jazzland colours are there for the listener. But this is not stictly acoustic pianoforte, no. In genuine Jazzland zeitgeist Bugge sequences subtle sound design, field-recordings, shocking news reports from around our f***ed up world, hand-played organic percussion grooves, and with Sami World music legend Mari Boine also providing a soulful "jazzland-meets-blue-joik" guest appearance.

BUGGE WESSELTOFT - Moving (JazzlandNOR; EEC) "Moving" is a perfect document of Bugge's new world order of jazz, ripping up the standards, and effortlessly taking the listener on a daring musical journey where melody and groove, soundscape and soul all come together, crossing over where others have tried, but failed. Be there, one foot on the dance floor - the other in the stratosphere!

BUGGE WESSELTOFT NEW CONCEPTION OF JAZZ - Film Ing (JazzlandNOR; EEC) "Film ing" is the new masterpiece. Bugge back to his studio after last year`s phenomenal live output, recordings and tours and back to the roots and rudiments of his "New conception of jazz". Filmatic, melancholy nordic piano resonances, punishing synth funk, organic grooves, and guest musicianship of the highest calibre: all directed by the ever-watchful and forward-thinking Bugge.

BUGGE WESSELTOFT NEW CONCEPTION OF JAZZ - Live (JazzlandNOR; EEC) There has been a lot of talk about future-jazz. There have been many tried and tested attempts at fusing the best of improvisation and electronics - but nothing yet comes close to the phenomenon of Bugge Wesseltoft's "New Conception of Jazz" - and it is here we hear action, the answer, and the music speaking for itself.

BUGGE WESSELTOFT NEW CONCEPTION OF JAZZ - Sharing (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Bugge Wesseltoft's second album "Sharing" is built on the same concepts as his first record, to combine acoustic jazz and techno music. WIBUTEE - Playmachine (JazzlandNOR; EEC) Playmachine is an absolutely "in-your-face" experience. Instruments change functions rapidly, from a solo spot to a rhythm instrument, and before you know it, you are grappling with trying to decide if you hear loops or actual recordings. Inspired by the roots of jazz-rock, the funky has become funkier, the hard even harder.

HAVARD WIIK - Postures (JazzlandNOR; EEC) This is a most delicate piano trio, led by one of Norways most extraordinarily talented musicians. Havard Wiik is a pianist who has the rare ability to pleasantly surprise, sometimes even shock, his audience over and over again, every time he enters the stage. You might think -well, I ve heard him at least 50 times before, now I must ve heard it all - and then, there he goes again, presenting his music in totally new wrappings, different styles, fresh angles - with never a dull moment, but always with a nerve that keeps you curious and impatient - what will happen next? Havard Wiik - Piano; Mats Eilertsen - Bass; Per Oddvar Johansen - Drums

HAVARD WIIK TRIO - The Arcades Project (JazzlandNOR; EEC) All though he is still quite young in years, Havard Wiik ranks among the uppermost and most widely acclaimed jazz pianists in Norway, with talents that have brought him all around the world. He made his first major appearance on the scene in 1995, with Element, but for the last 10 years he has been a key player in many groups, such as Atomic, Free Fall, Atomic Schooldays, a duo with Hakon Kornstad, a new project with Axel Dorner and Fredrik Ljungqvist, among others. He has been an obvious choice as collaborator with giants in jazz, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano representing the old school, and Ken Vandermark being a soul mate from the here and now.

TRYGVE SEIM/FRODE HALTLI - Yeraz (ECM 2044; USA) Norwegian musicians Seim and Haltli have collaborated often over the years, and Frode is also a member of Trygve's Sangam ensemble. But the flexible duo format has provided a particularly useful forum for the exploration of the most divergent music - from the Armenian folk song that gives the album its title to free play, from Gurdjieff to Bob Marley's Redemption Song, and new and old tunes by Trgyve - as well as the exploration of sound, the plangent cry of the sax against the accordion's breathing reeds. The Seim/Haltli duo has been a popular touring unit in recent seasons: this is the first, eagerly-anticipated, recorded documentation of its music.

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR [PETER HAMMILL/DAVID JACKSON/HUGH BANTON/GUY EVANS] - Time Vaults (Plastic Head; UK) 2008 release from Van Der Graaf Generator, a collection of archive recordings from the band's 'lost' period, recorded between 1972 and 1975: post- Pawn Hearts and pre- Godbluff. Peter Hammill personally compiled the album from rare and archive tapes. Some overdubs were added but the whole album was recorded in nine hours to retain the spirit of the original venture. Some are studio live recordings and others are studio rarities. They are often works in progress that never made it vinyl in this form but have the basis for later tracks. It has at times a random freeform nature with some band versions of solo songs.

UWE KROPINSKI - The Mani is a Guitar [DVD] (Jazzwerkstatt 2001; Germany) [NTSC Region "0" (all regions). NTSC/All regions. Filmed in September of 2007 in Berlin and featuring the amazing guitarist, Uwe Kropinski from Doppelmoppel, on solo acoustic Sharpach guitars and interview as well. In this extraordinary video, Uwe plays this lovely custom-made nylon string acoustic guitar whose long fretboard goes almost down the pegs on the bottom. Uwe playing is both beautiful and often astonishing. Like virtuoso Flamenco guitarists or classical guitar wizards, Uwe is just a phenomenal guitarist. Uwe doesn't use a pick, just his fingers and hands, occasionally tapping on the front of the guitar for percussion. Uwe also sings some haunting wordless vocals on a couple of these pieces, adding even more to their delightful charm. Even between each piece is a short spoken word (in German) from Uwe, most likely talking about the piece coming up. On "Running Children" Uwe accompanies himself by tapping (on the guitar & with his foot) with small shakers attached to his foot. If you have any appreciation for a dynamic acoustic guitar performance, then you will be fascinated and flabbergasted throughout. Since Uwe Kropinski rarely if ever plays in the US, this is a rare and most worthy opportunity to see and hear him do his thing. - BLG

KIRILI ET LES NYMPHEAS [THOMAS BUCKNER/DALILA KHATIR/ROSCOE MITCHELL/JEROME BOURDELLON] - Hommage A Monet/Habiter Le Present [CD + DVD] (Mutable 17531; USA) "Music performed by: Jerome Bourdellon (flutes, bass clarinet); Thomas Buckner (baritone); Dalila Khatir (soprano); Roscoe Mitchell (alto & soprano saxophones). This deluxe package includes a film by Jean-Paul Fargier, Habiter Le Present (To Live The Present), featuring the musicians recorded at the Musee de l'Orangerie. Enclosed as well is a 14-page booklet with color photos of the musicians among Alain Kirili's sculptures and Monet's paintings by Ariane Lopez-Huici, and a 18-page booklet containing an essay by French philosopher Paul Audi in both English and French. Two musicians at the peak of their sensitivity: Roscoe Mitchell and Jerome Bourdellon. A singer at the height of his finesse: Thomas Buckner. A woman of intelligent and generous beauty: Dalila Khatir, whose singing takes its source from the dance - or the dance from the singing, we shall never know. These are the musicians intimately involved with Hommage A Monet, the latest in an ongoing series of collaborations between the artist Alain Kirili and improvising musicians, dancers and composers over many years. Other collaborators have included violinists Leroy Jenkins and Billy Bang, saxophonists Joseph Jarman and Steve Lacy, trombonist Roswell Rudd, pianist Cecil Taylor, dancer Maria Mitchell, and composers Alvin Lucier and Somei Satoh. The improvisatory energy that is palpable in Kirili's sculpture and drawing is in part inspired by his deep relationship with improvised music, and this energy in turn inspires the musicians and dancers to make the energy in the sculpture audible and visible. Hommage A Monet is also the latest in a series of dialogues with great artists of the past that Kirili has exhibited in major museums over many years. Bourdellon, Buckner, Khatir, and Mitchell participated in this project and had the opportunity to respond musically and kinetically to the dialogue between Alain Kirili's sculpture and one of the greatest icons of modern art, Claude Monet's 'Les Nympheas' (Water Lilies). The performance took place on June 21, 2007 as a part of the great 'Fete de la Musique' that occurs all over France on the longest day of the year. The Musee de l'Orangerie graciously allowed a performance in the presence of the newly-reinstalled Nympheas, and gave the musicians and filmmaker Jean-Paul Fargier access to the museum on the day before the performance for rehearsal and filming of the DVD."

CRAIG GREEN/DAVID KING - Craig Green + David King (Long Song 108; Italy) Featuring Craig Green on acoustic & electric guitars, electronics & compositions and Dave King on drums, percussion, vibes & piano. Although I had not heard of Craig Green before this disc, no doubt many know of the great drummer Dave King from the super-popular Bad Plus and Happy Apple. Starting with "Thin Blue Ice" which features stark piano and distant spooky drones. On "Faux Hawk," Craig has a dark, sort-of Marc Ducret-like tone with some slow shredding guitar while David plays fine marching, jazz/rock drums. Craig plays some spacy, liquid-sounding guitar sounds on "Part 2" while David plays some crafty metal percussion. Dave also plays some melodic, bluesy piano on a few of these pieces while Craig plays some superb, subtle jazz guitar. On each piece, both players change their sound or approach so that each piece sounds different. While David plays stark drums on "Rock, Paper, Scissors,'' Craig switches between acoustic and electric guitars to create different layers or textures. Rubbing the strings, eerie swirls of feedback and harmonics suspended in the air all add a mysterious vibe to this haunting piece. What I dig about this disc is the way both players don't depend on any obvious melodic cliches but rather create music with focused sounds. Much of this disc has a more cinematic vibe, painting pictures and setting up certain scenes. A long and varied journey to some unexpected places. - BLG

FRANCISCO MELA With JASON MORAN/MARK TURNER/LIONEL LOUEKE - Cirio: Live At The Blue Note (Halfnote 4536; USA) It's no secret that for most of the 20th Century, Cuban music and musicians played important roles in influencing and revitalizing North American popular culture. From Ernesto Lecuona and Desi Arnaz to Chano Pozo, Paquito D'Rivera and Gloria Estefan, a wide stylistic panorama, from classical to pop and jazz idioms, has been constantly invigorated by the presence of supremely talented Cuban musicians and their distinctive music traditions.
Since his debut release, Melao, the Cuban-born drummer Mela has increasingly become one of the most talked about and in-demand drummers on the scene in New York and beyond. He is currently a favorite among elite jazz instrumentalists such as Joe Lovano (Us Five), John Scofield (John Scofield Trio), Joanne Brackeen and as a regular member of Kenny Barron's working trio, all of whom cite his charisma, sophistication, and life-affirming spirit.
This is Francisco Mela's first live record and second recording as a leader. He has assembled a superior cast of playmates - Jason Moran, Lionel Loueke, Mark Turner and Larry Grenadier - for this live recording captured at the Blue Note Club in New York City. Together they make music informed by the rhythms of Mela's homeland, while also going beyond into adventurous modern jazz. In the process, he evinces a versatility rare among young players; his interactions with different combinations of group members underscore his collaborative instincts.

OK|OK [KYOKO KITAMURA/MICHAEL McGINNIS/KHABU DOUG/TONY MORENO] - Eating Mantis (RKM 10; USA) Featuring Kyoko Kitamura on vocals & laptop, Michael McGinnis on clarinets & percussion, Khabu Doug Young on guitar and Tony Moreno on drums. Kyoto Kitamura is an extraordinary experimental/jazz vocalist who has played here at DMG on numerous occasions and has knocked me our every time. Whether playing with Ras Moshe in duos, trios or quartets, or working with Steve Coleman, Kyoko always surprises with the unique sounds that her voice and laptop come up with. This is the long-awaited debut from her band, OK-OK, as it was well worth the wait. Commencing with "Enter Here," Kyoko's eerie voice is bathed in echoes with somber cymbals surrounding. "Hide and Seek" is a lovely, jazz-like ballad with sublime clarinet, guitar & drums surrounding Kyoko's voice, that builds to a high flying joyous conclusion. I love the quick-moving scat-singing that she does on "Kocchisthis" while the guitar, clarinet & drums swirl tightly around her voice. Even when Kyoko does a spoken word piece, she tells a story that is most intriguing. On "Underworld," Kyoko twists her voice bizarre shapes while Khabu answers with some spooky guitar chords. Most effective and somewhat disturbing. In a world where most pop(ular) music singers consistently play it safe, it is great to hear someone taking chances by using and extending her voice in a variety of challenging and convincing ways. - BLG

SOUND OFF 2002 [V.A.] - Typewriting Aloud/Typos Allowed (Hermes Discorbie 004; EEC) Strange sampler from the last Intermedia Sound Off festival devoted entirely to that ancient writing implement - the typewriter. The fifteen artists include Paul Panhuysen, Gen Ken Montgomery, Carl Stone, The Lazy Anarchists, Al Margolis (If, Bwana), Teoria Otrasu, Jozef Cseres, Brandon LaBelle, Adnan Balcinovic, en, Michael Delia, S.K.Y., Peter Strickland and gal. In the foreword by Jozef Cseres, he mentions his lifelong fascination with typewriters, although not owning many other modern technological conveniences. Since taking typing in high school, I also have had a fascination for this often overlooked convenience, that we take for granted. The thick booklet included here has compositions, texts or artwork from all of the involved sound artists, as well as contribution from other artists. Each piece deals with his or her own typewriting observation and utilizes typewriting samples differently. Sometimes the typing is altered and layered, sometimes a voice speaks out the letters and symbols as they are used. There is a great deal more going on here than one would imagine from the world typewriters.

ESTHER VENROOY & HELEEN VAN HAEGENBORGH - Mock Interiors (Entr'acte 55; UK) Esther Venrooy's eerie whispering electronics attaches and transforms Helen Van Haegenborgh's sparse piano tone clusters to create a shadow for each frequency that gently resonates your ear drums. "Mock Interiors" straddles a world of relaxation and horror with an intense minimalist approach which conjures up an imaginary quartet of Phil Niblock, Elaine Radigue, Erik Satie, and Robert Ashley. Their combined approach is like the simplicity and tranquility of a raindrop sliding off a leaf, being absorbed into the earth, then having the earth disappear from erosion leaving you floating in space. This is meditation for your ears. RECOMMENDED! - Chuck Bettis/dmg

KAMPEC DELORES - Earth Mother Sky Father (Poseidon/Musea 003; Japan) Kampec Dolores are a Hungarian avant-rock band with lots of eastern European folk influences as well as more straight-forward rock bits and improvisational influences. The most immediately striking thing about the band are the pretty terrific vocals by Gabi Kenderesi. She, along with guitarist Csaba Hajnoczy, are the main forces within the group, but there are also strong contributions from Arpad Vajdouich bass, Hu Grencso wind instruments and Tamas Olueczky-drums.
"This CD does not fit easily into any pre-existing niche, but as most prog fans have fairly eclectic tastes and often like to experiment with fringe music of diverse types, I feel sure that Kampec Dolores should win many fans over to their addictive hybrid of experimental World/Folk/Prog/Jazz/Art-Rock. Expand your horizons with this enjoyable and interesting CD soon."- Dave Sissons

YUGEN - Labirinto d'Acqua (Altrock 01; Italy) The first album by this Italian/international avant-progressive supergroup, which has been eagerly anticipated. Their stated influences should tell you all you need to know: Satie, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Cage, Reich, Zappa, Henry Cow, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Univers Zero! Very very good stuff for fans of 'rehearsal-intensive, complex avant-progressive rock. "Yugen is a musical project born during autumn of 2004 from an idea by Francesco Zago and Marcello Marinone. Four years after the end of The Night Watch, , Francesco Zago begins thinking about a synthesis between rock (progressive and RIO-style oriented) and chamber music. Thanks to the ideas and fundamental support of Marcello Marinone, the project takes its shape from a few chamber compositions, enriched with electric sounds and a rock rhythm section. The name of the project became Yugen, a japanese word - impossible to translate in its precise meaning - which expresses the aesthetic canon of japanese art, as haiku in poetry or Noh in theatre. Between December of 2004 and January of 2005 the first demo of Yugen was produced. Diego Donadio, formerly drummer of The Night Watch, contributes to the drums arrangements. In February, during an extemporaneous jam session in Tradate, the keyboard player Paolo Botta (Franch TV) and swiss saxophone player Markus Stauss (Spaltklang, Ulterior Lux) joined the group. Then Stephan Brunner, who plays electric bass in Spaltklang, and reed player Peter Schmid (Evan Parker, Vinny Golia) accept to play with Yugen. In the meantime, new compositions come out: Zago writes little acoustic pieces. To satisfy the complexity and richness of the arrangements, other instrumentalist join the band: the percussionist Massimo Mazza, Giuseppe Olivini (OZ, Contrapplugged) plays harpsichord, the classical players Maurizio Fasoli (piano), Elia Mariani (violin) and Marco Sorge (clarinets). Last arrivals, but not less important, the drummer Mattia Signo, Tommaso Leddi (Stormy Six) and U.S. drummer Dave Kerman (Thinking Plague, 5uu's, Present, Blast, Ahvak..). The recordings began in June of 2005 and they continued until January of 2006. During the following months, Udi Koomran (Avhak, Present, Thinking Plague) worked on mixing and mastering." [Altrock]

BILL FRISELL With PAUL MOTIAN/KENNY WHEELER et al - Rambler (ECM 1287; USA) This relatively early set from Bill Frisell is a fine showcase for the utterly unique guitarist. Frisell has the ability to play nearly any extroverted style of music and his humor (check out the date's "Music I Heard") is rarely far below the surface. This particular quintet (with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, tuba player Bob Stewart, electric bassist Jerome Harris and drummer Paul Motian) is not exactly short of original personalities and their outing (featuring seven Frisell compositions) is one of the most lively of all the ones in the ECM catalog. JAN GARBAREK With ERAINER BRUNINGHAUS/BERHARD WEBER/NANA VASCONCELOS et al - I Took Up The Runes (ECM 1419; USA Jan Garbarek soprano and tenor saxophones; Rainer Bruninghaus piano; Eberhard Weber bass; Nana Vasconcelos percussion; Manu Katche drums; Bugge Wesseltoft synthesizer; Ingor Antte Ailu Gaup voice
A more eclectic release than his preceding releases, Jan Garbarek's I Took Up the Runes satisfies listeners who had been more or less impatient for something with some meat and some muscle. Opening with a jazzy cover of Mari Persen's "Gula Gula," made fuller with bass guitar accompaniment that modifies the chord structure of the whole tune, the album next features the five-part "Molde Canticle," which spans from a dreamy esoteric sound to African folk music. Garbarek really wails in places, and it is a welcome surprise -- he should wail more than he does. Synthesizer sounds are starting to become less prominent as well. There is excellent piano work by Rainer Bruninghaus and excellent vocalizing by guest artist Ingor Antte Ailu Gaup. A sign of good things to come. - Marc Allender, AMG

GATEWAY [JOHN ABERCROMBIE/DAVE HOLLAND/JACK DeJOHNETTE] - Gateway (ECM 1061; USA) Guitarist John Abercrombie was one of the stars of ECM in its early days. His playing on this trio set with bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette is really beyond any simple categorization. Abercrombie's improvisations are sophisticated yet, because his sound is rockish and sometimes quite intense (particularly on the nearly 11-minute "Sorcery 1"), there is really no stylistic name for the music. Holland contributed four of the six originals while DeJohnette brought in the other two (one of which was co-written with Abercrombie). The interplay between the three musicians is quite impressive although listeners might find some of the music to be quite unsettling. It takes several listens for one to digest all that is going on, but it is worth the struggle. Recorded March 1975 - Scott Yanow, AMG

KEITH JARRETT/GARY PEACOCK/JACK DeJOHNETTE - Bye Bye Blackbird (ECM 1467; USA) This is the Keith Jarrett Trio's -- featuring bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette -- elegy for their former employer Miles Davis, recorded only 13 days after the maestro's death. The lonely figure in shadow with a horn on the cover contrasts with the joyous spirit of many of the tracks on this CD, yet there is still a ghostly presence to deal with -- and in keeping with Miles' credo, Jarrett's choice of notes is often more purposefully spare than usual. There is symmetry in the organization of the album, with "Bye Bye Blackbird" opening and the trio's equally jaunty "Blackbird, Bye Bye" closing the album, and the interior tracks immediately following the former and preceding the latter are "You Won't Forget Me" and "I Thought About You." The centerpiece of the CD is an 18-and-a-half-minute group improvisation, "For Miles," which after some DeJohnette tumbling around becomes a dirge sometimes reminiscent of Miles' own elegy for Duke Ellington, "He Loved Him Madly." As an immediate response to a traumatic event, Jarrett and his colleagues strike the right emotional balance to create one of their more meaningful albums. - Richard S Ginell, AMG

MARC JOHNSON'S BASS DESIRES With BILL FRISELL/JOHN SCOFIELD/PETER ERSKINE - Second Sights (ECM 1351; USA) The second release by Bass Desires (a quartet consisting of leader/bassist Marc Johnson, drummer Peter Erskine and the guitars of Bill Frisell and John Scofield) is almost the equal of the first. This advanced unit performs eight group originals that cover a wide variety of moods, from introspective, spacy pieces to ones emphasizing fire and passion. Recorded March 1987 - Scott Yanow, AMG

CHARLES LLOYD With BOBO STENSON/ANDERS JORMIN/BILLY HART - The Call (ECM 1522; USA) The Call features the same lineup as Notes From Big Sur (pianist Bobo Stenson and bassist Anders Jormin), save for drummer Billy Hart, who replaces Ralph Peterson. (Lloyd has referred to this group as his "Full Service Orchestra of Love.") While the record documents plenty of stirring musicianship, Lloyd the composer seems to be running low on fresh ideas and distinctive melodies. In sum, The Call is a bit too similar in thrust to his two previous ECM outings. (It's also over 16 minutes longer, which doesn't help.) There are a couple of unexpected twists, however -- like Lloyd's surging, surprising entrance toward the end of "Song," and the quick yet perpetually unsettled tempo of the brief "Imke." The closing Lloyd/Hart duet, "Brother on the Rooftop," is partially based on the second movement of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata. - David R Adler, AMG
CD $12

PAT METHENY - New Chautauqua (ECM 1131; USA) Always exploring side routes even at this early stage, Pat Metheny goes it all alone here, overdubbing himself on electric six- and 12-string guitars, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and 15-string harp guitar. Yet New Chautauqua is basically an indulgence, one where Metheny spins his wheels within the context of the impressionistic ECM ambience, creating pretty sounds but only fleeting streaks of memorable music. The album gets off to a great start on the title track, where Metheny's folk influences come to the fore with a strummed acoustic guitar base and electric guitar overhead. But the lengthy "Long-Ago Child/Fallen Star" drifts aimlessly in a dreamy fashion that only a new age navelgazer could love, and he doesn't grab the listener by the lapels again until the lovely vamp of "Sueuo con Mexico" way down the line. Chalk it up to growing pains. - Richard S Ginell, AMG

This is Motian's debut as a leader. It includes ambitious cuts with guitarist Sam Brown and also features pianist Keith Jarrett and violinist Leroy Jenkins. Recorded November 1972

ENRICO RAVA With JOHN ABERCROMBIE/PALLE DANIELSSON/JON CHRISTENSEN - The Pilgrim And The Stars (ECM 1063; USA) The trumpet of Enrico Rava perfectly fits into the ECM sound. He never gets all that heated, has a healthy respect for the value of space and recalls Miles Davis a bit in spots. Joined by a sparse trio (guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christensen), Rava explores seven of his moody originals and creates thoughtful and introspective music. Recorded June 1975 - Scott Yanow, AMG

L SHANKAR With JAN GARBAREK/ZAKIR HUSSAIN/TRILOK GURTU - Song For Everyone (ECM 1286; USA) Shankar 10-string double violin, drum machine; Jan Garbarek soprano and tenor saxophones; Zakir Hussain tabla, congas; Trilok Gurtu percussion Song For Everyone heralds the return of the groove in Shankar's East-West-minded music, with former Shakti colleague Zakir Hussain on tabla, Trilok Gurtu on percussion, and Shankar's own manipulation of a drum machine tending to the rhythms. The result is a brighter, more outgoing record than its predecessor Vision, veering between Western acoustic and electric grooves and the complex beats churned out by the tabla. Jan Garbarek again shines beams of light on soprano and tenor, engaging Shankar's 10-string double-necked electric violin in some complex interplay on the title track. Some tracks are driven entirely or partially by the drum machine; "Paper Nut" has a particularly infectious revolving pattern. But sometimes Shankar overdoes it; the lengthy "Watching You" has an overly mechanized feeling that can be either mesmerizing or infuriating, depending upon your mood. On another track, "I Know," the Western percussion is gradually swallowed up by the Indian tabla. Fascinating, free-thinking music, beautifully recorded as usual by ECM. - Richard S Ginell, AMG

RALPH TOWNER/EDDIE GOMEZ/JACK DeJOHNETTE - Batik (ECM 1121; USA) Guitarist Ralph Towner (who also plays a bit of piano) teams up with the highly sympathetic bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette for five of his originals on this 1978 date. The music unfolds slowly but logically, and Towner's quiet sound displays a lot of inner heat. Highlights include "Waterwheel" and the 16-minute "Batik." Well worth listening to closely, at a high volume. - Scott Yanow, AMG

NORMA WINSTONE With JOHN TAYLOR/TONY COE - Somewhere Called Home (ECM 1337; USA) Having already recorded for ECM as a member of Azimuth -- the band also included her husband, pianist John Taylor, and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler -- it seemed only a matter of time before Norma Winstone would contribute her fine and very original vocal talents to a solo disc for the label; hence listeners have 1986's Somewhere Called Home. It's not only a watermark of Winstone's career but, in the long line of modern vocal outings released since the romantic vocal tradition of Fitzgerald and Vaughan ended with free jazz and fusion, the disc stands out as one most original yet idyllic of vocal jazz recordings. Joined by Taylor and British saxophone legend Tony Coe, Winstone imparts equal measures of intimacy and drama to the proceedings. Sidestepping the noose that the standard vocal canon can impose, she reinvigorates the tradition with adaptations of material by such unlikely figures as Egberto Gismonti, Ralph Towner, Wheeler, and Bill Evans. Her cogent and stunning mix of economical phrases, tasteful embellishments, and airy vocal tones transform these songs into standards for the modern age. Even her go at two old nuggets, Arlen and Mercer's infrequently covered "Out of This World" and Vincent Youmans' "Tea for Two," produce rarefied results -- glowing orbs of sound and lovingly forlorn slices of lyricism. Think of Helen Merrill's similarly delicate voice matched up with a bit of Blossom Dearie's coy sweetness and you get part of the picture (both of these singers have done equal justice to the standards covered here). The rest comes from Winstone's own very original interpretive skills and the excellent and equally tempered sentiment heard in both Coe and Taylor's playing. A must for fans looking for something as cozy as a golden age chanteuse, but without all the gymnastic scatting and carbon copy ways of many a contemporary jazz singer. - Stephen Cook, AMG

In the 1970s, he recorded a string of innovative albums for Island Records which utilized the talents of such leading musicians as Hugh Hopper, Maurice Pert, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve and Klaus Schulze, fusing his percussion talents with jazz, electronic and classical to create an ambient form of music all of his own. His music has been used by the Royal Ballet. His first Island album, Floating Music was recorded with the band Come to the Edge and gains its first European CD release with this reissue. 'Poker Dice' and 'One Way' were for used by Nicholas Roeg in the soundtrack of the David Bowie film The Man Who Fell to Earth."

Extensive booklet with liner notes & fully restored artwork. Originally released in 1973 for Island Records, The Man from the East was the soundtrack to a fascinating theatre-piece Yamash'ta presented in Paris and London in 1972. STOMU YAMASHTA [YAMASH'TA] GO With KLAUS SCHULZE/STEVE WINWOOD/MICHAEL SHRIEVE et al - Go (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2081; UK) "First-ever UK CD release for this classic album from the master percussionist & ambient musician -- remastered from the original tapes. Extensive booklet with liner notes & fully restored artwork. GREASY TRUCKERS PARTY [V.A. With HAWKWIND/MAN/BRINSLEY SCHWARZ/MAGIC MICHAEL] - Greasy Truckers Party: London Roundhouse February 13th 1972 [3 CD set] (EMI 5032352; UK) "The Greasy Truckers Party, as a double-LP set, was the Great White Whale of many a music lover's collecting efforts in the 1970s and '80s -- always talked of being sighted by others and ever-eluding the best efforts. But here it is, on three very fully-packed CDs, minus the Henry Cow and Gong cuts, but now with the COMPLETE SETS of Man, Brinsley Schwarz, and Hawkwind (with Magic Michael & Friends thrown in for good measure), a legendary performance on a legendary night for each band. For those unaware, in the world of British underground rock, the Greasy Truckers Party, as it was billed at the London Roundhouse on February 13, 1972, looms about as large as the Monterey International Pop Festival does in American rock lore; it wasn't the biggest gig ever played by the bands involved, but for reasons of exposure, and resulting word-of-mouth, and the excerpted live album that followed, it came to define what they were capable of, and who they were. Man, who'd shown a lot of promise on their early records leading up to this event, ripped the envelope with the show they put on that night. Hawkwind, who'd enjoyed some recording success and made a big splash at the previous year's Glastonbury Fayre, was boasting a partly new lineup, with a rhythm section comprised of ex-Rocking Vicar Lemmy on bass and Simon King on drums -- they overcame some initial technical problems to do a live set that, despite being abbreviated in earlier releases of this performance, loomed large in their legend for more than a decade. And included in that set on this release is their first-ever performance of 'Silver Machine,' the song that -- with Lemmy shifted to lead vocals a few months later -- would propel the band to the number three spot on the U.K. singles charts. And then there was Brinsley Schwarz, who were in many ways the most improbable act on this bill -- where the other two groups were known for doing extended jams, running as much as 20 minutes at a clip, the Brinsleys did short songs mostly based on American country music and other traditional forms; indeed, their opening number, 'Country Girl,' sounds like a lost outtake from the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and is about as far removed as can be from the heavy electric jams of Man that preceded them, or the space rock extravaganzas of Hawkwind, who followed. Magic Michael, who fills out the last ten minutes of disc two, was a London hippie eccentric who was sort of the UK's answer to David Peel -- a future collaborator with Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies of the Damned, he's an acquired musical taste, but a startling cultural artifact of the time, and as long as his presence didn't keep any music off of the collection, you'll be glad that he's here. The packaging on this set is excellent as well, re-creating poster art and advertising and offering biographical information even on the acts that didn't get to perform (there was a power failure) or whose sets, interrupted by hecklers and fights, proved unusable. One couldn't hope or ask for more, 35 years after the fact."

THE TUNEFUL TROLLEY - Island In The Sky (Now Sounds 06; UK) "Discovered and championed by Jay And The Americans, The Tuneful Trolley were a psych-pop sextet with a knack for writing and performing solid Beatles-esque rock. With a sizable following in their home base of Long Island, New York, The Tuneful Trolley released Island In The Sky in 1968 to national indifference, this despite containing all the elements of an instant smash. Island In The Sky is a glorious atoll, indeed, landscaped with fuzz guitars, oboes, melodic Beach Boys-esque harmonies, and garage pop sensibilities. All this from a band in their mid-teens! The lads wrote most of their material, and recorded their own tracks! This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print Capitol LP is supplemented by rare Mono single mixes, none of which have ever been issued on CD. The 16-page color booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members. Produced by Sandy Yaguda of Jay And The Americans. Remastered from the original master tapes!"
CD $18

HUMAN LEAGUE/THE FUTURE - The Golden Hour Of The Future (Black Melody 05; UK) "Remastered for 2008, The Golden Hour Of The Future is a treasure trove of tracks from The Human League and their earlier incarnation, The Future, dating back to their early musical experiments in 1977. Predating the Reproduction-era League, there's a wealth of synthesizer instrumentals, abstract soundscapes and embryonic pop from the boys who launched a thousand imitators and whose influence is still heard today. Since the limited release on Richard X's Black Melody label in 2003, remastering technology has advanced, allowing for better quality recordings to be recovered from the original master (cassette) tapes."
CD $20

BEACH BOYS - Beach Boys And The Satan [DVD] (Zeit 114; UK) "Most people imagine California during the '60s to be an idyllic, peaceful and highly creative place in which some of the greatest music of the '60s and beyond was created. In many ways this is true, but there was also a dark undercurrent that took hold during the late '60s and it stretched out and infiltrated what many people considered to be 'America's Band,' The Beach Boys, when drummer Dennis Wilson became involved with a cult led by Charles Manson called 'The Family.' This documentary details the Beach Boys' rise to success into context with rarely-seen footage of the band, while it exposes the Summer of Love's darkest side and investigates the connections between some of the most controversial characters of that period (Anton La Vey, Kenneth Anger, and Brian Wilson) and their connection to the Manson Family. The film includes interviews with Kim Fowley, Don Was and the creative force behind the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson. The film, which was originally released in 1997, has been unavailable for some time and this release on DVD will be highly anticipated." NTSC, all-region.
DVD $16

HOYT AXTON - My Griffin Is Gone (Omni 119; Australia) "Today Hoyt Axton is perhaps best known as the writer of such great songs as 'Greenback Dollar' (The Kingston Trio), 'The Pusher' (Steppenwolf) and 'Joy To The World' (Three Dog Night). Among the best of his records would be My Griffin Is Gone, his 1969 psyche-folk opus. Running the gamut from pastoral musings like 'Way Before The Time Of Towns' to harrowing anti-war ruminations ('Beelzebub's Laughter') and moving meditations on drug abuse ('Snowblind Friend') the album was written and recorded during a time of personal hardship and LSD experimentation. This newly expanded edition features four mind-blowing tracks only available on 45 before and eight previously-unreleased tracks! Remastered in 2008 from the original Columbia master tapes with exclusive notes and rare photos."
