APRIL 2002 COMPILATION of NEW RELEASES and REISSUES or PRE-NEWSLETTER 66: SIX NEW TZADIK CDS IN ONE F-KING MONTH!

NAKED CITY - Live Volume One: Knitting Factory 1989 (Tzadik 7336) Finally!!! The official release date is actually May 21 and we only have fifty or so advance copies, until they manufacture another big bunch. Naked City were (Bill Frisell, Fred Frith, Wayne Horvitz, Joey Baron & John Zorn) Zorn's most popular, influential, ground-breaking and exciting band ever! They covered more genres - jazz/rock/punk/surf/soundtrack/noise/country/cartoon music and often within one short blast/song. This phenomenal cd captures them in their early period doing tunes from their first release plus a previously unreleased gem - John Patton's "The Way I Feel"! This is the most anxiously anticipated Zorn release in years and it is now in stock for $14.

JOHN ZORN'S MASADA - First Live 1993 (Tzadik 7337) This was Masada's very first gig at the old Knit during the 'Month of Zorn' festival in September of 1993, before Zorn had even chosen a name for them - they were known as the Thieves Quartet after a movie that Zorn had scored by the same name. Well recorded and erupting with fire, passion and inventive spirits - this shows that they had that magic right from the beginning - a diamond in the rough! $14.

DEREK BAILEY - Ballads (Tzadik 7607) Experimental avant-jazz guitar wiz Derek Bailey performs a program of his favorite standards in his own enigmatic way on his newly acquired vintage arch-top acoustic guitar just days before he did an in-store hear at DMG! A textbook of originality, Derek alters and twists tunes from the American songbook into his own style and leaves us quite amazed by the results. Insight liner notes from Marc Ribot attempt to explain the mystery. $14.

TIM SPARKS - At The Rebbe's Table (Tzadik 7160) Featuring Bar Kokhba Chamber Masada members - Marc Ribot on second acoustic guitar, Erik Friedlander on cello, Greg Cohen on contrabass, Cyro Baptista on exotic percussion & Tim Sparks on lead acoustic guitar. From the breathtaking acoustic guitar wonder who created 'Tanz' and 'Neshamah', two of the most popular selections from the vast Tzadik catalogue, comes the third and finest release yet! An enchanting selection of Jewish melodies from around the world done with tenderness, grace and subtle complexities. To be shared with our loved ones from around the world! $14.

ROVO - Tonic 2001 (Tzadik 7239) An incredible Japanese supergroup which features members from the Boredoms, Bondage Fruit, Demi Semi Quaver, Sub Dub and Omoide Hatoba. This extraordinary double cd set captures their cosmic power and trance/rock jamming from their two night stand at Tonic just a few months ago - all who attended had their minds and bodies completely blown away Mixed in it's entirety by BILL LASWELL! An amazing blend of intense percussion, psych/prog synth/violin/keyboard space-rock and brain-blasting grooviness. Two cd set for $20.

CHARLES WUORINEN - Epithalamium (Tzadik 7077) Four masterworks from one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, spanning over three decades. Mr. Wuorinen is a NY born composer who has always pushed the limits of instrumental and electronic music. Chosen for this exclusive Tzadik release by longtime fan John Zorn, this cd features the Pulitzer Prize winning composition "Time's Encomium", "New York Notes" which brilliantly blends electronic tape with acoustic instruments and two extraordinary miniatures from the nineties - "Epithalamium" for two trumpets and "Lepton" for celeste, harp and piano. Marvelous! $14.

NEW THINGS FROM OTHER DOWNTOWN & RELATED HEROES:

FRED FRITH/MAYBE MONDAY - Digital Wildlife (Winter & Winter 071) Featuring Fred on guitar, Larry Ochs on saxes, Miya Masaoka on koto & electronics and Joan Jeanrenaud on cello. This is the long awaited and much anticipated second W&W release from the influential guitarist/composer/producer and Mills College professor Fred Frith. The last W&W release - 'The Traffic Continues' featured Ensemble Moderne, the premiere European modern classical chamber unit, which was extraordinary, one of Fred's greatest works. 'Digital Wildlife' is completely different since it features Fred's current all-star improv quartet with Larry Ochs (from Rova Sax Qt.), Miya Masaoka bay area/Brooklyn based modern koto explorer and former Kronos String Qt. cellist - Joan Jeanrenaud. This is certainly not just another highly focused improv date either, since engineer Miles Boisen (Splatter Trio guitar great) did sonic manipulation as it was recorded and Fred also added his sonic seasoning afterwards. There is a great deal going on here that will take some time to fathom through repeated listenings. This marvelous/demanding quartet will be featured up at the upcoming Victoriaville Festival next month, we hope to see many of you there. $15.

ELLIOTT SHARP/REINHOLD FREIDL - aNostalgia (Grob 428) Elliott is not only a master of eclecticism, his strength consists of stamping his own style upon a host of challenging genres/styles. No matter if the music is rock, free jazz or contemporary classical, his sound/vision is his own - dense, dramatic, loaded with layers of ideas, standing under enormous tension and thoroughly emotional. This is an amazing duo with Reinhold on prepared piano innards and Elliott on guitars and computer. $15.

MARK FELDMAN - Book of Tells (Enja 9385/import) This extraordinary cd contains five works for a string quartet with Erik Friedlander and Joyce Hammann as members (both also play in Zorn's string quartet with Feldman). It seems as Mark has put a great deal of time and work into this engaging music. Unfortunately, there is no domestic distribution for this fine release, and we are currently waiting to restock this, hopefully soon. $16.

URI CAINE - Rio (Winter & Winter 79) Three in a row and all completely different projects from the local piano giant - Uri Caine. 'Rio' is Uri's Brazilian project featuring Paolo Braga, Jorge Helder, Lula Galvao, Jair Oliveira, Kacau Gomes, Chris Telanno, Humberto Cazes. Groovy, breezy and fun. $15.

GOLD SPARKLE BAND - Fugues & Flowers (Squealer 029) There's an intoxicating sense of adventure at play over the course of these four engaging and magnificent works found here, recorded at various venues during Gold Sparkle's triumphant tour of the midwest in the spring of 2000. The music highlights the essence of the band's powerful collective concert explorations by updating the ancient fugue form with ultra-contemporary avant-jazz comprovisational melodies and strategies. $14.

STEVE DALACHINSKY - wake up lady, your kid is on fire (self-produced) The next generation of young local improvisers is upon us and are featured here with Cale Brandley & Brian Price on saxes, Nicki Nace & Simon Dasher on guitars and Matt Mottel on synth backing our good friend, cantankerous mc and impressive local wordsmith - Steve Dalachinsky. This harrowing piece was recorded live at CUANDO on October 20th, 2001 just five weeks after the World Trade Center disaster and the vibe in NYC was pretty dismal and this piece captures that disturbing feeling all too well as Steve's words paint a picture of inescapable spirits drowning in a sea of flames - the young players also weave the wares behind those words in a Sun Ra-like haze. Steve's voice and words erupt with the real confusion of life coming apart at the seams. This is a 30 plus minute one track CDEP in a limited edition of only 50 copies for $8.

MARIO PAVONE/MICHAEL MUSILLAMI QUARTET - op ed (Playscape 21901) Featuring Peter Madsen on piano, Michael on guitar, Mario on contrabass and Michael Sarin on drums. The is a superb modern jazz quartet date which features a few of our favorite friends - Mario Pavone is a consistently powerful bassist and composer, who along with Michael Sarin (from a few Dave Douglas units) were the late, great Thomas Chapin's amazing rhythm team. Musillami is also a fabulous jazz guitarist and composer who also utilized the talents of Thomas Chapin on a number fine releases and currently runs the Playscape label. Peter Madsen has been the longtime partner in Mario's past and present ensembles and is one of the finest jazz pianists around, never ceasing to impress all who hear him live or one record. This is the second excellent release for this fabulous quartet, both this newer one and the previous one ('motion poetry') sell for (cd only) $14.

FREEDOMLAND - Amusement Park (Rent Control 6) Featuring a downtown all-star cast of the ever-present Daniel Carter on reeds & trumpet, Dave Sewelson on baritone sax, Dave Hofstra on tuba, William Parker on contrabass and Dee Pop on drums. Live to DAT at Dee Pop's ongoing Sunday night series at CB's Lounge from February 10th of 2002. An intense set of downtown free-improv was well captured that night. $10.

MARK WHITECAGE TRIO with FERI NEMETH - Common Ground (Harmonia Produkcio 171) This one features Dominic Duval on contrabass, Jay Rosen on drums, Mark Whitecage on alto sax & clarinet and Feri Nemeth - a legendary blind tenor saxist from Eastern Europe. No US distribution, as far as we can tell. CD only release for $13.

TIM BARNES - all acoustics (Quakebasket 010) Tim is a fine local percussionist who has worked with Jim O'Rourke, Ikue Mori, Steve Dalachinsky, Glenn Kotche, Darin Gray, Raz Mesinai and is currently on tour with Neil Haggerty. He runs the small Quakebasket label which has released a duo percussion lp with Glenn Kotche, plus limited edition cigar box 2 cd sets with art work enclosed by Minamo and Michael Schumacher. 'all acoustics' is his first solo percussion cd and it was recorded in July of 2001 and it is indeed an all acoustic performance with no overdubs. Tim collects odd drums, cymbals and assorted percussion and does a beautiful job of exploring the many textures of his exotic percussion. Nicely recorded and enchanting throughout. CD only release for $10.

[BROTHER JAMIE SAFT & MR. DORGON] PRAMROD SEXENA - Gods Special People (Jumbo/Frank Booth 2002) The cover art of this vinyl only release features Christ's head pasted on top on Ozzy's body in a demonically religious pose, so we know we are in store for some strange stuff. Jamie is an ever-inventive electric keyboard wiz and dub-master who has been working with Zorn in a variety of projects over the past few years and whose second Tzadik cd will be out in June. The mysterious and striking local saxist - Dorgon is also filled with weird surprises and continues to garner legendary status in gullible zines like the Wire. Limited edition lp only release on clear gold vinyl for $15.

QPSM UNIT - The Seriousness of the Matter (Quadrophonic 1101) Featuring Matt Shipp, Frank Lacy, Sabir Mateen, Zane Massey, Masuja, Tulivu Cumberbatch on vocals, plus a bunch of African percussionists. This is a great record. LP only release for $10.

[RON ANDERSON-OLIVIER PAQUOTTE-CAMEL ZEKRI] - The Infusion (33Revpermi 2105) Ron Anderson is a relentlessly inspired guitarist for RonRuins, PAK and former bay area crazies - the Molecules! Camel Zekri plays acoustic guitar and electronics, grew up in Algeria and now lives in Paris. Olivier Paquotte is a phenomenal French bassist who does all sorts of odd things to his bass to coax out a variety of sounds. Together they improvise live in the studio, with excerpts from live gigs as well and show how far out they can travel. An imaginative mix of free-form and world influences. Import cd only release for $14.

MAT MANERI/PANDELIS KARAYORGIS QUINTET - Disambiguation (Leo 334) Featuring Tony Malaby on tenor sax, Pandelis on piano, Mat on violin, Michael Formanek on acoustic bass and Ralph Peterson on drums. An extraordinary and powerful all-star effort all around. "'Disambiguation' succeeds on that rare level where composition, orchestration, improvising strategies and unique individual talents all work towards an incredible unified effort"-Kevin Whitehead. We are still waiting for those chowderheads at City Hall distribution to send us copies more than a week past the street date!?! CD only release for $15.

ROBIN EUBANKS SEXTET - 4:JJ/Slide/Curtis and Al (TCB 97802) Strong and inspired '98 release from one of our favorite trombone heroes dedicated to his older trombone inspirations - JJ Johnson & Curtis Fuller. Featuring Mike Cain, Duane Eubanks, Lonnie Plaxico and Gene Jackson. $15.

STEVE COHN - The Blair Recordings (Leo 335) An enchanting solo effort from a consistently fine pianist who layers these recordings with keyboard overdubs, shakuhachi, shofar and some voice. There is a minimal amount of help from Blair Hardman on electronics and Johnny DeRobertis on voice. In stock one day soon & a CD only release for $15.

GUILLERMO BROWN - Soul at the Hands of the Machine (Thirsty Ear 57118) Guillermo is the current whirlwind drummer for the David S. Ware Qt. and this is his first effort as leader, a much different funky thang the free-jazz storm-force attack of the DSWQ. His ensemble includes Daniel Carter & Andre Vida (Braxton collaborator) on reeds; Peter Cafarella on piano; Morgan Michael Craft (from Burnt Sugar) on guitar; Shahzad Ismaily & Keith Whitty on basses; Latasha Diggs on vocals; Flam (Matt Shipp collaborator), Clay Holley & Jinsoo Kim on turntables, beats & mixing and Yorel Lashley on percussion. CD only release for $15.

A FEW GUITAR ORIENTED RELEASES FOR THEM PICKIN' FANS:

TISZIJI MUNOZ - The Hu-Man Spirit (Anami 021) Our favorite guitar legend, cosmic messenger and spiritual guide is back to bring in the new year and provide some psychic healing for this troubled planet. His stellar cast this time features Dave Liebman on saxes & flute, Bernie Senensky on piano, Don Pate & John Lockwood on basses and rhythmic navigator Rashied Ali on drums. Tisziji plays guitar (like no else), a bit of synth, bells and lets out a few screams which will wake those who are still sleeping. The second of this two cd set has some of Munoz' most haunting, sad and beautiful music of his vast catalogue of some twenty inspired releases. I am working on bringing Tisziji's cosmic quintet back to Tonic in the next few months, so stay tuned. Two hours of avant-jazz spiritual eruptions on a two cd set for $18.

*** There are five cds from the grand-master and elder statesman of European improv/avant jazz guitar - DEREK BAILEY this month, including the sublime, yet gnarly 'Ballads' cd on Tzadik listed above. Derek will be in town for the second half of May and performing/organizing the four night Company fest at Tonic from May 15-May 18th with participants John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Jim O'Rourke, Cyro Baptista, Ikue Mori, Fred Sherry, DJ Olive & Miguel Fransconi.

DEREK BAILEY - New Sights, Old Sounds (Incus 48/49) This is a reissue of the impossibly rare double album set solo guitar offering from the Morgue label out of Japan from 1978, which most of us have never, ever seen. Only in print for one year and then gone. Two cd set for $25.

DEREK BAILEY - London Duos 2001 (Incus 51) Extraordinary improvised duos with local hero Julian Kytasty on bandura & flute (from the Experimental Bandura Trio), Roger Turner (from Four Walls & Konk Pack) on percussion and Alan Wilkinson on baritone sax and voice. Cd only release for $16.

DEREK BAILEY & MIN XIAO-FEN - Flying Dragons (Incus 50) Pipa virtuoso, Min Xiao-Fen has become one of the finest improvisers to emerge from the downtown scene over the past few years, she never ceases to amaze us at each and every performance - from solo through group improv through jazz and world musics! Check out her sublime playing on Zorn's 'Filmworks VIII' or on tour with Randy Weston or with Leo Smith. Her playing at Derek's Company Fest at Tonic last year was incredible! This is the second duo cd from Derek and Min and it is of course amazing once again. This fine duo will also be performing at Tonic on May 25th! CD only release for $16.

DEREK BAILEY/FRANZ HAUTZINGER - self/titled (Grob 425) Franz Hautzinger's style, heavily loaded with noise and toted for his solo cd 'Gomberg' (Grob 211), sabotages the typical reaction patterns and clichés of (the really no longer very) free music. He has opened this music to new perspectives, created other structural levels, made possible a differentiated listening, as old fashioned as this sounds! As an outsider Hautzinger is able to shift the party lines, thanks to his absolutely individual, idiosyncratic way of playing the trumpet. Obviously Derek Bailey had no problems adapting ad hoc to this perspective. And because one knows that Bailey is Bailey, one doesn't need to get dumfounded, but can directly submerge into the fine, careful (but not reserved) structures and branches and thereby perceive how Hautzinger forms his own playing, how he growls, broods, mumbles and murmurs softer. Until a melody appears on the horizon. One of the first improv records of the new century, said in all modesty. CD only for $15.

CHRISTY DORAN'S NEW BAG - Black Box (Challenge 71022) Another one of our favorite electric guitarists returns with his second release from distinctive Swiss jazz/rock/prog electric quartet with special guest Muthuswamy Balasubramoniam added on the mridangam (Indian hand drum). The rest of the quartet includes Wolgang Zwiauer on el. bass, Fabian Kurati on drums and Bruno Amstad on vocals - who has a fine voice. Like that last New Bag cd, this one also is quite diverse - moving through jazz/funk/rock/Brazilian/world music influences, yet is never predictable. These tunes are often busy, tight and filled with intense nervous energy and unexpected twists and turns. Of course, we get a number of great daredevil guitar solos from the ever inventive Christy Doran. $16.

ANDRE CHOLMONDELEY - spirit, magnetics and entropy (ufomusic 002) Andre plays (lead) guitar in that fabulous Jersey-based Zappa tribute band - Project Object, helps manage Don Preston's Akashic Ensemble and seems to be involved with a myriad of other activities, guesting with John Richey's Lunar Bear Ensemble and in endless jams with creative musicians in the metropolitan area. He also has a bizarre duo called JFK's LSD UFO and now has released his first solo guitars project. Actually, this cd features electric, acoustic, synth & bass guitars with mucho devices, looping, sequencers, electronic percussion and some strange vocals. What most impresses me here is the way Andre has layered different guitar lines, which tell dreamy stories with a healthy nod to diverse guitar heroes like Hendrix, Zappa, Andy Summers, Steve Hillage, etc. Sublime stoner music for all of us guitar freaks. $10.

NEW ITEMS FROM MANY OF FAVORITE EUOPEAN MUSICIANS:

DANIEL HUMAIR QUARTET - Liberte Surveillee (Sketch 333020) Featuring Ellery Eskelin on tenor sax, Marc Ducret on guitar, Bruno Chevillon on contrabass and Humair on drums. This is a fine effort in which both Ducret and Eskelin play inspired solos throughout and the rhythm section also immensely elastic and ever-pushing the quartet through many magical flights! Two CD only set for $16.

LOUIS SCLAVIS - Dans la Nuit [Music for the Silent Movie by Charles Vanel] (ECM 1805) Featuring Louis Sclavis on clarinets, Jean-Louis Matinier on accordion, Dominique Pifarely on violin, Vincent Courtois on cello and Francois Merville on percussion & marimba. As well as being France's most highly-regarded contemporary jazz musician, Louis Sclavis has a long history as a film composer, and this richly melodic album presents his original score for the restored version of a classic movie from the silent era. At the invitation of Bertrand Tavernier, Sclavis wrote new music to accompany Charles Vanel's 1930 film, "Dans la nuit". He assembled an exceptional band for this project, employing former colleague violinist Dominique Pifarély to interact with Vincent Courtois, cellist from the current Sclavis band. Drummer François Merville is featured on marimba as well as percussion, and the blend of sonorities is very special. - ECM press clip. Last year, Sclavis' 'L'AffrontementS' was by far, one of the finest releases of 2001, this one is equally outstanding, but restrained and elegant. CD only for $16.

EDDIE PREVOST - Material Consequences (Matchless 48) Without a doubt, one of the finest of all European avant/jazz/new music percussionists shows the infinite possibilities of percussion explorations. CD only British import for $16.

ERNST REIJSEGER & ALAN PURVES - TA (Nimbus 503) Former ICP Orchestra, Clusone 3 and current Amsterdam String Trio and W&W recording artist - Ernst Reijseger is an astonishing and endless inventive cellist. Here Ernst improvises inspired duos with Scotch percussionist Alan "Gunga" Purves for their one & only west coast performance in April of 1987 and previously unreleased. They cover a wide variety of territory from the hilarious to the sublime to the free-spirited sounds of two restless souls pushing each other. $10.

JOELLE LEANDRE/LAUREN NEWTON/URS LEIMGRUBER - Out of Sound (Leo 337) Superb and engaging contrabass/voice/saxes trio effort from three masters who currently reside in Europe. Enchanting singer Lauren Newton can be heard on numerous releases by the Vienna Art Orchestra. Tenor and soprano sax specialist Urs Leimgruber can often be heard working with percussionist - Fritz Hauser. CD only release for $15.

TAO [CARLO ACTIS DATO/YASUHIKO TACHIBANA/KEISUKE OHTA] - Tomorrow Night Gig (Leo 332) Another fantastic improv trio featuring our favorite Italian sax hero - Carlo Actis Dato along with the remarkable bassist - Tachibana and violinist/vocalist - Mr. Ohta. GOLDEN YEARS OF THE SOVIET NEW JAZZ: VOLUME 2 - Four CD Box Set (Leo GY 405/408) Featuring Ganelin Trio, Orkestrion, Vladimir Rezitsky, Jazz Group Arkhangelsk, This the final chapter the incredible saga of "new jazz" under the Communist regime. This was supposed to have been here a week ago but City Hall Distribution sucks, so who knows when this will arrive?!? This is a limited edition four CD box set of 500 copies only for $36.

TOMASZ STANKO - Soul of Things (ECM) They're a rarity, but there are horn players who get stronger as they get older. Tomasz Stanko, in his 60th year, is one of them. "Soul of Things" is essential Stanko, the Polish trumpeter playing with that dark, intense tone that is so immediately identifiable. The programme on this occasion is a ballad-esque suite, brimming over with Slavic lyricism, and simply titled 'Soul of Things', "Variation 1-13". The music makes allusion, in passing, to themes Stanko has contributed to Polish film, and other pieces of his, including the classic "Maldoror's War Song" are also quoted, but as Stanko says, tongue only partly in cheek, "I've been playing the same song my whole life." Titles, in other words, are after the fact; what matters is the emotional depth, and this has been a constant through the different phases and forms that Stanko's music has taken over the years. There is a "timeless" feel to "Soul of Things" that relates to Stanko's roots as a player; this forward-looking trumpet player is also looking back here. His all-inclusive music on this occasion seems to connect with early influences. While sounding unmistakably like himself he also triggers memories of his first heroes, memories of Miles, memories of Chet Baker, in his lonesome, soulful soliloquies. - ECM press release. CD only for $16.

JOHN WOLF BRENNAN/DANIELE PATUMI - Time Jumps, Space Cracks (Leo 331) An exquisite duo of piano and contrabass from the grand Irish-born Swiss-based piano giant - John Wolf Brennan and this wonderful Italian contrabass hero. Rooted in modern classical, jazz evolution, imaginary folk and minimal music(s) world-wide. CD only for $15.

MAGGIE NICOLS/CAROLINE KRAABEL/CHARLOTTE HUG -Transitions (Emanem 4068) A month after their amazing performance at the freedom of the city festival, this improvising trio returned to the Conway Hall to record some further highly distinctive and extraordinary music. Three strong individuals - Maggie Nicols (voice), Caroline Kraabel (alto saxophone & voice) and Charlotte Hug (viola) -- combine to make an exceptional trio. 56 minutes long and previously unissued. Cd only UK import for $17.

SUPHALA - Instru Mental (self-produced) Suphala [accent on the first syllable] may be familiar to those of you who have heard her fine tabla playing on the Burnt Sugar albums or DJ Logic's Rope-A-Dope cd, or remember her great cut "Psyche" from the InnerRhythmic Sound System sampler compiled by Bill Laswell. Well, the InnerRythmic label has decided against releasing this, so we contacted her to see if she had any left of the original pressing - she did. (warning to Laswell completists - he has no involvement with this record) But having said that, to anyone who loves hybrid tabla musics on the avant edge, this is quite a disc. Sparse but extremely creative, she is accompanied on various cuts by guests Vernon Reid on guitar, cellist Giulia Loli, violinist Emilio "zef" China and bass guitarist Maximina. CD only for $13.

LAST DITCH EFFORT TO GET A FEW APC CDS BEFORE THEY'RE GONE FOR GOOD - JUST A FEW COPIES LEFT!!

IGNORE THE BEAT [VA] (A.P.C. 20) 12 tracks, including 3 (one a Lawell remix) versions of "My Body Can't Ignore The Beat", of what at times sounds like Euro-retro House/Garage/Underground/Electro dance stuff. Touches of all the styles are in this. The entire album was produced by Bill Laswell (with APC founder Jean Touitou on 6 cuts). Included here is the 12" B-side "Oriental Disco". Until we got them, the French mail-order price was $25 US. Our price for this CD is $18.

HAVANA MOOD [VA] (APC 13) comprised of 2 CDs: the 1st disc is original classic Cuban rhythmic folk songs - a great collection in itself. The 2nd disc (which was released on vinyl by APC as Havana Mood: Rhum And Bass - we no longer have that!) is Laswell drum and bass/dub remixes of the material from disc 1 - and its outstanding! This is unrelated to and far better than - 'the Imaginary Cuba' cd that was released on Wicklow. Highly recommended! 2CD set $30.

APC TRACKS VOL. 1 (APC 003) The documentation was never very clear, but the players seem to be Laswell, Nicky Skopelitis, J B Mondino, Henry Hanell and Bernard Zerri, creating a collection of infectious instrumental dancefloor cuts, ultimately evading classification; produced by Laswell. Great stuff! CD for $17

APC TRACKS VOL. 2 (APC 004) The players here are Laswell, Nicky Skopelitis, Brain, Mami Chan, DXT, Natsuko Kimura, and Jean-Pierre Sluys - creating a 2nd collection of infectious instrumental dance floor cuts, ultimately evading classification; produced by Laswell. Great stuff again! CD only for $17.

LILI BONICHE - Alger Alger (APC 008) French Algerian guitarist/singer Boniche and his excellent band produced here in the studio by Bill Laswell. Great ethnic music with complementary production! CD only for $17.

NEW & HISTORIC RELEASES from the ELECTRONIC & MODERN CLASSICAL WORLDS:

POIRE_Z + - self/titled (Erstwhile 022) Poire_z, the quartet of Günter Müller, Voice Crack and Erik M, has been performing together since December 1998. In the summer of 2000, they began a series of performances which included a different fifth member each time. These guests have included Keith Rowe, Martin Tétreault, Lê Quan Ninh, Florian Hecker, and Kevin Drumm in addition to the three excerpted sets which make up +, featuring Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M, and Christian Marclay. '+' is poire_z's third fabulous release, following the self-titled debut on For 4 Ears, and 'presque_chic' on Sonoris. The guest musicians' distinctive personalities define each track, infiltrating the core quartet's whirlwind of ideas -- influencing, gently nudging, but never impeding or derailing the constant progress. $13.

MIMEO/JOHN TILBURY: The Hands Of Caravaggio (Erstwhile 021) MIMEO, the Music In Movement Electronic Orchestra, is a band composed of twelve of Europe's premier electronics improvisers. Due both to logistical and financial constraints, they have only performed together a handful of times since the establishment of the current lineup in 1998. After the remarkable success of their epic, 24-hour long performance in Vand'ouevre in May of 2000, the band did not assemble again until almost a year later in Bologna, for the Angelica festival organizer. The concert was a singular one, as MIMEO was joined by the noted pianist John Tilbury, nonpareil Feldman interpreter and longstanding member of AMM. The performance was built around a concerto for piano and electronic orchestra, titled "The Hands Of Caravaggio" and loosely inspired by the Caravaggio painting The Taking Of Christ, as interpreted by Keith Rowe. The piece begins with a low test-tone drone from Cor Fuhler, working inside the piano, followed by Tilbury's entrance a few minutes later. Next, Jérôme Noetinger sets off a flare, signaling the introduction of the electronics. The accumulation of electronics gradually reaches critical mass, at times obscuring the piano altogether. But Tilbury is never completely hidden for long; space opens, and the piano emerges. As the piece evolves, the musicians discover a more delicate counterbalance to work within, which ultimately dissipates into silence. $13.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/MARTIN TETREAULT/PHILIP JECK - Invisible Architecture 01 (Audiosphere 01) Audiosphere is a new label what was made possible by collaborations between Audioview and Sub Rosa -- to explore the most innovative aspects of the electronic scene today, we have created a brand new live series -- including some original collaborations between musicians' -- called Invisible Architecture. This is a new series devoted to specific live events, often involving special collaborations between two or three musicians offering pieces of a primarily unreleased nature; and in appreciation of such urgent creativity. We have chosen to document and honor such recordings with this original series. What we present here are innovative and unique recordings which retain all the magic of each event, by utilizing new bio-aural techniques. This recording is a fabulous electronic improvisation with and between three masters with thirty minutes of pure joy. A great unpublished work from the Brussels 2000 sessions: one of the participants is Philip Jeck. After studying visual arts at Dartington College in Devon, Jeck began a performance career that found him at art galleries. In similar territory to Christian Marclay and John Oswald, Philip Jeck is an avant-garde turntablist, plunderphonic sample terrorist and performance artist whose most famous installation, 'Vinyl Requiem', included no less than 180 turntables. Cd only for $15.

MISCELLANEOUS NEW RELEASES from NON-DOWNTOWN ARTISTS:

CHRISTIAN FENNESZ & MIKA VAINIO - Invisible Architecture 02 (Audiosphere 02) Mika Vainio is one of the two heads of Pan Sonic -- active as performer, solo or in short collaboration. He is also involved in installations and performances at Museums and Galleries. Pan Sonic have remained, over recent years, as one the most interesting electronic bands, alongside artists such as Autechre and Oval. Christian Fennesz began as guitarist and became one of the most brilliant improvisers with a powerbook. He is highly appreciated by artists such as Jim O'Rourke, and has developed a great science of the de-structured sound. His last CD on Mego 'Endless Summer' was highly acclaimed, but currently has no US distribution, although we might just have a copy around here. The recording contains two unpublished works from the Brussels 2000 sessions (30 minutes by Vainio alone plus 30 minutes of Vainio & Fennesz). Highly abstract and obsessive and over an hour of fascinating sonic sculptures. Cd only for $15.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/KEITH ROWE/TAKU SUGIMOTO - Ajar (Alcohol S1) Subtle sonic manipulation guitar trio recorded at LMC Sound in London and engineered and mixed by Xentos. Their recent trio set at Tonic was one of the year's highlights. Florescent pink cardboard wallet insert with amusing color snaps of the players, who surely need no introduction. $16.

BOB OSTERTAG - Say No More Volumes 1 & 2 (Seeland 521) Seeland announces the first of two (re)releases that comprise the entire Say No More Project of Bob Ostertag. This project is, without exaggeration, unique in the history of music: a virtuoso quartet (Phil Minton, Mark Dresser, Joey Baron & Ostertag himself) that co-exists with a digital mirror of itself. Ostertag began by sending the musicians, separately, into studios with no instructions other than to record improvisations. Using a computer, he exploded the solos into fragments, and created a virtual 'band' from the pieces, then challenged the musicians to learn the works he had created -- in effect, to re-learn their own playing, but as heard through the prism of Ostertag's manipulations. The ensemble began to develop a life of its own as the musicians struggled to perform the computer-derived material. The 'Say No More Project, Volumes 1 & 2', shows this remarkable work. The first cd, 'Say No More', features the works Ostertag made on the computer. The second - 'Say No More In Person', features the live ensemble performing the fractured computer composition created from their solos. These are re-issues of out of print titles long unavailable and never available together, packaged in a beautiful hand silk-screened steel box with color inserts. The presentation is as original and elegant as the music. Two CD set for $16.

MORTON FELDMAN - Last Pieces (performed by Stephane Ginsburgh) (Sub Rosa 189) This new release on Sub Rosa is the third in a series of three concentrating on avant-garde piano compositions. American composer Morton Feldman, born 1926, is now recognized as one of the most important composers of the 20th century. After he met John Cage in the late forties he developed a method of intuitive composing which allowed Feldman to work on the outside of the strict classical system. On this recording pianist Stephane Ginsburgh plays three piano compositions which capture the essence of Morton Feldman's artistry, pure moments of sound and infinity. Or as Ginsburgh quoted: "Ask the music first and use your concentration." $15.

MORTON FELDMAN - Turfan Fragments (Dog with a Bone 04) The works include "For Samuel Beckett" and "The Turfan Fragments". Performed by the Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble with Petr Kotik as the conductor. "For Samuel Beckett" and "The Turfan Fragments" are Feldman's only chamber orchestra compositions. Both were commissions: "The Turfan Fragments" for the Swiss-Italian Radio Orchestra in 1980 and "For Samuel Beckett" was comissioned by the Schönberg Ensemble, Amsterdam, in 1987. Both titles are descriptive and suggest how Feldman arrived at a particular concept for each piece. "The Turfan Fragments" is a succession of short sections, which could indeed be described as fragments. The title relates the composition to manuscripts from Turfan (the southwest region of present-day China), which are in the collection of the Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. These calligraphic remnants, going back to the ninth century, were brought to Germany before World War I and Feldman must have seen them while living in Berlin in 1971. In contrast, "For Samuel Beckett" is based on a single idea of several chord progressions unfolding continuously for almost an hour. In 1977, Beckett wrote a text for Feldman, to be used as the libretto for his opera Neither. Feldman's description of Beckett's writing most eloquently suggests what was on his mind when composing "For Samuel Beckett": "Here's something peculiar about it [the Beckett's text]. I can't catch it. Finally I see that every line is really the same thought said in another way. And yet the continuity acts as if something else is happening. Nothing else is happening. What you're doing, in an almost Proustian way, is getting deeper and deeper saturated into the thought." - Morton Feldman. $18.

LOU HARRISON - Solo Keyboards (New Albion 117) Complete title: 'Complete Harpsichord Works, Music for Tack Piano & Fortepiano, In Historic and Experimental Tunings'. Performed by Linda Burman-Hall, keyboards. "Although for several centuries keyboards were made that presented more than twelve tones, the hypnosis of twelve has continued, and continues to spread wherever 'Western' culture settles in. Even here there are apostates. The important composer Harry Partch built an entire orchestra for his works written in a forty-three tone scale.Younger people still do this and, in addition, tend to show tunings by means of 'lattices'. In this fine recording of my keyboard works, Linda and I have become a part of such apostasy from the dull grey of industrial twelve tone equal temperament and worked together to take back to ourselves as artists the natural right to tune pieces in ways that are fitting, appropriate, or enhance musical beauty." - Lou Harrison $14.

CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE - Music For Big Ears (Staalplaat 156) This recent re-discovery was started by Barooni, when they were still housed in Staalplaat. Since then Palestine has had releases on Alga Marghen and World Serpent, as well as many hard to get limited edition releases for galleries. In summer of 2000, Staalplaat commissioned a special project for him: to play music on the carillon of a church in Berlin. Afterwards the recordings were mixed by Palestine and Radboud Mens in a studio in Amsterdam. "At 15 years old I started to play the bells in the church tower next to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Everyday for six years, I evolved a sonority that changed and transformed like a soap opera using the 25 bells as clang oscillators. Playing this very physical instrument at the same time that I developed my electronic music helped my search for "sonority versus energy". A signature of my sonic investigations - I developed the sonorities on this disk specially for the Daimler-Benz carillon in Berlin and for Jeffrey Bossing the carilloner of this instrument and myself using our four fists and four legs... As this form of sound making takes a big instrument in a big tower played in a big way - I call this work 'Music For Big Ears.'-- C. Palestine. CD only release for $15.

ROGER REYNOLDS - All Known All White (Pogus 21025) Pogus is delighted to be reissuing these three long out of print works from the wonderful barrier breaking composer - Roger Reynolds! From the liner notes: "...the serpent-snapping eye" (1978) was composed for trumpet, percussion, piano and four-channel tape. The work is twenty minutes long, divided into three roughly equal sections. In the first, the primary aim of the performers is to match, submit to and intensify the taped sounds. The second, in which the synthesized sounds are sparse, introduces a felling of independence as the performers respond, reflecting on models provided by the tape. In the final section, the live performers complement and elaborate upon -- they attempt to augment -- the synthesized sound. "Ping" and "Traces", were composed to complement one another. "Ping" represents a continuing interest in theater and inter-media running through Reynolds' compositions since "The Emperor of Ice Cream" (1961-62). In live performance the three strands of events occur simultaneously but are not synchronized. As a recorded performance, "Ping" is a self-sustained composition of instrumental improvisation over taped and electronic music. "Traces" was written for the composer-pianist Yuji Takahashi. Scored for solo piano, with flute, cello, ring modulator, signal generator, and six independent channels of taped sound, this work is concerned not only with events but their residues (or traces). This and all other Pogus CD'S still sell for $10.

TOM HEASLEY - On the Sensations of Tone (Innova 566) Tom plays tuba, does throat singing and works with loops and digital processing. He has played here at DMG and created a mesmerizing swarm of sounds with just his trusty tuba and processing. "This is an otherworldly drone experience. A cavernous panorama of sonic seasoning, deliciously deep drones, spiraling swells of brass shifting seismic plates"-informative/honest Innova press clip. $14.

HENRY FLYNT - C Tune (Locust 03) Henry Flynt is a seasoned tourist of "The World Of The Other Ear" and "C Tune" is his ringing, psychedelic meditation on/from the cosmos. Call it a sonic postcard or call it late night head music or even call it ecstatic minimalism if you have to. On this forty seven minute foray, our man Flynt takes his electrified fiddle and blends his droning sonic calisthenics with lonesome swing melodies and high decibel screech to the somnambulistic playing of his expatriate mathematician pal Mr/Mrs. C.C. Hennix on Pran Nath Tamboura. Recorded in 1980 in an undisclosed pocket of the galaxy and now available for blissful consumption. Cd only for $14.

ADAMS/COX/FINK/FOX - self/titled (Cold Blue 0009) Sometimes dark, sometimes quietly celebratory, the music on this cd is as straightforward as it is haunting and evocative. This disc, featuring new-music clarinetist Marty Walker, brings together Alaskan composer John Luther Adams' Dark Wind, a work for bass clarinet, mallet percussion, and piano - penned in 2001, with three quintets for clarinet/bass clarinet and string quartet written in the early '90s by Los Angeles composers Rick Cox, Michael Jon Fink, and Jim Fox. All of these pieces -- distinct in their own voices, yet united in their muted intensities and sensuous surfaces -- inhabit a musical space that's just slightly (and interestingly) apart from most of today's prominent 'isms,' yet undeniably a part of the greater contemporary musical landscape. CD for $13.

COLD BLUE - various artists compilation (Cold Blue 0008) Back by popular demand (and available for the first time as a cd), this essential collection of West Coast new music -- an anthology known simply as 'Cold Blue' - is a classic. Originally issued on vinyl in 1984 and although bound together by a common concern with music's basic sensuality, the pieces collected here are wide-ranging in style - process-driven works, through-composed pieces, ambient soundscapes, and music that glances in the directions of world music and avant-pop influences. In instrumentation, the music is also wide-ranging -- from a celesta solo to a marimba quartet to a player piano solo to works for speaking voices to music for piano and bullroarer, plus works for solo piano, synthesizers, cello and piano, and perhaps the only known piece of new music for pedal steel guitar and multi-tracked banjo. Composers include: Michael Byron, Jim Fox, David Mahler, James Tenney, Chas Smith, Peter Garland, Ingram Marshall, Daniel Lentz, Read Miller, John Kuhlman, Rick Cox, Michael Jon Fink, Eugene Bowen, and Harold Budd. $13

SCOTT SMALLWOOD - Desert Winds: Six Windblown Sound Pieces And Other Works (Deep Listening 17) " 'Desert Winds' is a series of six compositions based on the field recordings made in the Wendover/Great Salt Lake Desert Region on the Utah/Nevada border. As a sound artist who utilizes field recordings, I initially was concerned about the high desert winds causing technical difficulties for me. However, I soon discovered that the desert wind was one of the most interesting assets to me in my quest for finding interesting objects/sites to record. The sounds recorded were all produced by the wind." - Scott Smallwood $13.

CROOKED [OST] (Word Sound 041) Various artists compilation and soundtrack featuring numerous local dub & hip hop artists featuring Spectre, Anti-Pop Consortium, Prince Paul, etc. Two cd set with second cd as two hour dvd/video for $20.

ANTIBALAS - Talkatif (Ninja Tune 066) New record by Brooklyn's hardest working afro-beat collective. Antibalas (Spanish for 'Bulletproof,' literally 'Anti-bullets') is the next generation of afrobeat in the tradition of the Black President, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. This fifteen plus piece band hits hard with the left and the right -- monstrous horns and bass layered over funky polyrhythmic beats and breaks coupled with furious lyrics challenging and attacking the dehumanizing capitalist system and inciting insurrection in English, Yoruba, and Spanish. Antibalas formed in May 1998 from members of Desco Records' Soul Providers and the Daktaris. They were quickly joined by like-minded New York musicians active in the worlds of jazz, rock, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and Brazil. This union of Latinos, whites, African-Americans, Africans and Asian-Americans is based in Brooklyn, NYC. I have seen/heard this great local Afrobeat unit on numerous occasions and they fucking rule!!! Lp available for $14, cd available for $15.

AKINETON RETARD - Akranania (Mylodon Records 004) Second fantastic release from the dark progressive/jazz-rock instrumental band from Chile featuring a line-up of el. guitar, two saxes, basses, drums and minimal spooky vocals. I hear elements of Magma, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf and even a section that reminds of Henry Cow's 'Leg End' freer side, but they do have their own unique sound. Extremely tight and well crafted works for both saxes, el. guitar and a diverse/adventurous rhythm team. You gotta love song titles like "Fana Papal y el Monsenor Smegma Nazi" or "Dementia Absorbant". Bravo! New US distribution. CD at $14.

ANTHONY BRAXTON/SCOTT ROSENBERG - Compositions/Improvisations 2000 (barely audible 222) Up and coming multi-saxist and composer - Scott Rosenberg recently paid DMG a visit, leaving us with four fine cd's to savor. L.A. born and schooled at Wesleyan under Mr. Braxton, he has lived in the bay area, NY and Chicago over the past decade. Both Braxton and Rosenberg play a number of saxes, flute and clarinets here, performing both their own compositions as well as a few engaging improvisations. A most impressive display of creative spirits. Released in 2000. CD only release for $14.

THE BEVIS FROND - What Did for the Dinosaur (Rubric 41) Another fabulous slice of post-sixties psych/rock/folk from our good pal Nick Saloman and his gnome-like power trio. Great songs, endearing Elvis Costello-like voice and loads of mind-blowing psychedelic geetar solos. $13.

MELVINS/FANTOMAS [BIG BAND] - Millenium Monsterwork (Ipecac 19) Colossal collaboration and loads of fun from these two over-the-top post metal/punk/whatever insane units! $12.

THE NECKS - Hanging Gardens (ReR NECKS1) Australian trio the Necks have caused a huge stir recently, creating ripples in the usually calm waters of improvised contemporary jazz. Their daring fusion of improvised jazz with chill-out dance music and minimalism has been hailed by the international music press, and with ten years of recording and playing live behind them, they have established a substantial following. With just acoustic piano, double bass, drums and the odd sample they have created their own unmistakable style. The method is simple; they start playing, and whatever it is they start with they just keep doing it, while any changes are only allowed to be gradual. It makes for a hypnotic dream-like experience, as if Miles Davis's 'In A Silent Way' had been filtered through the minimalist concepts of Terry Riley and Phillip Glass, and then performed with more than half an ear towards ambient/trance music. $14.

IMPORTANT REISSUES, HISTORIC DISCS and SOME SALE ITEMS, TOO:

CHRIS McGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH - Brotherhood Of Breath (Akarma 200) Joe Boyd-produced first album originally released in 1971 by the RCA subsidiary Neon. South African jazz piano wonder Chris McGregor formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the '60s and later settled in London where soon formed a big band to work with on a regular basis called The Brotherhood Of Breath (essentially the Blue Notes augmented by musicians they befriended in the British jazz community). One of the truly legendary modern jazz big bands, the Brotherhood of Breath had a tremendous impact on all future European big bands. They incorporated the true spirit of South African music into an ecstatic trance of jazz and rock stylings. The culmination of the explosive group's sound reaches a majestic peak in the 20 minutes of "Night Poem". This is a great studio release with excellent compositions (particularly "The Bride"). The fabulous all-star line-up features an amazing cast of characters - John Surman, Dudu Pukwana, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, Harry Beckett, Marc Charig, Alan Skidmore, Mongezi Feza, Mike Osborne, Ronnie Beer, Nick Evans and Malcolm Griffiths. Available on both high quality vinyl for $20. and on cd for $16.

GRACHAN MONCUR III - New Africa (Get Back 321/BYG) One of the rarest and most sought after of all BYG avant-jazz classics featuring Roscoe Mitchell, Archie Shepp, Alan Silva, Andrew Cyrille and legendary trombone hero - Grachan Moncur III! Grachan only recorded a few albums - two for Blue Note, one for JCOA and this one - all of which were great! Lp only for $15.

ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO - Reese & the Smooth Ones (Get Back 329/BYG) More cosmic manna from the BYG catalogue. This long and free-flowing quartet (pre-Don Moye) date from the Saravah Studio in Paris from August 12th of 1969. One long kaleidoscopic jam that moves through a variety of moods, colors, shapes and sizes. High quality vinyl only album for $15.

ARCHIE SHEPP - Yasmina, A Black Woman (Get Back 34/BYG) Another of tenor sax giant Archie Shepp's fabulous studio dates from August of 1969 in Paris with an odd cast of characters from both the avant and more mainstream jazz world playing well together. The collective personnel features Archie, Roscoe Mitchell, Arthur Jones & Hank Mobley on saxes, Clifford Thorton on cornet, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Dave Burrell on piano, Malachi Favors & Earl Freeman on basses and Sunny Murray, Philly Joe Jones & Art Taylor on drums. The side-long title track is especially mind-blowing! Lp only release for $15.

ALBERT AYLER - New York Eye And Ear Control (ESP/Abraxas 1016) It isn't strictly an Albert Ayler album, but still a very interesting collaborative and freely improvised soundtrack project for Michael Snow's film of the same name. Recorded in July 1964 with Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray. Liner notes, photos and more... digitally remastered from the original tapes. CD reissue for $15.

ALBERT AYLER - Spirits Rejoice (ESP/Abraxa 1020) Recorded in 1965 at Judson Hall, NYC, with Donald Ayler (trumpet), Call Cobbs (harpsichord), Henry Grimes & Gary Peacock (basses), and Sonny Murray (drums). Cobbs' harpsichord conjures up the spirit world in Ayler's most directly spiritual statement. CD reissue for $15.

ERIC DOLPHY - Iron Man (Get Back 2009) Eric Dolphy was a true original with his own distinctive styles on alto, flute and bass clarinet and these are classic recordings in any form and constitute some of the most brilliant work of the early '60s avant-garde. 'Iron Man' is every bit essential and it also clearly anticipates the detailed, abstract sound paintings of Dolphy's masterwork - 'Out to Lunch'. In large part the program is weighted here toward Dolphy's originals: "Iron Man", "Burning Spear" and the shorter "Mandrake" - all have outside themes, are full of Dolphy's trademark wide interval leaps and playful sense of dissonance. Featuring vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis, trumpeter Woody Shaw, flutist Prince Lasha, alto saxist Sonny Simmons and soprano sax player Clifford Jordan. Original artwork & high quality vinyl only reissue for $15.

ORNETTE COLEMAN - Friends and Neighbors/Live at Prince Street (RCA import gold series French import cd) This features Ornette's quartet with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell - live at his loft space on Prince St. from 1970. An inspired performance with audience members like Pharoah Sanders, Leon Thomas, Don Cherry & Gil Evans. Only available as a domestic reissue on lp for $10. and now as an import cd for $16.

RANDY WESTON - Ancient Future/Blue (Mutable 17508) Magnificent newly recorded solo piano performances in which ancient to modern jazz piano pioneer Randy Weston transforms a Bosendorfer piano into a giant talking drum or a 97-stringed kora and an orchestra evolving spirits from around the world and throughout the history of music. Although most of the pieces on this vast two cd set are Mr. Weston's originals which are inspired by the many worlds of time and place, Randy covers a few standards in his own beautiful way - Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Come Sunday", Benny Golson's "Out of the Past" and a sublime rendition of "Body and Soul". Budget priced two cd only set for $16.

THE POP GROUP - "Why" (Radar Records/Japan) Like wow! The Pop Group were one of the great unsung heroes of the British punk/funk/no wave/politico extremist scene! They recorded two absolutely brilliant/scary LPs on Rough Trade in '79 & '80, which still sell for big $$$ today. Theirs members ended up in such great/influential bands as Rip, Rig & Panic and Mark Stewart & the Mafia, while Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell produced their first gem. Limited quantity Japanese import CD only for $25.

JAH WOBBLE - The Early Years [2 CD set] (30 Hertz 16) Righteous retrospective of Wobble's earliest post-PIL recordings, circa 1983-4. "A big thanks to the many of you who, at any time or place, have asked the man operating as Jah Wobble when he's going to re-release the 'Bedroom Album' era records. Years of pestering have finally paid off. And the world is a better place for it. What you have here, on a convenient two disc set, is the legendary, lost 'Bedroom Album', five complete 12 inch singles (as we used to call them) and a selection from the equally legendary and even more lost 'Tradewinds' album. The master tapes are long gone. The discs were re-mastered from the holy records themselves. This music was recorded in a bedroom and various studios in London and in a night club in Amsterdam, during the early 1980s. Then released on Lago - the record label without a logo or an address. 'The Bedroom Album' wasn't planned as an album. Wobble made it because that's what he does. By himself mostly, with some help from David, known as Animal, Maltby on electric guitar. But it's not like he wasn't getting out of the house at all at the time. He was also busy playing with Animal and Jim Walker as the Human Condition, as well as making records with the likes of Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit, and Ben Mandelson. And at home it stayed until someone from Rough Trade came round, heard the tapes, and suggested it be released. Given that Wobble hadn't much of an income source at the time, he agreed. Listening to the record you get the feeling that the curtains of the bedroom probably weren't opened very much. The music is compelling, introspective and dark. 'No joy in my heart, I'm just existing' he sings on the opening track, City. (It was made shortly after the death of Ian Curtis in 1981.) This darkness, as Wobble often has said, is a part of all of us that should be recognized and dealt with, not ignored. To quote the original sleeve notes by Juan Fernandez Jr, "A record perfect for night-time playing, to be played as the antidote of Western Cancer Music". The second disc is a set of completely different dishes, using many of the same ingredients and spices. After this batch of records Wobble spent about 10 years working with Island Records before going in to business for himself again in 1997 with the launch of 30 Hertz Records. As with Lago, this arrangement suits the man much better, allowing him to put out exactly the music he wants when he wants. Two CD only set for $16.

POUR ROBERT WYATT - various artists (In Poly Son 0401) A version of this cd was included in Jean-Michel Marchetti's book 'MW' which presented Robert Wyatt's lyrics in French with charming pictures. This is a pretty obviously heartfelt tribute to the great man by a number of artists, most of whom are French and include Chris Cutler, Tony Buck, Dominique Grimaud, Lok De Bouk, Klimperei, L'Ensemble Raye, Jean-François Pauvros, Pascale Comelade, Toupidek Limonade and many others. Also includes Robert himself reading and speaking (but not singing) on a few tracks. Restocked and price reduced to $14.

ART ZOYD - Le Mariage du Ciel et de L'Enfer (Atonal 3031) One of the grandest, most sophisticated and long-lasting of all European progressive bands - Art Zoyd - have been around for over thirty years. They are originally from Belgium and their members have swelled from upwards of seven members in 1979 down to only three in 1992, their instrumentation covers keyboards, strings, saxes, guitar, bass and percussion, but often no drummer. 'Le Mariage' is from '84 & '85 and it is one of their finest moments. Their music here is filled with suspense, it is spacious, yet dark, has a hypnotic pulse, without a drummer to drive it, a spooky, almost gothic vibe - quite majestic in part - rarely dense. Their music is often rather soundtrack like, always evoking images of ghosts and floating spirits - this music was composed for a ballet by Roland Petit. On sale for a short while for $12.

ART ZOYD - Berlin (Atonal 3033) From 1987, the quartet version consisted of Gerard Hourbette on strings & keyboards, Thierry Zaboitzeff on cello, bass & keyboards, Patricia Dallio on keyboards only - all three are longtime members with Andre Mergenthaler on cello & alto sax. The pace is more sped up here, the spirits dancing more quickly, but when things slow down the elegant and austere vibes begins to soothe. Still spooky and ominous in sections. $12.

ART ZOYD - [Music for F. W. Murnau's] "Nosferatu" (Atonal 3008) The same quartet performs the music for the classic silent film "Nosferatu" - an early horror film that once seen, will never be forgotten. The enclosed booklet includes pictures from the film and it was actually shown at Lincoln Center in NYC more than a decade ago with Art Zoyd accompanying the film. This cd also contains "Vorange" for a ballet by the Salzburg Bewegungstheatre. $12.

ART ZOYD - Marathonnerre (Atonal 3015/3016) Now slimmed down to the essential trio of Patricia, Gerard & Thierry for a twelve hour spectacle, this dynamic work is an excerpt of the music for a mise en scene entitled "Marathonnerre" - directed by Serge Noyelle. More highly evocative, suspenseful, eerie, dreamy and often mesmerizing. Strange tribal samples and minimal mysterious vocals also add enticing sinister spice. Two set for $17.

ART ZOYD - Haxan (Atonal 3023) The essential trio now [in 1997] adds drummer Daniel Denis from Univers Zero as their guest for another early silent movie - B. Christensen's "Haxan" from 1921, an even more frightening feature with grotesque pictures in the liner notes that will surely give one nightmares for years to come. More breathtaking, grandiose and deranged music for those who need the brutal truth to be told. $12.

DR. JOHN - Babylon (Wounded Bird 270) Since the long awaited domestic cd reissue of Dr. John's fabulous first effort 'Gris-Gris' on Collector's Choice last year, we have and continue to sell dozens of copies of this cosmic classic on both cd ($14.) and vinyl ($10.) A few months back, we were able to find import copies on cd of the next three Dr. John efforts which are almost as great as 'Gris-Gris', but soon those copies disappeared, leaving a number of our friends/customers frustrated. Well, do not fret, 'cause all three are back on this budget priced local label. 'Babylon', Dr. John's second album, is a fantastic and weird slice of spicy gumbo not easy to explain. The curse of Babylon is upon us - the wrath of God will scare us into submission, the arrangements are an odd mix of soul, gospel, psych, rock, blues and New Orleans funk with a haunting chorus of female singers to bring us back down to Mother Earth. "This is not the land of milk & honey, this is the place where people sell their souls for money" sings the good Doctor. "Black Widow Spider" rocks the soul hard and "Barefoot Lady" has a sublime groove, African chorus and hypnotic cloud surrounding. Side two is even better. 'Babylon' came out in the stormy year of 1968 and was produced by Sonny & Cher in Hollywood's Gold Star Studio. The "Twilight Zone" is where we all end up when we can't understand why things happen the way that they do, this tune takes us there on a ride through the troubled times of the assassinations of John & Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. "The Patriotic Flag-Waver" was a staple of FM radio, it deals with complex and explosive issue of ethnic and political diversity in American society - how quick we are to judge those who look or act different than us. The children's chorus sings "My Country Tis of Thee" and "America the Beautiful" in between the verses, adding a poignant innocence to the abuse of freedom or acceptance of others. "Lonesome Guitar Strangler" closes and is a hoot - poking fun at those who copy the great guitar slingers of the late sixties - Jimi Hendrix, Gabor Szabo & Wes Mongomery. A closet classic is back! CD only release for $12.

DR. JOHN, THE NIGHT TRIPPER - Remedies (Wounded Bird 316) This one contains the groovy tracks "Loop Garou", "Mardi Gras Day" and the harrowing, side-long epic "Angola Anthem" about Dr. John's trials and tribulations in the Angola prison. Another voodoo/gumbo classic. CD only for $12.

DR. JOHN, THE NIGHT TRIPPER - The Sun, The Moon & Herbs (Wounded Bird 362) Recorded in various studios around the world and featuring a diverse cast - Eric Clapton, Graham Bond, Ken Terroade, Walter Davis, Victor Brox, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, Jim Price, Bobby Keys & the Memphis Horns. Another classic, from 1971. CD only for $12.

BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND - In My Own Dream (Wounded Bird 4025) This was the fourth and last great effort from Chicago's finest (mostly white) electric blues band. At this point, the band featured Elvin Bishop on lead guitar, a horn section with David Sanborn (who later sold his soul to the devil to make slick funk/jazz records) and Gene Dinwiddie (later joined the amazing Full Moon) plus the late Phillip Wilson on drums (original Art Ensemble & Full Moon member). Al Kooper guests on organ. Righteous, real and down home electric blues! $12.

ALI AKBAR KHAN - From Father to Son (Ammp 029) The art of Indian classical music has been passed down from father to son, generation to generation as naturally as time goes by. This particular school of music, the Baba Allauddin Senya Binkar Gharana, dates back to the 16th century and the courts of Emperor Akbar. Ali Akbar Khan was taught by his father, Baba Allauddin Khan, who told him to spread the music as far as the sun and the moon. Indian classical music's place in the history of music is unique: most of what is performed on stage is composed on the spot according to the rules of the tradition. For a student, this is the most challenging time of one's life -- listening and responding at the feet of one's guru with an intensity felt every moment. The traditional raga performed here, 'Ragini Puriya Dhanasri' is an evening raga with a mood of peace, pathos, joy and power. Its magic will pull you in and keep you involved until the last note of the performance. $14.

NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN - Paris Concert - Volume 1 (Ocora 581658) This is the first volume (out of five) by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Sufi master and master of the transcendent Qawwali vocals. Nusrat sings songs fervent with divine passion in the khayal, thumree, dadra and ghazal styles, with a strength and intensity that overwhelmed audiences around the world. French radio session recorded 11/6/85. CD only release for $13.

ALIM QUASIMOV - The Art of the Mugham (Ocora 561112) This cd features Alim Quasimov, the greatest classical Azerbaijani singer of his generation, accompanied on the tar lute and the kamancha viol by the incomparable Mansurov brothers. This is a perfect sampler of the art of Mugham, the classical music of Azerbaijan. Recorded 1996. Another extraordinary treasure from the ongoing Ocora budget priced reissue series. CD only release for $13.

CERTAIN GENERAL - An Introduction to War (SourMash 201) During the early and mid-seventies, it was mostly progressive, jazz/rock and avant-jazz that I was into. By the end of the 70's, it was back to rock again (punk/new wave) thanks to Television, Talking Heads & Elvis Costello, as well as no-wave bands like DNA, Pere UbuS Besides befriending the early downtown scene, I was also checking out tons of bands known and little known - at CB's, Maxwells, the Pep, Danceteria, etc. I recall two bands from the early eighties that often played together with much fondness - Certain General and Band of Outsiders. Both were great double guitar, bass and drum bands with intriguing songs and with some riveting psych guitar buzzing that I always ate up. I could never figure why both of these bands never got the recognition they deserved. This fine double cd set collects some 40 plus songs from studio and live dates from 1981-1985 and it brings back loads of memories. I was probably at a few of these gigs. This collection also includes an informative booklet with their history and pictures. Nifty two cd set for $20.

A FEW ADDITIONS to the $10. or 7 cds for the PRICE of 6 SALE CD LIST:

ARTHUR BLYTHE - Illusions (Koch 7869) Featuring a stellar cast with James Blood Ulmer on electric guitar, John Hicks on piano, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bob Stewart on tuba, Fred Hopkins on bass and Steve McCall or Bobby Battle on drums! Superb! 6 for 7 sale cd or $10.

JOHN STEVENS AWAY - Mutual Benefit (Konnex 5061) The late John Stevens was, along with Tony Oxley, the most formidable, adventurous and inspirational of all British avant-jazz drummers. He was the leader and only constant member of the legendary Spontaneous Music Ensemble (aka SME) and also led the phenomenal free-fusion unit - John Stevens Away, who recorded four fabulous yet oft ignored records featuring an ongoing army of great electric jazz/rock guitarists. This long (71 plus minutes) cd is the only recorded evidence of this rich and diverse period and features three ensembles from 1977, 1978 & 1980. All three units feature two fine el. guitarists and personnel which most of us wouldn't recognize since Stevens was always searching for and giving opportunity to fine players known and unknown. Inspiration comes from different sources like Miles Davis, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani, Alan Holdsworth. Phil Seaman and writers such as Samuel Beckett & James Joyce. From the rambunctious to the sublime and for adventurous free-fusion lovers worldwide for only $10 or the 7 cds for 6 sale.

JOEL FUTTERMAN/JIMMY LYONS/RICHARD DAVIS/ROBERT ADKINS - Inner Conversations (Ear-Rational 1019) Joel Futterman is one those unsung giants of avant-jazz piano who continues to astound audiences and listeners when they finally get a chance to witness his powerful playing. A Chicago native who spent a couple of years with the AACM and now lives in Virginia, he blew minds at the Vision Fest here a few years back. This cd features an explosive quartet with Cecil Taylor's long-standing late alto sax great - Jimmy Lyons, who passed on not too much later, master bassist Richard Davis and Joel's long-time drummer - Robert Adkins. This cd includes the entire 'Inneraction Suite' lp from 1984, plus another half hour of Joel's intense solo piano work from 1988. (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

JOE FONDA - From the Source (Konnex 5075) Featuring Anthony Braxton on numerous saxes & clarinets, Herb Robertson on trumpets, Brenda Bufalino tap dancing & narration, Vickie Dodd on vocals, Joe Fonda on bass & compositions and Grisha Alexiev on drums. A long lost studio gem from one of our favorite bassists - the ever inspired and hard working - Joe Fonda. What is truly amazing here is how well everyone involved works together and is an equal part of the entire seamless journey - the singing, narration and tap dancing are especially well chosen. (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

DICK GRIFFIN - The Eighth Wonder & More (Konnex 5059) Featuring Sam Rivers, Clifford Jordan & Bill Saxton on saxes & flute, Ron Burton, Hubert Eves or Donald Smith on piano, Cecil McBee or Calvin Hill on bass, Warren Smith, Freddie Waits, Billy Hart & others on drums & percussion and Dick Griffin on trombone and compositions. I recall Mr. Griffin from the Sam Rivers Big Band in the late 70's and a couple of fine records he did as a leader from that same time. This is a reissue of his Strata East lp from 1974, plus another 24 minutes of an unreleased session probably recorded around that same time. (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

BILL HORVITZ - Solo Electric Guitar & Compositions for 11 Piece Ensemble (Ear-Rational 1027) Half solo electric guitar and half early downtown ensemble featuring an impressive line-up with Elliott Sharp, Herb Robertson, George Cartwright, Jason Hwang, Myra Melford, Vincent Chancey, Evan Gallagher, Alex Lodico, Marion Brandis, Dave Hofstra and Bobby Previte. Bill Horvitz, along with brother Wayne, was one of the early pioneers of the downtown scene. An experimental/jazz/rock electric guitarist and the original leader of The President, which Wayne soon took over. I recall a solo set from the early 80's in which Bill coaxed subtle and odd sounds from his guitar-in-lap with salt shaker and other utensils. His solo playing here also sounds like a focused display of strange fragmented sounds which tell a variety of short stories. He only made one solo guitar record (from 1979) and appeared on few platters from that same period of time - a trio date with Butch Morris & J.A. Deane from 1886. These solo guitar pieces were recorded in 1989 and the ensemble works were live at Roulette in December or 1986. These two longer works have a few layers of interlocking parts, fractured grooves and twisted ongoing solos. (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

GLENN BRANCA - Symphony No. 1 (Tonal Plexus) (ROIR/USA) Music in four movements for multiple guitars, keyboards, brass and percussion. Equally primitive, primal and riveting! (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

SOFT MACHINE - Volume One (One Way) Their first legitimate offering was one of the finest, weirdest and most intriguing albums of 1968 - it sounded like nothing else! Their personnel featured Kevin Ayers on deep toned lead vocals & electric bass, Mike Ratledge on fuzz organ and Robert Wyatt on high-pitched lead vocals & drums. One continuous work with amazing solos from each member, mesmerizing repeating vibrations and memorable tunes which are impossible to forget. They opened for Jimi Hendrix on his first American tour and also blew minds like the Experience did, by jamming at length. (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

THE BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE - self/titled (Camera Obscura 040) Sort of legendary, but mostly little known psychedelic guitar/bass/drums trio from deserts of Arizona and led by uno Jesus Acedo. They made a few great albums for the deceased Reckless label in the mid-eighties and then disappeared back into obscurity. This cd includes songs from their albums, as well as some unreleased material. It is an all instrumental offering and features lots of fine psych guitar noodling, both electric and acoustic. Time to toke up and groove into bliss. (7 CD's for the price of 6 sale) $10.

HERBIE HANCOCK - Empyrean Isles (Blue Note/USA) Featuring a stellar quartet with Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. 1999 RVG remasters with two extra cuts. 7 for 6 CD sale or $10.

HENRY THREADGILL - Makin' A Move (Columbia) Four songs with the Very Very Circus group [Brandon Ross, M Taylor, Ed Cherry, EJ Rodriguez, Marcus Rojas & Pheeroan AkLaff]; 1 track with Myra Melford, James Emery, Brandon Ross, Ed Cherry and 1 track with Michelle Kinney, Diedre Murray & Akua Dixon. Produced by Bill Laswell. 7 for 6 CD sale or $10.

JOEL HARRISON - 3 + 3 = 7 (Nine Winds 187) Featuring Nels Cline, Steve Cardenas, John Schott & Joel Harrison on guitars and Alex Cline, Brad Dutz, Scott Amendola, Garth Powell on drums. Two different ensembles from LA and the bay area, each with three guitars and three drummers. Intense, focused and directed improv coolness. 7 for 6 cd sale or $10. each
