Hope for Happiness!

Post-election Greens! We're OVERJOYED that the results of our U.S. election will lead to an uprooting of that cesspool which drowned our seat of government under the outgoing looters, ..er, administration, of our country, and all its corrupt appointed civil-servant deadwood.
Which is not to say that the same external "private sector" forces, that enjoyed such unabated sway the last eight years - under the worst president EVER in our lifetimes - won't succeed in working their poison on the incoming crowd. Let's pray the forthright intelligence and open candor of our new president will help the healing and make the U.S. a land to be respected, and not feared and hated - by its own citizens, or by the many peaceful people around the world.
We know it will not be easy for Obama - indeed, any elected official - to fix the many problems that this past administration has wrought, but we are optimistic that things are already moving in the right direction, making the necessary changes.
Just remember, our involvement in the course of the nation and the world doesn't begin and end on Election Day. It's all of us that must help steer government - every day - and not just leave public officials to do it on their own. We've seen that result too many times over and again.
The scenes of folks around the country dancing and singing in the streets is something we will not soon forget!

(what's so funny about)

Peace, Love, and Understanding ..from Bruce, Manny, Chuck, Bret, Joe, Mike & Jacob @ DMG

New on Psi!

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH With DANIEL D'AGARO/TRISTAN HONSINGER - Friulian Sketches (2008) (Psi 08.07; UK) ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH (piano), DANIEL D'AGARO (clarinet), TRISTAN HONSINGER (cello). This spontaneous chamber music establishes further advances in the development of improvisation as compositional process. Recorded in the prestigious Arte Suono Studios, Udine. "As you taste this dish, you'll be perhaps so engaged to query about the ingredients. At any given time you could lay this musical output equally at the feet of Jazz, Classical, or 20th Century composed music. But the ingredients won't explain why it's so delicious - it's the spices, seasoning, and flair of the chefs." (From the notes by Ben Young.) 67 minutes.

JOHN EDWARDS - Volume (2008) (Psi 08.0; UK) The first solo CD by John Edwards, increasingly recognised as one of the most significant players of his generation. Recorded in splendid detail by John Wall, these 9 tracks are a very fresh take on the possibilities of unamplified double bass playing, making it a major entry in the solo bass literature. "This solo recording is an unusual and rare offering that comes from a musician who performs every day, every week, and appears on over 100 records. It's a selection of sounds, melodies, and gestures from this characteristic spectrum, combined with behaviours belonging to a virtuoso, and with those that can only be learned from persistent jigsawing or by illuminating and fusing all user manuals. (From the notes by Marek Tuszynski.) 53 minutes.

RAY WARLEIGH With TONY MARSH - Rue Victor Masse (2004) (Psi 08.08; UK) "What I play is absolutely unpremeditated. There are no soundscapes or pictures in my head. But I like melody very much, and I've thought about it a lot." After several attempts to make relatively lavish studio productions we agreed that the music here had the spirit that Ray wanted regardless, or perhaps because, of the absolutely basic way in which it was recorded. Unbelievably, this is only the second album made under his leadership - the first was made in 1968! His consistently fine playing can be heard in duo with long-term associate Tony Marsh, whose drumming just gets better and better.

New label from Poland: Multikulti!

NEW FRACTURE QUARTET [TIM DAISY/NATE McBRIDE/JAIMIE BRANCH/DAVE MILLER] - 1000 Lights (Multikulti Project 04; EEC) The New Fracture Quartet is an ensemble organized by Tim Daisy and serves as a showcase for his own compositions. The group brings together long-time collaborator and veteran bassist Nate Mcbride, along with two of Chicago's strongest young musicians: Jaimie Branch on trumpet and Dave Miller on guitar and electronics.

DRAGONS 1976 [ARAM SHELTON/JASON AJEMIAN/TIM DAISY] - Dragons 1976 (Multikulti Project 02; EEC) Dragons 1976 is the horn bass drum trio of ram Shelton on alto saxophone, Jason Ajemian on double bass, and Tim Daisy on drums and percussion. . The name came from the year in which all three were born. The three met in Chicago in the early 00's as all were drawn to the city as a place to develop their music. All highly active in the creative music scene there, Dragons 1976 formed in a natural way after playing together for several years and released their first album On Cortez on Locust music in 2003. Largely improvisational, the music of Dragons 1976 focuses on their individuality as musicians while using composed parts to guide the form and structure. While rooted in and influenced by music of the jazz idiom, the music of Dragons 1976 is never bound to it's tradition, as each of the members is influenced by a wide array of styles including minimalism, folk, rock, electronic and free improvisation. Rooted in jazz, their music is strongly melodic; with no set chord progressions, it is allowed to freely find its own space. Dragons 1976 focus on playing as a group, making songs that follow a path from start to finish, and approaching emotional points with subtlety.

WACLAW ZIEMPIEL/WOJTEK TRACZYK/ROBERT RASZ TRIO - The Light (Multikulti Project 03; EEC) Despite the fact that Waclaw Ziempiel, Wojtek Traczyk and Robert Rasz belong to the new generation of improvisers with sound academic backgrounds, their search for new music forms does not only reflect their interest in formally complex European concert music. Their music fascinates first and foremost through the emotional and rhythmic power of jazz.
Unrestrained and at the same time sensuous bass clarinet is reminiscent of John Surman or Michael Pilz whose trademark was the right punch line and mood. It is truly brave and surprising that the trio decided to do without any harmonic instrument. What may be obvious to a pianist or guitar player is still quite a challenge fo an improvising clarinetist. This proves how confident and convincing Zimpel's craftsmanship is. It is admittedly greatly supported by his musical partners, the drummer Robert Rasz and the bass player Wojtek Traczyk, all three of them make a perfect tuned rhythmic section.
Their intensive, interactive style dominates the course of improvisation and creates a homogenous sound unimpaired by the absence of harmonic instruments. A good band that can only wish for ample time to work on their musical ideas. - Theo Jorgensmann

A RARE Revolutionary Ensemble album finally on CD!

REVOLUTIONARY ENSEMBLE [LEROY JENKINS/SIRONE [NORRIS JONES]/JEROME COOPER] - Revolutionary Ensemble: Live At Moosham Castle (Enja 2148; Germany) Featuring Leroy Jenkins on violin, flute & kalimba, Sirone on bass & flute and Jerome Cooper on drums, flute, balaphon, piano & chiramiya. Straddling contemporary composition and free-jazz, the Revolutionary Ensemble recorded five great albums in the seventies - each for a different label - only one of which has been previously reissued on CD, 'The Psyche' (now on Mutable).
This CD is a reissue of their 1978 album (originally an LP in the U.S. on the Inner City label) recorded live on August 18th, 1977 at Moosham Castle in Austria. This live set was their last recording before going their separate ways until they reformed for a Vision Fest set - and new studio album - in 2005, more than a quarter century later. This disc is comprised of four pieces, each in splendid in different ways. "Clear Spring" features a rather poignant central bass line with Leroy's distinctive violin crying sublimely on top. This piece is quite bluesy with Leroy's haunting violin playing most lyrically above the stark rhythm team. "March 4-1" opens with a ritualistic balaphon groove. This piece builds slowly and gets more intense as it with some powerful free violin from the late, great Leroy Jenkins. The rhythm team is also in fine form as they reach for the heavens. "Chicago" has a sort of "ghost trance" like intro with Jerome on piano. This piece is free yet focused with some intricate interplay between the violin, bowed bass and piano. Eventually the trio hits their stride when they get into a cosmic groove midway through this piece. The final piece is titled "Revolutionary Ensemble" and begins with three flutes, circling around one another. This piece has that superb, organic flow that feels just right. Each player soon picks up their main instrument, one at a time until we find our way into some minimal charted territory with some fine mallet work from Jerome. This entire disc is a particularly strong date that I wish never ended. Soothing salve for troubled spirits indeed. - BLG

DAVE FOX GROUP With BRUCE EISENBEIL et al - Home Again (Konnex 5215; Germany) Featuring Bruce Eisenbeil on guitar, Dave Fox on keyboards, Pat Lawrence on bass and John Marc Ryan Dale on drums. Keyboard wiz, Dave Fox, has collaborated with Eugene Chadbourne & Frank Gratkowski, is on the staff of Greensboro College and is presently finishing up his Doctorate at Columbia University. Bruce Eisenbeil remains one of best out/jazz guitarists around and I look forward to any disc that he is involved with. Bruce's review next week.

GRANT CALVIN WESTON With ELLIOTT LEVIN/WEASEL WALTER et al - Nassira (Amulet 028; USA) Grant Calvin Weston has blazed a harmolodic, funkadelic trail through modern jazz. This record is a culmination of recordings made on the West Coast and his hometown of Philadelphia. Weston puts his Midas touch on electronics and acoustic instruments that blow the socks off any jazz-rock poser out there. Listen to the man who funked-up Ornette Coleman in the 1970s. Featured Artists: Grant Calvin Weston: drums, trumpet, more; Walter Weasel: guitar; Dion Pac: guitar; Jeff Monjack: guitar; Tom Spiker: bass; Elliott Levin: saxophones, flute; Brian Marsella: keyboards.
This is mostly a solo effort by drum master, Calvin Weston, with a few guests on each piece. "Earth Mover" features some powerful drumming with spaced-out Arp synth swirls. A truly colossal sound! "Space Boy" erupts with more earth-shaking drums, crazy synth, sly trumpet and fractured guitar from West coast drum wiz Weasel Walter. "Pop Goes the Weasel" is an explosive fusion treat with wailing guitar by Jeff Monjack and slamming jazz/rock/funk drums & synth from Calvin. "Let's Funk" is a hilarious P-Funk-like groove tune with old-time funky synth squiggles and more mind-blowing drums. The final three tracks feature Calvin's great Philly quartet with Elliott Levin on saxes & flute, Brian Marsella on electric piano, Tom Spiker on bass and Calvin on drums. These is also jazz/rockin' at its best with inspired playing from all four players. "Area 51" is an epic-length piece with ghost-like vocals at the beginning before the groove sets in. Elliott's echoplexed flute and vocalese soar above the slamming rhythm team. Just incredible! This nearly 16-minute piece is a tour-de-force and well-worth the price of admission! Don't get me wrong, I dig this entire disc, but a complete disc by this incredible quartet would make this one of the best discs of the year. Still pretty close, either way. - BLG

MICHAEL MARCUS - Lotus Symphony (Not Two 807; EEC) Featuring Michael Marcus on B-flat clarinet, Antoine Roney on tenor sax, John Austria on piano, Radu ben Judah or Rashaan Carter on bass and Jay Rosen or Taru Alexander on drums. Downtown multi-reeds wiz, Michael Marcus, has been concentrating on B-flat clarinet only on his past few discs. This is good thing since Mr. Marcus just gets better and better on his clarinet. Starting with "As Always, Our Blessings", Michael plays exquisitely and spiritually with strong piano, bass and drums around him. Somewhere in between Andy Statman and Ben Goldberg, Michael plays his clarinet most expressively, his solo here is just right. "Seal Rock - Bird Rock" is done as a duo and a trio with the great Jay Rosen (Trio X) on drums. Jay's cymbal playing is especially fine on both versions. Again, Michael's sly clarinet solo is something go behold. Three of these pieces feature a different rhythm team who are also truly fine. On "Peace People Theme", Michael is joined by Antoine Roney on tenor, both men swirl around one another in righteous tandem with a strong solo from Antoine. I dig the delicate sound of "Elypsis" with a long, inspired, playful (soprano sax-like) solo from Michael. The title track, "Lotus Symphony" is another calm yet inspired piece with a most enchanting theme and superb solo from Mr. Marcus. Over the past decade we've seen/heard more folks concentrating on the clarinet. On "Lotus Symphony", we find that Michael Marcus is one of the best clarinetists around. - BLG

SIMON JERMYN'S TROT A MOUSE With CHRIS SPEED/LOREN STILLMAN/SEAN CARPIO/JOACHIM BADENHORST - Trot A Mouse (Fresh Sound NT 318; EEC) Simon Jermyn's Trot A Mouse features Loren Stillman - alto sax, Chris Speed - tenor sax / clarinet, Joachim Badenhorst - bass clarinet, Simon Jermyn - electric bass / baritone guitar, Sean Carpio - drums. A collection Jermyn's [Red Rocket, Hatebreath, Togetherness] original compositions wherein influences abound: Folky melodies, grooves in changing meters, soundscapes and some unexpected changes in direction. This CD is certainly one of the most important (and listenable) releases to come out of Ireland in recent years.

NO-NECK BLUES BAND [aka NNCK] - Clomein (Locust 113; USA) "Locust is proud to announce the release of Clomeim, the new studio album from New York's No-Neck Blues Band. Clomeim is an evolution, a vital document of change in The No-Neck Blues Band's 15+ years of para-musical activity. This pivotal recording is a creative distillation of the collective at a new and startling saturation point. For three rainy days in March 2007, the seven-headed hydra that is NNCK holed up in Black Dirt Studios, their newly outfitted recording studio in the foothills of upstate New York. With a discipline and a clarity of vision they've rarely displayed before, the collective channeled all of their energies into hours of recording live, real-time improvisation. After months spent sculpting and recasting the raw material, Clomeim emerged -- a distinct whole, recalling in its parts the communal howl of Algarnas Tradgard, the dead spirit channeling of Geino Yamashiro Gumi, the glacial shadowplay of Heresie era Univers Zero, and krautrock zenith Faust at their finest hour. Clomeim is that rare hybrid -- a rock exterior with a cryptic, experimental core; a dense groover and a burning, exploratory psychedelic grimoire for the new dark ages."

HENRY FLYNT & C C HENNIX - The Dharma Warriors (Locust 114; USA) "The Dharma Warriors was the elemental guitar/drum rock concoction of Henry Flynt & C.C. Hennix. In 1983, the pair hooked up in Woodstock at Hennix's rented house and let freedom ring with two lengthy boombox recordings. 'Warriors of the Dharma' and 'Mount Fuji on My Mind' are classics of unrefined blues boogie and unhemmed stoner rock."

HENRY FLYNT - C Tune (Locust 03; USA) Henry Flynt is a seasoned tourist of The World Of The Other Ear and C Tune is his ringing, psychedelic meditation on/from the cosmos. Call it a sonic postcard or call it late night head music or even call it ecstatic Minimalism if you have to. On this forty seven + minute foray, our man Flynt takes his electrified fiddle and blends his droning sonic calisthenics with lonesome swing melodies and high decibel screech to the somnambulistic playing of his expat mathematician pal Mr/Mrs. C.C. ACID MOTHERS GONG [ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE With DAEVID ALLEN/GILLI SMYTH et al] - Live @ Uncon 06 [DVD] (Voiceprint DVD46 VPT; UK) "When the Acid Mothers Gong band manifested in 2003, it was yet another story in the evolving history of Gong, which started in 1968 in Paris. Daevid Allen had returned there after being refused entry to the UK for visa reasons when on the way to the Edinburgh Festival with Soft Machine, so he put his energy into Gong, which quickly came to the forefront of the avant garde. Paris was heating up for the revolution of workers and students against the government, and Daevid, with Gilli Smyth, had to flee as revolutionaries. They were in danger of being arrested for playing music to the students. After a disastrous trip to Morocco, they returned to Paris in 1969 to play at the Amougies Festival. They made several albums, and lived communally, which was an inspiration to that generation, and in 1971 Actuel magazine voted them the best alternative band in France. By l975, the band had moved to the UK and both Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen had left to pursue solo careers with their own bands such as Mother Gong, New York Gong, Gong Maison, Planet Gong and eventually Acid Mothers Gong. As Steve Hillage said 'nobody ever left,' and the history of Gong has been ever-changing, like a river. Acid Mothers are a collection of improvising musicians with formidable technical skills and a philosophical stance that has placed them at the tip of the Japanese underground iceberg. With more than 100 CDs to their name, they have a massive cult following internationally and are well known for never having played the same song the same way twice! They were the perfect choice, allowing Gilli and Daevid to go where few have ventured. Daevid and Gilli recorded an album in Australia with Acid Mothers in 2003, toured Japan with them a couple of times, and played the set (which is now this DVD) at the 'Unconventional Gong Gathering' in Amsterdam in November 2006. The recordings from that event were mixed and mastered by Harry Williamson at Spring Studios in Melbourne, with assistance from Daevid Allen, and Harry also did the psychedelic video edit, and created special effects which complement the music perfectly. This DVD is of a magical combination of musicians coming together to push the boundaries of improvised music -- the line up is Daevid Allen, Kawabata Makoto, Gilli Smyth, Higashi Hiroshi, Yoshida Tatsuya and Atsushi Tsuyama with special guest Josh Pollock from the University of Errors."

KAZUO IMAI TRIO - Blood [2 CD set] (Doubt 124/125; Japan) The trio of Imai Kazuo - guitar / Ito Atsuhiro - optron / Suzuki Manabu - electronics ; have created a unique blend of compelling improv that is thought provoking and dare I say "rocking" with raw nervous energy the way early downtown NY music sounded to me when I first heard it. When I put on this disc, a big smile emerged on my face and tarantism crept over me from the very first sound to the very last. "Blood" keeps the energy high, physical, and flowing; even with the moments of space for more subdued solos. The DVD half of this release is beautifully document of the making of "Blood", which displays a spectacular world of reminiscent of a bioluminescence creature, let us say an electric eel; since the optron is like the musical equivalent. For those who don't already know, the optron is a very unique instrument created by Ito (previously heard on recordings with Otomo Yoshihide) which is basically a flourescent light played like a guitar. This thing is dynamically brutal and visually awe-inspiring (epilectics beware) that creates an frantic electro-shock therapy sound. Imai's cv boasts collaborations with Taj Mahal Travellers, Takayanagi Masayuki's New Direction, as well as playing with Lee Konitz Irene Schweizer, and Arthur Doyle; with his vast experience you hear open direction in his guitar playing. Suzuki carves his own niche with his handmade electronics of his own creation rounding this trio off with a perfect blend of uniqueness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! -Chuck Bettis/dmg

NAMBA JAZZ [YOSHIGAKI YASUHIRO/YAMAMOTO SEIICHI] - The Gun (Doubt 123; Japan) Namba Jazz is the improvisation duet by Yoshigaki Yasuhiro (drums, percussion) and Yamamoto Seiichi (guitar, misc.). "Namba" of Namba Jazz means not an area in Osaka but means Namba walking. And "Jazz" of Namba Jazz is not jazz but is actually Jazu.Namba Jazz has performed gigs 4 times in Japan. This CD is consisted great 10 tunes what selected in 3 gigs. The guitar playing by Yamamoto has a wide variety of the sound. He keeps a spark of genius and has never sounds the cliche of improvisation. He is genius for music absolutely. The drum and percussion master, Yoshigaki make the texture of Namba Jazz sound and he seems to look beyond Yamamoto's intimate feelings. His miraculous Fill-in or momentum of musical scene changes reflect his versatile in improvised music. Each of their various musical projects and groups, ROVO, PARA, Rashinban, Omoide Hatoba, Orquesta Nudge! Nudge!, Vincent Atmicus, Altered States, ex-Boredoms, ex-Modern Choki Chokis, etc.., are innumerable in this space, and what's more, they challenge to create the original sound. We would like you to listen the front line of improvised music, unrivaled sound of Namba Jazz !!
"Featuring Yamamoto Seiichi on guitar & harmonica and Yoshigaki Yasuhiro on drums & percussion and recorded live at three gigs at the Shinjuku Pit-Inn in Tokyo and Shin-Bi in Kyoto. Yamamoto was an original member of the Boredoms and has recorded a number of fine solo discs since leaving with two on Tzadik. Yoshigaki used to play in Altered States and was the drummer for Soup with Bill Laswell & Otomo Yoshihide. This is a particularly strong and diverse duo and this disc is a well-recorded duo offering. Although it often sounds as if it was improvised on the spot, both musicians work well together and play through various styles and genres. Jazz, rock, surf, noise, Beefheartian spastic rhythmic schemes, yet always tight and focused.. On each piece they appear to deal with different structures or jams.Although much of this intense and occasionally over-the-top, there is just enough melodic or more restrained sections to keep the balance right. Yamamoto pulls off a most blistering guitar solo on "To My Disbelief" that is almost too much, but since it is just under 10 minutes, it is not too long but just about the right length. Nice to hear some sublime acoustic guitar and somber drums on "So True" and quick yet restrained jazz-like guitar on "Somersault". There are a great deal on unexpected twists and turns and changes in directions, but most of all everything seems to work on some level no matter where they sail or soar." - BLG

JUSTADUO [MACHIKO OZAWA/JUSTIN HINES] - Vertical Voyage (Justaduo 01; Japan) Justaduo is Julliard trained violinist Machiko Ozawa and Justin Hines on percussion. On their debut titled "Vertical Voyage", they give us a trip around the world while reaching for the sun. Together they create a neo-gypsy groove that has your head bobbing, your feet tapping and your mind at ease. Ozawa's violin (and tap dancing, at least in live setting, when I saw them play at The Stone) accompanied by Hines varied worldly percussion arsenal gives this disc a unique flavor that takes traditional melodies and stretches them out a few feet, giving the listener a chance to hear them a bit differently. What takes the academic edge off this recording is the sheer DIY element, you can tell it is just two musicians in a room, having fun. Plus, there are some surprises that throw you for a loop; such as "Rondo ala Alien" where Machiko applies some ring modulated flange to her violin to give the alien a voice. Honestly, I think what strikes me most about this disc is that it reminds me of some of the great street music heard through out the subway trains here and around the globe. RECOMMENDED! - Chuck Bettis/dmg

DEEP LISTENING BAND [PAULINE OLIVEROS/STUART DEMPSTER/DAVID GAMPER] - Then & Now Now & Then: Celebrating 20 Years [2 LP set] (Taiga 05; USA) The Deep Listening Band is an improvisational group founded in 1988 by Pauline Oliveros with members David Gamper and Stuart Dempster. Now, 20 years later, the trio celebrate an anniversary of improvisation, innovation and commitment with their first-ever vinyl release. This vinyl-only document contains four side-long tracks, one reissued and three previously-unreleased. "Cannery Row" was originally available on the Troglodyte's Delight (1990) album and captures the band in Tarpaper Cave, which Dempster recalls as "an old limestone quarry near Rosendale, New York that had lovely dripping water sounds and Valhalla-like mists." The previously-unreleased tracks were gathered from three separate live performances at the Sounds Like Now Festival, Sound Exchange American Composers Forum, and Engine27, a 16-channel installation of special speakers. The audio was mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500. The records come packaged in a custom-designed slipcover and a jacket with doublewide spines. The slipcover features two exquisite photographs and is dual-finished with a gloss front and matte back. The jacket is printed on a cardboard brown stock with the pocket flooded green and features three rich essays including: an introduction by David Felton, a short history by Dempster and information about the Expanded Instrument System (EIS) from Oliveros

PLAYER PIANO 7: CONLON NANCARROW - Nancarrow Studies Vol. 4: 42-48 (MDG 645 1407; Germany) "Rarity seekers, this is for you! On volume 7 of his highly ambitious series featuring works for player piano, Jurgen Hocker presents yet another world premiere with Conlon Nancarrow's 'Studies for Player Piano No. 45c', heard here for the first time on an original Ampico player piano. The first recordings of Nancarrow's compositions on original instruments were produced in Mexico in 1977. At the time, this American citizen living in self-imposed exile had completed the 'Studies' through No. 41. A later recording with the other studies in 1988 suffered from the poor condition of the instruments, resulting in a discographic gap that only now has been filled. Elements of jazz music run like a red thread through the three 'Studies No. 45'. First there is a 'limping' boogie-woogie bass with greatly modified jazz melodies, with Nancarrow himself terming this bass the 'spastic rhythm'. Then he punches a slow blues with extremely intricate time relations on the paper roll of the player piano. He concluded by drawing on a technique employed by the American composer Henry Cowell; after a couple of fast chromatic glissandi beyond rendering by the hand are heard, most of the tones are suddenly muffled."

PETER REHBERG [PITA] - Work For GV 2004-2008 (Editions Mego 092; Austria) Peter Rehberg (aka Pita) is a composer and performer of electronic audio works, and also the founder of the Editions Mego label. His collaboration with the Paris-based puppeteer and choreographer Gisele Vienne began in 2001 with the production of the DACM piece ShowroomDummies, followed by Stereotypie in 2003. In 2004, Vienne started to direct under her own name and began to work on pieces collaborating on text with U.S. author, Dennis Cooper. This CD is a document of selected audio parts of all Gisele Vienne productions made between 2004-2008, except for the epic Kindertotenlieder, whose audio material was presented on the various KTL releases in 2006 and 2007. The range here is vast -- from the upfront noise excess of the I Apologize (2004) tracks to the lonely synth passages which were used in Une Belle Enfant Blonde (2005), and the sad coda used for Jerk, which began as a radio play for Radio France Culture in 2007, before being adapted for stage in 2008. The opening "Murder Version" is a version of the recording of "Meurtre" by Catherine Robbe-Grillet and Jonathan Capdevielle, which was released as a single-sided 12" vinyl in 2005, and is to be considered as a tribute to the Alain Robbe-Grillet film Glissements Progressifs Du Plaisir (1974). Although this material was intended for consumption in a theatrical setting, it has been edited with domestic use in mind, ultimately representing that grey zone where puppetry, literature, contemporary theatre and dance, visual art, and extreme computer music meet

BERND ALOIS ZIMMERMANN - Requiem For A Young Poet [H-SACD] (Cybele 860501; Germany) [This is a HYBRID SACD, which means it will play in any ordinary DC player!] "The Requiem for a Young Poet, a lingual for speakers, soprano and boss soli, three choirs, orchestra, jazz combo, organ, and electronic sounds, to texts from various poets, features and news reports, is a late masterpiece of its composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918-1970). In the piece, Zimmermann, one of Germany's leading composers of the post-World War II era, arrives at a totality: a summation of his own biography and also a summation of the intellectual situation of his lifetime, the 50 or so years between the October Revolution and the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet troops. The Requiem, written principally between 1967 and 1969, is the sprawling realization of a grand oratorio project which had preoccupied Zimmermann since the mid-1950s, as well as the most intense incarnation of his 'pluralistic' way of musical thinking. At the time of its premiere, the Requiem could be compared to no other work. In our age, when cross-boundary explorations are quite familiar to us and many works no longer neatly fit into the categories of 'oratorio', 'cantata' or 'radio art', Zimmermann's 'lingual' seems all the more relevant. In an introductory text written for the premiere of his Requiem, the composer emphasized that while working on the piece, he had not thought in terms of cultivating a concrete artistic personality, but rather in imagining how the young poet himself would present to listeners the preceding fifty years and all of its multiplicity, seen from his own intellectual, historical and linguistic perspective and thus ours. Zimmermann arrived at the decision to use his own life span as the foundation of his Requiem at a rather late stage in the process and after varied earlier drafts. Although the composer listed the years of composition as 1967 to 1969, the Requiem should be seen in the context of larger thematic concerns which Zimmermann had been developing for some fifteen years and which found expression in many works leading up to, and stretching beyond, the Requiem. For this SACD recording, Zimmermann's own recommendation for the spatial distribution of the 250 or so participants was followed, which means that the three choirs were arranged in front of the auditorium (choir I), on the left respectively on the right (choir III) and behind the auditorium (choir II). The eight-track tape compiled by Zimmermann in 1969 has been painstakingly restored, so that the recordings of Papandreou, Hitler, Ribbentrop, and all others are again heard as they should be. The eight channels of sound heard on this SACD recording of the concert on 23 June 2005 in the Concertgebouw Haarlem (The Netherlands), were reproduced per the composer's intentions, via eight loudspeakers arranged throughout the hall. This SACD is the first surround sound recording of the Zimmermann Requiem. Owners of a home theatre system can thus enjoy the Requiem even outside the concert hall, as Zimmermann had originally conceived."

SALVATORE SCIARRINO - Storie Di Altre Storie (W&W 144; Germany) The music contained on this cd, to put quite simply, makes me think of Goblin getting together with Ennio Morricone to do a soundtrack for a Frederico Fellini film. "Storie Di Altre Storie" contains compositions for voice, accordion, and orchestra. Ghostly operatic vocals by Sonia Turchetta and masterful accordion by Teodoro Anzellotti that assist the WDR Sinfonieorchester Koln to realize Scriarrino's vision of worlds between worlds or should I say Stories Of Other Stories. Here Salvatore acts as an academic griot, contributing to the great tradition of story tellers of all kinds by adding his flare to each story told. For me, two of the stand out tracks are "Efebo con Radio" and "come senza tempa" (don't get me wrong, the entire disc is very good. It is these two tracks that play a defining role for the feel for the 6 compositions on this cd). The opening track, "Efebo con Radio", Scriannio describes in the liner notes as being inspired by flipping through the radio as a little boy, the sounds of jumping through the different radio stations at night, with the static, silence, and other eerie ethereal tones. Through out this auditory experience, both fortissimo and pianissimo are carefully implemented in a creative and effective way, allowing Scriarrino to incorporate a bit of wow and flutter for acoustic instruments. On "come senza tempo" he incorporates melodies from three composers; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Guillaume de Machaut, and Domenico Scarlatti, highlighting their relevance in modern composition. All in all, this sense of musical telephone has provoked repeated listens and in depth study from this listener. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! - Chuck Bettis / DMG

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - Not Even Close (Stilll OPV 01; EEC) This is the first release in a new "P.V. Presents" series, and the Brussels-based producer/avant-garde guitarist/composer Pierre Vervloesem's first solo album since 2005 and where he does absolutely everything except for some vocals by his wife. He has previously recorded 7 CDs with X-Legged Sally and two CDs with A Group. He has performed live musical accompaniment for pieces by choreographer Wim Vandekeybus, released six CDs either alone or sometimes with musicians as various as Guy Segers (Univers Zero) or Charles Hayward (This Heat), and has mixed and/or produced too many bands to be cited here (around 100), including dEUS and Flat Earth Society. He has played with David Byrne, Bill Laswell and Marc Ribot and many others, and also has a release on the Off label with Teun Verbruggen as the duo P.V.T.V.. Not Even Close is a cacophony of drum beats, noodly keyboards and other electronics, percussive vocals and glitch-y videogame/carnivalesque squawls that will completely befuddle the brain. "P.V. Presents" is an exclusive series directed by Pierre Vervloesem, with future releases including The Kings Of Belgium, and The Claude Zac Ensemble

RAFAEL TORAL - Space Elements Vol. 1 (Staubgold 90; Germany) This is the third in Rafael Toral's Space Program series of releases -- his long-term research project launched in 2004, through which he has unearthed an innovative approach and a complete re-thinking of how electronic music is conceived and experienced. Using custom experimental instruments, Toral performs electronic music concerned with "phrasing and swing" and performing strange melodies with physicality, movement and gesture in flux. The result is something you're unlikely to have heard before, a kind of alien electronic jazz. After the acclaimed, orchestral Space and the follow-up Space Solo 1, this is the first volume of the Space Elements series, each release being focused on one kind of instrument, on small settings and including collaborations. Space Elements Vol. I features Rute Praca (cello), Margarida Garcia (electric double-bass), Sei Miguel's amazing percussionist Cesar Burago, and David Toop (flute), besides a short appearance by Sei Miguel himself. From Toral's liner notes: "Having found that jazz is the field of musical knowledge where disciplined decision-making is most developed, this music is more informed by jazz than by any other. The Space Program emphasizes articulating silence and sound, by structuring musical discourse on experimental instruments with a simple and clear sonic identity. To my surprise, I found no historical precedents to this practice, being that it draws practically no information from electronic music history (which is grounded on different thinking patterns), and it draws very little from jazz history as well, since the instruments I use are inadequate to play any music based on the Western system. I regard this approach to jazz (meaning a system of individual decision-making from the standpoint of free-spectrum live electronics) as a new and exciting field of creative possibilities. I called it 'post-free jazz electronic music.'"

MAMORU FUJIEDA - Patterns of Plants II (Tzadik 8061; USA) "One of my CD collecting obsessions pre-Y2K was microtonal music. I got everything I could get my hands on. In 1996, Tzadik introduced me to a composer named Mamoru Fujieda with a release titled Patterns of Plants. Various tuning systems using extended Just Intonation, Pythagorean and well temperaments, unique instrumentation and somehow composed using numbers from the subtle changes of electrical activity on the leaves of plants, this album was a revelation to me. Now we have a second volume of this music, this time with violin joining a free reed mouth organ, the sho and the transparent harp like sonorities of the koto. Five more chamber music suites - here called collections - use combinations of these instruments including one (the Fourteenth Collection) for solo violin. Fujieda studied composition with Morton Feldman and Gordon Mumma, these two albums remind me a lot of Lou Harrison. I'm already looking forward to volume III. Also on Tzadik is another CD to check out by this composer, the Night Chant." - David Beardsley.

INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN QUINTET - The Year of the Boar (JazzlandNOR; EEC) "Featuring Dave Rempis on alto, tenor & bari saxes, Jeff Parker on guitar & pedals, Ola Kvernberg on violin, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on acoustic bass & electronics and Frank Rosaly on drums & electronics. Bass monster/master for The Thing and the Scorch Trio, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, moved to Chicago a couple of years back. The is the second disc by Ingebrigt's fabulous quintet, the more I listen to it, the better it gets. "Maxwell's Silver Demon" is first and the violin & acoustic bass start things off as a restrained duo. When the entire quintet kicks in, it is a powerful force to behold. Strong bari sax and guitar blast the main theme together while the rhythm team rocks hard. Both Jeff on guitar and Dave on bari take great, blistering solos. Over-the-top! "Green Wood" has another memorable middle-easternish theme, that the quintet plays softly, building from a more laid back first part, that just keeps ascending until it explodes. "90/94" has a challenging, Braxton-like melody along with some swell fractured guitar, burning violin and blistering sax over a slamming rhythm team. Amazing! Drummer, Frank Rosaly, is featured on "Audrey" and shows off his rambunctious power, spinning in massive waves while the rest of the quintet plays with haunting grace around him, the tension subsiding slowly throughout with a lovely violin solo in the last section. "Ceremony" was written for Ingebrigt's mom and it has another memorable theme that will soon have you humming along to. I love the way this piece has a great righteous groove which erupts into a couple of short, scary free sections yet never looses sight of its underlying structure. "Prayer" was written for Ingebrigt's father and it simmers along superbly with yet another touching and tasty theme that sounds somehow familiar. Finally, "George" (for George Russell) brings this fantastic disc to a fine closing. Starting with eerie electronics, Dave's rip-roaring bari sax, Jeff's evil guitar and Ola's twisted violin wail together until the quintet brings things down to a quiet level, eventually building back up to another storming conclusion of jazz/rock whatever at its best! This colossal disc is some 70+ minutes long and it is certainly one of this year's greatest achievements!" - BLG

BIK BENT BRAAM [MICHIEL BRAAM et al] - Extremen (BBB 10 SBT; Netherlands) Jan Willem van der Ham - altosax and bassoon; Bart van der Putten - altosax and clarinet; Frans Vermeerssen - tenorsax; Frank Gratkowski - altosax; clarinet and bassclarinet;Angelo Verploegen - trumpet; Eric Boeren - cornet; Walter Wierbos - trombone; Peter Haex - tenortuba; Carl Ludwig Hubsch - tuba; Michiel Braam - piano; Wilbert De Joode - double bass; Michael Vatcher - drums; et al Michel Braam has been leading his little big band (always 13 members) since 1986, recording more than a half dozen discs and each one another challenge for him and the members of his ensemble. Although Michiel wrote all of the material here, there is a good deal of freedom of interpretation by the members of the ensemble, all of the pieces change every time they are performed. "Frankx" opens with what sounds like directed improv, the six reeds and five brass move in inter-connected layers around the piano, bass and drums in the center. Different subsections or combinations of players connect with one another, charted sections emerge in unexpected areas. This music often provides a fascinating blend of ideas, harmonies and strategies. On "Michielx" things begin starkly but soon, different tight subsections emerge and swirl around one another in odd combinations. It sounds like this ensemble has been working together for a long while since the shifts are so seamless and themes often emerge in unexpected places. Considering that this is a live recording, the sound is consistently well-balanced and the playing is extraordinary throughout! 70 minutes long and consistently superb! - BLG

CONNIE CROTHERS/BILL PAYNE - Conversations (New Artists 1044; USA) Featuring Connie Crothers on piano & Bill Payne on clarinet. Great review in All About Jazz, NY, so I am truly excited to hear this! " Rather than a high-energy blowout, these collaborations leave space, are generally thoughtful and feature close communication between the two musicians, whether they are echoing each other's thoughts or offering a pair of contrasting voices. Sounding very much like "Conversations," the improvisations give Crothers and Payne opportunities to create new melodies and thoughts on the spot, and it often makes for an intriguing listen. It is obvious that they have played together many times before and have a familiarity with each other's playing even as they continually surprise each other." - Scott Yanow

New ENJA remasters!

KENNY BARRON With WALLACE RONEY/JOHN STUBBLEFIELD et al - What If (enja 2142; Germany) A satisfying effort from pianist Kenny Barron. His second Enja release documents a quintet consisting of trumpeter Wallace Roney, tenor saxophonist John Stubblefield, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Victor Lewis. Long considered as one of the finest pianists in jazz, Barron's excellent composing skills are also evident on this worthy addition to his discography. Named Album of the Year by the LA Times upon original 1986 release

ABDULLAH IBRAHIM [DOLLAR BRAND] - Banyana: The Children Of Africa (Enja 2149; Germany) Featuring Abdullah Ibrahim on piano, soprano sax & voice, Cecil McBee on bass and Roy Brooks on drums. Mr. Ibrahim sings and plays soprano on "Ishmael" but otherwise sticks to piano on this trio set with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Roy Brooks. As usual Ibrahim's folkish melodies (this CD has six of his originals plus a previously alternate take of "Ishmael") pay tribute to his South African heritage and Islam religion without becoming esoteric or inaccessible. Some of the unpredictable music gets a bit intense (Ibrahim is in consistently adventurous form) but his flights always return back to earth and have an air of optimism. - Scott Yanow / AMG

WALTER NORRIS/GEORGE MRAZ - Drifting (enja 2124; Germany) This CD edition has two bonus cuts! "This entirely wonderful album sticks, as though glued, to my turntable. This is inebriating music, music which celebrates the piano both as an instrument and a concept." - Gary Giddins, Village Voice

ANDRE VIDA/ANTHONY BRAXTON With LOREN DEMPSTER/TYSHAWN SOREY - Child Reel Eyes (Vidatone 5; USA) Featuring Andre Vida on reeds & compositions, Anthony Braxton on reeds, Loren Dempster on cello and Tyshawn Sorey on percussion. Andre Vida is a fine saxist and composer who has studied and collaborated with Mr. Braxton and is currently residing in Berlin. 'Child Real Eyes' is a series of songs that Andre has worked on from 1994 to 2003. Although Andre refers to these pieces as "songs", each has a different way of dealing with textures and structures. "purrls" deals with distant, haunting drones for the saxes, cello and spacious percussion. Andre writes some thoughtful, hypnotic harmonies for the saxes and cello, as the subtle percussion provides minimal punctuation. I like the way Andre is constantly shifting the harmonies and structures for both reeds (saxes & clarinets), always exploring a wide variety of approaches and sounds that creative reed players have at their disposal. Often without squeaking or squawking too much, mostly warm and rich in their tones. Even when the saxes are used from opposite ranges (sopranino & bass sax on "tents"), Andre finds a strong common ground without pushing the extremes too far. More than half the pieces here are reeds duos and each one is fascinating in different ways. - BLG

"An amazing three CD 48 track compilation to sumup the early years of electronic music in the 20th century. Spiffy plastic sleeve holds a book and a fold out sleeve with 3 cds. These guys will probably win awards just for the design alone. Music that ranges from Clara Rockwell playing Tchaikovsky on the theremin and Messiaen performed on the Ondes Martenot (a theremin with a keyboard) to the music concrete of Pierre Schaeffer's school to Louis & Bebe Barron (the Forbidden Planet duo), John Cage, Edgard Varese, Richard Maxfield (unreleased too!) Stockhausen, MEV (unreleased), Raymond Scott, Reich, Oliveros, Subotnick, Tudor, Riley, Czukay, Luc Ferrari, Xenakis, La Monte Young (amazingly & it's even unreleased - a drift study, only two notes but they change), Charles Dodge, Paul Lansky, David Behrman, MEV (unreleased), Maryanne Armacher (unreleased, adds to the available recorded documentation of her work), Klaus Schultze, Jon Hassell (unreleased and very welcome here), Brian Eno and others. Whew! Forward by Brian Eno. Articles and words by Joel Chadabe, Otto Luening, Francois Bayle, D.J. Spooky, Kyle Gann, Robert Moog, writer Simon Reynolds, Pete Namlook (FAX), David Toop, Thurston Moore, Bill Laswell and others. So it sounds cool and even looks cool - a great place to check out the roots of todays electronic music." - David Beardsley
"This three-CD, 42-track compilation, spanning 1937-1982 (though largely comprised of performances from the '60s and '70s), includes pieces by many of the big names in experimental electronic music: John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Milton Babbitt, Laurie Spiegel, Robert Ashley, LaMonte Young, Morton Subotnick, and Iannis Xenakis. That alone would make this anthology impressive, but there are also contributions from composers who have made some impact with rock and pop recordings (Brian Eno, Klaus Schulze, Holger Czukay of Can, Jon Hassell), along with some names that are not commonly discussed in highbrow serious music circles (Raymond Scott), some composers not always associated with electronic music (Olivier Messiaen, Edgard Varese), and a host of names that aren't too well known beyond the avant-garde community. What is most impressive about this set, however, is that is not only serves as a reasonable overview of pre-1980 electronic music, but also is much more accessible in content to non-experts than many such compilations would have been. Contrary to the stereotype of serious electronic music as being difficult to listen to, many of the pieces are quite engaging for novices and electronic specialists alike. That's not to say there aren't plenty of more jarring or abstract pieces with minimal ambience or cut-up assemblages, or even occasional tracks that most listeners might find downright annoying (such as MEV's cacophonous "Spacecraft," mercifully placed at the very end of the first disc). On the whole, however, the set achieves the effect of both educating and entertaining, and is likely to expand the audience for a music that is too often unwilling to offer inviting introductions that might incite listeners to explore further. The 98-page booklet includes detailed track descriptions and comments, usually by the composers/performers themselves, as well as a forward by Eno" - Richie Unterberger, AMG

The album Go, released in April 1976, was a fine achievement and Yamash'ta assembled a band featuring collaborators Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve, Klaus Schulze and Al Di Miola to deliver a series of stunning concerts. The Parisian concert was captured by Island Records and was released as Go!... Live From Paris in 1977. CHRIS WOOD - Vulcan (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2079; UK) Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of the album Vulcan by the late Chris Wood, founder member of the legendary Traffic and flautist and saxophonist extraordinaire. Recorded just after the demise of Traffic in 1974, Vulcan was begun for Island Records but shelved in 1978. The sessions featured contributions from Steve Winwood and members of The Wailers, along with a live recording of Traffic performing the title track in 1974, but due to a change in musical fashion with the advent of Punk, the album failed to see the light of day. Island boss Chris Blackwell returned the tapes to Chris Wood in the late 1970s. Following Chris' untimely death in 1983 the tapes were passed on to his sister, Stephanie. Now, 25 years later, and after three years of research and preparation, Esoteric have pieced together the sessions in co-operation with Stephanie Wood to bring you Vulcan.
